- The show looks at what happens when people have doubts about the faith tradition in which they were raised, and how the sharing of personal stories can be a means to heal from spiritual trauma.
It’s very encouraging that we’re finally having these discussions. Christianity was traumatizing for me and many people I grew up with. It cripples people emotionally, physically, and spiritually: fear, shame, unworthiness. It’s toxic and I also experienced PTSD.
Funny, how you tools have no problem with religions that cut the clitorises off of 12 year-olds and throw gays off roofs... But, by golly, needing a savior GOTTA GO.

I'm really sorry you felt traumatized by your experience. Was it the Christian faith that traumatized you, or was it imperfect people who disappointed you? There's a big difference between people who wear the name Christian and the real Jesus.
@ChinUp86 I mean ultra orthodox judaism is also pretty harmful in how it controls your behaviour (not by making you do stuff by by prohibiting you from doing stuff). But the number of Jews pales vs the number of christians and most US jews are secular. That's why you don't see as many critiques of it.

This was a helpful documentary. In European evangelicalism things look a lot different. We European evangelicals are a small minority here with not much influence or political power. Power tends to corrupt us as humans whether we are Christians or not.

@@jkm9332 I don't have an issue with some of the sayings attributed to a Jesus of Nazareth, specifically the admonition to love your neighbor as yourself. I don't believe that Yahweh human sacrificed him to save me from the lake of fire though. Is it "duped" when parents indoctrinate a very young child to believe such things? If so, I guess I'm not sure why I allowed it. The cognitive dissonance was always there though.

I’m continually shocked that religion is still a thing in the modern scientific world. An ode to our poor education systems I guess.
Typically underfunded education can't override the 24/7 indoctrination of these belief systems. Even more frightening are the attempts to erase the church/state divide and make public education bend to the will of the religious right.
It's hard to comprehend if you weren't raised in the culture.

First, how is that a problem? Even if it were true, why would that be a problem?
Second, according to Christian doctrine, literally nothing is older than Jesus. He created the universe, so he pre-existed the golden rule.
Third, the golden rule is evidence that humans are moral agents made in the image of God with a God-given moral law written on their hearts. It's no suprise that the golden rule is found in other cultures/religions prior to Jesus's time on earth. It's exactly what we would expect in a universe made by God, the source of all moral goodness.

I applaud CBS and these individuals for speaking out. I have also left Christianity because of the toxic and destructive teachings and environment that I personally was in. Thankfully I found Judaism and the Reconstructionist movement as my personal path to GD and I encourage others to continue on their own journey whether that’s back to organized religion or not.

This was really good. For a long time I wasn’t aware that this process I was going through had a name. I was trying to pin point when it started and I think it started when I was trying to figure out how evangelicals were able to stomach and support Trumph. It caused me to ask myself am I one of them.

@@whiskeredtuna that was my personal experience, because I was an avid listener to Christian radio/tv and things were being said and done that I couldn’t ignore and probably heard all my life and was too busy to dig into. Well I’m no longer a knot on a log, I’ve learned to use my brain🤣. I certainly didn’t mean to attack anyone if that’s how I came across my apologies.
All these “Christians” will act loving to draw you into their group. Once you get in they then use legalism and shaming. I went through my teenage years with anxiety about what behaviors were sinful or not and the soon return of Jesus. I have broken away in my 50’s but it still took awhile to shed everything. It even affected how I raised my daughters because I believed the crap preached by James Dobson. I’m now an agnostic atheist. After what I’ve been through and seeing what others went through there is absolutely no way I would ever set foot in a church except for a wedding or funeral.
I'm sorry that was your experience. It sounds like you didn't have a personal encounter with Jesus. For myself, it's Jesus, not the real or fake Christians, that keeps me in the faith. He's just too good to leave. I hope you'll experience him that way someday. Take care!
@@areftie Anytime someone deconstructs, someone will say they didn't have a true born again experience or didn't meet the real Jesus of Nazareth. But it has been my observation that most people who deconstruct did have a born again experience and had been the most serious and devout about their Christian faith. I also noticed that these people tend to have immense Bible knowledge because they studied the Bible so much when they were Christians. Please let me know if you have any thoughts on this. I have a similar story. Born Again Christianity is just evil at its core. When I left I was so happy and no looking back.

