I think it is meant to be the awkward in-between age where you're not quite an adult but no longer a kid (so 16-18, the age they are meant to be), nothing to do with social status. If you watch the show they are clearly lowest social status in the school, not even halfway cool.
@BlunderOfAllBusses they themselves perceive Big John, Suzie et al as being in a lower social group than them, but (with the possible exception of Simon, who does have some minor success with the ladies at school) the rest of the school doesn't really seem to agree. As someone who was actually in the so-called "in-between" social group in school (ie, neither a nerd nor a cool guy, just one of the guys that got on with most people without actually standing out or being especially popular), I can tell you that it certainly doesn't involve being bullied, rejected and humiliated to the extent that the lads are in the show. To me it makes a lot more sense that the title would refer to, as I said originally, the awkward late teenage stage where you want adult things (booze, sex, independence etc) but are still too young, spotty and/or immature to have much success at getting them.
