Just picked up a Neo G7 today because I wanted a 4k monitor to go with my 4080 and needed something I could use for both work and gaming. Have to say turning down an OLED was a tough choice but these Neo series seem like the best bet for anyone not interested in maintaining an OLED screen or multitasking for work. Microcenter running a great deal for the Neo G7 at about 800 right now.
@@sleepssL Blooming is unnoticeable when set to auto and the curve is very easy to enjoy, since you did not need to swivel your head to take things in.
Wanna know something crazy? I got a Neo G7 32 inch curved monitor the other day at best buy for $230… the lady said she had never seen a discount like that in her life. I bought it quickly and ran out extremely happy 😂
Hey Tim, since we have a dedicated monitor channel, can we get a video on the state ultrawides? Maybe a basic breakdown of the options on the market worth considering, and what's coming in the future. Seems like the UW market has been pretty quiet for a while and I'm really hoping that we see more mid-priced options hit the market in the near future(my personal budget is $400-$600 for a 1440 120+, but the 'right' monitor can certainly influence that). LOVE that OLED Alienware - but dat OLED price tag though, and the locked firmware is tough to swallow with that price(this would be a pretty damn long term purchase for someone like me, if that ever happened)
OLED will continue to decrease in price, as will monitors with increasing numbers of FALD zones. IMO, I would not purchase a display right now. HDR is seriously awesome and it'll be impossible for me to go back to an SDR-only setup (it's like a performance-free graphics upgrade - games with proper HDR support look absolutely *stunning* on an OLED) One NEGATIVE I've found with my OLED is that it is NOT GREAT when playing games below 90FPS. All LCDs & OLEDs use a "sample-and-hold" method of displaying frames. On an LCD, there's a sort of natural motion-blur due to the slower pixel response times. On an OLED however, with the near-instant response times, this can result in a sort-of "stuttering" appearance to the image when doing things like quickly rotating an in-game camera. The C1's black-frame-insertion can help mitigate this in certain situations. Secondly, OLEDs are still lacking in total brightness capability. When it comes to something like displaying HDR content it's not really a problem because OLED can also display TRUE blacks, resulting in an extremely large perceptible contrast. But if you will frequently be using your display in a very bright room then OLED may not be the best choice for you (YET! They're getting better every year and the new QD-OLED panels are about 20% brighter than last year's panels) Also note that a _21:9 3440x1440 UW_ is roughly 26% more pixels than _16:9 2560x1440_ resolution and requires a good bit more horsepower to run at higher FPS. On the other hand, it's also roughly HALF the resolution of full _3840x2160 4k_. When I buy a display I expect to get *AT LEAST* five good years out of it. I did a LOT of research before I purchased my C1 OLED in regards to burn-in, "future-proofing," etc and I'm extremely pleased with the purchase.
@@erikhendrickson59 what about poor folks like me who have never had a monitor and have been gaming on laptop screens. Sad. I think a good approach is to buy a good trusty mid range and bang for buck fast IPS today and wait for 2-4 years for OLED to become mainstream.
There's an MSI version coming with the same panel, might drive down prices a bit and it might offer a flashable firmware too, so fingers crossed on that one. Also, if the subpixel structure or burn-in is a problem to you there's a flat panel AOC ultrawide with a very high number of zones, might be worth looking in to as well. I think there's some more miniLED stuff coming up but who knows when that will really release? Otherwise, previously premium displays like the lg 34GN850 are massively coming down in price due to the advent of good HDR monitors. Actually, that monitor would be my top recommendation for you, since it's way more reasonably priced now and offers great response times.
@@eldenlord5326 :) Yes, it can be true for a lot of people. 32:9 will be even better and after working on it or playing on it, you won't go back to 16:9 or 21:9. It's really unbelievably immersive. If it were qd-oled 32:9 with the same level of brightness around 800 nits (real scene not 2-5% HDR window), it would be the best experience ever :))
Love this overview. I’m sure there is a general interest in 1440p VS 4K in 2022 for gaming and productivity work, at 27” and 32”. I know other channels did this last year in regards to gaming specifically, but it seems like it’s time for an update. Some people insist there is a visible difference in things like text clarity between 4K and 1440p at 27”. Some don’t see it. For 32” more claim to notice a difference, but some regard it as minimal. I can see how this would be the case for FPS gaming, but visuals showing the difference for things like text clarity would be much welcomed.
This is exactly why I purchased both the C1 OLED and the AW3423DW.... I feel like although pricey, it offers the best of everything that I was looking for in a gaming/productivity/entertainment monitor setup. The AW is an unmatched stand alone gaming monitor.. The only thing I would want is a 38inch version of it. other than that... It's the best gaming option in my opinion
I have this exact setup, and im very happy with it too. I think ideally for me, I would have gotten the c2 42inch (the c1 48inch on sale was half the price at the time) and I agree, would love the AW to be 38inches. These would have been the best sizes for a the c2 to be mounted above the AW for me. We are lucky either way, these are top tier!
Received mine today and i can assure anyone on the fence about this monitor that it is godlike gaming monitor. Because it is oled 1440p looks really close to 4k
I returned my Alienware AW3423DW because of the 2 annoying fans inside, ancient ports, bad reflection and poor subpixel layout. If you do gaming + watch videos only then the Alienware might be the ultimate monitor, but if you do 8 hours of office work a day it's a big fat no. Switched to a 42C2 and much happier now.. it was also cheaper at 950 euros. I'm waiting for a 38" UWQHD+ QD-OLED with 3840 x 1600 resolution. Hopefully combined with USB-C PD >65w, HDMI 2.1, better reflection handling, no gsync module (so no fans) and better subpixel layout to combat color fringing.
I know this is a 1 year old post but, how tall are you? At 5ft 7 inches tall, I found the LG C2 42 to be to big in the height department, at least since it has no curve.
I have the Alienware AW3423DW and I agree with tim about the blacks not being full blacks when there are light sources around in front of the screen. It makes it seem like the oled blacks get washed out to grey. but if you turn off all the lights in the room it becomes super black again. Kinda sucks but i already made the purchase and i'm decently happy with it. I'm just gonna have to move the lamp around in my room lol
