Scott Ritter is a former Marine intelligence officer who served in the former Soviet Union, implementing arms control agreements, and on the staff of General Norman Schwartzkopf during the Gulf War, where he played a critical role in the hunt for Iraqi SCUD missiles. From 1991 until 1998, Mr. Ritter served as a Chief Inspector for the United Nations in Iraq, leading the search for Iraq’s proscribed weapons of mass destruction. Mr. Ritter was a vocal critic of the American decision to go to war with Iraq. His new book, Disarmament in the Time of Perestroika: Arms Control and the End of the Soviet Union, is his ninth.

Zelensky didn't try to prevent the conflict through diplomacy because he lacks honor and integrity.
In 2014 there was a coup. Soon after, there was a massacre in Odessa (dozens of people were burned alive). Ethnic Russians living in Ukraine were treated as subhuman. Their language and culture was being oppressed. A civil war broke out due to the rise in ethnic tensions. For 8 years the Ukrainian military was indiscriminately shelling civilians living in Donbas.
If Zelensky honored the Minsk agreement and pledged neutrality, none of this would have happened. The 8 year civil war would have ended and Donbas would have remained part of Ukraine. War is the ultimate failure of diplomacy.
Zelensky, Poroshenko, Merkel and Hollande admitted that Ukraine had no intention to honor the Minsk agreements.
Who didn't want peace? Who advised against the 2022 peace talks in April? Hint: someone visited Zelensky in Kiev at that time
Russia's national security was compromised once NATO began to expand eastwards. Russia clearly stated that Ukraine joining NATO was a red line (November 2021) and unfortunately this concern was never taken seriously. The Russians openly stated: if nothing changes, we will be forced to act in order to defend our national security. Enhancing the national security of one country at the expense of another is unacceptable. The Russians have legitimate security concerns.
20th September, 2021: Ukraine launched military drills with US and NATO.
NATO is not a defensive alliance. NATO illegally bombed Yugoslavia (a direct violation of the U.N. Charter).
We should never forget what they did to Libya, Afghanistan, Iraq etc.
Who blew up the pipeline causing an environmental disaster?
Zelensky banned all opposition and arrested a leading priest.
Zelensky tried to invoke article 5 under false pretenses. Remember the incident in Poland.
Ethnic Russians living in Ukraine were treated as subhuman. Their language and culture was being oppressed.
Poroshenko said, “Our children will go to schools and kindergartens-theirs will hide in the basements”.
Russians will never forget the 2014 Odessa massacre. The whole world needs to know about it.
Why was Denis Kireev eliminated? He was a member of Ukraine's negotiating team during the peace negotiations. He wanted to help his country.
Ukraine has a hit list. They target artists, journalists and ordinary citizens. Hundreds of children are on this list. 13 year old Faina Savenkova was placed on this list.
Pink Floyd's Roger Waters is on this list. Jimmy Dore (American stand-up comedian, podcaster) and Aaron Maté (Canadian writer and journalist) are on this list.
There is evidence that Ukrainian troops have been indiscriminately shelling civilians in Donbas (they used petal mines and targeted areas where there was no military presence).
The azov troops trapped in the azovstal steelworks in Mariupol used human shields. They refused to allow civilians to leave despite of humanitarian corridors being present.
Russia held a proposed cease fire in order for the civilians to leave, but azov would not allow the civilians to leave.
Ukraine has committed many acts of terrorism (car bombs and other forms of assassination). Darya Dugina (journalist) R.I.P.
The first terrorist attack on the Kerch bridge killed the truck driver and the individuals in the adjacent car (innocent civilian victims).
The second terrorist attack on the Kerch bridge killed two parents and severely injured their young daughter.
I have done a lot of research and it took me a long time to write this comment. I have stated a lot of facts and I have given my honest opinion.
I have provided a brief summary of events that took place. In order to explain this whole situation in great detail, a book would need to be written.
Hopefully someone will write an UNBIASED book, stating facts and allowing the readers to form their own judgments. Everything I said can be fact checked and verified.

The partition of Poland, which began in 1772, divided up the Kingdom of Poland among surrounding powers, including Russia, but the fact is this partition was never going to last. Poles never gave up their national identity or stopped efforts to reunify the country and put it back on the map of Europe. The Polish-Soviet war in 1920 offered an opportunity for Poland to reclaim territory that, following the Restoration, was still under Russian control. But as Ritter points out, both Poland and the Soviet Union were exhausted from war and neither was able to gain a definitive victory. The compromise that followed ceeded parts of Poland to Ukraine, but the Ukrainian Nazis realized the only way to keep that land was to clear it of all Poles, hence the two-year-long massacres of Poles in Volhynia and Eastern Galicia from 1943 to 1945, when the Soviet Army arrived and put an end to the slaughter.

