The back story is that the cut had originally been intended to be a shorter take, but Alfred Lion, when he saw the groove the players were, said to let the tape run. Thank you, Alfred.
This was the first take and while they recorded shorter versions, those didn't have the same feel. Rudy Van Gelder was in charge of the tape recorder, btw.
Sonny Clark Grant Green Art Blakey It ain t nessecerily so very very so so beautiful
I remember the first time I was blessed with hearing this tune. I was in the shower and it came on the radio. I was actually singing along, making up my own crazy lyrics, then Joe Henderson came in and i stopped singing and started listening. Then I turned off the water. I stood in the shower with no water on for the rest of the tune. The dj said the name of the song and the group... The rest was history for me. One of my favorite jazz tunes all time. The entire group put their foot in this cut. Joe Henderson's sax run was one of the smoothest I have ever heard on any tune... Period!
Nice comment
@@michaelmorphites6733 I agree ++ ;-).
That VIBRAPHONE, though !!!
Bobby Hutcherson!!! So so proper !!🎹🎹🎹🎹🎹🔥🔥
This is jazz at it's best.
its
It shouldn't bother you if others dislike this tune. Consider yourself blessed to feel the vibe and feel pity for those can't.
Smoother than a dolphins smile
:D
😂
jajwujuajuwjuajuwawa
Esoteric , Ed !
It is definitely smoother than Dolphy
i been listing to rock and metal all my life. Just decided to look up some jazz and Grant Green is amazing.
I am really into jazz and dungeons & dragons. It's not a phase, mom!
I did the sane thing up until 2014. Woke up one day and was like i want to listen to something totally new to ny ears, something to relax to.
He is
Amazing he is.
That was a good choice. Some times it is good to have a little break by listening to music as relaxing as jazz
One of the greatest examples of space and melody in music !!!###
I was listening to this one Sunday morning and it occurred to me that if the piano could play itself this is what it would play.
Brilliant comment
The most original thing i've heard in a good while. Thanks :)
That is genius Glenn.
sweet!!!
Agreed. This is when you let the music come through you as opposed to showing all your piss and vinegar chops. Music is what happens between the notes and when chords change...this is so good!!!
Definitely one of the best jazz tracks of all time.
Joe Henderson at hie best ever
Grant green was one of the best, he's playing mostly blues ideas and nailing the changes here and there, but in a way that's so tasteful, proof that you don't need to be to fancy and harmonic complex all the time.
It's a great album over all as well
Taking this masterpiece with me into 2021 on a cold grey morning in Casablanca 🇲🇦🏝 with ☕💨💨🧿👊🏿🙏🏿.Enrich your soul with each note and smile.
Cheers from Chicago, wishing you well!! Enjoy each day as you enjoy these idle moments...!
@@Thortron007 Thank you and you also!
Anything on this label is of the highest quality. And such great musicians take your soul somewhere else. Impecable.
One of the best guitarist. His sound was beautiful and soulful.
feel it in my soul throughout, especially at 7:44. that's gotta be one of the smoothest entrances I've ever heard
Stopped me right on my tracks
* This music is AMAZING! Where has this been all my life?!!!
I thought what a fantastic Tenor ride, looked and saw it was Joe, so No Wonder! My Man...
Grant is at his best; thank God for Jazzand what can you say about my dear friend Joe Henderson, pure genius.
One of jazz greatest moments! Absolute perfection.
A masterpiece
Thanks a lot for posting this great magnificient music! Greetings from Kharkiv, Ukraine - we love jazz in our city.
I admire your open mindedness...people all over the world seem to love jazz...too bad they don't love it here in the country of its origin...prejudice dies hard...plus lets face the facts americans have it too easy...pathos means nothing to them...the same can be said for art also...they simply can't relate to it...their cartoon mentality doesn't allow for such frivolous nonsense...pass on my best wishes to all of your fellow Ukrainian jazz friends...
hasan ben sober shut the fuck up
we are not in the least surprised that a sheep is your alter ego ... it's perfect... what a stroke of genius...Freud would have been proud of you... thank you for in part proving our point...(and Freud's too for that matter) please in the future continue to prove everything else we have said and much more ...we have the utmost faith that you can do it...we here at the institute of sociopathic studies salute you... we will be monitoring your progress...if you should wish to contact us look for us in your dreams...we are watching and awaiting your next move...meanwhile keep up the good work...you are making excellent progress...ps the password is baaaaaahhhh.....
