I play the chord and sing the note on each string. Then I start singing in harmony with the chord. Nonsense sounds. Later I can replace the nonsense sounds with real words.

    Hello there.
I am just beginning to learn guitar at age of 50. I have come across a few different channels that offer some really good sound advice. It seems that your channel is going to be just as good or better then others. Look forward to your lessons.
On that note. I noticed in your vids the busy background is very very distracting.
The white wall punches the monitors and your clothing and its a big mix of blur. Taking the eye off you and guitar.
Other channels I have noticed same thing.
One channel that seems great with clear focus on the guitar, he uses a darker shade cloth background and a picture in picture of either the white board or close up of guitar while showing finger movements.
The second picture with close up. I think is just as important as the lesson being taught.
    Anyway just my 2 cents.
    Thanks and cheers

@joshuakeegwell2896, thanks for your feedback and glad you liked the lesson :)
This video is an edit of a livestream I did a while back, so not your typical video.
In other videos, I do close up angles when showing certain things on the guitar.
Sometimes I may do pic in pic, but mostly close up angle when needed.

Thank you Diana and Simon for a super valuable lesson. When I sing in the car I sound great but when I sing with the guitar, it is flat (thats why I started learning fingerstyle. ) As Diana pointed out, where you emphasise words is important. I think one needs to listen very carefully. I could never sing like Elvis or Freddy Mercury but I will strive to improve on Dylan.

Thanks for the video. Couldn't sing since my voice broke but started writing my own songs so needed to sing. Initially singing was bad but it did help to keep my playing in time. And found voice improved the more I sang. Now also sing in a choir as I find that exercises the voice 'muscle' even more.

It's completely wrong-headed to work off a chord chart with the syllables broken out; no one should need it in principle because no one is learning a song they haven't heard before, so the information is superfluous anyway, it's much better to learn the structure of the song by heart then just work on the lyrics separately.

In practice, I've found this to be an effective approach for many students. If we cannot line up the rhythm of the lyric with the rhythm of the chord changes there is going to be the risk of inconsistency and rhythmic instability, and the song can come out slightly differently each time it's performed. That uncertainty is communicted in the performance. Without breaking things down we'd also be limited to playing material that existed within our current comfort zone/ability -and many people would like to learn to sing and play more complex rhythms or riffs while singing. In my experience, it's also common for people to hear a song they don't know well, enjoy it, and want to add it to their repertoire - or to be in a position where they need to learn a number of songs for a gig, and not all of them are songs they know already. Another aspect of this is depth of knowledge. Sometimes we've heard a song a bunch of times and we consider ourselves to know it well, but a different depth of knowledge is required to understand and accurately perform it. Without getting crystal clear on how the lyrics relate rhythmically to the music, we risk a trial and error approach to performance, and that can really undermine confidence and enjoyment. So I stand by my advice. :)

Why would this channel keep deleting my replies??🤣😆
Are you that insecure that you can't bear it if anyone has a different opinion to you? wtaf???🤷‍♂

@@WahrheitMachtFrei. I have no idea how that has happened as I have never deleted any replies on my channel.
If they were totally inappropriate replies I would delete them, but I am fine with people not agreeing with me.

There was a reason I did not make the 5th grade chorus but will give this a go! Thanks Simon.

Singing and playing simultaneously is daunting for a beginner but the points that Diana made will help me get there. Thanks Simon for another good lesson.

@@acousticguitarlessons Yes - I have found that I need to be able to play the guitar part (uke, actually) without even thinking about it, and THEN I can sing too.
