My feelings have always been mixed about this bottling. It is tasty, but goes down like water and thus is actually quite expensive (even though it’s cheap) in that I go through a bottle quickly. It has a wonderful profile that has been horribly neutered. Give this to us at 46% and I’ll gladly pay the extra. 100% agreement with your points on this whisky. Well said!

Regarding chill filtration and how I learned about it. When I was starting to explore whisky I kept track of my personal scores. After a while I noticed that all my highest scoring whiskies were 46% or above. I mentioned this in passing to a more experienced whisky drinker and he suggested it was likely due to the whisky being non-chill filtered and then he explained the process to me. To me this is proof that worrying about chill filtration is not about connoisseur snobbery, it really does strip a whisky of flavor.

My favourite online Whiskyshop in Austria, sells a Benromach from 2009, as German Exclusive with 48% , Natural colour and Unchillfiltered. But this is limited to 1198 Bottles. Thats the way it should be. Without the limitation off course.

I held off on buying the 10 year old until I was on holiday in an area with poor selection of single malts. I do love the distillery profile and its a delight to drink, but there was something tangible missing. It's a malt that goes most of the way but doesn't get there in the end.
Luckily there are still a few dusty bottles of the (old packaging) Peat Smoke Sherry (59.9%) and the incredible 10 year old 100 proof (57%) in my area. The 10 yo 100 proof is easily the best Benromach I've ever tasted, and is currently in the top 5 whiskies I've had ever. If you come across any of these bottles, clear the shelves

I bought the Benromach 'Peat Smoke Sherry Cask Matured' 2012 / 2021 46%.' The 46% does really make a difference. I wish more versions like this were available.
I agree it is an awkward signature. It's a whisky that's rough, divisive and interesting - perfect for whisky geeks. But they bottle it like they are targeting casual whisky drinkers. If they made it 46%, I have no doubt this will start to get the same recognition and respect as Campbeltown malts and integrity whiskies like Arran.
If the owners are still nervous about making it 46%, they should take small steps, like just making the 15YO 46%, as Redbreast does. Even that will give us whisky geeks something to treasure.

I just got my first bottle of this and I am really enjoying it. Sure, it would absolutely be much better at 46% and UCF, but for me, this is a trainer/palate conditioner for getting into the smokier/peatier side of Scotch whisky, early in my journey toward hoping to appreciate the offerings from Islay and the Islands. I got Highland Park 12 and hated its burnt rubber finish (to my tastes). Benromach 10, the smoky finish is enjoyable to me. While it may lack some integrity, it will well serve my palate development and perhaps be a stepping stone to enjoying the Lagavulins, Ardbegs and Laprhoigs. I'm not prepared for them now, but I am slowly working my way towards appreciating their qualities. For that I am grateful and I will thoroughly enjoy Benromach 10 around my backyard campfire this summer. Ralfy, thank you for your guidance, you are an international treasure when it comes to integrity whisky, you have helped me to discover some of my very favorite pours and to responsibly appreciate Quality over Quantity. God bless & Slainte!

For a time, Benromach was one of our best selling malts in the shop. The branding was never fantastic but it was interesting and people asked about it. It was a great conversation starter for what is, despite chill-filltration, a delicious whisky. Since the rebrand, the bottles just blend into the shelf, people look straight past them. Since the rebranded stock arrived I could count on two hands how many bottles we have sold. It's so sad to see since I have visited the distillery, they are lovely people there and they are doing so much right at the site itself.

I can agree…I like natural whisky! I finished Glenfarclas 12 Ch. filtered and continue to Glen Moray 8 from Independent bottler 46% all natural during one evening. It was huge different…So more spicy and more flavours if you compare…and younger was much more tasty…it’s without logic make good spirit and remove flavour in last step like you told us. Thank you.

Tried this for the first time about 2 months ago. Thought it was absolutely fantastic. Went in to my local shop and he had 2 versions of it. The new style branding you have in this video and the older style bottling in the gold box.
I asked what the difference was and he informed me that is was Purely packaging and the spirit was the same.
When he asked 'which one do you want?' I said 'doesn't bother me if it's the same whiskey' so he opted to give me the older style of branding bottle.
Glad he did now as I can see from your reviews its not the same spirit at all.
Gone from a score of 89 to 84.
Shame as I really did enjoy this whiskey but am wary of buying it again now after seeing this review and being aware of all the other great whiskeys out there.

I've always liked Benromach and the folks in the distillery shop were absolutely fantastic went I last visited. I picked up the 3x 20cl taster pack and I absolutely loved the peat smoke. The organic bottling was also really nice and slightly fresher. I agree (and even my wife commented on it too) that the newer labeling doesn't do the brand any justice at all. Couple that with the lower abv and chill filtration and it's true what you are saying by they are really putting a dampener on what they could be. The older bottlings (which I still have a peat smoke) look much better (in my opinion anyway). I've recently bought the cask strength 10 yr and another of the newer peat smoke contrast bottles to compare them at some point but I'll be honest, I'm enjoying my 10yr Arran at the moment too much to open the others yet!

