Great job Stella. I admire you for taking care of the pup. It’s amazing how a feel-good story can be highjacked by the haters. If I lost my dog I would hope and pray he would be found by someone like you.
I hope the owner is thanking Stella for keeping his dog safe! Her heart was in the right place and the fact that she cared for this dog should be commended!!! You are awesome Stella!!! Stay safe and continue to enjoy your journey 🏕🪵🥾🥾. I love following you on this amazing journey!! Stay well😊
I would guess that, he suggested she looked and acted like his daughter so surely there's some empathy there.(That is, it sounded very empathetic) Hope the daughter is doing well. Honestly, Stella would have been entirely in her rights to meet the car and leave the dog. Then it would have been Robert's problem to find his dog now 20 miles away, so paradoxically this was the better outcome, someone with several thousand views has a better chance of a connection being made and most definitely her heart was in the right place, although it might not be advisable to put a voice to one's inner debate ;^)
I personally want to say you did absolutely the right thing by this dog and handled the whole situation so well. I love that the owner has been found and that you made a friend on the trail. I for one will be sending you a little trail majic over the weekend $. Love your journey and your positivity, attitude and smile. Hike on Stella
Stella is great. I'm an old ex hiker and I'm following the many AT thru hikers, she is one of the best. I've had my own dogs continuously through 50 years, shelter volunteer and fostered dogs, and I can say that I still have a lot to learn about dogs. Sometimes good dogs are separated from their good family, it happens more than you would think. If the finder and the owner call in to report the lost dog (police veterinarian shelter) they are usually put in touch with local County animal control who will facilitate the return. It's not a big deal even if there is no tag or microchip, they usually do a good job getting the dog back to where he belongs. And please don't automatically blame the owner, there's more than 50 ways to lose your doggy. It's ironic but a well cared for lost dog is more likely to attach to the nearest friendly human. Also, when Stella had taken Max to a vet and tells how she acquired him and what her plans were. They probably would nicely tell her just one of the many reasons why there is no reason to keep a lost dog, and see that Max is returned to his owner. Lastly, for anyone considering owning a dog, please visit a shelter. They won't let you take one right away, most shelters will give you a brochure, ask you to read it and fill out a questionnaire, and come back another day. They might offer to match a dog to your personality, lifestyle and budget, because sometimes dogs are returned to the shelter, just didn't work out like the owner had thought. Please know everything I've said is based on my local experience and might be different to where you live. .. Now, back to the hiking.
❤my heart goes out to Stella, the dog, and the owner. No shame. No blame. Peace, good health, and safety for all. Stella I can only imagine that reading some of these posts are hurtful but, I for one, believe your heart was in the right place. Also, I imagine making the decision to leave the dog at the shelter was one of the hardest decisions you’ve ever had to make. Again, I do not know the full story but will not cast blame or shame. Peace to you all.
I do hold the owner as negligent. He did not keep his dog under control. The dog was roaming loose with no ID, not even a rabies tag. He isn't neutered, has conjunctivitis in his right eye, ear infection, and this is BEFORE vet check. This is negligence, puts the dog in danger, and puts everyone that runs into him in an awkward position. I hope that the owner will be dealt with for negligence. "Running deer", no, that's not ok. Look at what happened.
Wow, some of the comments are pure whackadoo. The person who's at fault here is 100% the owner who couldn't be bothered to spend the few bucks to put an ID on a dog that is allowed to roam leash free in the mountains. I hope Stella doesn't allow the haters to tarnish her experience of hiking with this dog. Maybe she was always meant to be a dog owner and having this experience was fate.
You've done amazing taking care of this dog. Based on comments, I guess the original owner will be getting their dog back. You took good care of this dog. All of your intentions came from your beautiful heart. The moment that the dog was gone for a while must have been scary for you. I hope you are not too sad about not having him with you anymore. Keep trekking. 😀
That beautiful dog went back to his owner, but this experience--the two of you together on trail-- will be an important and meaningful chapter of your AT journey. You were brought together to share those miles when you needed each other. The trail provided you a wonderful and big-hearted companion.
I follow 4 or 5 hikers every year, you being one of them. Since you adopted Talli I look forward to your video the most. The way you interact with him is precious. Thanks for letting us tag along.
