Why I love Jesus but WON’T follow him

  • Jesus’ teachings weren’t all good. Some I admire, but others make little sense when viewed outside the context of his actual character as a Jewish apocalyptic prophet. Jesus allowed slavery and advocated for retributive justice as a result of his apocalyptic view, for instance.
Here I talk apocalypticism, evil, social justice, teaching morality through story, guarding moral stories as a matter of identity, and why I'm not a Christian. My perspective on what it means to be a Christian is influenced by my experience as an ex-Evangelical, but hopefully this deconstruction of Jesus’ moral teachings is of some value to those with different experiences.

One issue I've found with claiming to be a "Follower of Jesus" is everyone has their own idea of what Jesus is about. Because Jesus is thought to be the perfect model for humanity everyone grafts their own personal values onto him. Was Jesus a pacifist or did he sometimes advocate violence? Was Jesus liberal or conservative? It depends on who you ask.

I also see them as someone who genuinely wants to help people and give them the best time of their lives, even it it only lasts for a few moments. So nice to hear this. I have never been a believer of any kind (family was nominally Catholic), but I once got into an online argument with a stauch atheist because I said the Bible is an important historic source. She proceeded to excoriate me for "believing in talking animals etc," completely missing the point that any ancient book is a record of the culture and era that produced it.
My own view of Christ is as a reformer, critical of the hypocrisy of his time, caught up in an apocalyptic expectation. Somehow he was associated with Jewish zealots and was executed as a political subversive. When the apocalypse didn't happen his followers re-interpreted his stories (and life) and came up with Christianity.

I would even go to lengths as to asking why there are rituals in the first place. Jesus did say "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the father except through me" but many Christians denominations substitute Christ for their rituals.

There are definitely good things you can take out of the bible and teach them in a morally good way. Sadly there is also the opposite. From personal experience: my dad always uses God as his own opinion amplifier.
For example: You don't need to care for the environment, because the bible tells mankind to subdue the earth and have dominion over it! (yes he really said that)
I guess that is always the problem with literature, people can pick out the things they like or find morally right, and take that as a confirmation. But the morality in this case doesn't come from the book, it has been decided what is good when picking whatever you need as confirmation.

Neuroimaging studies indicate that when people are asked to think about what God believes or values, they tend to wind up engaging the parts of their brain to do with what they themselves believe. This is distinguishable from when they are asked to think about what other people (both real people, and imagined characters such as aliens or cartoon characters, as it turns out) believe.
It's reasonable to infer that most people don't like to see themselves as actively harmful in ways that might not be forgivable, so their conception of ultimate authority are going to be congruent with their own ideals.

It confuses me that it's so hard to grasp that non-Christians can embrace certain of the ethical values attributed to Jesus. I'm not a Buddhist, either, but I find a lot of great ethical guidance from Buddhism, as well. But to be a balanced thinker and actor in the world, it's critical to view all of these structures objectively in order to gather the best overall view possible and then form a framework off of which to base our thinking and behavior.

This is disingenuous to the religions (since you refuse to fully appriate the religions, the good and the bad) and to yourself (since you're merely using religions as props to push a particular moral/ethical agenda, which is ironically, not very moral or ethical).

Yet another awesome video. I deconverted from Christianity when I was 16, and was harassed by my family to the point where I was sobbing at school in fear of having to return home, and almost left for a shelter at one point. Less than half a year later, I convinced myself I was actually a 'nontheological Christian'. That lasted for almost a decade. It was basically a way for me to hide my atheism from my family without just nodding along to all of their fundamentalist beliefs. (Not implying that this is why other nontheologican Christians identify as such; this was simply my own experience.) I also went to a Christian middle school and high school, went to church multiple times a week, etc., so it was a significant part of my life and identity pre-deconversion.
Now that I'm at a place in my life where I feel secure on my own, I'm starting to be more open about my beliefs.. Anyone's guess how it'll go, but videos like these are indispensable as I try to articulate my thoughts!

