Your pricing of $2,600 on a "stock" small block rebuild is pretty much spot on for my area too including machine work. New "stock" cam. New pistons too of course.

At 11:50 I would have to say that the crate engine world, while a great alternative for machine shop-lacking parts of the country AND a big help for budgets, has taken away some of the time-honored heritage of what it means to be a hot fodder or a gear head. I have learned so much by disassembly, planning a performance build, listening to my machinist, and checking on specs such as degreeing in the cam, rocker arm geometry, bearing oil clearances, and all the rest. There is a lot of personal fulfillment and enjoyment along the journey - especially when you fire it up and thrash an engine you know you personally assembled, blueprinted, and tuned. Carry on fellas, good show.

Hey there gents, I enjoyed you two reminiscing on how "pedestrian" this build is, and is hasn't even run yet !!! Seriously, it gives a newbie, a decent frame of reference for what they'd in for, going the minor do it yerself route here.. Keep it up boys..

Did basically the same rebuild on a 4.9 , 6 cyl $750. Did hand lap on valves, machine work on crank, rods, had 2 rods that were stretched out of specs, crank resurfaced ,etc. ,etc.

Gentlemen, nice series of videos. I’m looking at tracking down a Fairlane Convertible for my wife and building it for her, nothing to tear up the asphalt but simply to drop the top and enjoy the ride. I’ve been looking for a decent car, a roller, and I’ll build the engine. Long & short being this series has renewed my spirit in that I’ll be able to to what needs to be done on the “new” engine.
Keep up the great work & truly enjoy as learning from yourselves. Jeff, do hope you’ll be feeling better soon. Be safe & keep wrenching…

Whoa. I had a 351C 4V rebuilt in the 80's for $800. Now it would be over three times that? Ouch. I'm still tinkering with the 351C 2V I got with the '73 Mach 1 I bought going on three years ago. Runs good, I do drive it to cruise ins, car shows, etc. and as things go dreams of more HP are dancing in my head. Anyway, my current problem is a harmonic vibration in the motor. It's not terrible, but I notice it. Anyway, I replaced the harmonic balancer on it (which it did need) with no change. U joints seem to be fine. I rev it up anywhere between 3100 and 2800 RPM sittin still and I feel it. Thinking it must be flex plate or torque converter. So I may take it to my transmission guy to check out, since it has an oil leak anyway. Just put in new shocks, and replaced the pitman arm. That was a lot of fun, since it seems those parts came new on the car. Also new tires, turns out the car had been sitting awhile and the tires on it were only 18 years old. 😳Anyway enjoy your show, how about more Cleveland stuff? 😁

I did the I wanna go fast thing when I was young on my 70 Camaro. 2 engines and 2 rebuilds and 3 junkyard transmissions and numerous problems, plus some years and gray hairs later, I figured out more reliable and slower was better for me.

    • @Milner62
      @Milner62 Год назад +2

With tech we have today you can go fast and still be reliable. My engine build for my truck should make around 400 HP but is fully pieced together by me to be a daily driver with the goal of be capable of lasting 200,000 miles before a rebuild. Engine was pricy as hell to piece build but I got what I wanted and custom tailored the build for my truck and it's intended use.

@@Milner62 True, but not the way I drove 35+ years ago, lol. Brake stands and neutral bombs were a near daily occurrence. Surprised I never lost a rear end among the various problems. I got multiple speeding tickets back then too. None since, knock on wood.

Budget builds can be done, many rebuilders sell built long blocks for around $2500 with a multi-year warranty. It is highly doubtful you'll do a budget build for under $1,000 today with the cost of everything going up in price steadily.
The 302 I have on my engine stand for my truck was built from a short block I sourced from out of state to get a F1SE roller block for my foundation. Year and a half later after waiting a year and a half for many parts due to limited stock, the engine is 99% ready to install. Everything but the block, rods, and crank are OE Ford, everything else is new or NOS Ford from the oil pan to thermostat housing, to heads, to cam. That right there has my build sitting at $11,750 as of right now including Holley Sniper 4150 Stealth EFI and ceramic coating my painted Street headers from Jet Hot in their Off-road 2000 coating. Only thing left to do to hit 100% for install is the stainless steel 3/8 hardline for the frame, a 85/86 fuel tank, a 85/86 sending unit, walbro 255 lph in tank fuel pump, flowmaster stainless steel Y pipe, and Cold Case aluminum 2 core radiator.
Everything else I have for the install including a out of production Magnaflow XL 3-chamber 6" round muffler in almost OE dimensions in 2 1/2" off set inlet/outlet.
At the end of the day I could have gone cheaper and been around $3000 when all said and done but I always wanted a nice engine for this truck over the smog 100ish HP 302 and I wanted to make sure the build is fully capable of surviving at least 150,000 miles before a rebuild and I think with proper service out side of failed parts which can always happen I feel this engine build should easily hit 200,000 miles before it needs to be rebuilt.
I personally avoided crate engine as everything away from a stock crate engine is built more towards going in a car. Everyone I seen always had a cam that had a powerband of 2,000-6,500 rpm which is not what I need for my truck. Why I pieces my build together to fit my truck and my intended use. Cam is a crane roller cam with a power band of 1,400 - 5,400 rpm with a cruise range of 2,400 - 3,000 rpm and a 6,000 rpm redline. With my AFR Renegade 165 heads they flow best between 0.500" - 0.550" lift, anything over 0.500" lift is a diminishing return and my roller cam is 0.520"/0.542" lift. With my Performer intake manifold with 1" 4-hole phenolic plastic spacer and 1/4" divided EGR heat isolator gasket and the 870 CFM 4150 sniper stealth my engine with 9.44:1 compression and 0.040" quench I should be in the neighborhood of 400 HP with the capability of running 87 octane regular grade fuel with the ability to use my truck as a truck vs a hotrod build.

The terms-- Budget and FE may not be used in the same conversation. I see crate FE's starting at $13,000! If you want to do a budge Ford Big Block, you really need to go 385 series.

Excellent and complete discussion of the project to date. I want a Maverick very badly and I have poor judgement, but even I wouldn't try to turn that one into a car. It would be hilarious as a run in stand.

I looked around to find someone to do my 350. Just looking for a stock build. When I talk to them I'm hit with you want such and such cam and this and that and another thing. When I say I want a stock build ,I get, sorry sir we can't do that. It's in a 84 GMC short step side that is so lite that if the road is wet can't start it moving without feathering the gas spinning tires. Stomp on it doing 55mph on the wet could easy make an unplanned u turn
Don't need hotrodded . The engine just leaks at every gasket and seal. The engine still running though spitting oil out the head gasket. Yes a basic build has its place, but everyone tells me they make no money on a basic build. I think that's the importance of this. Considering a gasket and seal kit and go.

Ok just an idea as too many people do the used LS thing, a 5.2 (318) or 5.9 (360) magnum engine can be had for as little as $100.00 and not need an overbore just valve job, gaskets and timing set. For the Mopar guys on a budget.
