Did not know that We were a literate nation, a percentage well over United States and other countries, and were the first to put electricity in Iolano Palace, that’s truly amazing

Typed it all out for my friends in the deaf community. 🤓
Although the constitutional monarchy comes into place in 1839 under the declaration of rights or one might say 1840 with the first constitution it’s really Kamehameha the first through many of his policies starts to separate out his absolute power. You have to understand Kamehameha came from a long line of Ali'i or Mo'i that had absolute power. What he or she says goes. Kamehameha the first begins to divide out some of his powers, you can see that come into fruition when Kamehameha III forms a constitutional monarchy.
Kamehameha the III Kauikeaouli sees colonization of the Pacific the Spanish are going to take the Marqueces, the French are going to take French Polynesia, Germans were looking to take Samoa, and he is not stupid he knows Hawai'is next. Hawai'i is strategically between the west coast and Japan. Hawai'i was going to be taken, the only way to prevent that is he had to have Hawai'i become a recognized by these other nations as an equal.
Impossible. No way it was a tiny little country in the middle of no where. How are they going to get recognition from these other countries? Never been done before by a non European nation. But he's gotta try, so he starts to build with help and guidance a nation and a constitution and all these things that would be recognized.
So the narrative was the white man came, imposes this form of government upon Hawai'i, then took over. Well Kaimana Beamer and others have shown, no this was purposeful. Again Hawaii would had been a foreign nation by the 1850s if this hadn't happened. But he understands what he needs to do. He turns his nation into a constitutional monarchy - to save it.
Hawaii was looking around the Pacific and saw other nations seeing other countries being colonized so he sent ambassador Timoteo Ha'alilio, William Richards and assistant ambassador George Simpson.
They meet with the representatives from France and From England and on November 28th, 1843 they gain recognition from England and France as a Sovergin and Independent Nation. That's huge. It became a national holiday. That day Lā Kū'oko'a independence day. That day November 28th, 1843 England and France sign a declaration of Hawai'i being a co-equal. So every power that England had every power and right that France had, America had - Hawaii now had. The first Non European nation to achieve that. No one else in Oceania did.
When you think of other nations you think of Japan. They didn't gain international recognion untill 1893, Hawai'i was 50 years prior to that. It was really an incredible achievement and put Hawaii at the table of nation's as an equal.
Now in the case of Hawai'i it's very interesting. Hawai'i was the first non western state to be recognized by the world community. As we said before in 1843. Once you're so recognized - you cannot be colonized anymore.
By the 1890's, Hawaii has over 100 legations and embassies throughout the world. It has peace treaties. It has a treaty of neutrality. It has friendship and commerce treaties with literally every other single country in the world.
Citizenship in the Hawaiian Kingdom was never based on blood quantum, it was never based around any notions of race.
In contrast in the 1840's in the United States inorder to aquire American Citizenship you had to be a white male. That prerequisite of being white actually stays within the regulations of US citizenship for almost another 100 years.
Racially inclusive citizenship laws are being passed 120 years before the American civil rights movements take place in the 1970s. There are a number of examples of former slaves escaping the grips of slavery in America finding their ways the the shores of Hawai'i, naturalizing, becoming a Hawaiian subject, and being afforded all the rights and privileges therein.
Mind you these are former slaves coming from an American system that is based on ideologies of white supremecy.
The Hawaiian monarch at some point declares neutrality in the Crimean Russian War. Hawaii as a nation a co-soverign equal claiming neutrality in this Crimean Russian War forced the other nations of the world to start to say well what does that mean? What are neutrality laws internationally? And they hadn't really been developed that well.
Keanu wrote a great article about Hawaiian Neutrality: From the Crimean Conflict through the Spanish-American War. Sep 12, 2015. That was sparked by the Hawaiian Kingdom. So the Hawaiian Kingdom is at the forefront of developing international law and neutrality.
You have Hawai'i by the 1860's mid 60's Hawaii almost as a universally literate nation. That's incredible I mean we know that literacy was well over 90% and that was written by missionaries written by everyone that Hawaii was nearly a universally literate nation. So somewhere between 90 to 95% literacy.
At the same time the US literacy rate was around 70%. In many countries around the world it was only 30%. The Hawaiian Kingdom was one of the most literate nation's in the world.
They produced one of the most prolific news paper scenes. They have 100 Hawaiian language news papers published in the 19th century. We have 125K pages of thought and news in the news papers.
In 1861 there is a beautiful newspaper put out by Ka Nupepa Kū'oko'a it's on January 1st 1861, they have a color flag on the news paper in red white and blue. That was the first printing of a colored flag by any newspaper anywhere in the world. That was 30 years before there was the use of color in any US Newspaper. That was Hawaiians in the Kingdom doing that.
In the 1870's 1880's you have King Kalākaua setting many firsts. The first monarch to circumvent the globe.
While King Kalākaua was in Paris he hears about the demonstration of a new invention going on. So he goes and he sees this demonstration and it's the light bulb, Thomas Edison. And so he meets Edison on his way back to Hawai'i he stops in New York and meets Edison and meets at his offices and contracts to have electricity brought to Hawai'i. And 'Iolani palace is lit up in 1887 with electricity by Edisions folks, long before the White House. I mean the US White House the Buckingham palace having electricity after Hawaii did it and state house.
There's another cute story the fact that when electricity did go into the White House in the US the President was scared of it and wouldn't use it because he thought it was magic."

Hallelujah and mahalo ke akua for our intelligent royals. They utilized hard work and ike (knowledge) to gain recognition from many countries around the world that still till this day we are an independent state.
It was only a matter of time that Europeans would realize our beautiful aina and take it from the Hawaiian people. There is no treaty. We must realize that we are an illegally occupied country not colonized.