That's a good question. I'm not sure I can put it all into one sentence, but two very well-known passages come to mind that I think summarize his main message:
John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life."
Matthew 22:37-39: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself."
I think these are fair summations of this core teachings.
You said you weren't "born again." But do you consider yourself a Christian? Do you believe Jesus rose from the dead and is who claimed to be?
Really appreciate how you covered this story. Even the phrasing used to transition from one idea or segment to the other was neutral. This feels like one of the first mainstream news outlets to actually treat "the nones" or the "exvangelicals" like adults and that we might actually know what we're talking about. That we were abused by that religion. I believe there ARE good folks in that religion but I don't think that religion made them that way. I think they are just good folks who try to do good and be kind. But they are the except, and not the rule. And the nones have been trying to explain this for years but we were just told we were spoiled and wanted attention. Only now that Gen Z is telling them to f off are folks beginning to listen to us.
It would be like being raised Amish but when you turn 20 you get booted for being nothing more than who you are and then everyone you meet from that point on tells you you weren't amish, and no, you don't have any issues, and if you don't agree, well you just want attention. Well it's a good thing those first 20 years aren't formative. :|
But now with all the ministers coming online for all the world to see, with their big*try, se*ism, r*cism, and ign*rance...it's almost normalized itself because of just how many of the m*ther-effers there are. They have been saying what they've been preaching in church for decades lmao And know that they feel that power slipping for the first time in forever, they have turned to demonizing people are random in your communities and terrorizing those that don't want to live like this any more. We could be a nation where people are fed, and educated, who feel safe and supported by their community, who are able to pursue big dreams, whatever that could mean. I think we're tired and have accepted too much as unchangeable but that is the biggest lie you could believe. I think the idea of changing so many things so quickly kind of breaks our brain but that's great! You can't rethink a system from within, you gotta break out. And that's what we did! We were trapped in a world that we believed to be true, with no options other than what was given to us UNTIL we met people outside of the religion and realized that other people live completely differently than us and they are happy and healthy and not burning in hellfire. lol It's why traveling to other countries is so eye-opening because not everyone does society the same which means there are no rule...more like guidelines, and THAT is the moment when you realize
I'm sorry that was your experience. I've been a Christian for 57 years, and my experience has been quite the opposite. The majority of Christians I've known have been great people. Imperfect, like myself, but still mostly loving. I hope you'll give a relationship with Jesus a chance even if his followers are broken or even fakes. Blessings to you!

The focus is on evangelicals which is unfortunate. My own history is the traditional sacramental denominations which all have their own rules, destructive theological processes. Many claim to be liberal and welcoming to all. This brings a huge struggle for many who prefer white English speaking middle class members. So yes all denominations need to be examined and those who leave these groups need to also be allowed their journey without condemnation
I think it is important to understand the difference between religions as they have developed according to the societies to which they served and the history behind the foundation of the faith.
I believe with development of time the life of white european ancestry person has developed in a direction and at a very rapid pace and far away from.the north middle eastern origin of Christianity to which most of them adhere to.
It is important to remember and recognise that the history of white european person runs much longer, from much early back in time than fiundation of either christianity or judaism from which it has sprung out
So, to my thinking it is very logical that most of the white europeans have grown out of the ambit of essence of the faith. I do not know how they can go back to that unless and until they experience the same situation, the same pain which had existed in society in Palestine/Israel during the times of Jesus or even in Europe during early Christian periods post crucifixion of Jesus.
The big question is should they, or for that matter should anyone in the world ignore the history which exists inside them and the natural dírection in which it pushes or pulls them and saceifice that for the sake of faith in a religious movement which probably has lesser impact inside them than that long history.
However, the much more important question is whether that can at all be done without compromising both of those historical effects, I think that is logically not possible amd should not be attempted. I believe there is nothing wrong in that, nothing to be ashamed of or be scared of.
The thing is I am not sure if those times of the past will return to us, whether they will test the white europeans for deviation from their faith, but I think it is much more important and imoortantly much more logical and much more natural to follow the direction one feels inside them than be directed by what they believe in but can no longer relate to. Probably if we deviate from that path we will be committing more sin than if we deviate from.scriptures.
I truely believe our history is older than all established faiths of the world even if they claim they are the perfectly documented history of origin of human kind.
However, it is also important to recognise that the history of the faith also had effect on us , so in essence we cannot and should not ignore either the faith or the history that came before the faith and survives inside us. There might be conflicts and there probably will be conflicts to adjust to those two at certain points because history of faiths had never been very smooth, so what do we do in such cases of conflicts.
Before we make decision during those junctures we must be capable of understanding the history of the faith and if possible try to experience reason behind its propagatiion and adoption by our ancestors, as with other things that history of adoption would also be inside us somewhere and there we will find our answers and I believe that will solve those problems , those creeping doubts, those bites of conscience.
As for church teachings on keeping chastity, those i believe will be much more recent developments and most if not all of them will be having background history too, so understanding that history from church officials rather than blindly following the instructions should work.
So listened to this video, as I am in the process of destructing from my Christian faith of 26yrs and looked up the EXevangelical Facebook to connect with people during this struggling, confusing time and they REJECTED me from the page. Three times I answered their questions to try and join their private page and three times they REJECTED me from trying to join AND they had the audacity of BLOCKING me from the page!
How rude and cruel to someone that is trying to find their way away from Christianity.

