- This is the Thunderbolt 1000 located at 33rd St N. and Mascot at the new Ortiz Elementary School in Wichita Kansas. This siren obviously has some problems because the pitch seems to fluctuate a lot and didn't seem too loud.

Unfortunately you are correct. They replaced a ton of sirens with the cheapest garbage they could find. Still boggles my mind they replaced sirens that had a proven track record for the past 50 years, with cheap garbage that has failed around the US. Hopefully those ATI's find their way to the garbage and we get some 508's.

not even. this thing is the king of sick sirens. its sounds NOTHING like anything even related to a siren. the O fallon sounds similar to a regular thunderbolt

sounds to low pitch... probably bad bearings on the motor/chopper, which would cause it to worble like it is....
If the bearings were bad, the wind-down would be much faster than it should be. This one actually has an abnormally long wind-down. Chances are the commutator brushes are nearly nonexistent, so they're barely making contact. There's probably a lot of arcing, which would explain the pitch fluctuations. The unusually long wind-down probably comes from the lack of friction from the brushes.

@@Thunderbolt1000Tfan It will get to the point where the brushes will lose contact, and disconnect. The motor will just seize up or just sit there and hum until the stator smokes out.

You can really tell this has brush problems due to the passive chopper wind down.
The brushes may be only slightly out of contact with the motor stator which makes arcs. The passive wind down is long because there is no friction! That makes total sense!
It actually sounds cool with that slight reverb.
I talked with the director of Emergency Management here in Sedgwick County and he said that they try to repair all their sirens before replacing them, and then they use replaced ones for parts on others.
It makes a funny sound.

A lot of wichitas thunderbolts either died or are sick. Some worked but not all. Wichita needs to take care of their sirens!

judging that it is rotating in reverse, this seems to be reverse wired, so the blower might actually be sucking air in thru the horn, and the chopper might be running in reverse as well!

The lack of volume is a bad/dying/broken blower/compresser/ and the warbling pitch is probably a failing chopper motor.
What color is the paint on it (supposed) to be?
Its yellow. The camera was facing the sun so it appears black

Why is it running counter clockwise? It should be operating in the other direction.I am wondering if it were wired in reverse polarity which could cause the rotator to run backward , and or the chopper motor is running in reverse which is pulling air in from the horn and getting canceled out by the blower?

+Blue10AEMia Actually yes. Theoretically he is right. Evidence: Thunderbolts and pretty much all tornado siren rotate clock-wise, when the siren is deactivated it suddenly rises in pitch. This could be the blower turning off before the chopper motor because the chopper motor is running at a higher RPM. if the blower doesn't work this way, the rise could be some sort of mechanical failure.
+LeFo listen, ACA sirens are supposed to run counterclockwise, and the rotational direction of a thunderbolt has nothing to do with it's sound. I should know, I work on sirens.

If this got fixed there wouldn't have been a need to replace it with an ATI but Wichita being Wichita thought this was Unfixable and was time to replace it.

Either the motor on it is going bad,there is something blocking the chopper or the bearings are baf
dill pill bad brushes and/or collector rings. When these components are faulty the chopper doesn’t get a good electrical connection which causes the pitch fluctuations