You are very lucky Igor. My email inbox tells me Kharkiv is full of beautiful women looking for a man. Is it true?
We in Kyiv love it too!
Duke Pearson was such great. Blue Note sound owes him very much
Neurodisco77 The Blue Note sound and ethos is part of why I make music ( even if you wouldn’t know by listening ! ) , and it’s
proponents ( the musicians) among the finest people born .
I make rock music , but even that stands on the shoulders of giants !
I wholeheartedly agree with you.Blue Note owes Duke Pearson his just due.Note because he wrote Idle Moments. But because he wrote,,arranged and or produced many classic Blue Note sessions..He have not gone down in the jazz history books as he should have.
This is as smooth as a ten year scotch. Great post.
No one could get inside a note like Grant Green.A true groove genius.
Me quedo de piedra de los buenísimos que es este guitarrista.Impresionante.No tengo palabras.Junto con el pianista Sonny Clark.
Sorry to read that Bobby Hutcherson died today. His beautiful playing will live on in performances such as this magnificent one.
Bobby Hutcherson right up there with Grant. Fabulous
Bobby Hutcherson got me through a lot of evenings at home learning jazz. Man, those recordings of him just taught me so much. Scary chops, and marvelous ideas. Being a guitar player myself, his style was just about inspiration for me... I'll never play that quickly. R.I.P. dear Mr. Bobby Hutcherson
Bobby Hutcherson...where to begin...I suppose the film “Round Midnight” is a good place to get Your feet wet. Thank Heaven for RUclips.
@ Agreed 🙏🔥🙏
Pianist Duke Pearson wrote this one. Apparently this nearly 15 minute 1st take turned out to be the best of several subsequent and shorter tries, so this is the one that made the LP even though it took up most of side 1. It sure doesn't seem too long to me....this subtly swinging progression and groove could go on for twice as long and I'd be riveted.
sultry---space between the notes...tone is pure...feel is stunning
Blue Note had some greats
Some wonderful solos ...the piano playing is phenomenal. Trying to learn the runs at 0.75 speed. I swear Duke Pearson's piano has different notes to mine, which will shortly be thrown out of the window.
The piano is so good..
The last chord on the sidewalk ......as the unmatched broken
one . Terrific for a cartoon with TOM § JERRY
Amazing comment dude hahaha you cracked me up
if you want to copy some music, I think it's better to slow down at 0.50 speed so it doesn't change the pitch
(only the octave lower )
lol
Some of the best Jazz ever recorded
I've had this on looped repeat for hours now as I work, simply incredible music.
So nice to hear talented, expressive people listening to each other. Each player, here, stands on his own so far as skill and reputation go. And yet we can almost see them watching and listening for each other. I rediscovered this after 30 years, and during the lockdown. It was still novel, then, a break from life-if you could just chill for a bit. And for those of us who could this was, is and every shall be the definition of “Languor”.
I could write a novel around this track, I swear I could. Couldn’t you?
Mal, I met you at the Jazz Alley in a Seattle engagement. We spoke about hand size and the ability to play inside or outside the chord structure. At the time you recommended your latest album - Exit- No- Exit.
I can't get this beautiful melody out of my mind. Love, love this song and this album. Grant Green soooo underated
A great tune by a great player.
Such a great line up. That's what is so cool about jazz, musicians played with each other in many different combinations.
Seriously I melted.
Perfect mood setting tune when you just want to chill!!!
This is perfection
The idol moment of all time
The good stuff is there to show us exactly what the gold standard is. In any area of life. Thanks so much.
I find that particular piece the most beautiful (classical excluded... it's hard there, hahaha) thing I've ever listened. A true masterpiece, imo!
You know his playing will make any musician GREEN with envy, just the facts of life, a fool could sniff it.
So gorgeous. How not fall in love while listening to this melody.
