Hahaha! Love this video. I have gone through a similar process. I sold my Starclassic bb kit because i got tired of lugging it around! It is heavy! I gig 2-3 times per week and prefer light drums, basic 4 piece, good heads, travel light! From my perspective you made the right choice.
Oh my! The Starclassic Walnut/Birch kit has the same die cast hoops, tom mounting system and floor tom legs as Tama’s flagship Star line. Lacquer fade finish vs a wrap and a super punchy 20”? Hands down Tama SC Walnut/Birch for the win.
Almost the same tom mounting system and floor tom legs as Tama Star. The rubber feet on the floor tom legs are different and the rack tom mount on Stars has an extra piece that extends to the bottom hoop. I’m not sure that Chris understood that the somewhat wobbly nature of both the rack tom and floor tom legs is an intentional design, meant to enhance resonance. No comparison between those kits. Starclassic for the win. Extra weight is a small sacrifice for better everything. Besides, Chris looks like a strong lad.
I just recently had to make a big decision myself.I sold 99% of a 50 year collection. I've owned many high end kits from most of the manufacturers over the years. The thing is I don't gig anymore due to health issues at 70 years old.I really don't need an EXPENSIVE kit , I just like to continue drumming at home.I just passed on a $3000 six pc kit, and bought a $1200 seven pc concept maple pdp, pearlesent wht. Lacquer finish, unbelievable kit.Drums and cymbals got very very exspinsve these days. I'm glad that there are kits available today such as pdp, tama, gretsch, and mapex that are built really good for under $1500.These are great kits and don't break the bank. The fit and finish are fantastic, other then some of the heads they come with.So happy younger or weekend players can obtain kits like this in today's market.
Agreed, it’s hard to buy a “bad” instrument these days (it’s possible of course but you know what I mean). As a working musician my view is that “enough instrument” is all you need. I value reliability, easy of transport and affordability above all else, for my circumstances anyway. Thanks so much for watching and commenting.
I would never have a second thought selling the Superstar . The Starclassic is superior in every way . I would sell the Club Jam and the Superstar and keep the Starclassic
Hah yeah you’re right. No is solid the stage custom. It’s doing duty in a community band. The Superstar is a better kit all round than the stage custom. But watch this space for my new review of the Satin Lacquer Club Jam. It’s an improvement over the wrap ones. Thanks for watching.
It sucks that people always have to get offended and make depreciating comments about other people's choices. I love my Starclassics and would have kept them, but they also stay in the studio most of the year and I use my old Superstar Hyperdrives for gigging, ironically. You do you based on what you need, the Superstar and Club Jam are definitely better suited for lots of moving around.
But having said that, I am no gear snob and I don’t slag off another drummer‘s choice in brand or cymbals. We’re all different. We are all drummers here and this is a worldwide community. There’s nothing like it in the music world. Rock that SSC. Cheers from the States.
Yes they are. The hardware is probably why the Starclassic are heavier. I have no issues at all with the lighter hardware and hoops on the Superstar. As good as any I’ve used on any kit (and I’ve had a few…)
Oh man, what a mistake to sell the superior kit. What you'll find is that the cheaper, thinner metal parts on the Superstar Classic will strip out and break fairly quickly if you really gig a lot. Like those exact wing nuts and tom mount brackets you showed on the Superstar--I've seen these fail on a house kit that isn't very old and was not abused. In contrast, the MIJ Starclassic Birch kit I bought new in 2005 was my primary gigging kit for 18 years, and I still use it for some situations despite upgrading to Starclassic Maple in 2023. I've never had anything break in all those years with my old Starclassic kit, and the new one is just as robust despite being made in China. Superstar Classic just will not stand up to that kind of wear and tear. And of course, the Starclassic also gives you better tone and ease of tuning that comes with the higher craftsmanship of a pro kit. You get what you pay for.
Totally disagree I play a ddrum se flyer that I paid 249 brand new when they first hit the market I gig weekly with it no cases or bags throw them in my trunk they have been rained on there is nothing wrong with them at all 5 + years if they do ever fall apart I might get a used sonor maple kit 20” bass drum for around 4-500 bucks and keep going mic the bass drum and you don’t know what your playing but I imagine I got 5 more years left on the ad drum kit
@@roccobovenzi7018 well if you're going to abuse your instruments, you might as well abuse cheap instruments. I buy quality instruments and take care of them so they last decades and always sound great whether it's on stage or in my recording studio. But hey, you do you. Peace.
@@drumPhil42 you are delusional. Also when you die you cant take your drumset with you and i suspect if cared for both of these sets they would last a lifetime
I personally haven’t seen or played any starcalssic maple drums. But I would put money on it that they are made at the exact same factory with the exact same raw materials. Probably the exact same shells.
I would keep the Starclassic if it were me, but keep what speaks to you. I have a Sonor SQ1 and it’s a brilliant kit, but the weight makes me hate it. I understand. Same for DW. Too damn heavy. For volume, thicker shells are better. But for club gigs, no point in having a heavy kit.
Of course, the Starclassic is the higher quality kit, but not by much. As a working musician I value gear that is reliable, versatile and easy to transport while being affordable. Most of my students are hobbyists and many have far more expensive drum or guitar set ups than me. However, I view gear differently as it is a tool with which I do my job. Sadly this perspective can take away from the experience of owning top tier equipment- I don’t need it to do my job, and of course funds are limited. Thanks so much for watching.
This is all nice and good but begs the question: Why did you film all this outside in the cold? 😅 I always feel bad for drums when they're "exposed" to cold. Drums are indoor pets! 😄

You made correct choice ! I’m looking to get the exact same kit! And color love that ice ash look
Good choice! It’s all you need. Thanks for watching

All great kits. Thanks so much for watching
I found the walnut birch to have a warmer, more pleasing tone than my relatively drier sounding 86 superstars.
Were the 86 Superstars all birch as they were originally?
It must an age thing ! Lighter weight drums, hardware etc we all seem to love now !😄 Love the videos. SStill got the stage custom ?

It’s all healthy debate, no worries. Thanks for watching

Yeah, and honestly with good heads well tuned most kits work. I’ve just put coated G2 heads on the Superstar toms and they sound great.
Are those diecast hoops on th Starclassic? I prefer a more simple drum myself. I would go with lighter drum with lighter hardware.
Yes they are. The hardware is probably why the Starclassic are heavier. I have no issues at all with the lighter hardware and hoops on the Superstar. As good as any I’ve used on any kit (and I’ve had a few…)

Horses for courses. The Superstar is good quality for what it is and I prefer it. Thanks so much for watching.

I recently got the Nebula Mappa Burl Starclassic kit, I absolutely love it. I was thinking of the Ssc but I'm delighted I went with the Starclassic
Nice 👍
Thanks ✌
I think it’s best to keep the drum set that would fit the music you play the most. Too bad you can’t keep both.
Thanks for watching !
Sell them both and get the starclassic bobinga set.
Thanks for watching

Yeah great question, but my studio is a bit small for such a video. Thanks so much for watching
The Superstar seems so cheaply made, I wouldn’t bother with that cheap shit, life’s too short
It’s genuinely not cheaply made, honestly. And it sounds really good. Thanks for watching.