The idea that, say, certain criminals were fighting evil and corruption simply because they robbed banks and trains (banks and railroad companies were not popular) led to re-casting common thugs as Old West versions of Robin Hood. That was helped along by dime novels written even as outlaws robbed banks, trains, stagecoaches, and anyone else who had what they needed/wanted.
Or think of any story that gets shared around social media. The actual events are often more complex and interesting, or people decided that a horrific crime needed further embellishment, or that something _had_ to have happened this way or that because it fit their ideas.
Mercedes Lackey had some fun with this in her Tarma and Kethry stories. Drew , I’m from Tn , dead center of the Bible Belt. I grew up in Southern Baptist church. You are a remarkable young man. I think there’s a lot of religious trauma imbedded in us. I never doubted my faith , until my mom was killed by a drunk driver. It sent me into a tailspin on my beliefs. Curiosity, and grief , set my path on fire to understand, why I had believed in this mythological being that was so kind and loving. When in fact , he didn’t appear kind and loving at all. I realized I had been controlled my entire life, by fear. According to the church, the devil is always on my tail , and if I dnt believe, he will consume me. Not to mention, the cult I had been raised in , would no longer accept me. I struggle today with saying I do not worship Jesus or God. That fear envelopes me , when I’m honest. I find my self still praying to someone I dnt believe exists , out of habit , not belief. How do you let go of the guilt and shame, the fear that organized religion dished out so freely. I realize my writing isn’t scholarly, I’m expressing it the best I can. I appreciate your channel so much. I believe ppl can be kind and loving , w out organized religion. But now she has found a partner in her late age, and she realised that she had to look at what was happening around her, and question is God really was going to save us all. One thing that i can say from a catholic perspective, is that good can always come from bad. Something that happened quite recently to one of my best friends was his dad died from cancer after a couple of years and left behind 7 kids a few not more then 10. They were devote catholics (and still are). Many would say that it is unfair of God to allow something like that, but after awhile i almost wish that that kind of death would befall me or my loved ones because although he and his family suffered greatly, they had a chance to say goodbye and share all that they could with each other before he died. and it’s something i wish i could have with everyone of my loved ones, the chance to say goodbye. Many people like you didnt get that chance. But, even the most terrible situations can have good come out of them. That’s something that you will have to find for yourself, spread awareness, tell others to appreciate the time that they have with their loved ones and make sure you are at the best relationship with the rest as you dont know when or how they might die. Death sucks, but if you only ever see the bad in it you will prevent your self from seeing good in other places, don’t let that happen, especially if you are very uncertain of what lies after. Make yourself the best you can be because if you dont, your mothers life becomes all the less worthless as it only made you and others suffer and squanders the potential that you have to make yourself and others happy.

WHY ARE THEY UNABLE TO SUDDENLY DEAL WITH THEIR OWN SEEDS THAT START GROWING AND BECAME TO BE AS HUMANS? If males do not ask hard questions from themselves and do not change then complaining about the topic: it`s no use. For MALE was created 1st - that means: on the shoulders of males lays the most. There`s a reason MALES were created in the shape of a match cup - to TRULY STAND STRONG AND BE STRONG. A man sharing his seed here and there IS NOT A STRONG NOR WISE MAN. Raising up all the seeds man has share`d - and raising them up in truth - THEN WE CAN SAY: THAT MAN IS STRONG AND WISE ALSO.

If under your care are more then 1 child and only one shares your blood and you ain`t gonna feet them, you are then PURE EVIL. And no, being a MALE OR FEMALE ain`t matter here. for to make a child - both: MALE AND FEMALE IS NEEDED. Raising a child/children is the obligation of both. And if one can`t deal with raising a child/children then why sleeping around? Learn to ignore your fleshly desires. Learn to have control over your body. We already have billions broken souls, WHY ON EARTH WE ARE BUSY TO MAKE MORE? No, i`m not against having children and multiplying the earth with new generations. What i am against is: PRODUCING BROKEN SOULS. It is no good.
take care all the children living under your roof or the same will happen as was between 2 1st brothers ever lived on earth: CAIN AND ABLE. Jealously comes forth and one amongst these children, later in life, end up dead way before his or her time. Why? - because a child`s soul is broken. A child do not fully understand all the reasons why adults love one child more then others. That`s usually a reason why later in life, these children are enemies to each other. Raising a child/children, do not care about your own pride and opinions form other humans nor even your owns, CARE ABOUT HOW GOD SEES YOU AND TAKES YOU. Wrongly and unraised children = more violence in this world. And who are these who complain the most about this topic:? ADULTS in their old age. If we /all who are parents, no matter here is all the children are blood sharers or not/ make a way for more violence then no right is found for complain. We, older generations, want truly a change in this world, then let`s raise children in truth and in love. Lets be mad only if they do wrong, not because they do not share our genes.
Sadly, all humans ever lived - are wicked sinners, to become a saint - one MUST COME TO REPENTENCE AND BORN AGAIN. What truly means made in the image of GOD? - MADE IN 3. SPIRIT + SOUL + BODY - ALIVE HUMAN/LIVING SOUL. Let`s word it a little different: SPIRIT/GOD CREATED SPIRITS/HUMANS. We, humans are also SPIRIT BEINGS. Already ever lasting beings - that is one of the secrets of life. It`s just the body we live in, that must put on IMMORTALITY. So we, humans can be wholly everlasting beings. To be a human being - all 3 parts must be. It is sad, you still don`t know that nor understand.
Fact: nr.1: LUST AFTER ANOTHER`S HUMAN BODY AIN`T LOVE. True love is: LAYING DOWN ONE`S OWN LIFE /LIKE CHRIST DID FOR US/ SO OTHER`S CAN LIVE. THAT`S LOVE.
Fact nr 2: Real CHURCH IS HUMAN BODY ITSELF, FOR GOD IS A SPIRTI AND DO NOT NEED A BUILDING MADE BY HANDS. Know all the facts there is to know, lest you still be DECEIVED.
Fact nr. 3 Christianity was never a religion. It always been reality. It is time to fully understand that part. How come Christianity can and is reality? - Do some searching about FREEMSONRY.
Fact nr. 4: Being in gender/sex (for me, both words means the same thing) has only one purpose: TO MULTIPLY aka create new generations of humans.
Therefore if like you all stating, that gender and sex is changeable and optionable, then why not a single soul born without reproductive tools? and no, i do not mean here the "intersex" ones. for they born with confused body functions. That`s why they have both tools.
And by trying to change a sex/gender - you are stealing another human`s tools. Someone goes to grave without these.
Do not steal nor envy anything that another human have. But be wise and take care all that was given to you.
Use a little logic and even you are able to list real and logical facts.
If one leaves Christianity too easily, then sadly one haven`t had a clue, what is REAL CHRISTIANIY ALL ABOUT. That is fact nr 5.
Give some time and some chances and another soul comes form atheism to CHRISTIANITY aka become a Christ follower. No money needed to follow CHRIST. but it does cost us a lot: FOLLOWING A CHRIST COST US OUR EARTHLY LIVES.
Real Christian MUST BE WILLING TO SUFFER AND MUST BE WILLING TO LAY DOWN ONES`S LIFE, LIKE CHRIST DID FOR US, THE SAME WE DO FOR CHRIST.
Real Christians must come out from BABYLON AKA MATRIX , not find ways to still be in there.
Matrix is satan`s kingdom. How can you serve GOD in another`s god kingdom? - you can`t, you must make a chose: GOD OR MAMMON/SATAN? Whom you will serve? Where will you be forever: HEAVEN OR IN THE HOT LAKE?
Didn`t you notice? i give 4 more facts. Copy these and remember these.
Family betrayal is very real for ALL WHO FOLLOW CHRIST. in the tribulation period /7years long/ - Future for Christians: SUFFERING: HUNGER AND FREEZING, BETRYAL, MURDER, SHOT - STAB - BEHEADED. Even though we will truly suffer extremely on this earth - let`s rejoice, for out SPIRITS will be in HEAVEN comforted FOREVER. Why that extreme suffering? - BECAUSE WE WILL REJECT SATAN AND HIS MOTB.
And also another way to get stuff cleared out: play little with words:
CHRISTIANITY AND REALITY = BOTH END THE SAME. Last 3 letters in both words: ITY.
Truth is truth and remains a truth - out feelings - wishes - opinions and beliefs DO NOT CHANGE THAT.