The same thing happened to me yesterday. Their first question asked if I agree not to "mansplain, whitesplain or dominant group splain!" I replied: You are using Feminist/Communist/Critical Race Theory language here, thereby violating your Rule #1 below forbidding sexism and racism. This is a radical group of homos. I am glad they rejected me because i reject them. Christian or not, I am still a normal conservative white male.
If you were doing a research paper, would you use a reference (source) for the researcher paper that did not have an author and the background of the author?
When did they actually deconstruct their faith? Which doctrines did they dispute? Did they even open the Bible? The next time CBS decides to do a special on deconstructing one’s faith maybe you should have a debate so these young deconstructionists can demonstrate the fallacy they’ve uncovered in God’s Word!

By the way, the Bible says in 1st John 2:19, "They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us; but they went out that they might be made manifest, that none of them were of us." According to this scripture you were never really saved. You may have gone to church, and handed out tracks, and worn a cross, but you weren't really saved. This is NOT my opinion but God's word.
If you were talking about some other youtuber's opinion, then you could say, "Well, I think..." But we are talking about the ETERNAL, ALL-POWERFUL, CREATOR of the universe. Who says, "Can the gods of the other nations (religions) tell you the future? No! They are mere lifeless idols." But I..." and then He proceeds to give us over one thousand prophecies in the Bible to demonstrate that God's word can be trusted. He also adds over one hundred scientific facts in scripture in all fields of science that were written down, thousands of years BEFORE the great scientists of the world would discover them. For example, up to a few hundred years ago surgeons used to wash their hands in basins of water, until they discovered it became a bowl of germs. They started using running water. The Bible instructed the use of running water thousands of years earlier. Soldiers used to die from disease, until they finally figured out to do their toilet business outside the camp. The Bible thousands of years before this, instructed the Israeli soldiers to take a small shovel outside the camp and bury their waste. Doctors used to drain blood (blood-letting) from sick patients, but thousands of years ago the Bible said, the life is in the blood. It wasn't until a couple hundred years ago, that oceanographers discovered mountains rising off the ocean floor, but the Bible thousands of years ago spoke of these mountains. The Bible says, "It is God who spreads out the stars." Astrophysicists now say the very fabric of space is spreading out taking the galaxies along for the ride. Up until about five hundred years ago, astronomers thought there was about 4,000-5,000 stars. But the Bible in Genesis compares the number of stars to the grains of sand along the seashore. Astronomers now say there are at least twice as many stars as sand on all the beaches of the world. Albert Einstein in his paper on relativity stated that matter, energy, space and time itself all had a beginning. But thousands of years earlier in Genesis chapter one the Bible says, "In the beginning (a reference to time having a beginning) God created the earth (matter) the heavens (space) and said let there be light (energy). I don't want to make this so long people won't read it, but you can go any Christian bookstore and find books on the hundreds and hundreds of fulfilled prophecies, in the Bible. There were 256 totally fulfilled prophecies concerning the birth, life, ministry, and death of Christ alone. So, God in HIS word has told of science thousands of years in advance of it being discovered by the great scientific minds of the world, He has spoken prophetic utterances that have come true, over and over again, in a literal, not metaphorical sense, again, to demonstrate His authority. He is God, we are His creation. This is His world, His universe. He is sovereign. Look, it's a great deal; surrender to His only means of forgiving our sins and reconciling ourselves to HIM, Christ dying on the cross, and reap eternal life, eternal peace, eternal health, and eternal joy. OR reject His offer of pardon and receive your just punishment. I choose Jesus Christ.