You don't need to wall mount 42 inch display... You can just get table mount with 2 joints and move it however you want... Upward, backwards, forwards downwards... Heck you may even pull it off as portrait if the arm is tall enough and yet arm stand costs like 50-80 bucks for the stronger more sturdy ones.
I was REALLY torn between the LG C2 42” and the AW3423DW. I ended up pulling the trigger on the C2 and I can safely say it was the best decision. I’m running most games on Ultrawide 21:9 mode with a custom resolution of 3840x1600. So basically playing at 4K resolution with the top and bottom cut out and in Ultrawide format. The experience is incredible. With the Alienware I would’ve been limited to just the 21:9. With the LG I get that plus 16:9 for games that don’t support Ultrawide. That and of course all the other sweet stuff that comes with a tv.
i choose to get both have a 65 lg g1 for couch gaming and a pg32uqx for playing fps games and damn this monitor blinded me when i looked at a phantom explode in halo infinite
So happy you put this video out last night I was up till 2am looking at all 4 of these trying to see which I like best. Your amazing and so is the videos thank you for all the time you put in.
I have the LG C2 and use it for gaming and productivity. After spending a while getting the settings right, I am finding it really good. I love how much space there is for my workflow, and games look stunning. I've heard that burn-in on the C1 wasn't really an issue, so I am hopeful that it won't be a problem for the C2. Also, being able to get rid of my stacked monitors has made my setup so much cleaner!
I have one too but I am still tuning settings for gaming and content playback. I could use a recommendation of a general setting where I can start from. I can’t quite get my darkest blacks and brightest whites in balance to provide the eye-popping images many have experienced with the LG C2 42”
There's a video by TFT central on settings for the C2, and Tom the Tech Chap also had a settings section in his video I think. Otherwise there is a reddit post called "How to access LG Service Menu without the Service Remote", and that details how to turn off the auto dimming. Turning on HDR in Windows makes a big difference as well. I think that getting familiar with the settings and learning what they do is a big part of it, turning off the auto dimming, turning on HDR in Windows gets you most of the way there. I also stopped my PC from auto sleeping, but set the screensaver to be a blank screen after 15 mins...which stops the TV from losing signal and going to the super annoying gallery images.
I am still happy with the G8. The scanlines are not that much of an issue as they are not something you typically see, and in desktop mode you simply can use 120hz. The 240hz is an important feat while gaming competitive. The 1000R is something I like and is a personal preference. Still the extensive review and comparison was done in a great, professional way.
I returned my Alienware AW3423DW going from a 4K monitor to the 1440p AW3423DW was not a great experance, games seem more blurry and not as sharp you can clearly see the difference from a 4K monitor with a less sharp picture on the Alienware, input lag was also terrible on the AW3423DW along with the 21.9 aspect ratio on a 34" screen which i found with you tube video etc intolerable with black bars either side of the screen, also with NO firmware updates ever i returned it and bought the Samsung Neo G8 and i love it, HDR in much more punchier than the AW3423DW with much brighter specular highlights in HDR mode on the G8 and the colors on the Neo G8 are just as good as the Alienware in my opinion as are the inky blacks if you are sat directly Infront of it, i feel the G8 is a much underrated Monitor and it will never burn-in, the reports of burn-in on the AW3423DW on reddit already also put me off, if i ever go back to an OLED monitor it must be 4K ideally a 32" monitor with a 16.9 aspect ratio, i have the LG CX OLED and love it but OLED as a monitor with static images is asking for trouble, the tech just isn't suited for monitors in my opinion i already had mild image retention on my AW3423DW when i returned it which was undefeatable with the pixel shifter.
Incredible comparison! Super technical, with easy to understand descriptions and all the info I could need to compare which one I want! Thanks!… Still can’t decide tho..
At my place I'm getting a Neo G7 at significant discount to Alienware and LG. Also despite 2-3 year assurance I'm still cannot trust OLED. I still have my Dell FHD 20"inch IPS monitor 2013. It still works perfectly and I tend to leave monitors on for long time idle displaying a satic content. I don't think any of the current OLEDs would last me this long. So I'm going with Neo G7.
It is really awesome to finally seeing more OLEDs coming to the PC world. I am also torn between the 2 OLEDs, but i am going to wait a couple of months and see, if new OLED-monitors hit the market
There should be more like the AW3423DW coming soon. Both Samsung and MSI are coming out with a version. There is the Asus OLEDs coming as well but they are 42” and 48” models and being from Asus I expect them to be priced quite high and definitely higher than the LG models. I have the C2 42” and love it. I made the jump from a 1440p 144hz to 4K 120hz OLED with proper HDR. The move was definitely worth it.
@@wile123456 I feel like the Sony tax is because of the processing that they have (at least on their Bravia TVs anyway) and the asus tax is just purely ROG RGB kind of thing that I found pretty much a seizure magnet for me
Heads up: AW QDOLED deliveries are getting much faster. Mine took a total of 1 week from order to received. (USA). Same for many others in reddit and discord.
Found an LG C2 brand new for under 1k USD after doing some searching around, and I couldn't be happier. Easily the best display I've ever used. I had a 165hz Dell S3220DGF before this and it feels almost as smooth despite the lower refresh rate.
It should. OLED pixels physically respond faster at any given refresh rate. Less time between transitions. Linus has a video using a high speed camera showing it. It's pretty neat
I have the Dell Monitor, too. Can't really complain, only the viewing angles are horrible, typical for a va monitor and my unit has a little bit of backlight bleed, but still i am very happy with it.
Damn here it's over $2000 USD or around $3000 AUD. Not that I have the money for one anyway but yeah it's a little ridiculous that it's 2x the price even in USD in Australia.
I just got my Neo G8, and I am very happy with it! It is at 240Hz, and I don't see any scan lines, dead pixels, or dark/brown spots. It might just be because I'm getting older, and my eyes aren't as good as they once were. I use a VESA mount, so I don't have to worry about the wobble. I don't even notice the heavy matt finish. It sure made The Division 2 look amazing. I see all kind of new details I missed before. I don't know if it's because of the 4K or the HDR or both. I think I'm going to keep the G8 as I don't see any defects with it so far.
