Very much familiar with this since I was born and raised in Ottawa. The mall has unfortunately lost its luster only in the last 5 years. The mall was approved for redevelopment but now they need to act. I've done a few videos of this mall for my channel and the mall has lost more stores each time I film this. Even as Westclox shut down in the 80s, the mall thrived because it was a regional draw. You filmed this on my birthday. 😂 😂 great video.
Thank you for highlighting LaSalle Peru. I have been there so many times since I have family living in LaSalle County. My Aunt did all her shopping there. My cousins still go there. My grandparents lived on a farm near Utica.
Nice video and a bit of history for this area. Kind of wished it had been a little slower so I could have seen if there were any remnants of my 5th GGGrandfather's shoe factory (one of the first buildings along First St.) that was originally on First just before Marquette but later moved to First St. between Marquette and Joliet which were two of the streets you drove down. So awesome to see where some of my ancestors built some of their life history at and where some of my family was once raised. Thanks for the video.
I lived in Peru and went to LPHS as a part Freshman and Sophomore around 1965. Loved living there and fell in love my first time there. Played Football Basketball and Golf. Great town to live in, had lots of friends. We moved a lot. My father ran the Wesclox plant mentioned. We moved there from Lake Forest, moved to Cincinnati after and after Cinci to Peterborough where he ran General Time/Wesclox of Canada. 4 high schools.
Thanks again for another great educational video. All your videos are very well done and not sloppy like a lot others. Sure u will hit the 100k subscriber this year. All the best!
When I was an over the road truck driver I stopped overnight a few times at the Flying J truck stop you pull into at the end of the video, and I’d walk down into LaSalle. I really like the place. Quiet, old fashioned feel to the place. It’s been probably 15 years but it looks the same.
the building at 7:08 with the cupola-like tower used to be a music studio (called Kirzeder's, after Harold K. the owner)) on the second floor, in the 1950's. Accordion, guitar, and drum ;lessons.
Visited Peru/LaSalle several years ago on a trip out to Starved Rock. There is a cool little place called Lock 14 where you can ride a canal boat pulled by a mule up and down a section of the old canal. Definitely a neat stop if you are in the area. LaSalle has some very cool looking old buildings too, great architecture. Just wish the local economy was doing better to bring them back to their former glory. Perhaps Illinois will get it figured out someday, I just hopes it happens before somebody gets the "genius" idea of redeveloping them.
I'm a progressive kind of person who is actually considering a place like this currently. I determined I can't move to Indianapolis and I wouldn't care for it so something came along here and I just may take the offer.

Audio back! I used to drive between Chicago and Peoria every other week and used to stop at a truck stop in Peru for a pit stop. Guess I should have wandered into the town!
People consider Indiana a truckstop too even the huge city of Indianapolis . I once wanted to check Peoria out too btw but looks like I could be going to Peru maybe. I got a potential offer to move there I am reviewing now.
Been there a bunch of times. I envy the small town charm of them. Specially LaSalle. I used to live in Normal and every once in a while go up to Peru/ LaSalle for business purposes
Both seem a step up from most of the other videos on small towns in that area. They appear to be service industry towns now. With income of 50k+ it looks like a lot of retired folks working part time supplementing Soc Sec/pensions. Those same folks would explain the low crime rate too. With anchor store Penneys gone, the only way out for the mall is to redevelop that entire area. The tough part is the higher taxes problem.

Still a good looking town to me. I am looking for a new place to live and this seems like the place I could do well in and I also got an offer to move here too for a lower cost .. roughly 1 tenth of the cost of where I am now. And if I don't like it guess what, I am put closer to the Omaha area where I wanted to go to begin with. It would be a shorter ride at least. Win win for me. Nothing to lose. Not saying it's 1/10 of the cost for everyone but for me it would be.