The "us vs them" mentality of Catholicism has been a barrier to my relationships with many other people I've come to deeply love and respect. As a Christian who is falling out of her faith, I agree with a lot of things brought up in this video, and while being confronted with opposing beliefs is uncomfortable, it's forcing me to grow. I'm afraid to leave the faith entirely at this point in my life because of familial pressure, but it's comforting to know that you can be a good person that follows tenets of multiple religions and philosophies without needing to have that label. I'm going to try to keep that in mind as I continue on my spiritual journey. Thank you.

All these things, all these works will be burned up. John makes this clear. We can be just as tribal, so it is _very_ important to be as respectful as one can even if there is disagreement. People are multifaceted, so concentrating so much on one particular facet (i.e. their religiosity or lack thereof) while ignoring all of the others really does a disservice to the person. We really are all wells of infinite depth, and no one is as shallow as any stereotype.

As a former evangelical I cannot think of another word to describe Drew other than a ‘blessing’ -although the connotation means it comes from a higher power. Drew is a ‘blessing’ to the world and to RUclips. The way he explains his thoughts and the kindness and sensitivity he shows is so needed in this type of discourse. We as a human race are in dire need of understanding and recognizing our tribalistic nature/mindsets. I believe the ability to recognize and curtail tribalism is so needed to promote peace and cooperation.

I took a similar path where after I left Christianity I still imagined that I was a follower of Jesus. If I fell short of his teachings in, say, the Sermon on the Mount, that was my shortcoming. But I came to realize that I have no intention of following some of those teachings and I wouldn't recommend them to others. I actually find morally objectionable the commandment to forgive others or else be condemned. It could be psychologically beneficial to, over time, come to peace with someone who has harmed you. But no one owes their abuser anything.

These moral values existed before this person calling himself the son of god was ever known .. and they exist in other cultures and religions. Why must we “ follow “ anyone or thing ? It feels like Drew needs something or someone to follow . This may be because of how he was raised . He needs an authority figure to follow to feel secure or reassured that his morality is valid. It was this way with me too. Except it was because I lost my sister , the authoritarian in the family . Who says that forgiving someone is something that you owe them?
Forgiving someone actually benefits you more than the person that you are forgiving because it allows you to let the past go so you can move on without that person even being in your life.
I know by example because I have forgiven my mother for saying that she hated me and wished I was never born and neglecting me as a child even though she has never admitted that she has even done such a thing in the first place despite having witnesses to the contrary and while me and me mother rarely interact with each other I am now able to move on without her in my life due to forgiving her despite her never admitting to doing such a thing.

