Obliterating my Sanity with Bloodborne, Sekiro and Elden Ring | Reviewing Every Dark Souls Spinoff

- hello darkness, my old friend...?
SPOILERS FOR ALL GAMES BTW
FromSoft developed 3 spinoff titles that pushed the boundaries of the Dark Souls framework. Each of them bring interesting innovations to traditional souls gameplay, and get creative with the aesthetics too. This is part 2 of my patron-backed look at the Dark Souls series.
Final verdict? I like every souls game, period. It took a while to get there for more than one, however, and I finally took the time to figure out my own biases and latent frustrations with Bloodborne. Sekiro was fascinating and rewarding, but that controller definitely cost at least $20. Elden Ring is incredible and the hype is deserved - even if only for the aesthetics, though I really enjoy the additions to gameplay. Making me enjoy an open world isn't some small feat.
I won't tier these because it's sliiightly tacky? Like not really, but I'd rather you all draw your own conclusions and love/hate what you do regardless of me. It's worth mentioning that every title across the series struck down almost everything else I've played for a long time - they're just fun games, and I love customizability and character building, fantasy, etc.
Q: KBash you forgot to mention Patches!
A: YOOO Patches thooooo-- is shot dead immediately at ten paces
Q: KBash you forgot to mention Berserk!
A: YOOOOO I mario hoo sound LOVE BERSE-- is thrown shrieking under a stump grinder

All sekiro players will forever remember the first time owl used mikiri counter on them alongside the first encounter with the woo guy
1st time player here, can confirm
Who even uses thrust attacks tho?
@@billythenarwhal1579 I was really desperate at that point and just using every single attack and Shinobi tool to try to beat him
@diegobrando3871 I mean he's def the hardest boss in the game, well maybe 2nd I really struggled against Ashina Isshin trying to get the Shura ending.
@@billythenarwhal1579 owl , isshin (both sword saint and the shura ending version) and the demon of hatred are definitely some of the hardest bosses in the game
Of course the mist noble is THE hardest boss in the game, no one can argue with that
the coolest thing about Bloodborne's Rally mechanics is that because of how the games are coded if you keep attacking an enemy's corpse you still "deal damage" to it (this works in all of the games, try it out in ER with godskin duo it actually makes things slightly more manageable) until you get blood echoes from it, so not only does the game incentivize you to go full beast mode it tells you to eviscerate the corpses of your enemies, and that's just neat
It makes sense lore wise too because the way you heal is by splashing the healing blood of your enemies into your open wounds so aslong as the corpse is still fresh you can still harvest their blood
i was so completely viscerally excited when i noticed this as i was playing my beast rune beast claw's boy
Few things feel better than seeing a Kbash movie in my notifications👌
100%
What about a Sam O’Nells notification
Don’t get me wrong though I still get really excited
I absolutely agree, i love alot of notifications on RUclips but Damn it feels epic and hyped up when i see Kbash notifications. I get really excited for his entertaining and hilarious rants but also interested to see his views. Kbash is just epicly entertaining and very informative.
Look at🎉 Eat wpw lo
I see comments all the time about how ain't nobody got time for a hardcore experience and that only no-lifers with minimal responsibilities can conquer such games. KBash even alludes to it a few times here. This is such a load of bull and only really applies to people who make content for a living or those who want to play many games in a year.
I value hardcore gaming experiences. As an "essential worker", it took me over half of 2020 to even beat Sekiro once. I didn't no-life it. I just cared enough about the gameplay experience provided by From titles.
Busy people, it can be done. No need to look down on other people for being hardcore and assume they're lazy bums.
Huh. Just noticed that with the Celestial Emissary and Living Failures, they both are before Bosses that are in some way, responsible for the events you're currently going through. Ebrietas with the Healing Church/Scourge of the Beast and Maria with the Death of the Kos and her child/Hunter's Nightmare.
For me, Bloodborne is still FromSoft's magnum opus.
Dude when that boss in sekiro announced himself I was stunned. Sounded like he was about to start a hatebreed song next. It's my favorite video game line performance of all time
59:38 The Guardian Ape is my favorite boss due to how satisfying it is to pull the centipede out of its head hole with the spear after this move. Major posture damage and hugely satisfying animation to go with it. More bosses needed prosthetic specific reposts like that one
One of the things a sequel could do to improve on the boss design.
As someone who really can't get into character action games or fiendishly difficult games, I really appreciate this perspective that you bring with these reviews Kbash. All the best to ya.
The perception that these games are fiendishly difficult is mostly born from people treating them like button mashers and refusing to engage with them, or a product of the marketing strategy starting from DS2.