Amen Ralpy. Keep preaching! Regarding chill filtration, in my neck of woods where whisky is literally a joke of a commodity with about 100% tax and severely uneducated crowd swarming to grab maccallan 12. 15, 18($530-600), etc and the usual, Diageo sewage and all of that, I once mentioned the difference in the nose I detected between glendronach 12 chill/non-chill versions. and immediately I got stoned and banished from the online community imbued with Diageo marketing team and importing companies, just people in the business. But I survived and these days with all the heat and much longer air time, the difference has led to a significant difference in the palate too. I find more aroma, balanced clean flavors and longer finish in the non-chill filtration bottle. but Lord have mercy on me if I wanted to spew words along these lines. hell no.
    It's a weird society 😕
Anyways. I watch your videos when I need whisky education. That's all I do. I appreciate your time and effort, and your modesty.
As a side, could you do Benromach Organic once again? Before I recently bought the bottle I'd watched your review first and you gave it 88, commenting if this was a higher proof and came with a little longer maturation it would've gotten 90. Well, it DID improve on both ends. And I'd love to have your take on it!

Great points well made. Recently I have experienced a plethora of indies bottled at cask strength and, I gotta say, they are a class apart. They show what could be done by the distilleries themselves if they had the drive to do so. Yes, they're all obviously driven by profit and the generic market, but more should cater directly to the enthusiasts with at least a few properly done expressions.

  • @Nikolay_Nikolov

I haven't tasted the new USSR style bottling, but have very fond memories of the old one with the golden packaging. Tasty stuff and what I find very appealing it lacks this obiquitous sweetness that many modern "crowd pleasing" malts have. IMHO that sweetness, mostly induced by PX, flattens the profile.
All good things aside, that 43 % ABV really neuters Benromach core range. If Gordon & MacPhail ups it to 46%, Benromach has every chance to reach cult status among whisky enthusiasts. Their feedback for the old 100 imperial proof bottling and the contemporary high ABV releases shoould have clued them in by now.
    Cheers!

Easily the best Ralfy video I've seen so far (following for four years). You're a difficult b'stard Ralfy but by God you speak the truth.
Bought this about 2 weeks ago expecting big bang for the buck having just finished off a Benriach 10 and a Benriach (smoky edition) which were outstanding, so what could go wrong? Speyside, 10-year-old, first cask fill.
Unfortunately, this was disappointing (starting to wonder if I should trust the other channels I follow cos they all said it was great - I fear Jorst may be compromised).
Couldn't put my finger on it, but Ralfy nailed it in this video: it just lacks the umph. The nose doesn't cut it (although there is some smoke that Ralphy didn't mention). The taste has a lot of peppers and spices but a preimium - I had to drink half a bottle before I got to realize it.
As Ralfy so succinctly put it - it could be so much more.

I just bought 2 bottles on sale in Denmark (2 for 500 Kroner) = 64€ for two witch i found very fair, it is like 35% to 40% Discount. I also have an almost empty old bottle, and i will save it and pour it over from the new once, as i also like the old bottle more. But this is a good Single Malt.....i am not into peated whiskey, so this one i just right for me with just barly the note of it present. I only drink a few glasses of whiskey every week, usually on a friday and saturday, so they last a long time. This whiskey i really enjoy in the fall witch we are about to enter now, always reminds me of walking in the new fallen yellow and red leaves in the forrest, and hearing the wind take hold in the trees. Thanks for all you're insight and sharing it with us Ralfy, with kind regards Thomas from Denmark.

Great review as always Ralfy. Chill filtration will never make sense to me either...it costs money to do and is only done for cosmetic.purposes. To keep those who drink whisky but who don't drink whisky happy. Exactly the same reason for adding E150 colourant. Thankfully there are plenty of alternatives and choices available who show a little more respect to real malt fans.

Well, that was quite the rant Ralfy, not that I disagreed with anything you said as I have held the same opinion for quite some time. There are times when I will buy a characterful malt at 40-43% (and therefore chill filtered) but that is only because of the price. Recently I bought a pair of "Soviet-style" Benromach 10 only because it was on sale for $50 Canadian (30 pounds/US$37). A few weeks later I paid a very small premium (C$10 more) for a couple of bottles of the old design Benromach 10 gathering dust in a local store. Indeed these could be better at 46% and NCF which is why I also bought the 2013 Cask Strength. As for Glengoyne that you mentioned they are pricier and I've been giving them a miss until the Cask Strength (Batch 8 and 10) turned up at almost the same price as the 10 year old. Craft presentation all the way baby!

I do not know if it is also chill filtered but at 46% I think it may not have been. It t is 8 years old. It might make an interesting side by side comparison with the 10 year old core range reviewed here, and it is a lot more reasonably priced than the cask strength version.

