Whenever I hear this story, I think that the Glysrike was so used genetically to everyone fearing them that when the human came along, he was curious not fearful so it took a form of a curious animal. And in the process found out humans don't fear them and can get companionship with humans in whatever form suits them best. So when the human is injured it healed and protected his friend as he knows humans may be the only people they can truly be with as a companion.
First off let me start by saying sorry for resurrecting a post from a year ago,and the short novel, but I just felt this irresistible urge to respond to this. I believe that you are partially right but wrong in the intentions that Glysrike focuses on, this story seems to explore the dangers of preconceptions and self fulfilling prophecies more so than the Glysrike being a sapient entity itself. From the story and from the Glysrike's Perspective in the story I am pretty sure in its natural state the Glysrike does not have that level of Self awareness or Ego, it seems very much restricted to the concepts of it exists and things around it exists, and that's it. It has no conception of "what it is" or "what its suppose to do" at all and is like a mirror of the intentions of those around it. It does not seem to have the capabilities to understand what has happened to it except for a very rudimentary set of "memories". I say this because of how the Glysrike it self describes its actions and the way it views the UPS around it, it responds how they expect it to and this is from the preconceived idea created at the first contact between the Glysrike and the UPS aliens. It became what they expected of it, it did not know what it was or what it was suppose to do to interact with them so it looked to the UPS members minds to find out what they expected the unknown entity to be and what it was going to do, and it found that it was seen as a potential threat. So with no concept of what threat was, it looked into the minds of the UPS aliens again for what they considered to be a threat and a form they associated with the concept of threat or danger and became that form. When it did that those around it that it was drawing from confirmed it was a threat and so that's what it became. So from then on they are continuously confirming it is a threat to them through subconscious bias and the preconceived idea "that it is a mindless monster and that assumes the form of your greatest fears and mercilessly kills everything around it". Every member of the UPS the Glysrike comes into contact with already has this Preconceived idea of what the Glysrike is and what its going to do, so it just simply does what is expected of it by the UPS. When Simeon is introduced to the Glysrike in the story, he did not know it existed so had no existing expectations or conception of what it was or what it does, it was also closed off from the minds of the UPS members, in this scenario it lacked a concept of what it is and what it is expected to do. So it did the same thing with Simeon as it did the first time it met the UPS, it searched for what Simeon expected it to be and expected it to do. Simeon expected to find a friend or companion, and since it had no frame of reference of what a Friend or Companion is it once again did the same thing as it did with the UPS it looked into Simeon's mind to find Simeon's concept of what a friend or companion is and a form Simeon associated with that concept. Once found the Glysrike took that form, a puppy, and Simeon's reaction and thoughts confirmed that it was a in fact a Friend and companion of Simeon's so thats what it became. I also thing that the Glysrike's self awareness and level of consciousness and thought complexity is also determined by the expectation of those its reading from. The UPS believe it to be mindless and dumb so it is, where as many people who love dogs believe them to be more intelligent, like a kid then an animal and this shows in the change in its thought pattern from referring to it's self and "this It" to " I " showing a marked and steep increase in self awareness and EGO. So this increase can possibly attributed to it healing Simeon, but I think it may be more related to my previous points of it simply doing whats expected of it by the person its reading. It takes the concept from the person and becomes it, so the concept of a companion or a friend generally means that you want to help and be near them, so when Simeon was dying the increased combination of Cognitive awareness and ability as well as it working under the concept of what a companion is suppose to do spurned it to save Simeon's life because that's what a friend or Companion is expected to do in that situation. The end of the story also supports this being the case as after giving a piece of its self to Simeon and freed itself from the containment room, The Glysrike then began receiving conflicting expectations and so it was conflicted on what it was suppose to be and settled on a compromise, Simeon wanted the Glysrike to go back to being a dog, but it couldn't entirely because the UPS was telling it was suppose to be a Horror or being of terror. So it did both, becoming a Hellhound with features meant to be terrifying while retaining the canine features. Ultimately I think the Glysrike doesn't really exist in the sense of itself identity and exists only as a reflection of those around it's expectations and the concepts they associated with those expectations, and nothing really more than that.