These games are hard, yes, but not prohibitively so for most. All it takes is a willingness to engage with the game.
No shame in playing character action games on easy, my dude. As long as you're having fun
@@marciamakesmusic agreed I've been going through them for the first all ever since finishing Elden Ring, and I've realized these games aren't that hard tbh
@@radpunk5144 The only character action game I'm good at is the DMC reboot, so I'm still learning
Spectacle Fighter* And Souls-likes aren't the same. Sekiro approaches it with the special moves, but Bayonetta, DmC, Viewtiful Joe, GoW 1-3 are a very different category of gaming. Even the presentation is leagues different. In a Souls-like you should be afraid of your enemies. In a spectacle fighter your enemies should be afraid of you.
1:17:36 The only thing sillier than a Hoarfrost Stomp without FP is Flame of the Redmanes. You just wave your arms at the enemies like you think this can pivot to a dance fight if you style hard enough.
I had a hard time with Sekiro until it clicked for me. You have to be hyper aggressive like in Bloodborne but instead of Rally, you just parry everything and flow in constant attacks.
Once you hit the flow state in Sekiro it's one of the most rewarding games I've ever played, I even managed to get Sword Saint Isshin to second phase without taking damage on NG+3 when I was getting all the achievements.
Yeah people try to brute force the game instead of just using the info and mechanics it gives you. You don't have to be in a constant aggressive state, stealth exists. Some enemies are just easier to deal hp damage to and then start deflecting.
@@marciamakesmusicimagine my sorry ass who bought the game ON RELEASE and then dropped it when I couldn't get past the first ogre, only after 2 years I went to play the game again and didn't leave until I had all achievements
First time watching your channel.
Thank you for taking the time to make this!! These 3 are probably my favorite FromSoft games and definitely in my top 10 faves (BB being # 1). I really enjoyed your insight into the games!
Bloodborne was also heavily inspired by the movie Brotherhood of the Wolf. And 8:00, the guy from the intro cutscene, who does your transfusion, is not Gerhman.
Shut up nerd im try’nna watch kbash
This is insane Kbash, I can't imagine anyone else holding my interest for so long. Absolute mad man.
Perfect way to start my morning, Kbash I fkn love your style and humor.
The beginnin set the tone real quick.
I have been waiting for your Souls takes ever since I discovered you with the Drakengard vids.
You overdelivered on all fronts with these masterpieces - go have a break that was some insane writing!!!
Also I am so glad you enjoyed Elden Ring - I had the perception growing you hated all modern games but I'm glad to see you hold your channel mantra true always - "experience games genuinely"
Bloodborne is the one I like the most of the three. Its just so, complete. Almost everything about it is great. Only wish I could warp directly without having to go back to the HD but that's just a peeve of mine.
frankly i feel the opposite. doest really feel complete at all to me, especially in its environments and the lack in variety in them, which saddened me the most considering the cool dream and nightmare concepts. theres alot to dislike about bb compared to the others imo. you say it feels complete, i say it feels limited and EXTREMELY lacking. overall i think ER is the best by far but it was my first so theres that. ERs environmental/level design is just on another league.
@@flamingmanure Having variety for the sake of variety is never a good thing, Bloodborne's world is consistent and cohesive to its setting and the atmosphere is pretty much unmatched in any games of the series because of that, i love elden ring dont get me wrong but i find a lot of its locations to be extremely generic(not all of them ofc) but its not something that we have not seen before and its cosmic stuff is laughable compared to the cosmic horror of Bloodborne.
@@flamingmanure wtf you mean no variety. Are you really gonna sit there and tell me that Cainhurst Castle looks aesthetically the same as Yharnam? Or Hemwick Charnel Lane looks the same as The Nightmare Frontier? Or the Astral Clocktower looks the same as the Fishing Hamlet?
Sounds to me like you haven't played the game, and are just regurgitating shit other people have said, or weren't paying attention when playing the game.
Elden Ring on the other hand has lost a lot of its flow. You never know when you're ready for a boss at the end of one of the zones, so you're often just going back killing more smaller fry you've already killed before because you're too low level.
In Bloodborne it's tight af, if you clear a zone, you're guaranteed to be leveled enough to kill the boss at the end of the area.
Bloodborne is top tier FromSoftware. That's factual. Whether you like Elden Ring more, that's totally up to you. But then at least come with actual arguments as to why you think that is, because you're full of shit currently.
I’ve been playing souls games since demons souls, but sekiro was the first one I actually beat… not really sure why, but to me I don’t find it as difficult as the others, I think it’s in part that you never feel outleveled by an area or like you made a mistake on a build decision, you always have the kit necessary to overcome the challenge. That’s the way I see it anyway.