I was born into the socially progressive, extremely self-aware denomination of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, and was a very active member my entire life. Because I was encouraged to explore and question my faith, I eventually drew the exact same conclusions as you. 1) Jesus was very, very wrong on certain things that can't be glossed over, and therefore 2) subscribing to a religion whose adherence to those incorrect assertions is a huge cause of the tribalism that is plaguing America simply doesn't make sense. So even though I loved the community that church provides, I left because staying would have required me to betray my own moral, ethical, and spiritual convictions.

I've been a Christian since I was 5, but I've only followed Jesus since the end of high school. I think the problem is most people who say they are Christians only follow the traditions to try and appear good, or to try and make themselves right with God. The problem is on the inside they are bitter, unforgiving people who are really just overt narcissists and dont care to put what Jesus or the rest of the bible says into practice in their own lives. Me and my best friend agree that the biggest problem with the religion is that it is mainstream.
Aside from that, I've noticed that Buddhism teaches many things that parallel what the bible actually says. I fully believe that if the world and everything in it were made by God, then we would be able to discover His nature by observing it, which I think Budhdism has done in part.

@@lizicadumitru9683 Christianity is ultimately about the Gospel, which teaches to be good out of love and not obligation. In fact, many passages say that doing good deeds either out of peer pressure or to appear holy is wrong.
Think of it like a relationship. If you love somebody and they ask you to do something, you're probably going to try and do it, assuming it doesn't harm you. God, who I believe made us and knows what is best for us, has asked us to live in a way that is best for us. If I were to sum up the entire bible in a few verses, it wouldn't be the scattered "Roman Road" or anything else that picks random verses, it would be 1 Corinthians 13, which is focused on love and right intentions

It is inevitable that bad people exist, but when bad people are part of a mainstream religion, an believe that they can manipulate that religion to defend their actions (Spanish inquisition or the Holocaust), religion goes from being about a way to improve yourselves to a method of justifying evil and cruelty towards others as they don’t meet what you interpret your religion specifies as “good people.”

Interesting discussion. But I disagree with the part about Buddhism implying there's a presence of a God. True buddhists certainly don't believe this. Though they do believe there's a cosmic universe of which everything we know of and experience runs on and obeys, but that it's certainly not created by a supreme being like God or is even self-aware. It's just there. Pure buddhists are also realists. They accept that life, sickness, old age and death are constants. Nobody escapes these. Life and death are the opposite sides of the same coin, or are pairs of opposite joint together and inseparable. Strict buddhists also don't believe in heaven, hell, or god or anything that hinges on the idea of an afterlife. However, diluted forms of buddhism still teach this to appeal to those humans who cannot accept the true teachings of the buddha. It is like sugarcoating it to make it more palatable. Stuff like paradise, hell, reincarnation etc. None of this is real. And Buddha is not God. He is just an enlightened person who has understood these ultimate truths. It is futile to hang onto any idea, person, object or anything worldly when your very physical existence will end one day. Therefore, learn to live a humble and simple life. Manage your expectations. That way, you can truly achieve the ultimate happiness in life. At the end, what matters is how have you lived? Are you constantly striving for something? Wealth, fame, reputation or whatever. Were you happy?

I'm often asked "Why are you so interested in Christianity and the Bible if I don't believe it's true, aren't you just wasting your time?" I don't see it as a waste of time. I love my Christian friends and family and even if I don't believe like I used to, I still believe conversations about it are productive, especially if coming from a perspective of someone who isn't committed to a statement of faith or the walls of doctrine. I can ask, "What does it actually say? What does it actually mean?" instead of "What does it say in light of my prior beliefs? What does this have to mean given the doctrines I know are true?" I don't call myself a Christian or follower of Jesus, the terms have too much baggage in my opinion to be useful to me. I do think that engaging with the books, talks, experiences, and arguments that led to my belief in Christianity have been enormously helpful in dealing with life after leaving the faith. *Let's be real here:* The all words _purported_ to have been spoken by Jesus have no reasonable basis as actually coming from the man himself.
For instance, if you read the Nag Hammadi Gnostic texts, you will get a bunch of very different sayings, also _purportedly_ spoken by Jesus, but with no better claim to be his _actual_ words than the four canonical gospels.
People 2,000 years ago, plus in all the time since then, have been putting words in Jesus' mouth. But we really have no idea what the man himself actually said and actually thought. He was probably just some normal, regular Jewish dude that Pilate decided to kill as a warning to other Jews.

A fair point, but whether there was a real person who said specific things or whether the same words are put in the mouth of a fictional character doesn't matter for the kind of consideration this video expresses. I assumed Drew was referring to the teachings traditionally attributed to the character Jesus (and simply not going into a lengthy tangent to explain so), rather than that he assumed it's necessarily accurate to what a hypothetical historical Yeshua may have said. Even if it were somehow proven that Jesus never existed as anything but a literary character it wouldn't affect the morals depicted, which by my understanding is Drew's topic in this video.