I truly hope you get a dog in the future! The connection you made with Tally was genuine! I have a dachshund, jack russel, chihuahua mix and we hike and camp all the time! she loves it! She's 18 LBS and has zero issues climbing up 4000+ foot peaks! Rock scrambles and all! Then comes home and still runs and plays!
I have a Bishonpoo. 7 lbs in case of accident, issue could carry her to help. Don't need to carry as much dog food as would for a larger dog, but she does not carry her own pack due to size. Doesn't need as much water as a larger dog. She is able to hike all day with no issues. Feet or other. Wonderful on trail companion. Stella, you can learn about the weight a dog with a hiking pack can carry compared to their weight if you choose to get another hiking companion.
Stella I’m so glad you found Tally/Maxs owner You are a beautiful human being with heart full of love and compassion! Time to carry on with your journey young lady. Forever onward!
People in these comments are crazy! Stella, great job taking care of the dog. Glad to hear that he will be reunited his owners. Everyone needs to calm down.
Awww, it made me so sad to see you worried Tally had run off, while at the same time it made me happy that you had become so attached already. It doesn't take long when the match is right!
Oh my gosh. You went from not liking dogs to loving him and watching over him in a 24 hour span. I almost fast forwarded your video to see if he came back to you. I can’t wait to see the remainder of your hike with your new found friend
My dog used to howl like that when I started grad school, and was away from the house all day. My girlfriend has videos of him, standing on the porch, sounding just like that dog. I bet he just misses his owner and people. What a fun adventure, though!! Nice work Stella! Really envious of (and inspired by) your through hike!! With a good doggy backpack, that pup could carry enough food for itself for days:)
For everyone here that doesn't know. Hounds are prone to ear infections, you can clean it with water and vinegar. The trick is to flip over their ears while they sleep to let the ear breathe and air out. And his howling doesn't sound like his ear, it sounds like he is missing his family, which would be the reason he is eager to go out and search for them. I had a hound for 12 years and remember that they follow their nose but they also follow their hearts, they love the family.
I had a couple of Golden retrievers and they had the same issue with their ears. You have to keep the fur trimmed and ears clean. This hound seems to very dedicated to Stella.
I’m really glad you met Odie. We’ve known him a long time! I’m really glad you didn’t get stuck with the sweet little puppy, too! But it was a great adventure while it lasted…and now you have a great story to tell. Odometer and Gutsy
So glad it worked out this way - before you got way too attached. A through hike is hard enough. Imagine what you would've been up against with Talli when you hit the Whites...and then the equally rugged mountains of Maine. Would not have been feasible or practical. You took care of him so well - and - you are definitely no longer allergic to dogs!
True that. I've section hiked the Mahoosuc Notch twice; once with a dog. Good thing there were 3 of us on the dog trip to pass him along. I think it took us 4 or 5 hours to do that mile.
Odie should make the story of Stella and Tali the feature story in the 2023 Hiker Yearbook!! Stella, the world needs more sweet souls like you. Hope you can make it back to Damascus for Trail Days, I would love to say Hi in person!
Yes Stella you rock. It’s hard to know what you would do in any given situation. You did the best you could have done for Tally. Story has a good ending. I feel you lost a friend and should Pursue owning a dog, you would make a fantastic owner. Always positive interactions. I am looking for the beat breed dog for trail myself a lot of people have told me boarder collies are good. I so enjoy seeing you out on trail. I have not made a comment yet but always thought Stella Smiles would be a good trail name. You have a very smiley demeanor always looking to the bright side mostly. Buen Camino
@@cumberlandquiltchic1 Why are you replying to my post when I said nothing about the dog? You're making some assumptions that unless you personally know what's going on is inappropriate.
So sorry that Tali wasn't meant to be your pet, but I hope a seed was planted for the future. Dogs are amazing companions--no wonder that people who have dogs live longer. Make plans Stella, you have the heart of an amazing dog owner. Loving your journey!
The dog is currently at a local shelter. Since her post are several days behind from “real time”. Since the dog is not a service dog and cannot be in Baxter, hopefully she is keeping him there to give the owners a chance to locate him and if he is still there by the time she completes the AT she will adopt him. Fingers crossed!!