there was a bad batch during the launch, amazon had them too, they sold them at big discount, i think $1099. on reddit users are reporting no scanlines with new batches.
The G8 has a semi matt finish so it's actually almost as good as glossy without the poor reflection performance. The g7 on the other hand has a matt finish.
1 thing about the AW3423DW that I'd say makes it usable for desktop work is that it has a 3 year burn in warranty, so if your someone who upgrades their monitor within a 3 year (like me) window the burn in is less of an issue
I just use my old monitor for heavy desktop work.. I love the AW it's incredible for movies and games, and is fine for short-term desktop work, but for long-term desktop work (many hours) I'd rather just use LCD.
@@RGAMEPLAYS123 scaling looks fine, if you adjust your color and contrast to your liking, you might not notice as much that you're at 1440p. But there's a difference.
Man it's so hard to pick between the Alienware and the G7 Neo, especially since their cost is identical. On one hand ultrwide, OLED perfect blacks and the motion clarity is pretty much the endgame on the Dell. On the other, the better HDR brightness, never bother about burning, much better for consoles and true 4K for media consumption, the Neo wins in there. I...I can't chose man...
Same boat as you, you really nailed exactly how I’m feeling. One part me is like “well if I wait 1 more year for a 32 4k oled” after having waited for a decent oled option for the last few years. On the other hand I’m thinking “don’t let perfection be the enemy of good” as I’m 100% sure I would love either of them, and who knows when that spec of oled will finally release, or the price it will release at?!
@@natevonhartleben2737 yeah, luckily I’m in no hurry as my 1440p165Hz MSI is still pretty decent so when I make the jump to 4K I really want endgame performance and especially uncompromising HDR. So yeah, waiting a year or so for a 32” 4K OLED would be the best of both worlds.
Same, currently have an Alienware AW3418DW and it's been giving me trouble at times. I like ultrawide (my main setup is two ultrawides stacked on top of each other). I like the new Alienware for the QD-OLED and the familiarity of the aspect ratio. I like the Neo G7 for the 4k resolution (I'd like to use my consoles on it instead of having to go to a TV) but the curve really turns me off. 1000R in a 32" 16:9? Ew... If the Neo G7 was flat I´d buy it in a heartbeat.
@@Juandachu I actually disagree about the curve, I have a previous generation odyssey 32", idk if you've tried it at all in real life, but at least for me its extremely comfortable. I know a million people on r/monitors and stuff complain, but as someone who actually owns one, I think if people genuinely give It an honest try, for many it would be comfortable, immersive, natural, and makes a relatively large 32" monitor /feel/ a bit more digestible like a 27" but is still physically as large and as immersive as a 32"
I was running an MSI 32" Curved 1080p, 165hz monitor from Walmart which costs about 249.99 usd. I recently purchased a 42" LG C2 during the sale that BestBuy was having for 799.99 usd. I could not believe the difference! It is amazing! The one thing I noticed right away playing my Xbox Series X and PC was there is no more ghosting. The MSI monitor was notorious for ghosting. This was to be expected for the price and what Walmart carries as far as PC accessories go. All in all, I absolutely love the LG C2!
Thanks for the informative content on these videos, Tim. I bought a Spyder X and followed your monitor calibration tutorial and it has been a game changer. The LG C2 is a TV, would you consider doing a video on how to calibrate a TV using popular colorimeters as well?
I much prefer the 1000R curve of the Neo G8 I recently purchased, after I sold the LG C2 42 inch, since it did not have a curve, no display port and was simply to big for me to use comfortably.
The shitty Gsync module and fan noise are a problem with the Alienware. Having a loud monitor would be way too annoying. They need to drop the Gsync module so they can drop the active cooling. Then drop the price $200 that the module adds on. Then without the limitations of the shitty module, put HDMI 2.1 on.
The fan isn't that loud. When you have any kind of sound while using your PC you'll never hear it. But yes i agree it shouldn't be a thing especially at that price
@@amerkiller1995 i only got my opinion of from reviews and a frien has it as well and i played a few times on it as well. maybe it's a thing only some modules have. i also didn't watch into any forums for that but when it's really that loud than ... damn that shouldn't be like that
@@Lxcx311 some reviews mentioned it, quite a few complaints on reddit about it too, my monitor has been quiet first few days but recently i can hear it, like a heavy nonstop HVAC sound, arranged a return today and new one should be this/next week, if it's the same bs with the fan i'll get the C2
The fan on my AW3423DW is imperceptible unless I literally put my ear to the back of it and even then I can barely hear it. I have a feeling people got faulty units.
I love my AW3423DW. I'm mainly a PC gamer, so while the lack of HDMI 2.1 was a little disappointing, it's hasn't really affected me. Much more annoying are the firmware not being user-upgradeable and the OSD not having enough color calibration options (something that could have been fixed... with a firmware upgrade). That being said, the price was very good for the quality of the monitor imo and the actual experience of gaming on it has been outstanding. Hopefully the text fringing can also be addressed down the road (I believe Microsoft just has to account for the subpixel layout in ClearType), but it hasn't really been an issue for me to be honest.
@@AMBBrr yeah, I never notice the curve in use, immersion is awesome, and 32" is still pretty large in terms of monitor size, so bringing the corners towards the user still makes an appreciable difference IMO.
The 34" UW monitors are the best choice for people with high end GPUs that want to max out the graphics and enjoy the eye candy while playing offline games or for people that do content consumption or "creation" (to some extent) as well, For me personally the AW3422DW was the perfect monitor in the whole existence. It's just perfect in everyway.
I got C2 48" for 2 weeks on my table and is amazing.Bought it for 940€ in Slovakia.Im using it for games, films, youtube, not as monitor for web browsing and working.I was little scared for big diagonal from beginning but Im not complaining.Probably go to hang on the wall (15cm farther from my eyes) for better use.