Well! For starters, the Gnostics were more than likely doing shrooms and seeing what they thought were saints, and receiving stories from them. This is why the Gnostic texts are so f*cking weird and don't make a whole lot of sense and are considered whacky by anyone whose read them... unless you've done shrooms, and then you understand them, but they're still absurd.
After this, you've got the Talmud, which is the best source to complement the Bible, and very serious proof for the existence of Jesus. The jews at that time wrote down the existence of Jesus as pure fact, and the Talmud was oral tradition and pretty current during that time, so it wasn't some distant, tertiary text, and arguably not even a secondary source.
The Talmud says that Jesus did all the things purported in the Bible, but the jews explain it away as being "magic", and no, not the magic you and I think of, but heretical dark arts of a very specific kind for that day and age. So even the jews that existed at the time of Jesus believe he was real, despite not following him, but for whatever reason, this is always glossed over in spite of what an important source it is.

One thing I think about when considering the idea of liberal, non-fundamentalist religion (or non-religion) is the balancing of the pull of tribalism and universalism. Universalism has all the advantages you mentioned, but there is the risk of losing unique cultures in the process. Actually, Christianity could be used as an example of how various unique cultures throughout history vanished when people were "universalized" to become Christian in the first place. The danger with universalism is that everyone becomes homogenized to be the same, and the danger of tribalism is that it can lead to a demonization of anybody different. So maybe a goal could be finding a healthy balance between respecting unique traditions (at least the aspects of traditions worthy of preservation) while being open and accepting of traditions outside of one's own. It seems like Drew is investigating that balance with compassion and charity.

Think about how the stories of the “Bible God” look exactly like all other myths historically speaking (search for historical origin of the Abraamic God). And then, simply think about the possibility of this specific belief being the right one when all others have the exact same amount of evidence (which is none btw). 2) it gives me more of a connection to self-identified Christians in terms of discourse and gives my persuasion/voice extra weight with them.
    3) it reassures many of my non-Christian friends who have often been hurt, marginalized, bullied, or attacked by Christians in the past-not that they shouldn’t be wary of loudly Christian people (they should, as am I, and I tell them so) but because it gives them some hope they Christianity isn’t necessarily a monolith as an obstacle. “I’m perfectly content to love Jesus because I appreciate his morals, rather than following his morals because I first loved Jesus.”
I love this quote. Personally I wouldn’t call myself a Christian in the terms I’m sure the world would know it as. I’m more of a spiritual Christian than I am religious, and I do not subscribe to any denomination. As I grew up in the church, I also noticed the almost tribal-like tendencies of my church, and churches around. Often times even church against church was common, and so I stepped back from it. So while I wouldn’t call myself a non-believing Christian, I would more so call myself non-conforming to the usual Christian ideals.
I say this mainly due to my two major beliefs. 1: The Bible was, in the end, written by man and due to man’s free will there is nothing stopping him from putting in what he wanted (evidenced by some of the apocryphal texts) and 2: You cannot simply read the book and follow the church to call yourself a Christian. Many Christians, from my personal experience, often say they are Christian because they read the Bible and attend church daily, and then go and judge and be evil towards others.
Thank you for the video, it was interesting and I enjoyed it. It’s given me some things to reflect on, and I look forward to more videos! God bless and have a great day.

Of all the teachings that are attributed to Jesus, many of which are admirable, the ones I find most troubling are the ones where he demonizes mere thoughts, even if those thoughts never lead to transgressions against others. He categorizes the mere human tendencies to hate or lust - emotions that we all have and have very little control over, but which most of us seldom act on - as equivalent to murder and adultery, respectively. Examples: "Anyone who hates a brother or sister is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life residing in him." (1 John 3:15) " But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart" (Matthew 5:28). Can anyone honestly say they have never had these thoughts? Just the mere act of lusting after a woman is something that any healthy man will do, and he has very little control over it. It happens in our dreams, when we are asleep. As the late Christopher Hitchens argued so eloquently, the very notion of a thought crime is the essence of a totalitarian mindset. Any just formulation of morality should not be one that is designed to GUARANTEE failure of those who try to adhere to it. It would be tantamount to the US judicial system criminalizing the mere sensation of hunger.

After many years of being atheist and anti-religious, I joined a religion - but an atheist one; Buddhism. After being hostile to Jesus for many years, when I converted to Buddhism I felt I had an insight into Jesus - that his central message was one of love, and I was happy to include him into my pantheon of spiritual heroes as preaching such a message. So for me he became a Boddhisattva - a being who sacrifices themselves for the good of the rest of the world. The only way I can view the 'end is coming' message, was an a 'skilful teaching' ; a way to guide those who were ready to become enlightened, and shed their former life. But this message has been very unfortunately misunderstood and misused.