They pretty much went in thinking. “Alright, this alien is a predator that literally feeds on the fears of it’s target and becomes something more than capable of killing them. So it should be able to kill the human right?” What they failed to realize is the creature has far more depth than that. It does not become a terrifying predator because that’s what it is. Glory to the spinny rock! Also cute fish are cute, I liked when they came up to say hi. The story was also great! It's that the Glystrike imprinted on the thoughts of others, and was only hostile because it was assumed to be at first... with it's reputation tainting all further interactions up until then. There is an interesting sympathy there that one creature made hostile for the judgements made before meeting it, has now befriended another who seems likely to be in much the same situation.
i thought it was going to become another human personally. afterall the best monsters humanity comes up with are eather anamalistic humans or just stronger faster humans with or without super powers
Crazy apes! Everyone sees that thing , it sees its worst nightmare. Not that ape he sees a puppy , cause he's lonely and wants a friend to play with. Figures they'd abduct one who was crazy, even for its own crazy species. Fearless my tail! They were craping their suits in terror! The drone could practically see their fear chemicals fil the air. Then that idiot shot the ape! Have we not told you ,to leave the crazy apes alone? As for the Glyshrike...a psychic shapeshifter is not unique, though intelligent ones are rare and do not develop technologies that allow them to leave their home worlds. Still, in its natural habitat, its not dangerous. it just drifts around, feeding directly from the ambient energy field of the planet. If threatened though, it morphs to what you fear , hoping whatever threatens it is smart enough to go away. If the fools had not abducted it , they would still be alive. Then again, the same could be said for the ape. If they had not abducted the ape, none of this would have happened. Will you idiot children stop messing around with the crazy apes? I swear , you are almost as crazy as they are. Hmmm....a madness that can jump species ? I don't think anyone has looked into the possibility, yet. maybe if i start researching it, i can get transferred to another division? I need to look into that too. Maybe there is a way i can stop observing the antics of crazy species....

Poor stupid xenos. They have absolutely no idea what sort of hell* they’ve created for themselves. And if his combination with the Gryslike lets him read their fears he might become more and more Doom Slayer and less Simeon every time they attack him and “Puppy”. It ain’t gonna be pretty. I love it. *See what I did there? Gawd but I love the DOOM universe.
Reminds me of that scene in house of cards or something similar - agent is trying to intimidate a computer nerd, threatens to step on nerds Guinea pig. Right there I paused the show, turned to my roommate and said "if anyone threatens to hurt my pets like that, they have two options. Leave, or leave this apartment in a body bag."
A being powered by imagination and shaped by other's conceptions of its capabilities is brought into close contact with.. a human. Of course the first thing that's going to happen is pettings! So much bonding, joy, the sharing of goodness! Then the prejudiced ones shoot the human. I believe we all know this story.. we even know the sound track. And the quote.
Or, considering that humans have an abstracted mythological construct that represents the primal fear of everything that used to be our predators when we were a fledgling species on Earth, it could have dug into our primal fears and became a dragon. Though our modern culture would make us go, "SWEET! A DRAGON!"
One, two, three, altogether now....! _Oh, we'll feed it Love_ _We'll feed it Love_ _We'll give it everything we would want in return_ _So we'll feed it Love_ _We'll feed it Love,_ _And Joy, and Compassion, and Bliss, and Contentment_ _Wouldn't it be rude?_ _When we've met a new friend?_ _To offer it anything but our warmest of welcomes?_ _So we'll feed it Love!_ _Yes, we'll feed it Love!_ _As Love is the only thing that we would want in return!_
Does anyone know of more HFY stories like this? The moment that "it" realized that it was "friend" instead of a monster was my favorite moment of any HFY/HASO story I've read/ heard
I dunno, there will be scritches maybe? Also that's basically venom, or more exactly the klyntar (the species of the symbiotes.) They were made to conquer the universe but they learned about compassion and decided to form an order of righteous knights.
2:20 heh, I remember this guy, can't remember his name but he was (in)famous for razor blade sandwiches and eating an entire airplane...kinda silly to judge an entire species by one guy with a weird gimmick. Now I'm wondering what happened to this guy
But that is exactly how they judged everything. Everything was judged on the absolute maximum possible danger rating. They judged humans as dangerous based on the specific of could any human be dangerous. Considering our species? I'm surprised they didn't decide to Nuke it from orbit. Instead they gave us a pet.
10:35 Attacking directly right now would be a terrible idea. I predict the Glycerike would get Simeon's and the alien's thought mixed up, turning into a huge wolf to defend Simeon. What would happen after the battle is uncertain, but the Fearless squad would be decimated.