Posted 5 days ago: this dog is at the Rescue Dog and End of Life Sanctuary in Mountain City, TN. Hope this gives the owner more information if he has not already been reunited with Max.
She said he's the dog max is at Rescue dog and end of life sanctuary mountain city Tennessee ❤ now the owner can go pick him up and maybe put a dog tag with contact info on him.
Glad things are working out for the dog. Bottom line, dog owners need to keep their dogs on their property. As someone who lives in the country I see people all the time just letting their dogs run free. Never have understood that mentality.
Tally has been accessorized. If the police or vet can't find a chip and you keep him, get him chipped because this won't be the last time Tally hikes his own hike and takes up with another hiker. I had a friend whose teenage neighbor would go for walks in the woods and the friend's dog would often tag along. Soon the dog spent all his time at the neighbor's house and my friend eventually let the boy just keep the dog.
He is a good dog you need to get in touch with pink hot dog he got a great RUclips channel he is on the Appalachian Trail again he is a veterinarian he knows all about animals he's a good guy his RUclips channel is playground earth tv he will help you anyway he can keep on having fun and be safe all my best Ramon
How wonderful of Stella to look after max ( Tali). I hope she doesn't feel too sad about it. I truly believe everything happens for a reason. If you get a dog off trail, now you have a name. Feat forward Stella. The next adventure waits
I'm enjoying this crazy journey!! As an owner or roommate to 2 collies, 4 cats, 5 hens and a rooster google is my saviour. Before I feed human food to anyone I google @ "Can dogs eat....? " and there are always good answers there. On the trail I would feed him when you feed as with dogs that is a real bonding time. NOT During! but right after eating. Pet him and love him before and after food. You're doing great so far. Keep rewards intermittent if you want to train.
It appears Robert B taught him to "heel" which is the walking right next to you. Also on a leash, he would be expected to walk next to you like that without pulling . Nice that you got to "test drive" a nice dog :) He's good like that because someone trained him and raised him to behave like that.
Stella if your reading this you need to change your trail name to sheets! Tally also needs to be kept on a leash or he is going to get lost again and tethered him to you while your sleeping so he doesn’t roam or start tenting so you can look him in with you. Ask the vet for list of foods that dogs shouldn’t eat … grapes, onions, chocolate and many other things.
The ear thing might be yeast growth which happens a lot with floppy eared dogs, witch hazel would work better for cleaning. But probably shouldn’t clean till find out what’s causing the problem for sure from vet.
You were worried like a mom with their baby. Did you see if he had a chip when you first found him? Dogs on trail are a LOT of work. Write your number on his collar.
No chocolate or grapes for dogs. As long as he maintains weight and ribs aren’t showing tally is getting enough food. He might be trying to tree raccoons 🦝? Wow! Your such a dog Mom 😊!
He’s a hunting dog. That’s what they do. He’s also Scent driven. He can find you from miles and miles away. Hopefully you won’t worry so much the next time that happens…because it will 😅
If he’s such a great scent driven hunting dog, wonder why he couldn’t sniff and hunt his way back home to his owners - instead of following Stella for 20 miles?
@@TeeGreen222 Oh, he would have if she’d have left him in the woods. But she didn’t know that. We had a beagle who would catch a scent while hiking, take off for hours, then find her way home. Max could have followed her for 50 miles and still found his way home. He knows all the short-cuts through those woods, guaranteed 👍
I hope that the shelter will demand that the owner gets the dog secure under control, not roaming loose with no ID, not even a rabies tag. They should also make sure that if someone claims to be the owner, that they provide some evidence like a picture or vet history. Stella has done the best possible for this roaming dog under the circumstances. The original owner is negligent and shouldn't be allowed to get the dog back.
I am glad to hear he is not on trail. I wondered what you were going to do with him on the dangerous sections of rock scrambling and feel so sorry for him because it appears he is crying for his people and dog companions. I hope the dog he was hiking with was able to get back home and not lost. After thinking more about it it’s more likely that the two were just tracking something having fun within distance of their home and he got caught up in the trail when he saw you and went too far. I love dogs and have 9. Your heart was in the right place! Hoping it’s a no kill shelter. Was this North Carolina? I think the best thing to do in the future would be to try and contact a trail runner or forest ranger, some type of wildlife officer or the like and try to get them to take the dog and locate the owner before he gets too far away from them. I wasn’t in your shoes. I know you wanted to keep moving and were not expecting the sweet responsibility but you proved even self proclaimed dog “haters” actually just haven’t met the right one! Happy hiking!
