Enterprise, is scheduled for decommissioning on 1 December 2012 at Norfolk Naval Station, Virginia, with its inactivation scheduled to begin no later than 15 March 2013. The deactivation of the Enterprise will result in a one-time increase of approximately $857.3 million in depot maintenance costs for the U.S. Navy's operation and maintenance budget for Fiscal Year 2013.
Enterprise will be the first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier decommissioned. Petitioners and naval enthusiasts have requested the Enterprise be converted into a museum, including a 2009 Internet-based petition. However, while costs of doing so regarding her nuclear reactors has yet to be calculated by the United States Department of Defense, by 2012 they had been deemed too expensive to make such an effort practical. A petition has also been set up for the next carrier (CVN-80) to be named as the ninth USS Enterprise.
Newport News Shipbuilding will deactivate and de-fuel the ship after her decommissioning. The process is scheduled to begin Summer 2013 and be completed in 2015. Once the Navy dismantles and recycles the ship's reactors, there will be very little left to turn into a museum; virtually everything two decks below the hangar bay would have to be cut apart. What remains of Enterprise following 2015 is currently scheduled to be taken to Washington state for scrapping. However, it remains possible the ship's island could be removed and used as a memorial.
My youngest son was on the last cruise of the USS Enterprise. It was the last air craft carrier he served on. He is now on board a destroyer, the USS Jason Dunham
Yes!!! Enterprise was inactivated on December 2012. Enterprise length:
1,123 ft (342 m). Nimitz: 1,092 feet (332.8 m).

It happened at 8:19am, 14 Jan 1969, the day I'll never, ever forget, RIP my Brothers
If I’m gonna be honest nothing will be better then USS Enterprise Cv-6
(Yes I am aware that is the carrier that served in WWII)
I proudly served on this great ship from October 1987 to January 1991, in that time, we did 2 tours in the Persian gulf region during the Iran-Iraq war escorting oil tankers, which we were involved in actual combat with the Iranian navy in 1988! We taunted the Soviets where ever we encountered them, including the Vladivostok region. This may sound like war mongering then so be it, I'm not ashamed of it. In February of 1990 we visited the other giant of the western hemisphere, Brazil! We visited Rio de Janeiro ,a beautiful city in a beautiful country. From an American perspective, Rio is New York City, Miami Beach, and Yosemite National Park all wrapped up into one. Simply awesome!
I served on the Big E 63 to 65 did a Med cruise and Operation Sea Orbit when she sailed around the world. Many, many wonderful memories.

Who the heck are you??? Some kind of anti American idiot. Go over to Iraq and talk your crap, they know how to handle it.
Dan, Thank you so much for your service (and you too John Belanger)! I steamed with COMDESRON 23 which was part of the Enterprise battle group back in 1986. We went through the Suez Canal right after the Sixth Fleet did a number on Libya. We went into the Gulf of Sidra a number of times (my ship, not the Enterprise) daring that son of a bitch to do something about it but not so much as a seagull so it was rather quiet and uneventful for us!
Would've been nice to see that ship become a museum. So much history represented here but alas, you can only do that with so many carriers!
Nevermind the rest of these idiots! The USA may not be perfect but I am PROUD to be an American and a U.S Navy Veteran! There are a good number of names and insults I can hurl at jonthfc1010 but I think I will just let him continue to make an idiot of himself! I will not speak ill of another country just because it is represented by some idiot who pretends to speak on their behalf! I hope they have pride and love their country as we love ours!
looks like you had a good time !! Happy for you.Did you know in 1971 during the India Pakistan War over Bangladesh, Nixon had send The Enterprise ,the seventh fleet, To the Bay of Bengal to side with the Pakistani,s ?? Then Russia ,India's ally sent it;s seventh fleet to counter. Then Nixon backed off.The Soviet Union as known then and US had come very close to military conflict.Read about it .on India Pak war 1971. The seventh fleet.
Oh yea . Also India had prepared around 70 or 80 Suicide pilots to sink the entire 7th fleet.
What a namesake and what a vessel. I only hope our leaders have the balls to create a new age carrier that is worthy of the name Enterprise. God bless all our men and women that have, that are, and will serve.
We took this ship through full refit in Bremerton from 1979 to 1982 and then on to West Pac as a much better ship then when she came into the yard in Bremerton. The ship hasn't looked as good since. Rest in pieces Big E.
Why would anyone thumbs down this!? This was awesome, thank you for all of those who served aboard the U.S.S Enterprise. She was a great American vessel.
Live Long and Prosper USS Enterprise CVN-65 and NCC 1701.
Went on the USS Enterprise when a kid in the 70s when it visited my home town.. it was massive and an inspiring sight,,sat in the cockpit of a Corsair which was a huge thrill , kind of sad seeing her de-commissioned - some great memories
I sailed three cruises on "The Big E" from 1975 - 78, attached to VF-1 as a Plane Captain, and I was proud to be aboard.
Mary Metherson I served on her but I was vf 2 I'm also I'm the cruise book 76
Four decades, not a bad career for an Aircraft Carrier !
Sad to see my one time home for a 6 month deployment to Indian Ocean. What an experience that was. VA-22 was a Great Squadron to be stationed in. I will never forget all the men I served with in Uniform and will carry these memories with me forever.
read my comment to dan sapp
Simply the best!
Awesome!.. The Big E has visited down under 👍🇳🇿
I was on Big E on this Voyage👊😎 gonna miss the ol girl
This was the carrier that tried to attack India but failed due to soviet interference
Served 4 years (98-01 )in "Big E". met my wife while stationed here. I was deployed on a DDG when they retired her. I was sad until my wife told me she was going to the retirement(decomm) so she could get photos. She ran into one of my buddies while stationed with her(Big E). He was able to get my wife up to my old work space for photos. I do get to see her get stripped to nothing as I retired and live in VA, only 30 minutes or so away from where they are dismantling her. I was able to go and get part of our (mine/wife) history before I retired. But still sad to see her in her current state. Have both very fond and very sad memories with Big E. I would not change any of them. They help make me the better man I am today. Enough mooey gooey eyeball stuffs. Get back to work you bunch of dopple-gangers. lol
The old girl was retired.
She was CVAN-65 when I was on her----Airdale from VF-102---seems not long ago----aah-----56 years
I was there, she was wonderful
I was on Big E when she still had the phased array radar dome.
No, the USS Enterprise is bigger than the U.S.S Nimitz.
I used to love watching Phantoms and Vigilantes back in the early 60's. Magnificent birds for the time.
Thanks to the 'Big E" for it's long and commendable service! Fairwinds and following seas. Thanks to Rumoaohepta7 for uploading this and not making it into another music video :)
You weren't hearing a fly but were most likely hearing interference from the many radar located on board. You Carrier guys can let me know if I'm wrong on this. I served on the USS Independence (CVA-62) from early 69 to mid 71.
Hurry Q's JJ own