Also im fairly certain the only required bosses are radahn, the twin gargoyles, the golden lord Godfrey, morgott, fire giant, maliketh, sir Gideon ofnir the all knowing, horah Loux, and radagon/Elden beast… so 9 bosses in total… I believe
@@caravaneerkhed actually you can skip Radahn and fight Rennala instead
@@agenttex5973 what are you talking about? I mean you don’t need to kill the required Elden lords in order to enter lyendell if you ignore everything and go to radahan beating him reveals the entrance to the eternal city, beating the twin gargoyles gets you access to fias chamber, and there you can use her portal to jump past the barrier to lyendell. I haven’t tested it so idk if it’s actually possible, but if so that means prior to lyendell the only required boss is radahn in terms of the path of least bosses, although you could argue the gargoyles and fias champions are the same as going through Godrick and rennala, so maybe this is just incorrect anyway, but it’s interesting to consider you might not need to beat as many Elden lords as they suggest?
@@caravaneerkhed didnt even know about that portal lol
@@agenttex5973 lol oh xD I had already made it to lyendell by the time I discovered where it takes you, but I do want to eventually try and go that route to see if I can skip the elden lords
was wondering why u hadn't posted in a while, hella worth it!
Your on another level man. This is by far the best review of these games iv ever seen. I don’t even like this genre but the way you describe these games made my buy bloodbourne again. Hopefully people can tell that you have a level of articulation that just rare. Keep up the good work, easily my favorite channel.
I did play Bloodborne right after Nioh and let me tell you, it truly felt like I was playing the game in slow motion.
man i tried playing nioh after ds1, ds3, bb and elden ring. i know nioh is good but it just felt like a mobile game style soulslike with the loot spam and level design. the damage numbers reminded me of 'the division'.
i made it to main mission 14 and gave it a break. it was too much blacksmith menu surfing for me. is nioh 2 better??
i thoroughly enjoyed Wo Long if that means anything.
@@slipstream7324 nioh 2 has the same amount of loot
I see you using castle in the mist from ico during that first bit after the intro. Hell yeah! I love that song. And vector to the heavens! You picked some great songs.
I love your vids! Got excited about how long this one was and the content therein. (I don’t want you doing long vids that go over an hour bc I know it’s gotta take a lot out of you for just one entry)… ((BUT I AM WATCHING IT START TO FINISH NO BREAKS BABY))
Man you always have a unique outlook on games like the souls series that have thousands of videos made on them. You seem to bring a different mindset to them and i appreciate that
Loved your breakdowns of demon's/dark souls, excited to see these too!
I copied the save file and played the beginning over and over until I beat Genichiro. _Then_ I played the rest of the game. Went pretty smooth.
Great video! I always enjoy your uploads.
One of my favorite youtubers reviewing my favorite games, todays the day boys
Seeing a new kbash vid pop up gives me genuine excitement, the color scheme in the thumbnail is an instant chub!
the video title should actually say "Reviewing Every Demon's Souls Spinoff"
Woo video essay on a Friday. Delightful
This may be my new favorite of your videos
With each video, you find a finer and more agreeable balance between the clever comedy and insightful commentary. Bravo.
I would love to see a video on the three kingsfield games that came to the West. They were one of the most unique experiences that you could get back in the 90s.
When you mentioned the amount of bosses one has to kill to in order beat ER, I started wondering if that is indeed accurate. Volcano Manor can be reached with the iron maiden teleport, but you cannot access Rykard himself unless you either progress the level which involves a boss, or do the invasion questlines, which require accessing the snow area. The crescent halves at least can be accessed without killing any bosses, so Radahn can be unlocked without a single boss kill in two different ways. The other demi-god dungeons the player can access before Leyndell have two bosses in total, so the overall count is:
Radahn, a legacy dungeon with a boss and a demi-god, Draconic Tree Sentinel, Godfrey's ghost, Morgott, Fire Giant, Godskin Duo, Maliketh, Ofnir, Senator Godfrey of the Nanomachines Variety, and the final boss: Rubis and the cosmic hallucigenia. 12 boss fights, as the final boss still counts as just one. 13 is still more likely to happen, as you have to go out of your way to access Altus Plateau with the crescent halves or the iron maiden teleport, which is a lot more boring when compared to just doing a fun legacy dungeon.
I do love the comedic use of the GBA Fire Emblem Crit sound effect in your videos, Kbash.