Wow, I guess things have changed. I'm sorry for you but happy he found his original family. However, you are truly a dog person and you need to get one when you finish. The book I mentioned is Lost on the Appalachian Trail, where the writer hikes with his dog. It's a good book and you are a good person!
The dog has conjunctivitis in his right eye and an ear infection, possibly more problems with a vet check. He's roaming loose with no ID, not even a rabies tag. If the dog's at a shelter I hope that if an owner shows up with some evidence that they are the owner, some action will be taken about the owner's negligence.😮
I feed my dogs raw meat and some vegetables. But that would be hard to take on a trail. So probably a good brand of grain free dog food would work till you got home.
I wonder how many calories your dog is burning a day, it looks like for every mile you walk he is walking 2 by going off trail and back and forth. Might be something to ask about. Another great video.
Seems a little too convenient that someone who has been following Stella for 3+ weeks on YT is the owner of the dog. I’m glad Tali was a part of your journey and that you ultimately turned him over to a shelter who will hopefully find his owner. He’s a good dog and you’re a good person for watching over him. But on trail just isn’t the place to be a first time dog owner. There are so many things to learn and so much to be careful of, even when you’re just at home, much less on trail.
@S. M. when you click on a comment on one of Stella’s videos, you can see the stats and recent comments from that person on her channel. He was following & commenting prior to the Tally saga, which seems like it could be a safety issue. Sometimes people will see an opportunity to meet/personally contact a YTer in real life and jump on it.
Questions for Rob B: Do you always let your dogs roam free on public lands? Why do your dogs not have tags so nice honest people can return your animals to you promptly and not have to take care of your animals for several days till they can find you? How long has the dog had an ear infection? Why do you think this dog followed this nice lady for 10 miles instead of returning to your home? It very clearly documented she wanted absolutely nothing to do with this dog.
That poor dog followed her for WAY more than 10 miles! YES....questions for this guy claiming to be the dog's owner....does this dog sleep on a nice bed in a warm home at night??? Or is he and others locked in an outdoor kennel even in the frigid winter temps to shiver all night long? I've rescued multiple former 'hunting' dogs and they HATE their former life, that has always been very apparent!!! They HATE the cold and they HATE anything resembling gunshot sound. I hope this dog gets adopted by someone who actually cares...not someone who gets their jollies watching dogs torture small animals so they can then shoot them! IT's SICK and it's NOT a 'sport'.
I wouldn't have been able to leave that dog on the trail either. You did a good thing taking care of him. I'm not sure what you were expected to do when he followed you and the owner was too irresponsible to put a name tag with a phone number on his dog. That would have gotten the dog back to him much faster. There was originally another dog with Tally/Max-was that his too? I feel like the best course of action is to drop the dog off at an animal shelter and let the shelter and owner determine if he really does own the dog. If he does there should be papers and pictures and a vet who can attest to ownership.
He probably went hunting, that's why you heard the barking really far off. He's a hunting dog. Please bring him home, he's probably owned by someone. Keeping my fingers crossed, that you'll find his owners, they probably miss him a lot and now he is really far away from where you met him, he won't be able to find his way home now. It's good, that he makes you happy, maybe someone is really sad that he's gone. I would be if it were my dog. Anyhow, have fun hiking and happy trails!
@@cumberlandquiltchic1 just stop, take a breath and relax. She answered Robert. It will work out, without you insulting her and posting this comment everywhere. She found an animal and she took care of the dog, he was lost an he followed her for a long time. She fed and bathed him, she gave love to the dog hugged him at night, made him safer and she worried for him. Talli was good for her and she has been nothing but good to him, while he was with her. The owner will find a way to get the dog back and Stella will find a way to keep her spirits up and keep on hiking.
10:34, you state you plan to still have him “when I’m done with the trail.” - so you initially just planned on taking the dog. You should have taken action to leave him at your last stopping point.
