How do you set your focus? Single focus or continuous? Auto or manual? And where do you usually focus (mom, dad, kid?) to keep wide aperture. Also what metering mode do you use?
enjoyed watching and getting some pointers, couldnt access your free posing guide, after giving name and email, it went to login or signup???? also would have liked to see some fimages after taking them to see what you captured, obviously not all 300+
This is great info. I like how intimate the poses look. I watched the losing session twice, and both times it struck me that the directions sounded negative. “Don’t put your hand around her like that.” And “don’t look at me.” I like to say things like, “the way you did it looks great, now let’s try putting your hand…” so it is positive language rather than negative. “Do” do this rather than “do NOT” do that.
I learned so much from this... thank you so much for sharing. I'm not a photographer but I am learning, however I am a freelance videographer & I love making family & couple videos - especially wedding videos. How you was in control throughout the whole family photoshoot was just amazing. Thank you!
I am a brand new family photographer. Did my first large shoot today. This video helped me so much. My client actually complimented me after the shoot on how I knew just what I wanted and how good I was at directing. Thank you so much for showing me a style I was not aware of. Made my shoot so much easier. As a newly I was not sure I would like this aspect of the job. Now I can hardly wait for my next shoot. Happy New Year.
its kinda the same except they are bigger so you cant pick them up. or squeeze them in between the parents as much. teens are basically like adults but sometimes they might have an attitude and might want to do their own thing
Really helpful video. However, I would have learnt much more if there were more conversation around where to focus, what apertures to use and most importantly the output of the photoshoot done in the session.
Posing in some way yes but I feel the light needs ton of work by either working with the available light and use it in your favor or creating it with strobes, flashes or reflectors.
This week im gonna have my first family shooting as a photographer and i want u to say thank you for this helpful advices ❤ i feel less stressed now and finally have some ideas about posing because for real ppl dont know what to do with their hands and legs 😄 thank u for real ❤
Amazing lecture. So many takeaways, thank you. I also love the fact that you're a minimalist. I always thought the idea was to get away with as less as possible. So, find a pocket of light somewhere, go into some corner and make do with what you have. I am in awe of photographers who use massive setup, but I don't see myself doing it. Also the "lifestyle" type of shoot which is still directed sounds really inspiring. As for insisting on smiles, I feel like it's totally allowed to capture all children emotions, not just smiles (or fake smiles). And it's so smart that you have a contract detailing everything you will do and cannot guarantee that you can do. Also amazing ideas for a select number of locations that you know and understand how to use the most out of. That makes PERFECT sense. I used to shoot birthdays for kids, lot s of running around, minimal time to capture, etc, but I still could manage to get decent portraits of most of the kids, most of the time. However, every once in a while there would be a kid that just will not accept to be photographed. Not even once...every time I approach, the kid covers their face and just won't let me. And then, the father goes: "I guess you're gonna have a hard time with this one". Not really sure the expectation here was realistic or fair, so props for the contract. Sorry about the long comment and keep up the great work, I am following you on IG!
I'm pretty sure your editing company does more than basics colour correction! I have seen pictures in your new born photography course and the editing looks way advanced imoa. Thanks
Thank you for sharing so much great information!! I’m taking photos for a friend next weekend and feel like you’ve given me so much to make the shoot better!!!
But rapid spray and pray? ...against a white background, no strobes, reflectors or even windows, shadows on the backdrop? No positioning for light? Was her ISO 100,000? "Not a light person" but photography is literally about capturing light? Where can we see the photos?
Why didn't you let us see the photos you took? What's the point if we can't see what you photographed? Don't understand the logic. Were you embarrassed with the outcome?
The younger boy was very uncooperative, misbehaved. He should have been disciplined right then and there. I felt the parents Embarrassment. Their attire should have been a little more photogenetic, appropriate for the shoot as well. All of it was off. Did not want to show photos due to all above although she is a good photographer, Lifestyle.
At around 8:24, it is suggested that touching subjects puts them at ease and makes posing directives easier to follow. In light of the social distancing norms in effect around the world, I would love to know if Elena S. Blair has specific tips on how she has modified her family sessions or other types of sessions.
Can i make one remark? The photographer told the kids several times that it was the last picture she would take or olmost done. And then she made like 1000 photo's afterwards. The kids want's to have a timeframe. When you say you are done, then be done, right?
Meh. In this situation, you do what you gotta do! If the kids are able to keep giving more, YOU TAKE IT. 😜 Outside of photoshoots then sure- give kids a timeframe and honor it.
Love it, sooo my style of shooting, love it when other photographers say "i dont use lights or strobes".. Natural light cant be beaten, high ISO and still get beautiful pictures!
@@vulcan2678 I agree with you 100% however after spending 20 plus years as a full time wedding/portrait photographer many buyers do not wish to shop for a pro when they can get good enough results from themselves or a chum.

Her teaching caters to my style of learning. Short, simple to the point. She really did a great job.

She is legit speed shooting families...that is such a skill 👏👏👏
That family they brought in during the Posing Demo was such a wholesome and adorable moment! It made me so happy! ^w^
Me too, I felt emotional... Wth... 👀

Thanks for the lesson. I know this was just on posing, but it would have been better if we could have seen the final results.
All the photos here are of families with little children. what about poses for families with grown up (or teenage) children?
its kinda the same except they are bigger so you cant pick them up. or squeeze them in between the parents as much. teens are basically like adults but sometimes they might have an attitude and might want to do their own thing

Is there anywhere to see the images that Elena captured during the posing demo?
I bet they all got trashed
On her Instagram. Look through the tagged photos. ☺️

You did this so fast wow!
what happens when you need to change the settings?
shoot in A mode
Wondering why the photos of the family were never shown???
it really is something I am thinking too..I really dont have this sort of technique...but its horses for courses and we are all different I guess.
How do you break down and collect which shot to show your client after you took a millions of clicks ... don't get me wrong . i am a learner too ...
weed out the bad ones. then show them the ones u thing are usable.
This is a brilliant video, I am in this part of the industry as well for a year and it is hard without telling people what to do

I’m so inspired by this! I love how Elena just sticks to her guns and style 👏🏻👏🏻
So helpful and great to see her in action and see how she does it with an actual family. Thanks for sharing this! Great job!

Elena, this was a great video. I did not hear anyone ask you where you place your focus point. My apologies if someone did.
I absolutely loved this video. All the rule breaking is right up my street.
For anybody else in the comments searching for the editing company she uses, it's the image salon
What lens did you use for this shoot? What lens would you recommend for a family of 8 using a Canon T7i?
She said she uses the 50mm 1.2L, and i believe that is what she used when she held up the camera.
This is Uber impressive! So helpful from a newbie. Thank you!
Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge Elena. That was awesome
Wow I'm just blown away by her system! 😍😍😍 can't wait to try it!

There are a couple options for the 50mm 1.2L lenses and the prices are so different. Would you be able to reply with the exact one or a link to it?
Wow speed shooting amazing. May I ask what lens are you using for these portraits?
I just tried to download the free posing guide, but it keeps giving me an error. Is there something wrong with the link ? Thanks

no social distancing.....😂
Hi Nathan. It was shot over a year ago. Pre Covid. ;) now I verbally direct and wear a mask. ❤️