Glad to see you covering the rest. Finally got the chance to play Bloodborne and put a capstone on having played every game recently, and holy heck dude. The bosses aren't too difficult in Bloodborne but some areas are doozy's. The nightmare frontier in particular lives up to it's name. Honestly just any area with the frenzy mobs is not a fun time. Like there were a bunch of times playing Bloodborne that my jaw dropped at how much everything is interconnected, but there were also many times where I just started opting to Speedrun zones because I couldn't be bothered to mow through the small army on the way back. Great game but flawed execution, the lore and world building in game though? Chef's kiss. Without even watching vaati videos I very quickly picked up on everything because the enemy designs, npcs etc, all clear things up pretty damn well.
Love your content. Ngl tho, you bungled the sword saint fight. And the no life strawman is pretty exhausting. Loved most of the rest of the video, keep it up 👍
Yeah, being told that I have no life simply because I'm competent (not great just acceptable) at most games does get tiring sometimes. But patronizing BS aside he makes some great points about enjoying the game in your own way and not conforming to how some elitest internet gaming chode says you should play.
It's hard for me to know for sure because Bloodborne was my first souls game as well, but goddamn Central Yharnam is so hard. It's not just harder then the soft tutorial sections of the other Souls games, but it's maybe harder than the first real areas of the games. I definitely feel like it's harder than Undead Burg, which at least has a bonfire in the middle. But Central Yharnam is so long until you unlock the short cut and even then I'd say you have a very high chance of hitting the cleric beast before unlocking the shortcut. Absolutely brutal
Oh snap, he's finally done it, don't have time yo watch the vid right now but I'll definitely be watching this after work. Much excite
These videos are long but i cant stop watching. Adding my love for these games these are great videos that go in great depth about the games while also throwing in your own view points, also ur funny as hell dude
Damn...banger Kbash...Banger.
Just wanna say before my mild correction that i recently found your channel and like what you do. I like your balanced takes as they're a nice refreshment over usually hearing one side or the other pretty heavily.
Anyways, don't know if this has been stated yet, but fun fact is you don't have to beat Cleric Beast or Gascoigne to level up. You just need an Insight of 1, which you can get from Madman's knowledge before setting foot in a boss room. As long as you don't immediately use the Insight, you get one from seeing a boss too.
yasss ive been waiting for the bloodborne review. very well done 👌
Two minutes in and I didnt expect Kbash learning his Zanpakuto's name.
Damnit! It's 1:30am and you upload this as I'm about to go to bed! You son of a--
That Vector to the Heavens music behind the Xbahks segments is *mwah*. A man of culture
Souls games and Sekiro in particular taught me patience and anger management. I used the fly off the handle over every little thing but after getting into Fromsoft games I’ve become a much more calm and collected person. I haven’t rage quit or even gotten angry at a game in many years all thanks to Fromsoft.
What is the vector to the heavens remox playing in the transition between sekiro and ER?
I now have something to do in the afternoon
Man, you gotta try the Dual Blades of Mercy that Eileene uses. They are AMAZING
seeing you steam roll enemies in ER that were massive hurdles for me in my new playthrough is not doing well for my SWB
when KBash uploads it just makes me smile.
You’re right that Elden Ring is absurdly personalized. The build you find yourself drawn to dictates not just your experience with any given boss, but the path you take through the game to acquire its components.
Like I had a Str/Fth build with the Blasphemous Blade and I bodied Melania hard with my mimic tear, but had my shit pushed in by Margit and the Great Jar’s summons because I’m bad at video games when I can’t rely on pure build to overcome a challenge.
Man, KBash everything you've said and all I've taken from this? The one thing I find that's haunting me is thinking back about the little anecdote about the dude at the con getting barraged with people's stories of their created characters...I find is haunting. That poor bastard. That poor poor man...thank you for giving me depression man, you're too kind and too good to us.
What is the music playing in the premise section? It isn’t listed in the music section
holyshit , i was wondering where the king went , and he comes back with a video on my favorite serie lets fuckinggooooo
Will you ever cover the yakuza series someday. I recommend starting off with the judgment games since theres only 2 games plus the dlc for the second game.
I love demon of hatred but that boss fight is more focused on positioning then on counters makes learning it a pain the first time.
Really appreciate your videos
Finally a video ending that actually felt like an ending. I knew this day would come for this show.
9:10 correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the requirement to talk to the Doll was 1 insight? So by dying once to the Cleric Beast (or using a Madman's Knowledge) already fulfills that requirement.
1:04:25 Anyone know what song is playing here? I can't find it in the list in the description. It sounds very Kingdom Hearts but Idk which song.

Some great thoughts on Sekiro, making me appreciate it more.
Yay, hope he loves Sekiro as much as I did!