Some of the problem is the newbies, the green whisky consumers. The ones that don't understand what they are drinking or tasting. The more of those types of consumers that are out there not knowing or caring what they are buying, the more the industry is going to cater to them. Not take care of the experienced whisky consumer like us who enjoy and care what we are drinking. It becomes tough to have the integrity bottles made for the malt mate when the average consumer just buys the BRAND and doesn't care. I just don't get it. Thanks again Ralfy. Looking for to the next Diamond bottle review. Hopefully something I can reasonably price in the states.

Ralfy, you should give a try to Benromach Contrasts Series. They're 46%, Non chill-filtered, Natural color and have distilling&bottling date.

yeah, in Canada chill filtration plagues many if not most available malts. Perhaps at some flagship liquor stores do we have any of the good stuff (and then its less than a hundred bottles in the entire province at most). The days when I could walk into a local store and get some nice cask strength are behind us. Still sitting on my stash and not buying much new. sadly.

    Hello Ralfy,
I go for the Cask-Strength Versions of Benromach. They are unchillfitered . I love the 2009 Batch4.
Unfortunatly i first got aware of Benromach after the Redesign to that Red/White Look. I really like the Character of it. They are always full-flavored with lovely Egdes.
Thanks for your Thoughts and Opinion.

These are some good points. 43% abv should set alarm bells ringing. I have an open bottle of Benromach 100% proof from 2018, and it is exquisite stuff, showcasing what Benromach is capable of. The 10 year old delivers good value for money, mind you, but as you say, its potential to be great is yet to be realised.

Tough times ahead, Ralfy. Yet here we are, distilleries kicking out sub-par bottlings for top dollar. Prime example, 2022 Talisker 18. Have a look at the price of that compared to a year ago. Crazy. Batten down the hatches, folks.

Glad you drove the point home so well and I pray that they do end up listening, I was curious to know what you think about people (me included) who say that all (if not most) whiskey should be released at cask strength (no filtration, color, or water added) and let the buyers lower the proof as they see fit?

Aaran does rebranding right. Kilkerran and the old Ben Riach worked for me. Springbank of the north indeed. I gave away my bottle of Benromach 10 after two drams. Agree comments on Glengoyne... haven't been back to that one for three years.

I always liked the old bottling. Lovely stuff in the 15 and the ‘imperial strength’ edition at full proof. First fill casks. Sweet yet also peaty and vibrant. One of the best bangs for the buck. The new bottling is awful and somehow USSR/CCP looking. I have no complaints about the old bottlings. I bought them for a steal years ago.

It is payday. So I went on my online shop and looked for something I never had before. I was a littke bit worried at the young age but I had excellent NAS coming from good casks before. So I gave it a try. When I got home with it, pure a dram and at my first sniff I knew it will be smthng good. Taste brought what the nose suggested. It still feels young. I would be curious of a 14yr version of the same. For the chill filtering... would be interesting to experience without it. Who knows. Maybe the batches had an awful hazy look, they had no other option

Ralfy, would love to hear your thoughts on "brands" using the term Non Chill Filtered deceptively on label when bottling strength is 40-43 and perhaps another form of filtration has been used. Seeing it more now in Ireland, using Non Chill Filtered as a selling point yet the whiskey has been Filtered by other means and diluted.

As a hobby I quick-age whiskey in toasted oak wood chips. I normally cold-age it in the refrigerator (inside temp is ~54ºF or 12ºC). Afterward I filter through a standard sieve and cheesecloth. Sometimes I filter it through a fine-mesh tea infuser. Am I accidentally chill-filtering because I filter it at that above temp? If so, would letting it age at room temp during its last week of aging open it up and make a difference? FYI the ABV is normally 49-52%. Thoughts?

Besides Lagavulin 16, nothing in my top 100 whiskies has been chill filtered. A 46% UCF Laga 16 would be a beast, given the prices of it now, it really should be presented like that. Benromach are Brilliant, but could be a top tier whisky with consistent integrity.

The 43% and Chill Filtration is the only reason why I do not own a bottle of Benromach. For many other distilleries, I can understand chill filtration. I cannot accept GM do this to Benromach and other GM bottlings. I vote with my wallet.

I went through an airport duty free last week and thought I'd take a quick look at the whisky section. Just a bunch of glitzy bottles with 40% orange alcohol inside (and I didn't bother to check, but you just know most of them were chill-filtered). I saw nothing that interested me - except for the GlenDronach - for about a second, until I remembered what happened there :( - and so I left, and bought nothing. Most interesting thing around there was the Four Pillars Navy Strength Gin. Drink less, buy less, ladies and gents. They're not Pokemons - we don't need to catch em all!

I think that for the majority of your viewers, the label on the bottle doesn't matter. In terms of chill filtration, there was once a big blind tasting of the Malt Manicas. The result was something like this: Chill-filtered whiskey tastes different from non-chill-filtered whiskey. However, whiskey that is not chill-filtered does not automatically taste better. And by the way the whisky are generally filtered anyway. I personally prefer a product that has changed as little as possible. So I am on your side, looking foward to the diamond
