In this episode I put the Lost “Rad Ripper” through the paces in 1-5’ surf. Lost sent two stock 5’5” surfboards down for review. Both boards are the exact same dimensions with PU Foam and polyester resin. One board has green Mayhem logos with Futures fin boxes that I surfed only as a Thruster and the other board has blue Mayhem logos with FCSII fin boxes that I surfed only as a Quad.
The Rad Ripper is a great paddler and has great down the line speed due to its low rocker design. The outline has that 80’s retro vibe to it with a flat deck, beak nose, and wide tail. The somewhat aggressive tail rocker allows for good traction off the bottom for performance surfing in the pocket.
At times my struggles with the design was stepping past the sweet spot with my front foot being too far forward causing the board to bog in the nose area. Making subtle adjustments to my stance really helped get clean precise turns and increase drive.
After two weeks of testing in perfect point break surf I struggled to surf the Rad Ripper smoothly as a Thruster. Switching to a quad set up really increased flow from rail to rail and I started to gel with the Rad Ripper. The more I surfed it the better it felt and at the end of two weeks I was sorry for the review to be over.
I recommend the Rad Ripper as a one board quiver for intermediate to pro level surfers for 1-5’ surf. I liked this model best as a Quad and my fin suggestions are below.
    Stock Board Dimensions: 5’5” x 18.75 x 2.27 Liters 26
    Recommended Fins:
Futures Fins: JJF Side Fins with HS Quad Rears
FCSII: Performer Side fins with Reactor Quad Rears
    My Height: 5’9”
My weight: 160 lb or 72.57 kg

I have a friend who rides his rad ripper as an FCS quad, and at first, I thought his fin setup was a bit weird. The more I thought about it, the more sense it made. He was riding Mick fanning side fins with reactor quad rears. Heaps of drive and speed from the Mick fannings but still super loose and whippy with the reactor quad rears. When you next review a board, and want to try it in a quad setup, could you please try this fin setup to let us have your opinion on it?
Thanks for the great reviews, ripping as always.

Thanks for the reviews and all your help in all the boards I asked about. I ended up getting a 6.0 34.75 L Rad Ripper.
    I'm close to 6.1 188lbs.
It's about 3/4 more L than my shortboard. And I'm happy I did it's just perfect for what I want it for, none then stellar LA beach break 2-4ft. Only had it two short sessions in 2-4ft. When I'm positioned just right, it's fantastic. But I'm battling a little the same as you having me front foot to far forward. . But sure it will adjust. Also, for some odd reasonIs have started to slip off the board on a few waves taking off back side... Ha ha Never normally happen so odd :)
Like when losing a golf swing :) anyone experienced that on a new board? Again I'm sure it will sort itself out once my footing has tightened up. Again thanks!
Was running at as a quad large jjf and hs. Will try some thrusters, in the beach breaks.

Natural Born Reeler Tue RW is a Favorite of mine and the RR is not. I found the RR to be a little sticky when my feet were not in the sweet spot... I guess every board can be sticky or bogg when I’m not standing on the sweet spots but some boards can be more forgiving. With that being said... the RW is more forgiving, smoother rail to rail... so more flow on the RW, but the RR is faster and more radical.

Noel, stoked on the review. Got to pick one up at Hansens and was surprised how heavy it was (probably because most of my boards are EPS nowadays), but I love the shape and keep hearing a lot of good about the RR. I typical enjoy boards at 35-36L but these have a gap from 34.5 at 6'0" to 36L at 6'1". I'm 6'2" 215 and prefer smaller lighter boards. Any recommendations on sizing? Hi. Love what you do. I understand that ratings and comments are a guide only.. But somewhere here you say the CI UJ is faster than the RR, but on your speed star ratings you have the RR as quicker. So which one is it? Or are we only to compare boards in the same category, or is it speed regardless of category. I ask as I'm considering both boards and also Nb2...

  • @rharmston

Noel, have you ever tried the Nubster fin with quad sets? Would love to hear your thoughts on it if you have ridden it before I pull the trigger on buying one.

    • @surfnshowreviews7777
      @surfnshowreviews7777  4 года назад +1

Bobby Harmston Absolutely... the Nubster really helps with control on a Quad. Quads are really fast and offer good release and sometimes it’s herd to control that speed due to a little slide without that little center fin. Put in a Nubster and you have speed, control, and a tad more pivot with confidence. Nubsters are needed when the waves have a bit more speed and power, or if your riding a really wide tail board as a Quad and you want to control the slide or release.

Hey Noel - I currently own one of these fun sticks and surf it with a quad fin set up in the Long Island, NY/New Jersey area. Do you consider this board a HPSB or would you recommend a true HPSB for when the surf pumps here (Winter's been pretty good this year/Fall hurricane swell)? I was looking at your Pyzel Shadow review and wanted to know how you would compare the Shadow to the RR? Was thinking the RR is more for small-med surf and that I should maybe be on something like the Shadow for hurricane/winter swell here which is typically the the 4-8ft range. Was looking Phantom but wouldn't want to buy a board that's to similar to the RR I already have...

I've had mine for a little over a year now and absolutely love it. As Noel said the quad fin setup on this board is nutss. I now have a pyzel shadow thruster only for the bigger hollow days, and use my RR as a daily driver. It's a great board for summer fun waves but it can also be used in some better quality waves for some more performance surfing

The RR has more get up and go and best in 1-5’ surf. You can have both boards in your quiver and not have much overlap. I would shred the RR in 1-3’ surf and then switch to the Phantom for 4-7’ surf.

Hey Noel, I'm coming back from a 5 year layoff and 20lbs heavier, 30 years old 5'11 @ 170. All my old boards are in that pointy 5'11x18.5x2.25 and feel small.
I was on the very upper end of intermediate when I stopped. Strongly prioritizing a good paddler/wave catcher, but not super strong atm so kinda concerned about burying the rail on these new high performance stubby boards.
This board will be for pleasure point up in santa cruz in that 1-7ft range (one board quiver basically), any board and dim recommendations?

Looks to me like the bogging/overpowering the nose is due to riding at too low volume. This board is meant to be ridden with some extra foam, hence the sharp down rail. At low volume the rail is too sensitive and easily overpowered. Go up a size or two and the board will perform better.

@@surfnshowreviews7777 i loved my old franken weirdo, i got the board after it had been repaired a bunch and gained a ton of weight but was over volume for me at 30L my range is more 26-28. Im 5'11 155-160 and i push pretty hard off my back foot. The board worked so well for 1-5ft surf but obviously with that weight it was a more momentum based board or took a pretty punchy wave to get going but it was really responsive and had insane speed once it really got going or in the right conditions it just lit up. I was given it for free and gave it to a buddy of mine who id like to see progress on the conditions that i can still take it out. Definitely one of my favorite channel islands Ive surfed to date.