So far of all I heard, I like this one story the best. I would like to hear more about the glystrike and human relationship. This has potential to be a book worth putting into my library to read over and over again.
Human fears isolation more than eldritch horror, confused eldritch horror discovers human desire for companionship, eldritch horror takes form of companionship and becomes puppy, human immediately pack bonds with eldritch horror.
Stands to reason any alien species that has progressed into interstellar space travel will have in fact, due to living on board sterile, perfectly safe spacecraft for generation after generation lose all it's wits when it comes to surviving. We humans lose our wits when we live in a city and dont get chased by a bear every couple weeks.
Human pack bonding knows no bounds. The shapeshifter finally found another that didn't fear it and found a friend. The human was just curious about the new form and saw a potential friend, not another enemy.
A tear? Human evolution is the bond between Man and his Companions. ....Hunting companions. Herding companions. Companions sharing against the Dark and the Cold. "I shall not fear, thee art with me."
Hi! I am an excellent example of the human bond. A 'friend' jokingly said even a real pet rock was to much for me and gave me an imaginary pet rock. It is always in my thoughts and I love it. It's name is Kevin and I gave it an imaginary scarf so it wouldn't get cold. The 'friend' is long gone into history but Kevin and I will always be together. Just so you know, Kevin is mostly a smooth dark grey that looks like other rocks but he has a cute grey and red scarf and a cheeky demeanor. He likes being remembered and the warmth of my minds hands that cradle him. I will protect and love him for as long as I live. Bonded for life. I love my Kevin. 🌚🧣🖤. Each day my mind weaves strands of imagery colour into his scarf. A little bit of love in each strand to keep him warm.
@@amorphoussolid8512 Kevin sounds absolutely lovely, and I’m sending an extra mind-scarf to it ! As a gift =] it should be received in 2-3 business days =D
Almost but not quite entirely unlike the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Trall. A creature on the opposite end of course, but none the less similar. So stupid that it thinks if you cant see it, it cant see you. Keep your towel handy.
Boggarts... we have legends of those, and we know how to tame them and love them. 1st feed them honey. 2nd give pats 3rd love it to death. The opposite of fear, is love, something a being born of fear is starved of
Okay, after listening to a large number of these stories, I have a request for their authors. Please, for the love of whatever you hold holy, PICK A TENSE!! Write in the past tense, as is quite commonly done, or in the present tense, which is a little harder to pull off but can work - but choose ONE, don't swap randomly between them!
Also if anyone wants to know I was specifically thinking of the dog who uses a sword. Never played the game and can remember next to nothing about the dog but I do remember that it was protecting its master's sword and with the possibly giant hell dog and this man wrapped in armor I think it fits.
Having an alien Shapeshifter as your best friend sounds fucking awesome

There is an interesting sympathy there that one creature made hostile for the judgements made before meeting it, has now befriended another who seems likely to be in much the same situation.
Indeed.
To paraphrase an MGR reference, fear breeds fear. But in the end, it doesn't have to be this way.
I honestly thought the Glystrike was going to transfigure into a spider. I like this outcome much better.
The image of a man running around a white room being chased by a spider came to my mind too
i thought it was going to become another human personally. afterall the best monsters humanity comes up with are eather anamalistic humans or just stronger faster humans with or without super powers
I was equally expecting spider, mouse, or xenomorph.
Same
I was thinking clown
I want to hear more about dogs and cats in these stories. A human is scary; a human with a dog or car is REALLY scary.
I meant “cat”, not “car”.
@@tomhchappell car works too, you can do alot of damage with a car.
“Nobody hurts my car!!”

Ohhhh, yeah... especially an augmented cat. Alot of cats are d!cks, but occasionally one will come along that wields that a§holery like a frikkin' superpower. And if its augmented too boot? Xenos better hide... but it won't make any difference. 😼
have you seen what humans can do in a road rage?
thems aliens better be afraid of a car
Nope. There's only one choice.

I was expecting the glysrike to take the form of an ordinary spider and the human to kill it out of fear.
Or, considering that humans have an abstracted mythological construct that represents the primal fear of everything that used to be our predators when we were a fledgling species on Earth, it could have dug into our primal fears and became a dragon. Though our modern culture would make us go, "SWEET! A DRAGON!"