I've been an agnostic, tending more towards atheism, most of my life. I've watched your videos in the past and I enjoy them a lot.
About 3 weeks ago, I came across an article in Missouri Medicine, a peer-reviewed medical journal, titled, "Near-Death Experiences Evidence for Their Reality". The findings were, I thought, quite compelling. I have since gone on to read a number of near death experience stories, watched videos of people who have had them. The things that make it all so compelling for me are: 1> The experiences appear to be pretty consistent across cultures(*) 2> The fact that 95% of the people who had them are convinced that they were real experiences and not dreams. 3> The fact that 20% felt that they experienced a normal level of alertness during the experience, but that 75% of them were more conscious and alert than normal during the experience. Some describing it as like waking from a dream, with this reality being the dream.
I started reading some of the stories and in the second story I read, the person was describing the afterlife and for the briefest of instances and image and a feeling popped into my head. It lasted for less than a second. It didn't feel like a vision, but like a memory. A memory from before I was born. It was overwhelming. I've been unable to shake it. And over the past few weeks, I've become a believer. I'm developing a personal theology out of it that makes sense to me, based on these stories I've read and seen. (* this is the part that explains #1 above, the consistency across culture) It's a theology that agrees with a lot of aspects of Christianity. For example, I see Christ as like a personification of God. A face of it/him. I think Christians see Christ when they die, whereas a Muslim will see God (Allah). I think it's the same being and that's not incompatible with Christianity's holy trinity. They're just different perceptions or interpretations of the same God.
I deviate a lot from Christianity. I don't believe in hell, other than one we might make for ourselves. I believe we're all saved. And I think reincarnation is part of it. So it's a mishmash of stuff. And I don't know that ANY of it is right. But it feels right to me and it's helping me make sense of the world and why we suffer and what the purpose is (to grow our soul and to love). I think we come here to face our fears and grow our soul and to spread love and that we come back and try to do better.
I'm not trying to convert anyone (doesn't matter. We're all saved.) But I'd certainly curious about your take on the article. I'm a science guy and so a peer-reviewed article carries more weight for me than a book written 2000 years ago. I believe the bible is "divinely inspired", but it was written by men who, if and however divinely inspired, were also flawed. It was assembled by men who, if and however divinely inspired were also flawed and thus the bible MUST be flawed. (On top of which, you simply cannot literally interpret something that's been translated from another language, especially when people can't agree on what some of the key words mean. It's nonsensical.) I think different cultures have pieced this together, maybe from people having near death experiences, and then created religions, interpreting things as best they could. Different religions got different aspects right and they all got a lot wrong. And that's kind of what I'm doing for myself here, so I probably have a lot wrong. But like I said, it works for me. It's making sense out of life for me and it's helping me work on a lot of my own failings and become a better person.

I am an athiest. I've sung for many years in a church choir and enjoyed the liturgical music because singing makes my whole being sing. I think of that as a health practice. I have a code of values that I try to adhere to, much like you. There are many great teachers who have been in the world and are now in the world that talk about what it means to be an ethical human, including the Jesus writings... well, some of them. What you've said here has resonated with me in such a way that it makes me wonder. Professor Alice Roberts, the humanist paleo-anatomist, has done a number of videos with other humanists talking about the inherent ethical practices that humans carry. This view is one that I am currently wrestling with because on the one hand I believe it wholly. I've seen the evidence in tiny orphaned children, barely verbal who've not had time enough on this earth to even acknowledge the world of rules, take food and clearly distribute it together - fairly - amongst their fellows, making sure that each little one has what they need and even giving up their share so that one more needy can eat. If that isn't altruistic and kind, I don't know what is. You've hit the nail on the head for me, as you always do. Thank you.

6:10 I don't believe Jesus' teachings do support retributive justice. Forgiveness is one of the key themes of the New Testament, and Jesus teaches that we should forgive 'not seven times, but seventy seven times'. The parable of the unforgiving servant suggests that, if we want to be forgiven by God, we should forgive other people. The parable of the prodigal son suggests that we should rejoice if someone is repentant after sinning. According to the Gospel of John, Jesus famously says 'he who is without sin cast the first stone' which seems to directly condemn capital punishment to some extent. Even if you believe this is a later addition to the Bible, lines like 'Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy' heavily imply that we should aim for rehabilitation over retributive justice.

So I have enormous respect for anyone like you who has the courage to stay true to their humanity and conscience.
FWIW I sometimes think that much of theology and apologetics are word games with us all attempting to talk about things we simply cannot (and may not ever) be able to fathom due to the limits of our intellect. What is more obviously true is that the idea of a God is often used "as an excuse for all kinds of goofs and for crimes of all kinds" as Robin Williamson once wrote. Additionally, if you had a loved one who was doing something against the law, wouldn't the most loving thing be to turn them in and prevent them from doing more wrong? I don't believe Fear of the Lord means being afraid of punishment when you make a mistake. God has mercy and grace for that. But God is also the God of justice. So to me, we should fear Him/respect His law because He doesn't just love us, He loves the people we hurt as well. So if we come to Him and repent and work to make amends as best we can, He has mercy. But we have to choose it.

people don't harm other people willfully? What about all the pedophiles or serial killers? Were they forced to do those things because they were in need?
Doesn't really make sense to me. If you think that murderers should not be punished severely ask the families of those whom that person has murdered and see how they will react.