As a full time coder, I have no issues with text clarity of the AW3423DW when using cleaytype tuner. Though I bought the monitor primarily for HDR gaming. Also you failed to mention the AW3423DW comes with a 3 year warranty for any burn in issues or dead pixels.
Still , 3 years warannty is shit for the amount of cost of this monitor. In general there's should be laws forcing tech companies offering the at least 5 years warranty by default when you buy tech products of over 1000+ euros. But since we as customers we allaowing those garbage capitalistic policies to passing out its our fault.
Great comparison video, something I've been looking for in a while! One general question, why is it you always say the full name, rather than just abbreviate it to "the G8, the G7, the AW"? I have to say I sometimes lose track of which monitor your mentioning when you say Alien Ware AW3423DW and the ...
I am sooo tempted by the M32U. Built in kvm is just sooo nice. Really wish that would become more standard. Saves so much desk clutter and you don’t need two devices to switch between devices.
It's probably the best monitor overall, sans those who must have the irritating babycare that is the Alienware UW. Good luck getting one that isn't broken, or with more dead pixels than live ones. A friend of mine in the UK had to return...SIXTEEN of them (lol) just to get one without broken levels of everything.
The samsung g70a is good as well but like the m32u, hdr is pointless. The g70a also doee not have the best display port support but hdmi 2.1 works really well.
I'm really digging the 42 OLED, I mean not yet, but when it gets near $2k Aussie, that's definitely on the cards, one day. The 60hz strobbing of the C2s though, I don't know if I want that or not, need to watch more Monitor Unboxed stuff I think, might be explained here somewhere (or maybe in the future, I think it has been covered in a previous HUB review).
@@habibmate I just ordered my c2 for 850 including taxes from amazon and damn that's a massive price decrease in just 3 weeks if what you say is true about it being 1300+ when you saw it.
Not exactly, G8 has a better PPI, and better antireflective coating which is important for productivity. after all, curved displays are more ergonomic for productivity to me. But in terms of price, yeah! prices are getting crazy! I got a deal for my G8 on Amazon though.
I love your reviews. Will you please review the Sony A90K 42”? I was set on a C2 until I found a like-new, open box Sony for only $1012 from Best Buy. The PS5 looks absolutely incredible on it. I used to play on my LG CX 65” but have moved the PS5 into my gaming room.
I bought the Neo G8, returned it due to a flicker with the DP and scan lines at 240hz. Picked up the G7 and had it calibrated last night. Its absolutely stunning. Death Stranding and Cyberpunk both look unbelievable. The curve is a none issue as I sit fairly close. So I would recommend this monitor for gamers with a healthy budget (IE card that can push the frames to match the refresh rate and 4k native resolution) I am however concerned about long term reliability. For now its incredible.
Hi @TravelDude Are you still happy with the G7 after 6 months? I'm considering buying it. It's really hard to find a monitor that has ~32" 4k and good text quality for programming combined with high refresh rate and HDR for watching movies and gaming. I'll be switching from Dell S3220DGF - 32" 1440p 165 Hz curved VA - so I like this form factor, but my main problem is low resolution at only ~90 PPI, which I don't find good for working with text and multiple windows side by side.
I got g8 for 1192 us dollars with taxes very happy with it after a couple of week got use to curve no scan lines maybe lucky I got a good panel...you got to play around to adjust your settings for best picture
Absolutely amazing video, I enjoy listening to your monitor breakdowns. The level of detail that you put into these comparisons and reviews are in a league of their own. I may be totally biased here, but I love my AW3423DW. The monitor works great for my usage case which is primarily desktop gaming, and is such a massive step up from a majority of "normal" monitors. The HDR, true blacks, and overall width of the monitor make games feel significantly more immersive than with an IPS panel at night where you can see the glow, or the "gray" blacks. I actually upgraded from an AW2721D which I found myself super impressed by due to the high refresh rate and G-Sync ultimate module. When I saw the 3423DW was being released though, I knew I had to have it. QD-OLED technology in monitor size, with 175HZ refresh rate is a crazy combo on paper, and is as good as it sounds IMO. Dell QC and support can suck sometimes though (speaking from experience with the 3423DW, my 2721D, and my M15 R6 all having varying issues) which I think is honestly the biggest drawback to this monitor. I think the C2 is fantastic in its own way, but the size wouldn't work for my setup at all, so the 3423DW was the logical choice for me.
What do you think about the text clarity issue with the AW3423DW? I'm thinking of buying this monitor but I get worried when I hear people say that text isn't very sharp. I intend to use the monitor not just for games but also for work, whcih requires reading a lot of text.
@@MajinVegeto89 The text clarity threw me off initially, but now I don’t even notice it when using the monitor. I haven’t used cleartype or any type of supplement to fix the text clarity because it became a non issue so fast for me.
Important information for people using this video to make a decision: In the EU the C2 is already heavily discounted. I was able to buy one for 999€ from an official retailer. So it's the cheapest option out of these 4 monitors.
I want to see 4K 240Hz with QD-OLED and I think it's only matter of time for it to become more affordable. Also with DP 2.0 as well. Strobing. Flat definitely.
I came to the same conclusion in regards to productivity usage. None of the highest end monitors right now are suited for web browsing or writing code. It’s unfortunate that with all the wonderful technologies (QDOLED, OLED, miniled) available, none of the monitor vendors is making a standard size (27/32’) 4K 16:9 144Hz non curved product.
just imagine a 48 or 42 like a ultrawide - but with the top and bottom parts included - I love my 48 c1 - mounted to my desk on a monitor arm. I use mine for work - dividing my screen into 3x24 inch screens with another 3 smaller screens for apps or notes - all on one display - then when work is done - it provides extremely immersive gaming or movies - the responsiveness and motion clarity is also incredible - even at 4k@100fps - the image is clear, smooth and responsive.
@@swadeisno1 42/48 is too big for me as a computer screen. I have my 77C1 when I want to game with a controller, but then for work/competitive gaming I’d prefer 1 or 2 smaller monitors (27/32) with good resolution (1440p is good but I’d like to upgrade), fast reaction time and good quality (no halo effect for instance, no fear of image persistency…)