Gary Kasparov - double traitor. First he betrayed Azerbaijan, whose late leader Heydar Aliyev (who held prominent positions in the Soviet power structure) helped Gary's career in chess a lot by actively supporting and promoting him during the Soviet times, (Gary being an Azeri Armenian) and then Gary spat (figuratively) at Azerbaijan. Then Gary betrayed his his adopted home, Russia, by betraying it as well.

It's false to say that the Soviet Union was just Russia and that, if you're Ukrainian, there's no difference between Soviet and Russian. Scott mentioned that hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians fought for Nazi Germany, but he failed to mention that MILLIONS of Ukrainians fought for the Soviet Red Army and Soviet partisans. Also, Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev was Ukrainian. The Soviet Union was not "Russian occupation" of non-Russian areas. That's not to say everything always went smoothly, but there were Soviet communists in ALL the Soviet republics, each of which made their own revolutions as part of the Great October Revolution. Ukrainian communists fought for Soviet power in the civil war. There were many Latvian communists, famous at the time, but forgotten nowadays because of the propaganda of the Latvian fascists and their German and American masters. Latvian communists made a revolution in Riga in 1917/18 but were pushed out by the Germans, and continued to fight for the revolution all over the Soviet Union, and returned home when the Soviet Union liberated Latvia in 1940. The antagonisms in the Soviet Union were not simply "Russians vs non-Russians", but COMMUNIST workers and peasants, versus bourgeoisie, landlords and fascists, in ALL the Soviet nations, both Russian and non-Russian. Let's not allow Baltic fascists and Ukrainian Nazis to control the narrative about Soviet history. All the Soviet nations had a rich revolutionary history and contribution which made up the tapestry of the great Soviet Union.

Scott concedes far too much to the Ukrainian Nationalists in allowing the identification of Russia with the Soviet Union. The Soviet power structure was disproportionately Ukrainian and surprisingly light on Russians.
It was the Soviet Union that tried to roll back the use of the Russian language in the Ukraine -- I've read complaints from citizens of Kiev from, I think, the 1920s about how bookshops in the city didn't stock books in the predominant language of the city, Russian, but only in the language of Galicia, a province hundreds of miles to the west.
Russians such as Solzhenitsyn viewed the Soviet Union as an explicitly anti-Russian occupation force. The Soviets were determined that their state should be the representative not of the Russian people but of an international ideology that was hostile to Russia's historical identity. So it privileged all non-Russians over ethnic Russians.

To help lend support to your comments, it is also important to know of the rarely mentioned fact of Lenin (the early Bolsheviks) having "created" a "Ukraine" out of parts which were never (and still aren't) a defined territory, people, or nation. This is the Lenin who left exile in Switzerland (was sent on his mission) with £10 million in gold and a further £10 Sterling to fund his merry little band of mass murdering "revolutionaries".
"The Ukraine is the wood we will throw on the stove of Russian revolt" (Lord Palmerston, 1854)
And as further proof of the explicit role of the international (and anti-Russia) nature of the Soviet project, one should also know of the systematic destruction of Orthodox churches and the mass murder of 10's of thousands of priests. Destroy a culture by destroying its base, its faith and its history.

With all due respect, Scott needs to go over the facts of the republics joining the Soviet Union. Bolsheviks didn’t occupy or re-occupy any country, the ideological foundations of the Soviet Union were very different from that of a Russian Empire, there was a principal of self-determination (what Lenin is blamed for now, since that was what allowed Ukrain to have the borders that are being disputed now) and that’s why Poland and Finland were not part of the Soviet Union, not that any side was tired but that Soviet Union wouldn’t force anybody to join (west Ukrainian is a different story since the SU needed time to prep for war and it helped). You can’t understand the logic of the SU without understanding the foundational principals, so i would recommend to read some Lenin:) for starters. SU was never a communist country, the communism was a goal, never reached, and the socialism wasn’t ideal, since the country was always fighting for its survival and that dictated a lot of moves. Anyway, it was a great country, way ahead of its time.

Poles got some minor territory in the carpthians but the soviets were not too picky as it closed a major front and there were dozens of others to deal with at the time