Your comment about narratives really resonated with me! Having a similar background to you (raised in Christian fundamentalism), I started hearing ideas that made me question Christianity, and eventually realize I didn't believe what I was raised with in a literal sense. But for years, I tried to make the new beliefs fit Christianity, exactly like you said, so that I wouldn't be rejected and so I wouldn't cause suffering (it's a big deal when people close to you think you've chosen to literally go to hell).
I actually do think there's a potential step beyond this: most religions have common elements, they're trying to do similar things. This was explained to me once as the 'spiritual path.' The idea that humans psychologically seem to have a human nature/sin nature/ego, and an aspirational nature (the atman, the 'new creature', the 'realized self'). Many of us innately want to change the former into the latter, to ascend to a higher plane of being, be better people. Religions are frameworks that allow us to do this. So as we learn how to progress along our own spiritual path, we can sometimes conflate that with fitting in to our religion, whether it seems an outlandish interpretation or not.

Growing up Christian made me see that I valued things like compassion and respect. But the ironic thing is when I realized that the church was becoming an impediment to the full potential of those values.
Honestly, I love the aesthetic, the sense of community. I'd like to interact with the church on my own terms, but the social forces and the lack of personal boundaries makes it incredibly difficult.

Your comment is great, I enjoyed reading it!
I was a lifelong atheist until three years ago, when I had a bizarre religious experience I could not satisfactorily explain to myself. I'm not a Christian and never will be, but I can no longer deny God. Which is really unsettling!
I too have come to think that for many humans, a spiritual journey is necessary. But it should be a solitary one, otherwise it's just the journey of someone else, and so the meaning is lost. It's scary, confusing, and weird, but so rewarding. Read holy texts yourself. Examine the evidence, including your own life experiences. Seek many viewpoints, but sit quietly alone with them, and let your inner voice guide you as you navigate, dissect, and digest them. In fact, that inner voice is what you are supposed to develop. YOU, as in, every human. You are meant to listen to your Godhead, but you have to shut up to hear it! Silence is hard to come by, eh?
I've come to think that once we activate our Godhead and start on this path, which us what happened to me three years ago, we then get the proverbial devil and angel on our shoulders--and it's crucial to have two, not just one. Listen to each, then find your middle path. Listen to your friends AND foes, your fans AND haters, the in group AND the outgroup. You cannot get a complete view if you willfully cover one eye, now can you?
And isn't finding the middle the point? Earth is fixed between heavens and hells in many traditions and myths, it's literally the neutral third space. We aren't meant for extremes--for they do not exist. A little bad is always nestled in the good, and a little good in the bad.
It is really difficult to divorce ourselves from the narratives we are raised in. Once you see one narrative, though, you begin seeing others. Then, the cracks of reality grow as you realize it is all narrative, until finally it all shatters, leaving you to fall or soar. Once you wake and realize you choose the direction, you ascend to the God role. Mind carefully your conception of God!

Being cautious is something that we can do because we are attempting to remain balanced, or it can be something we are doing because we realize that we are in the context of other people who are not balanced. So I totally appreciate your sense of caution.
I was not raised as a Christian. Although my family attended church, the church we attended didn’t really talk about God. Church was more of a community of wealthy Episcopalians. Church was simply something that we did. But when I became a devout believer it was because of my encounter with fundamentalists. I was 18 at the time and I ended up going to a fundamentalist college. My upbringing however was emotionally abusive and in a manner that I later realized fit in well with the abuses and manipulations of a cultic religion.
One day I fell into a deep vision. It was so deep it was like a near death experience. In that vision I “met God“. I was in deep pain, radically dysfunctional, deeply troubled with what my sin was doing to myself and others, and I felt like someone God ought to hate and I hated myself. But in this vision I met a God who seem to be fully aware of my issues and problems but this had absolutely nothing to do with whether or not I was loved and accepted. These were simply circumstances in my personal history of my human development. Basically, God had no problem with and no issues with the person I was struggling to be. Sin was not an issue on God’s mind. Coming out of that vision, which lasted almost an hour, I no longer had the ability to loath myself. I felt everyone was who they are for reasons not easily understood, but could become more optimally healthy if they were no longer burdened with questioning their lovability.
Over time, this vision destroyed my religion. I have no idea what was real or what was self induced in that vision. I don’t really know and I don’t really care, but I am very happy with the impact it had on me. So it leaves me with a belief in God that has no theology. Is God the creator? How the hell would I know and why should I even care? Is God Omni anything? Those terms strike me as superlative nonsense. If there is a God I have no idea what that actually means nor do I feel any need to have it mean anything of any certainty. Maybe this thing that I think of as God is nothing other than some form of universal consciousness that can’t do a damn thing about anything.
So how do I explain where this leaves me? I can’t. I don’t feel any need to. Where I find myself and as I talk about it is nothing other than simply an admission that this is where I find myself, but it does not include any insistence that my understanding is by any means accurate.