Swapping out my c2 and buying the g8 now that it's on sale. Love love love the c2 but it's just unfortunately too big for my desk. Once a 32 inch OLED monitor (not tv) gets announced, I'll buy that one
You should also review the Samsung QN90b 43 Inch TV. It has similar tech to the Neo G8 but may have better QC simply because it was made to be a TV. It's the mini LED counterpart to the LG C2 42 inch : meant to be a TV but because of it's inputs, VRR and high refresh rate and small size, suitable to be a PC monitor.
Can you try using a custom resolution on the LG C2 and turning it into a 21:9 display? It should suit the oled ability to completely turn off when not in use.
@@MrChomiq not quite…sure, you *can* just toggle that on the tv and call it a day, but you may not want to do that. By default, the resolution that LG considers “native” for 21:9 is 3840x1080, which is not really ideal. I went ahead and added a custom res of 3840x1600 on the NVidia Control panel and it looks incredible. You only have to tweak the res once; after the initial setup every time you set the tv to 21:9 your PC will automatically switch to that custom res you created, so it’s no hassle really…
I'm waiting for 2nd or 3rd gen QD-OLED before I upgrade my 27" odyssey G7 , and specs wise I always thought "viewing angle" comparisons are pointless...I'm ALWAYS gonna be sitting directly in front of the monitor....
Viewing angle tests are sort of a relic of the TN era where the viewing angles were so bad that even like sitting at an angle with one arm resting on your arm rest was enough to shift colors on some particularly terrible TN panels. I guess now it’s for content sharing which who does that on a little monitor?
you would be surprised. on a big enough monitor, like the Neo G7/G8, even if you look dead center onto the screen, you can see color degradation in the corners, because you look at them from an angle. I can tell because I read your message on a Neo G7, which I will be sending back in a day or two.
@@aaronwinter7911 I wouldn't consider the neo g7 big...it's only 32"....not even widescreen, if it's that bad then yes I'd return it. now maybe like the G9 that's super widescreen I could see it, but for 99% of us it's a worthless metric lol.
Only reason i would and will buy Neo G7 when prices go down is they are perfect simracing monitors. Triple 32" monitors with this kind of motion clarity is very good to have and 32" size is optimal for simracing with triple screen setups.
Aaah... The AW3423DW... The quantum superposition phenomenon... It doesn't exist in this world... And yet it clearly does. I am clearly seeing it in front of my screen and hearing the person who personally touched it and experience it but yet again I can't find it anywhere in the world.