So caring for a neglected animal out in the middle of nowhere is stealing a dog? At what point is the animal’s owner at fault for letting his animal roam free on public land? I wonder when the dogs owner was going to get that ear infection treated? What dog owner doesn’t spend $1 to put a tag in his collar? All very thought provoking questions. Don’t get snippy with this women, she wanted nothing to do with this dog, it followed her for 10 miles and she out of the goodness of her heart altered her life to take care of someone’s neglected animal… when you make assumptions you make an….
That's pretty dramatic. If you watched the video the dog followed Stella 20 miles before she acknowledged him. She even tried to get him to go the other way with another hiker and his dog. The owner has a hound loose by the AT with no ID tag, not even a rabies tag. I would be looking more at the owner as irresponsible than Stella who has concern for the dog. IF Robert is the owner, easily proven by pictures or dogs response to him. But the owner, whoever they are, is negligent.
@@mountainman.4478 Please post a comment to stop all of this negativity towards Stella. She did not want your dog to start with, she has never really liked dogs. She took on the responsibility to care for him because she saw no other real option while her friends were looking for the owner. While on trail, cell service is spotty at best, and videos are posted for release sometimes days if not a week ahead. Thank you for responding to Stella in a positive manner.
@Robert b hey Robert, glad you found the dog!!! Please let us know when you have him home from the shelter. I'm sure it will warm everyone's hearts, except the haters. Especially Stella's. Us trail folk are different. We believe God, or whatever you call it, provides what we need, not what we want. Watch the video of.hers when your dog's find her to know.what I mean. Your dog brought a change into her heart. It was a blessing to her. Also, the dog I'd beautiful and well behaved, so you don't deserve any flack either. I would add the final caveat that there are also a lot of "do gooders " on trail. So maybe collar either your name and phone number because some of.these people just think they are better than everyone else.
She didn't steal anyone's dog. The dog literally started following her in the middle of the woods. How about we go after the owner of the dog here. They're the one's responsible not Stella. Some of you people are appalling. Always think you know best.
I don't understand how you just take someone dog with you. And now all you talk about is this dog. And reason your alone is your miles you doing. Your not enjoying the trail. Your doing something I wish I could. And your just running through the AT. I hope you slow down and take it all in. Your on the AT. Their nobody around you. Your doing 30 miles day. But now you have a dog slowing you down . I just don't understand. It's not your dog.
Not only is your grasp of English lacking, but so is your understanding of the situation. I have 3 dogs. One of them hikes with me. If he ran off, I'd be so grateful that someone took care of him.

He’s an active dog likes to move it move it! He diffidently took a shine to you. Resting under your legs. Enjoy the day.
The dog is at rescue dog and end of life sanctuary mountain city TN
Spend in Harpers Ferry at the spiritual half way point
Yes Stella you rock. It’s hard to know what you would do in any given situation. You did the best you could have done for Tally. Story has a good ending. I feel you lost a friend and should Pursue owning a dog, you would make a fantastic owner. Always positive interactions. I am looking for the beat breed dog for trail myself a lot of people have told me boarder collies are good. I so enjoy seeing you out on trail. I have not made a comment yet but always thought Stella Smiles would be a good trail name. You have a very smiley demeanor always looking to the bright side mostly. Buen Camino
1.) Hike as many 30’s as you want.
2.) laugh as much as you want.
3.) keep the dog

@@cumberlandquiltchic1 I think it’ll be worked out soon enough Sandra!!
Posted 5 days ago: this dog is at the Rescue Dog and End of Life Sanctuary in Mountain City, TN. Hope this gives the owner more information if he has not already been reunited with Max.
Thank you so much folks. I’m a day behind on reading the comments.
She said he's the dog max is at Rescue dog and end of life sanctuary mountain city Tennessee ❤ now the owner can go pick him up and maybe put a dog tag with contact info on him.
Get dog tags with your phone number on them. Available at most pet stores. All dogs should have them.
One thing you have already learned is….life is better with a dog. I hope you get one one day if Talli is not the one.
So, I want you to get a dog after trail Stella!
Glad things are working out for the dog. Bottom line, dog owners need to keep their dogs on their property. As someone who lives in the country I see people all the time just letting their dogs run free. Never have understood that mentality.