Matthew this in not a melody .... It is pure 99 carat JAZZ. and Welcome to it,
A beautifully composed ballad and played in slow and double time , all musicians masters of their craft. So intense and relaxing to spent idle moments in best ever way. Playing slow in time together is so difficult.
This is REAL music, & I pity those who have no appreciation for america's original art form, jazz. Grant Green was a gifted jazz guitarist.
aren't BTS better?
all music is real
@@gangmeat9263 agreed. putting down others music does not make music any better, and negativity has no place in Grant's comments
Blues came first but jazz is definitely second!
I don't know why I'm so addicted to this song...
Because it's great
I didn't mean to come here but now I just can't leave... only 6 minutes to go...
Underrated as hell.
Considered an essential jazz number and on many lists of greatest jazz albums because of this song. NOT underrated. It's rated.
This should be in a movie
Chris Matheus
Yes siiiiir!:). and Clint Eastwood, who is usually good with jazz tracks in his movies could a recommended one to do so.
This is touching directly to the heart.....great !!
smooth as silk JAZZ music AT IT'S finest moments in THIS MARVELOUS MYSTERY CALL LIFE, it's 2019,& TIMELESS message, GUITAR, sounds are so refreshing, I'm loving it......PS MUCHO GRACIAS AMIGOS......
💎 morning méditation music as I start my day in Casablanca heading to Tangier on the TGV! 🇲🇦🏝☕💨🧿
@Jacqueline Odigie shukran/merci/thank you!
Loved it, He & Lee Morgan were great writers/composers as well as musicians.
Lee Morgan, gone much too soon was/is still my FAVORITE jazz trumpeter!
Some jazz is TOO good.....almost ILLEGAL.
Fantastic...love it!
Что сказать, волшебники!
Very beautiful music takes me to dream time I heard this song as a child this is very special for anyone who hears this song it is very transcendent thank you for posting
Hard to believe this is half a century old, how much music has changed.
Truman Sharp Music may have changed but the solid stuff, such as this track, stands the test of time. That's my story and I'm sticking to it,lol.
this track is pure ecstasy,
thanks for uploading!
My favorite jazz mood
This song cures anxiety
in the year I was born spectacular music was played.
The most powerful music in the world.
This is damned Tasty !!!
greatest of all time
Can't believe I'm hearing this for the first time today...
as Miles Davis says "Joe Henderson plays his ass off"...crazy solo, it reminds me of Lester young
As smooth as a morning poop after a fresh cup of joe! 👍🏻💩
That’s relaxing!
Sublime
Just awesome. Words can’t describe my feelings when I heard such talent
I have a problem with my eye that requires keeping a warm compress on it for 15 minutes. This worked as well as an alarm timer, and was far more relaxing.
One of my most favourite jazz albums
Soothing, elegant, placid, all encompassing.
Gorgeous!
Owh gosh this is good...
The thumbs down people are so lacking in taste and appreciation for talent they wouldn’t know it if it hit them on their empty heads they need to go back to something that challenges them like Lawrence Welk or country western.
Wowww,magnificent,swing,art, yessss!
Thank you very much for posting this jewel.
So beautiful -- even just the melody stated. I noticed that it even slows down a bit over the course of the song. Which really fits the mood of the tune. Exquisite jazz.
wonderful
Too smooth love this
That floating McCarty pickup on that old Epiphone always sounds great. Especially in Grant's hands.
Mellow and wonderful.
ideal music for idle moments
Great great stuff from all involved
Musical poetry, so mellow so beautyful.
Fantastic music thanks for posting thumbs up!
Great jazz , I’m sure has its place as the best of us.
RIP Mr.Green...you were one special guitarist...
Pura poesia !
Sheer AWESOMENESS...!!!

Grant Green is so cool!
Listening to the HECK out of this recording the other day . Wonderful . Thanks a SUPER lot for posting it Jazz Tuna......Benstarbuck
Impossibly great
This playing as Steve McQueen gets up leaving Ali MacGraw in a messy bed and goes to his car,a long drive follows through the early morning city to put some bad dudes straight. The start of a great movie!
Bullitt?
Steve McQueen was just cool like that! Perfection!