To remove the scanline issue, get an expensive dp cable, turn on the low input lag option, and basically make it the best monitor you can get at the moment.
The fight between the Alienware, and the C2 for me, came down to a multiple week shipping estimate for the alienware, and the C2 immediately available for pickup in a local store. I've had no regrets so far about picking up the C2, and find that I'm loving the extra vertical screen real estate that the C2 offers, even though I was previously a huge fan of ultrawides. My only complaint is that games at 16:9 tend to blow up the centre portion to be bigger, rather than ultrawides which feel more "zoomed out" due to having more space around the sides. What would be really cool is if I could run the C2 at 3840x1646, with the top and bottom blacked out, and get ultrawide performance for games. This works for movies of course, but games stretch the image and completely ruin the attempt. Ah well. It's still the most gorgeous display I've owned to date. I can't imagine anyone not being happy with a purchase of this (unless you really needed DP)
I run games at 3840x1620 with black bars on my C2 all the time, it works great to simulate an ultrawide. You just need the right settings, check the recommended settings guide on the OLED gaming subreddit.
You’re deff missing some tweaking on the NVidia panel and what not. I’m running most games on 21:9 3840x1600 and the experience is incredible. Not a big fan of 16:9 myself, Ultrawide is the best format for gaming hands down.
I think if the LG OLED came in 32" - 38" it would be the perfect choice, but because it doesn't, I think the Alienware is the current winner. I'm really looking forward to the next year or two when this tech becomes more widespread and fine tuned for monitors. The Alienware is outstanding, but there's clearly room to perfect it.
im not a huge fan of the alienware because of their strange subpixel arrangement leading to fuzzy and hazy text which is critical for productivity work. Not only that but because of its coating when light hits it it washes out blacks and makes them grey - neutralizing the benefits of OLED technology. Not to mention it's weak resolution and substandard brightness. For the price, the LG C2 is the best, but obviously doesnt work for people with smaller desks. But if youre spending over $1k on a monitor you should probably spend the same on a quality desk.
Imo Aienware is not the winner, as it's got the triangle rgb sub pixel layout that is sub optimal. It's got poor resolution given it's 1440p and 1440p is basically the new 1080p, especially for late 2022 and poor console compatibility (no hdmi 2.1, UW).
I have a combination of previous generations of two of these screens (48' C1 and 1440p 240hz G7) and I feel like it pretty much covers the entire gamut of experiences I could want. For daily use and high refresh gaming, G7 hits the spot, and for anything 4K, HDR, and even Ultrawide, the C1 handles it great. I think at a certain point I gave up trying to find my perfect monitor, since it seems like we are never gonna get a flat 16:9 ~27 inch 4k 120hz+ OLED with good HDR, which I would buy in a heartbeat (so long as its good).
We could get such a monitor in the next 2 years. But i was looking and hoping for my dream monitor for years now as well. The neo G8 is exactly what i wanted but ... it's samsung ... I wait for the g8 with QD-OLED. When that one has the same panel quality as the alienware one then it's an immediate buy for me
@@Lxcx311 Well here's something you may not be aware of. QD-OLED is Samsung patented technology. Even just general quantum dot color is a Samsung thing. It's similar to LG's Nano LED. So whenever you see a monitor from another brand stating quantum dot or nano LED tech now you know they're using a Samsung or LG panel.
@@gmaxsfoodfitness3035 i am aware of that. But i said it how i did because samsung oanels are good except in samsung monitors :p Like there are some MSI monitors with quantom dot that are nice but samsung always had problems with their monitors. So i am a bit worried that they screw up their QD-OLED monitor :)
One of the key issues with the Alienware is the presence of a fan, it is audible even at low RPM, when consuming content it's not an issue but when working can be distracting at times. I disagree with the "only for gaming" take on this monitor tho, the fringing is visible only in very specific circumstances, while the exceptional screen uniformity really helps with dark text editors (good luck using a Samsung VA for coding).
Just got mine in and it's honestly a deal breaker that I heard no one talking about before hand. It has two fans, one that makes a constant and annoying hum and another that surges and 'breaths' with a blowing fan noise in very sudden bursts. The tuning on both seems so bad it actually is boggling to me. It's such a shame, because I love the display but the noise is just too much for me.
I'm shopping for a new monitor so this content is great. I really don't want a curved display and the LG is too large for my setup. What flat HDR gaming monitors in the 27" or 32" size are coming before the end of the year? I think you mentioned there are a lot more options coming soon.
AOC has displays in 27" 175Hz 1440p, 240Hz 1440p and 34" 175Hz flat ultra-wide, all with a high-zone miniLED backlight and HDR1000 performance out right now. Then you have a bunch of g-sync ultimate displays coming, like 300Hz high zone 1440p displays coming from MSI, AOC and ViewSonic and 4K 32" 160Hz displays coming from Acer, Asus and HP.
A while ago you made a great video for using DisplayCAL to calibrate a variety of different panels. I'd love to know if you have any additional tips for calibrating QD-OLED panels using the same software and hardware.
Unfortunately, like high-refresh-rate gaming, I've been spoiled by OLED HDR. I don't think I can ever go back to using a display without HDR capability. In games with _proper_ HDR support it's basically a performance-free graphics upgrade AND one of the only means of "upgrading" (for lack of a better word) the graphics capability of a console. One additional note: all inputs on the C2 OLED are HDMI 2.1 (there are NO DisplayPort inputs.) This means that you will require a 30-series NVIDIA/60-series AMD GPU or better to get the full 4k@120Hz functionality. On the other hand, since it's a television, the C2 will play very nicely with consoles with its standard 16:9 aspect ratio and HDMI2.1 inputs.
I have a C1 and it’s stunning when paired up to my 3090 .. Even g-sync is working brilliantly . Their are a few issues with VRR and PC on the C2 apparently
@@laloreta798 I swear people have zero clue. 600 nits is dim and any VA or ips FALD panel in bright scenes looks no diff to oled at same nits apart from way brighter if doing 1000 nit plus on lcd. Dull is dull FFS. The same morons that say 60hz and 120hz on oled beats 240hz samsumg VA. No, no and every way no. I have oled, samsung VA 240, 1000 nit FALD ips and every res and type inbetween. The only time oled in HDR games beats FALD IPS and not even VA is in dark scene HDR which is a few scenes in games. VA 240hz HDR being bright is the best. Oled is still sample and shite and 60hz oled on a switch looks no better than a super fast lcd. Unless you own every type of screen you will get sucked into bullshite hype. I had a FALD ips tv once that cost a fortune and replaced it with a high end oled. It looked zero diff with SDR blu ray in the dark.
The C2 wins for me as it has a built in 21:9 Ultrawide mode, you get the best of both worlds for PC use if you have the desk setup to accommodate the 42" size.
Hey Tim, I have the LG C2, and I don't understand why you never go into details on using only part of the C2 screen. I usually use it using the built in 21:9 viewing mode, that makes the resolution 3840x1600. In this mode, it only uses 75% of the pixels, which means full screen peak brightness isn't limited as much as 100%. However, I also use 1400p with this screen, effectively turning from a 42" 4K monitor into a 28" 1440p OLED. In this mode it only uses 45% of the screen, effectively keeping the brightness consistent from small window to full screen. Other than text clarity from pixel density or WRGB layout, this makes the screen untoucable in my opinion in flexibility. When I boot a full screen 4K game, it uses the whole screen, and when I go back to windows it is 1440p with higher brightness, and for some games where ultrawide is preferable, it can do that as well. And really, the pixel density of 4K at 42" is 110 pixels per inch, which is actually higher than a 24" 1080p monitor. I highly recommend you explore these options on the LG C2 as they allow you to have several monitor sizes in one display with different characteristics.
In sdr, there's no abl, the whole screen is just under 200 nits at any window size. In hdr, you gain negligible 30 nits going from 100 to 70% window. This plus the almost instant abl (a lot quicker than on the C1) made any brightness drop in hdr almost unnoticeable for me. Also, sadly the built-in 21:9 aspect ratio has not been implemented well, it's limited to 2560x1080 (stretched). I like the 16:9, but if you prefer 21:9, custom resolution will be better. Don't get too hung up on the numbers - the nits dropping with window size. In real usage, 10% window is dispersed in many highlights. We're unlikely to hit above 30% in games, only if there's a cutscene with white background you might close to 100%.
@@DarkReturns1 turn on Game Mode. Bring up the full game mode settings, not the little bottom of the screen HUD. Go to Display tab, then scroll down to aspect ratio. It supports 16:9, 21:9, and 32:9.
I'm actually looking at all 4 of these monitors for an upcoming purchase. When it comes to monitors, price definitely relates to performance and my gigabyte g32qca isn't cutting it anymore. What I want to know is do you get scanlines and how crisp does it look? I'm not sure what questions to ask to get a comparison but my monitor currently is 1440p and it's 32 inch. Is there a big difference?
@@sellecksprodigy I personally have no scanlines and it seems to be the case for majority of people with the Neo G7. Otherwise the jump in image fedlity was huge for me due the 1080p screen I am coming from. If anything get the monitor from a place with a good return policy, give it a go and see how you like it.
I have to concur in that I'm really liking my Neo G7. I upgraded from the regular G7 in order to get a high refresh rate 4K monitor. I would just warn that you really need to have a decent GPU in order to get the most out of these monitors.
@@Talishar I have a 6900xt so I know I won't have a problem but I'm a frame chaser and I obviously want to play the most demanding titles and it seems 1440p hits the sweet spot. Otherwise, I'll be playing the gotta buy another gpu just to stay ahead of current games with a 4k display lol. It's amazing the difference in frames I get on 1440p compared to 4k. This is all without raytracing in the equation. Yes, I could be taking some serious heat from the PC community for having an AMD card but based on my benchmarks, the rasterization performance with my card is on par with a 3090. So 4k wouldn't be a problem.
@@sellecksprodigy Eh, this video is about the best high-definition gaming monitors around. It was supposed to be about 4K high refresh monitors but they threw in a 2K ultra-wide because they have a strong bias for that monitor. I'm liking 4K and having a GPU that easily works with it is great.
My Neo G7 ran 4 Hours , than black screen bug like normal G7. Only LED backlight is active, no picture anymore. Blooming was ok, Blacks looked amazing, good speed but the hefty curvature was pretty annoying. Maybe i would get used to it . But first Samsungs bad quality control has to send me a working unit. Also uniformity was not so good. On white screen the area around the screen on the edges were a bit dimmer (4cm around all edges)
@@icy1007 it’s curved, and it’s ultrawide. Otherwise, it’s the closest thing so far. (I cant have a curved diolay for graphic design work, and far too many games dont support ultrawide)
I'm waiting for the C2 to reach C1 pricing in my country, then i'll buy one. I'm done with the monitor market, lots of marketing bullshit and they can't even make something as good as a TV. People gaming on PC on a high end monitor have been getting a worse gaming experience than someone with a console and a TV.
Just give me a 16:9 OLED god damn.... I wish we get a 32" 144Hz+ (preferably 240Hz) 4k curved one. A series of 16:9 144Hz OLEDS in different sizes would sell so well, idk why samsung went with 21:9 which is still a niche market compared to 16:9. Also 3440x1440p is kinda srupid ar that price because people that buy that monitor most likely have a PC that can handle 4k pretty well. It kinda makes no sense to me. But at keast we get a real gaming OLED :D
Did you end up liking it? My only worries are the aggressive curve and blooming with local dimming enabled. Would love to know your thoughts.
@@sleepssL Blooming is unnoticeable when set to auto and the curve is very easy to enjoy, since you did not need to swivel your head to take things in.