Sorry for responding to an old comment, but I do believe visions like these are valid. My brother was an atheist (though our parents are loose christians) but he told me he had an experience and that made him believe in God. Not in any particular religion, but that God is real. He said it's something that just has to happen to you for you to get it. I don't know how these things happen but it's good that you had a vision and it helped you break away from the abusers

I’m not a Christian anymore(I was raised Catholic) but I recently found faith again. I’m not Christian but I still believe there’s a higher power and afterlife. I’ve had first hand experience and unexplainable proof that there’s a God and afterlife but I’m not going to get into that because most people won’t believe me anyway and I think people need to experience it themselves to believe. Anyway I started reading the Bible again and I think everyone should because it’s a good book and has lessons to be learned whether you’re Christian or not. Even with the lessons and wisdom aside, it’s a very interesting read and should not be brushed aside.

I was still “Christian” for a while because I wasn’t ready to let go of that label till I was sure. Now I still cherish some teachings and stories too. I also like some sci-fi and think some have great morals-but I don’t see any need to tie part of my identity to those.
Those stories are cherished-but still just stories to me now.
I think when you like somebody you want to share commonalities with them and see them as similar to you. I know my Christian friends are more comfortable thinking of me as Christian and get a little uncomfortable when they realize I’m not anymore-even though I still treat them the same and act the same day to day.

As a Christian I totally agree with your take. I think the “Jesus was a good moral teacher” belief is really problematic and I would even say is counter to what Jesus actually taught. If you base who Jesus was off the gospels found in the Bible (which I think is fair regardless of beliefs) then Jesus was either a Con Man, a Mad Man, or the God Man. If you don’t believe in God that leaves two options, neither of which are any reason to call yourself Christian.

@@Israel_Girmay Maxim never said that he himself doesn't believe in God or that Jesus was God.
His point is that there are really only 3 legitimate ways to interpret Jesus' motive behind his teachings. He was either trying to deceive everyone for some kind of personal profit (not necessarily monetary), he was self-deceived (or a madman, if you will, though not necessarily completely crazy), or, as all Christians believe, he was exactly who he claimed to be which is God the Son incarnated as a man to achieve salvation for all men and women.
Since Skep clearly doesn't believe in the existence of God, let alone that Jesus was divine, that only leaves him with the other 2 options, neither of which would allow him to respect of follow Jesus as a "good moral teacher".
To put it another way, Jesus is only a good moral teacher IF he was telling the truth (AKA he was and is God). If he wasn't telling the truth (AKA he was not God), then he is not a "good moral teacher", since he claimed direct divine authority (as God himself in human form) to make such moral claims and judgements, none of which should be trusted if his claim to divinity was false.

He calls on viewers to think critically of their beliefs and to be thoughtful of others. Imo, most ppl want a quick high from social media; they're not wanting to actually have to think about or analyze what they've seen and what they believe. They're not really interested in growing and changing. Drew's subscription audience reflects the number of ppl that are thoughtful, critical thinkers and not addicts of the "snark" high.

I was raised in a Methodist household...in Utah. Everywhere I looked, followers of Jesus (Methodist, Mormon, and more) regularly expressed self-righteous, Us-Against-Them thinking. Moreover, in every different church I visited, people _recited_ the words and phrases they'd been conditioned to use when discussing their faith, rather than expressing _their own_ thoughts in _their own_ words. The pretense and arrogance eventually drove me away from religion altogether. Later, my love of learning filled enough knowledge gaps that I no longer even needed even the possibility of supernatural things as a place holder. Once I was free of that, I also came to realize that even Jesus' _best_ philosophical teachings...aren't particularly original or unique.

Having been raised in the church, I feel a bond with and sense of duty to that community. If something needs to be said, it gets more of a hearing from within than if it came from an outsider.
Knowing the idioms and respecting the culture can open doors instead of closing them.
I also get benefits of mutual aid, a precious dynamic in the larger context of a very atomized society. The church is basically an extended family. Even the human touch of a hug (from those who are huggers) is something that adds to my life.

I like your cautious approach of not applying labels and I think it is reasonable and keeps you honest as a person. It’s effortless to apply a label and hide behind it when your behavior is incongruous with your values. It softens the cognitive dissonance.
It reminds me of the prologue to Leaves of Grass:
“Re-examine all you have been told in school or church or in any book, dismiss whatever insults your own soul, and your very flesh shall be a great poem.”
This perspective on identity is complex, but it seems spot on for anyone who uses skepticism as a tool for their well being and value judgments.