Sekiro is my favorite FS game. There's nothing more satisfying than parrying the centipede boss or getting thrown of a cliff by the ogre
@@NoisyB22 hell yeah, especially the second one
You missed Castle In the Mist - ICO, which you used at the end of your intro section!
7:08 - 7:15... God damn it he's right 😂Not to mention my go to look in BB is Gascoigne's gear but with the "uncloaked" Hunter Garb on the chest. The "Coatiest" of coats..if you will 😂
hello... please cover furi...
those pot shots you took at sekiro fans was crazy, especially because it's my favorite game...
Lmao. I loved the Sekiro rant, but I'm willing to bet if you just got a good night's rest during that ishinn fight, you would have come back to it the next day and best it in 30 minutes.
Yeah this dude is a scrub. Souls players always get broken by Isshin
@@GothamiteYT I don't think he's a scrub. Just trying too hard to finish a game for a video, instead of playing it like everyone else. There's been plenty of times in my video game career, where a good night's sleep has let me learn more than anything else.
This is why I've never tried my hand in RUclips gaming lol.
Great vid as usual my boy
I love your uploads maan
Is it considered a spinoff if it's a separate title with no crossover in the story?
I get why it was described as that, since "non-Darksouls Fromsoft Game" is a bit long, but it also makes me confused just reading it.
You can buy an unlimited stock of Blood Rocks. They just cost 60 insight a pop. You can grind insight and have unlimited maxed weapons.
sometimes when the world seems profoundly unjust I remind myself that KBash has more than 100k subs
This is a year and a half late, but "Skill, or some say dexterity" and how quickly you moved past that little Micolash joke made me laugh out loud.
You can level up in bb without cleric beats. There are two mad man's knowledge in centeal yharnam
To be fair, Bloodborne was also based on the Vampire Hunter D Novels. Which had Aliens beyond comprehensions and Vampire with powers to control the Akashic Record. with super power battles.
Source?
Also, a lot of lovecraftian horror pulls from Lovecraft (obvious i know), but cosmic horror as a genre predates him and doesn't always use the same ideas and conventions he did.
And bezerk

My boy Kbash had a primer cheese build in Elden Ring lmao. Frost bleed katana with the frost stomp. Elite gouda 😭
"If you happen to catch me on a rainy day, I'll be there. Somewhere in the lands between, waiting for the call."
Great ending sir.
The Otogi games had the same director, IIRC. Probably would make for some neat comparisons.
ISS is really the best From's boss. He is the ultimate test of everything you learned throughout the game. It's hard, alright, but in a fair way, it feels like a teacher pushing your limits. Rather than a big mokey going apeshit (pun intended), or a flaming boss on the wrong game. I'm sad that you had to cheese the fight, but i understand that it is your job, and you could not take your time as is ideal. Great video btw.
idk for me ISS was a piece of cake but Owl Father made me almost cry after finally beating him (he was the hardest to me)
For my birthday? You shouldn't have! You're too good to me 😊
Love watching your videos!!! That's all I have to say.
You're right that there's only one fixed location for a blood rock in Bloodborne. But you can get as many as you want in a single playthrough. If you're regularly doing chalice dungeons and earning insight you can spend a hefty amount on the insight fountain in the Hunter's Dream. They sell blood rocks. I don't remember when they become available though.
respect for your choice of games on the ps4 menu, man.
Gehrman isn't the guy from the opening cutscene, that guy's getting eaten by the first beast
did not expect the I am satsuma track
Love your reviews, just watched this after watching the whole drakengard/nier reviews. My only thing is that I wish you would talk about music... It was integral to drakengard and nier, as gameplay mechanics and narratively important, and also given lore reasons, and while dark/demons/elden may not be as in depth... They also attempt to embody the emotions the player has as they progress through the game.... And that's an important part of the souls series... Marias theme in Bloodborne, or can lead to other thoughts... That's life
Kbash mentioned baldurs gate, time to hope and pray for that video until the end of time.
What if instead of filling up an insanity meter, instead it drains ur stamina bc you’re frozen in fear?

This is my favorite series! There’s tons of other spin offs that From Software diddnt develop such as Nioh,Mortal Shell,Thymesia,Dolmen,Ashen,Lords of the Fallen,Wo Long, Steel Rising, The Surge and next Last hero of Nostalgia
1:38:27 I wanna praise this commentary to no end but I can’t resist the call of DankyStankSwankyMank
I adore the Kingdom hearts music in the background
"ah, skill... or some say dexterity"
Imma be honest Kbash, I don't even care about the Souls series. I just like your analysis of games and your charisma.