HDR is seriously awesome and it'll be impossible for me to go back to an SDR-only setup (it's like a performance-free graphics upgrade - games with proper HDR support look absolutely *stunning* on an OLED)
One NEGATIVE I've found with my OLED is that it is NOT GREAT when playing games below 90FPS.
They're getting better every year and the new QD-OLED panels are about 20% brighter than last year's panels)
Also note that a _21:9 3440x1440 UW_ is roughly 26% more pixels than _16:9 2560x1440_ resolution and requires a good bit more horsepower to run at higher FPS. On the other hand, it's also roughly HALF the resolution of full _3840x2160 4k_.
When I buy a display I expect to get *AT LEAST* five good years out of it. I did a LOT of research before I purchased my C1 OLED in regards to burn-in, "future-proofing," etc and I'm extremely pleased with the purchase.
yes please! Am currently shopping for an ultrawide and would love Tim the Monitor Guru's thought on all the options out there.
@@erikhendrickson59 what about poor folks like me who have never had a monitor and have been gaming on laptop screens. Sad. I think a good approach is to buy a good trusty mid range and bang for buck fast IPS today and wait for 2-4 years for OLED to become mainstream.
they all pretty much use the same panels
I've been bouncing around youtube watching monitor videos and your channel clears the clutter. Fantastic videos, well done!
More great content! I'll jump into the OLED space as soon as someone makes a 4k, 27 or 32" 144Hz monitor.