This seriously calls to mind the 'Deathworld' series by Harry Harrison. Excellently done story.
Michel Lotito.
German dude, passed in 2007
I was thinking of Crazy Earl from Borderlands 🤣🤣
10:35 Attacking directly right now would be a terrible idea.
I predict the Glycerike would get Simeon's and the alien's thought mixed up, turning into a huge wolf to defend Simeon. What would happen after the battle is uncertain, but the Fearless squad would be decimated.
The perspective word play for the shape shifter... that was wonderful.
Reminds me of that Doom Guy Isekai that you read awhile ago where he kidnapped a hellhound since it would survive better than Daisy
Which one was that? I need to re-listen.
@@doctorbright1065 I think it was literally called Doom Guy Isekai. Plugging Doom Guy in the search bar on his channel home should do it . It'll say like first 40k words or something
oh my god, that ending easter egg,it's referencing that thing you narrated before about doom slayer going into a different universe and having a hellhound because he felt lonely from killing demons all alone for ages.
Greetings, Mentlegent!
For the Rhythm that is Algo
Still not entirely sure WHY the rest of them feared it. Has to do with them being so uptight about being "polite" I guess
for a moment, i expected the Alien to read the humans mind and getting afraid of it xD
But this is much better :3 taming a nightmare-creature within minutes is so much human, that its wholesome xD
The purple UFOs are back in Argo's tank. They can't hide behind floating rocks. So ... all together ... WE SEE YOU!
Who's a good boy? Aggro Squirrel's a good boy, isn't he? Yes! Yes, he is!
This one was good. Imaginative.
Now all they need is another split and form a "kitty" 6 feet tall with saberteeth and same glowing eyes.
Need another part to this story. I wanna see how it ends
Sounds more like them simbiotes…. Venom is that you?
Living psychic nanites, he's a good boi too
Never underestimate the human ability to pack bond.
that was an AMAZING TWIST

Honestly I thought it was going to turn into a flying cockroach. But this… Is a lot better and very much 🥰
If space gas not fren, why fren shaped?

So far of all I heard, I like this one story the best. I would like to hear more about the glystrike and human relationship. This has potential to be a book worth putting into my library to read over and over again.
Human fears isolation more than eldritch horror, confused eldritch horror discovers human desire for companionship, eldritch horror takes form of companionship and becomes puppy, human immediately pack bonds with eldritch horror.
Interesting and well done story! I definitely didn't see it turning into a cute and friendly puppy.😄🐕 Definitely well plotted.👏👍🥇🏆
Dam if they find the species and befriend them you would have some super soldiers with two minds 🤣
Chuck Norris doesn’t need Twitter, he’s already following you.

2:37 Lmao the fish
Good job on the story
Another bit of awesome.
Wonderful!
I love this story
Sigh most of the aliens in these stories are of the too dumb to survive category.
Stands to reason any alien species that has progressed into interstellar space travel will have in fact, due to living on board sterile, perfectly safe spacecraft for generation after generation lose all it's wits when it comes to surviving. We humans lose our wits when we live in a city and dont get chased by a bear every couple weeks.
you rock dude! For The Algorithm!
Good story .
"PUPPY"
Got some serious doom vibes at the end of that story. Rip and tear, until it’s done…. The only thing they fear is you… cue the boss-music 😈
Ah. The guy who ate a car. That will be something to explain. >XD 2:17
I was hoping for a happy ending.
Damn they missed the part in human society where we pack bond with anything that has a pulse, huh ?
What about Rocky the Rock?

An alien that turns into and can do what you think it can, very interesting concept
You know somebody is going to think it can screw them. Goddamn rule 34.
2nd give pats
3rd love it to death.
The opposite of fear, is love, something a being born of fear is starved of
Love me, love my dog!
Man that was good
Then BFG Division kicks in from the biospeakers in the shapeshifting hellhound.

*BFG DIVISION INTENSIFIES*
Sounds like they just took the two most dangerous creatures in the universe and made them into one. I do not see this ending well for them.
Welcome to space dark souls
Only that guy became the boss.
Also if anyone wants to know I was specifically thinking of the dog who uses a sword. Never played the game and can remember next to nothing about the dog but I do remember that it was protecting its master's sword and with the possibly giant hell dog and this man wrapped in armor I think it fits.
I'm imagining it turned the human into Doomguy.
What else would "Clash with the Hellhound gimmick"?