Really Great..God bless everyone..☝️
We modify most of them and refit over and over again but eventually the metal wears down and is considered too unstable, or the hull design is holding us back, but at least they last a while :)
"Captain's log, stardate 9529.1. This is the final cruise of the starship Enterprise under my command. This ship and her history will shortly become the care of another crew. To them and their posterity will we commit our future. They will continue the voyages we have begun and journey to all the undiscovered countries, boldly going where no man - where no one - has gone before."
nice video
Need to bring the USS Enterprise to San Diego, to be with the USS Midway!
Apparently its too radioactive to be opened to the public
@@stipe9520 Yeah she's too Radioactive, it's unfortunate would love too see the old girl with a homeport somewhere.. Serving along the Enterprise was among the best experience ive ever had 👊😎 Now i'm working for Huntington Ingalls Industry and just now finishing the USS. John F. Kennedy CVN.79 and can't wait too start work on the USS. Enterprise CVN.80
My heart hurts. That a proud and beautiful lady should be scraped. I am glad that The Big "E" name sake will be in the Navy as CVN 80. I told my kids I just want to live long enough to see her sail lol. To see the Enterprise sail again!
welcome
Super
My dad was in the Big E during the Vietnam War and served as a chief petty officer (CPO) until 1985.
My father was on the Enterprises first tour back in 1962 I beleive. I have a large coin they gave to all the sailors at the time commemorating the first tour.
Home is the sailor home from the sea. Home is the hunter home from the hill

Nice
Her Nuclear reactors deemed her not save to be open to public even when the reactors have been removed.
Saptono Istiawan
I got see the Enterprise when she visited Australia in the 1960's... she was in Australia to coincide with a visit by, then US President, Lyndon Johnson.
She an awesome sight in Sydney Harbour. He was not so awesome.. he got booed everywhere he went... the Vietnam crisis, and Australia's involvement, was a sore point here at the time.
I just wanna know- on her final voyage, did the crew bug the captain to set the autodestruct? >_< Code Zero Zero Zero Destruct Zero if I recall correctly.

3:10 Ohh so that's how they stop almost immediately

Top gum assas indomável
USS Enterprise with TopGun them song 😊
The ol' girl has been through some rough times.
Oh yeah very good.
They wont, removeing the 8 nuclear reactors is going to be very expensive and basicly everything below the hanger bay will be scrapped up because of the reactors so theres not much of a ship left afhter removeing nuclear fuel + reactors is finished.
I was at sea on HMAS Melbourne with Enterprise
Ex Australian navy 1966 to 1975.
Good mens like global reality

AO 87-90
Someone might have said this already but the new USS Gerald Ford should have been named Enterprise.
CVN-80 USS Enterprise will be the 3rd Ford class ship built and will be delivered around 2025 (though construction will begin in 2018)
amezing impression
SEMPER FORTAS. Thank you.
After 50 years operating the entire ship apparently too contaminated to be opened to public.

It's sad thing
The enterprise is over 50 years old, it was time to go! this ships had a hard life! RIP Big E!!!
did God ever told us to make these weapons and vehicles? I guess not !!!!
Good bye, Enterprise.
Grey ghost!
Amerika. Mondo. Democracia. ❤️🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
what if their is big waves where do they put all the aircrafts?
There aren't waves high enough (unless it's the freaking apocalypse) that would reach the top of the ship. The flight deck might get a little washed-up mist every now and then, but nothing to wash the aircraft away :3
the enterprise is no longer in service
МЫ НЕПОБЕДИМЫ !!!
啧~ 漂亮! 属实是漂亮!!!!

Different ship. In fact another nuclear carrier called the USS Enterprise is being constructed.