The fear shame trauma imposed in Christianity is Real. I am a deconstructing Christian. Of I should say deconstructing from religious dogma. I no longer believe in anything but you reap what you sow, do onto others as you would do to yourself.

The ability to research now will make you leave Christianity sooner than you think. Well there is the ability to research outside of what Pastor Bob tells you on Sunday as well. And this is what I tell my own subs all the time, even the Christian ones I have. You have the ability to research for yourself. When an apologist makes one of these "evidence" claims, go out and fact check him. Do that to Strobel's apologist claims and you'll find bad speculation and many times flat out untruths that he never bothered to check. Craig states we have evidence of the empty tomb. Actually, we don't and the only ones who think that with the Holy Sepulchre are his fellow apologists. If you research you will find not one single recorded anything about a resurrection from anyone who knew Yeshua--from Jews, Christians, Romans, friends, enemies or neighbor down the street. Deconstruction is a misuse of words for someone that is reassessing their faith, which is part of the normal Christian walk (to examine yourself to see if you are in the faith). Deconstruction means just what it is says, to undo what was constructed, period. Do not be confused and wind up walking away from Jesus because someone started this deconstruction movement and redifined it's meaning. You can not decide to redifine what the Bible says based on your feelings. This word deconstuction is just a gateway word used to confuse people into thinking that they have a right redefine their Faith based on their 'OWN UNDERSTANDING". The devil is crafty.

As a young person I read the original Left Behind books, heard a lot of the same types of sermons mentioned in this video, and saw Passion of the Christ. None of that traumatized me or even phased me. Still doesn't. If it's true, it's true regardless of how we feel about it. It's no different than disliking the final score of a football game. The outcome is still the same.

I’m sad that these people paint Christianity in such a negative light, and I will keep these people in my prayers so that they return to the Lord. We must remind ourselves that we are in fact sinners and that others are sinners too. We can’t expect every person to represent their religion in the right way (we can only hope for that). Prayer is so powerful… if you don’t understand what you’re enquiring about, pray about it and God will reveal His answer to you.

Well we do not look at who said it; Even creepy old men might tell you to follow the law, that doesn`t make it so you shouldn`t do it.
I do belive in eternal punishment. That is the case if the christian God is true. And then the christian morals are true too, and others are false (and evil, if they are aginst the christian morals)
And if God is true then he is true no matter if the morals and punishments that follows might sound immoral to some.

@@shreyansus Firstly: Judaism is basically Christianity before Jesus came. So I belive it is the same God.
Second: What I wanted to point out was that the reason to leave christianity was their own morals is absurd, because if God is true his morals would be more important, because he has the power.
Third: Jesus said that "after me there will be several false prophets". Islam is a religion based on the prophet Muhammed. I am not sure but doesn`t the quran (that the muslims belive to be the holy word of Allah) contain errors? (Self refuting, like 1 part says one thing and another part says the opposite). I am not sure. Would be interesting to check out that.
If my religion is false then our religion is worthless. "If Jesus never died for our sins and resurrected, then our faith is worthless".

Just so people know, the thoughts and ideas these people are putting forward is their own idea of what Christianity is about. I get the feeling they were not really Christian because if they truly were then they would not be believing this.

@Joy Dorsett You're being used. Organized religion, because it is composed of human beings, is deeply dysfunctional and often cruel. This is true of any organized group of people (including "the dominant culture"). Nevertheless, you are on the right track when you seek fellowship with those seeking to understand the greatest good. The divine. And you are on the wrong track when you align with those who seek to exploit and undermine our institutions for their own profit (and who offer NO viable alternatives). It is easy to criticize , dismantle and deconstruct. Not so easy to pursue the greatest good.

The religion, that thinks it`s morals is comming from God "doesn`t only have morals that agrees with my morals. It must be evil and I cannot belive in evil" is a normal understanding today.
But ones moral values doesn`t matter. If God has other moral values and exists, then he exist. He does not stop to exist because someone got othe morals.
And if he exist everyone will be judged.
