I am very inspired by your creativity and vision. A few months ago I had forgotten what your channel name was since you hadn't been recommended to me in a while, but I went through my thousand subscriptions (of mostly garbage) to find your channel again because, despite not having watched any of your content in half a year, I still vividly remembered scenes that stuck with me from your work. This video right here is why I searched you out. There's something about the spirit of creation that analytics or sales can remove. Not every piece of art needs to be denoted with a monetary value. I will watch whatever you do and in my own pursuits I will think of your attitude as something to make a facsimile of. Even if it is just a letter to your friend or something that struck you in the moment, I will watch it not just because of what you say but because you say it with your whole chest. I hope you never stop doing this, genuinely. Or that if you do, your next pursuit only fulfills you more and lets you say what you want with more pellucidity.
niche is a scam.. it's like getting a 9-5 as a creator. you're gonna burnout eventually. that's why i myself don't wanna limit my art to a niche! also great example of donald grover
I feel like you can get away with a "niche" to start, like if you are really good at FPS games or competitive games like starcraft or league of legends etc, games that "is fun to watch if the player does well" or you can do roguelikes and spend more time on the banter and other stuff (I have been watching Northernlion since like 2013 or so lol.) After you get a core audience you can try and split off either by making "side channels" or you could put everything on one channel, you can also use different platforms etc, but at the end of the day think of why people watch you. Do they watch you "for you" or do they watch you because you are good at x y z game and that is a bit of your content? It is different for everyone and there are streamers that i watch pretty much anything they watch and there are streamers that i watch their "specialty" So the nice thing is that it works either way. I do think focusing on a niche is great for building an audience though and after that you can branch off into other things.
Brendan, I came back to watch this again. This is like the fifth time I've watched this. As a RUclipsr this message really resonates with me. As you've said, we've got a more difficult road ahead of us than someone who chose a specific niche, but I believe in my heart that you speak the truth and it is the path worth following.
This is timely. I need to send this to my best friend, he's been struggling with this and is an artist getting some renown and success in his field, but he feels stifled by the industry and other things, and he's been considering youtubing (whatever he wants) all his passions and teaching (because he loves history and mythology). This was uplifting and inspiring to me and I don't even have any interest in content creation. Great video! r
You opened my eyes. I constantly feel this pressure to find a niche and having to stick to it. I lost my creative spirit in a sense. When I first made this channel, I told myself I wasn’t going to be a niche and I was going to make whatever I wanted. Thank you for reminding me 🙏🏽
it's crazy man, i've been having these exact same thoughts feelings and ideas towards """"""content""""" and how ridiculous it is that i have to fit in and conform when i feel it'd be a disrespect to my creative spirit to put it in a box. this video even hit closer to home as donald glover is probably my biggest inspiration as well and i too saw him perform recently (twice actually haha). i adore your mentality and cannot forward my support enough. keep doing you man, we need more true artists that seep through the cracks.
Thanks man I needed this. Donald glover is a huge inspiration and my channel is all over the place too but I know the right people will be attracted to it as I make more vids
This is 100% true, the road to creativity is extremely important above any fame, or attraction you may get. You should aim to express yourself, and influence others emotionally, yes. But if you're not genuinely creating what you want, you will always be dissatisfied. Keep up this mentality, I believe in you.
Hell yeah dude! Most of the RUclipsrs I'm subscribed to are smaller creators 30,000 and under. Whenever one of them say "I feel like I want to create X video but I'm not sure if it'll do well..let me know in the comments" I make sure to say at the beginning of the comment to let them know (if they see my comment) that this channel is YOUR channel, post whatever YOU want! My favorite drag queens Trixie Mattel and Katya are the hostesses of a series here on RUclips and at the beginning of every video they have a monolog and in that monolog Trixie says "This is our channel and not yours." Which I love! They obviously take ideas from comments but they don't let the audience rule their channel. Humans are too complex to "fit" in one niche.
Man I definitely needed a video like this. It’s very easy to get lost in the sauce and chasing these numbers and outward validation. I’d keep having these ideas that I think are great then overthink myself out of it because of all these “youtube gurus” telling me otherwise. This one of them ones fosho. Keep doing ya shit
1: i love childish gambino and im happy he inspired you to just create 2: well made video you got a new subscriber 3:literally the best concert experience ever and i hope he get well soon and i get to see him in the US AGAIN❤
Incredible video brother. As a beginner youtuber now, it's very tempting to dive deep into a niche but honestly, that's super boring and it costs a lot of my mental health. Doing whatever we want is the way and in time, the audience necessary to make a living out of this will come.
Sharing and getting attention for your work is a big part of creating thing, but it shouldnt be the end goal. You are probably on the right track if the process of creating feels fulfilling to you. Still not getting the numbers(attention) for something you care about will always sting.
This is kind of what I’m trying to do right now. I definitely have a niche but I don’t wanna do a format at all. It’s too much fun to try dumb silly stuff each time.
Just earned a subscriber man!!! But i do have to ask, what if putting all your videos on the same account gives people the "wrong idea" about you? What if someone doesnt like a certain aspect of who you are? Doesn't that scared you? Sorry, i'm an animator and sometimes i worry that my audience will dislike a certain aspect of me, so its hard to choose between posting only a part of my work or everything i make in the same place. Amazing work man
@@mysteriousmysteries75 Sometimes things have to get worse before they can get better Stepping outside of your audience's expectations of you will alienate them at first but eventually you'll find a new audience you wouldn't have otherwise reached (if you do it correctly). Or the audience you originally alienated will grow to respect you.
It's all about the niche and standing out. Virtually anyone has the capabilities of starting a podcast or show, etc. But, what would make you standout. To name a few, Double Toasted, Trash Theory, Dead End Hip Hop, Hip Hop Advocates, Drink Champs are unique in their own respective styles.
funny enough i did the same thing, 2 yrs ago, well maybe towards of the end of 2022 i started making music n then I jus kinda stopped n started a yt channel (not this one), i stopped like the start of this year but only made a channel this month. Its not the end for my music but its definitely a a long term break, one day I'll drop under a new name & see where that goes

The “doesn’t fit into a niche” guy.

You sound simular to Andrew from big mouth, besides that, I agree on the idea of to fuck whatever formula and just have fun and do it for you.