@@eldenlord5326 :) Yes, it can be true for a lot of people. 32:9 will be even better and after working on it or playing on it, you won't go back to 16:9 or 21:9. It's really unbelievably immersive.
4K all the time. The text sharpness and clarity is massive improvement. After going 4K there is no going back.

Are you able to use hdr doing the custom resolution?

Got an update for us bud after 3 months?
@YoDaOne4Meee I have the c1 and its great for gaming. I could use it for office stuff but that's just not me.

There are plenty i people who say they dont have scanlines at 240Hz, it might be an early batch manufacturer defect.

I love the curve on the odyssey monitors. It’s awesome and helps fit a 32inch a bit better on my desk

Found an LG C2 brand new for under 1k USD after doing some searching around, and I couldn't be happier. Easily the best display I've ever used. I had a 165hz Dell S3220DGF before this and it feels almost as smooth despite the lower refresh rate.
could you share how you found such a deal?
@@jackieliu1232 Browsing ebay, surprisingly enough. It was right after Prime Week so I guess someone had some extra stock to get rid of.
The LG C2 is 999 euro in The Netherlands. these oled tv's are litterally the only tech that is cheaper here than in the states. Im so pondering it.

How could a TV be listed as 27 inch? Explain. Its not a monitor. Its a TV.
Got the Neo G7 for 750 USD, more than happy with it, really used to the curve at this point
I got the neo g7 on a black Friday sale. And I have no regrets. Amazing display.

@@RGAMEPLAYS123 scaling looks fine, if you adjust your color and contrast to your liking, you might not notice as much that you're at 1440p. But there's a difference.
How is the ABL dimming?
Can the SpyderX calibrate OLEDs?
I much prefer the 1000R curve of the Neo G8 I recently purchased, after I sold the LG C2 42 inch, since it did not have a curve, no display port and was simply to big for me to use comfortably.
The shitty Gsync module and fan noise are a problem with the Alienware.
Having a loud monitor would be way too annoying.
They need to drop the Gsync module so they can drop the active cooling.
Then drop the price $200 that the module adds on.
Then without the limitations of the shitty module, put HDMI 2.1 on.

Death Stranding and Cyberpunk both look unbelievable. The curve is a none issue as I sit fairly close. Hi @TravelDude Are you still happy with the G7 after 6 months? I'm considering buying it. I'll be switching from Dell S3220DGF - 32" 1440p 165 Hz curved VA - so I like this form factor, but my main problem is low resolution at only ~90 PPI, which I don't find good for working with text and multiple windows side by side.

You don't need custom resolution. It has 21:9 and 32:9 modes that can be enabled on the TV level.

I was looking for a video like this! tough choices
Have you tried integer scaling in the GPU driver settings?
You’re deff missing some tweaking on the NVidia panel and what not. I’m running most games on 21:9 3840x1600 and the experience is incredible. Not a big fan of 16:9 myself, Ultrawide is the best format for gaming hands down.
Oh, a monitor channel now? Instant subscribe
Great comparison video Tim!
But i said it how i did because samsung oanels are good except in samsung monitors :p
Like there are some MSI monitors with quantom dot that are nice but samsung always had problems with their monitors. So i am a bit worried that they screw up their QD-OLED monitor :)
I have a similar combo, and completely agree. This was the ideal setup for me.
Very detailed comparison. THank you.
No problems if you use a headset. When I work i have music playing anyways
we need a new videos like this for all the new 32 inch 4k QD-OLED W-OLED and Mini-LED monitors
Have u ever seen a curved one ?
@@bratosin1 yes

I have a CX for consoles, I just ordered the Alienware AW3423DW for my PC.
A while ago you made a great video for using DisplayCAL to calibrate a variety of different panels. I'd love to know if you have any additional tips for calibrating QD-OLED panels using the same software and hardware.
Still waiting for the PG42UQ. Want to see how good it is compared to the C2.
Yeah but 600 nits on small highlights is dim and very unimpressive. 1000 nits minimum for impact.
@@theoldpcgamer77 the near perfect blacks help with that. Just make sure to be in dim lit room
@@laloreta798
I swear people have zero clue.
@@theoldpcgamer77 absolute nonsense unless you want to sear your eyes. Because of infinite contrast on OLED high peak brightness is not as important.
Yeah i'm sure playing an rpg with static huds day after day on a small 1440p window won't F up the panel in anyway 🤣.
@@theoldpcgamer77 why would it mess up the panel? Seems an odd thing to suggest if u know anything about OLEDs
What is this built in 21:9 mode?? How do you do that? Custom resolution is the only thing I can think of
In sdr, there's no abl, the whole screen is just under 200 nits at any window size.
I've been looking forward to this!
Got the Neo G7 due to its size. Been loving it so far, if you can handle the curve and want a 32 inch monitor, I’d try it out.
32 inch oled at 144hz needs to happen and it needs to become popular so it gets cheaper.
Ideally, 1,000-1,200 usd in the next 3 years
The AW3423DW is a 34 inch OLED at 175Hz (at 8-bit w/ dithering) or 144Hz (at 10-bit).
@@icy1007 it’s curved, and it’s ultrawide. Otherwise, it’s the closest thing so far.
(I cant have a curved diolay for graphic design work, and far too many games dont support ultrawide)
Think I'll wait for the next gen LG 42 inch. But if a glossy 38 inch ultra wide drops I'll probably got for that.
I didn't believe I would like an ultra wide monitor until I tried one.
Same here, it made me never want to go back.
Tim please tell us when the Asus monitors using the 42" LG OLED panel are going to hit the market...
Please can you revisit the Neo G9 with the latest firmware.
Neo G9 has twice the zone density of the Neo G7.
Meh, the new G9 is coming soon apparently. 5k zones.
@@youtubevanced4900 cool, Original Neo G9 has 4096. You’d have to imagine diminishing returns too.
@@robertpatton172 oh I didn't know the current over had 5k zones as well.
THIS. Why is it so hard to get an OLED monitor in a standard form factor.