Looks like on the comments they found the owner. Woot woot 🌻🌻
@S. M. that made me laugh 🐢. And you are correct 😄
I’m nixing Nyx. Stella is the Dog Whisperer!
Notice it sits when she say "sit" This a really well trained dog.
He will probably run off from you until you get him neutered. He’s a good boy and he love you! ❤
How would you feel if someone neutered you ???
Would love for you to go live tonight and address the situation with tali
Can someone please.confirm the owner Robert has his sweet dog back?
She has done an amazing job caring for this pup. Thank you.
I suggest you watch Turtle and Pups latest episode.
If you do night hike with him keep the leash on him!
Grapes are the most poisonous thing a dog can eat food wise, no grapes or grape jelly😃👍🏻
@@cumberlandquiltchic1 how many times are you going to post this?
The ear thing might be yeast growth which happens a lot with floppy eared dogs, witch hazel would work better for cleaning. But probably shouldn’t clean till find out what’s causing the problem for sure from vet.
You were worried like a mom with their baby. Did you see if he had a chip when you first found him? Dogs on trail are a LOT of work.
Write your number on his collar.
How does everyone already know what happened with the dog before it's in a video ? Thanks
But where do the people that write the comments get their info ?
If the owner isn’t looking for him than your doing the rite thing. It should say on the dog food bag how much to feed him by his weight .
No chocolate or grapes for dogs. As long as he maintains weight and ribs aren’t showing tally is getting enough food. He might be trying to tree raccoons 🦝? Wow! Your such a dog Mom 😊!
maybe wrap your tyvek around your pad so Tally can't accidently pop it. Just an idea! You two are soooo cute.
He’s a hunting dog. That’s what they do. He’s also Scent driven. He can find you from miles and miles away. Hopefully you won’t worry so much the next time that happens…because it will 😅
@@cumberlandquiltchic1 I'm curious, is it a bear hunter?
@@johnhenderson8360 No, it turns out it was a family dog
@@TheJhtlag thanks
If he’s such a great scent driven hunting dog, wonder why he couldn’t sniff and hunt his way back home to his owners - instead of following Stella for 20 miles?
@@TeeGreen222 Oh, he would have if she’d have left him in the woods. But she didn’t know that. We had a beagle who would catch a scent while hiking, take off for hours, then find her way home. Max could have followed her for 50 miles and still found his way home. He knows all the short-cuts through those woods, guaranteed 👍
Maybe pick up a Kong or chew toy that can occupy him when youre at camp or staying somewhere
try a marrow bone for him. dogs love bones
Oh no! I must have missed the owners came through
Wow, I guess things have changed. I'm sorry for you but happy he found his original family. However, you are truly a dog person and you need to get one when you finish. The book I mentioned is Lost on the Appalachian Trail, where the writer hikes with his dog. It's a good book and you are a good person!
Did I miss something. I watched the whole video and didn't hear her say anything about Tally's owner being found. . What did I miss?
These videos are a week or more delayed. The situation has been resolved. How it was resolved, I'm sure will come out in the upcoming vlogs.
It's a one dog night!
Maybe get the dog a backpack he can carry his own food
If you keep him, you may need to get him a flea collar for the ticks and fleas.
Yikes, I thought as you that Tali was long gone.
omfGAWD ‼️❕⚠️ hello ma'am... lost track of u since CDT *Congratulations
@@mountainman.4478 I’m sorry to hear that
I wouldn't have been able to leave that dog on the trail either.
You should get one of the leashes you tie around your waist that way your hands can be free
Dogs should be on a leash.
Why do u have adog.
10:34, you state you plan to still have him “when I’m done with the trail.” - so you initially just planned on taking the dog.
You should have taken action to leave him at your last stopping point.
She backtracked on the trail and spent half of her day trying to find the owner and trying to figure out how to take care of the dog
You need to do everything to find the owner of this dog. You have no rights to keep this dog. As far as I am concerned you stole his dog.
@Regina Barton You need to catch up on the post before you start delivering your unwanted opinions. Geessshhhh ANOTHER negative Nellie.
I just don’t understand how someone could completely swing & miss on this situation as badly as this commentor.
Not only is your grasp of English lacking, but so is your understanding of the situation. I have 3 dogs. One of them hikes with me. If he ran off, I'd be so grateful that someone took care of him.
