It depends… Have some problems with sidewaves when I bought a raceboard so as soon as I’m able to paddle again I’ll probably get a larger fin than the Clan (that Infinity Europe/JLID sent with the board 2022) or a little larger one from Decathlon (wich is my main fin at the moment but enjoing the Clan when it is more flat water) or maybe I’ll just get an ER 14*26, but first healing from an injury…).

As I'm mostly paddling on lakes and rivers and like touring and cruising I always look for a good mix between tracking and maneuverability. On my "main board" I'm using the Indiana Hyperflow 8.5 "Racing" fin. It's called racing but the shape is more like a mix between a river and a touring fin. It's just about right for what I like to do. It's fast, tracks very well especially combined with the great flat shape of my board and you can also go fast if you like. They sell these in different sizes and also in carbon if you like but the PA (polyamid) version is allready super stiff and very durable so I would not go for carbon except if you're absolutely need to cut weight on your board.

@@EclipseEsp81 Hey mate, hope you're doing good. If you're looking for a versatile fin, have a look at the Indiana Hyperflow Fin. I don't know what you're looking for exactly but I have this one on my current main SUP (but I'm not a racer!) and I like it a lot. They have different sizes and material variants. The regular polymid version is super stiff so I don't need the carbon one. The regular one also has THE BEST mounting mechanism you've ever seen (except FCS maybe), you can't lose any plates or screws, no fiddling around just put it in, tighten, go and to take it off just unscrew and pull it back out - genious!

Thanks for the nice overview of fins Ethan! Maybe you mentioned it and I missed it but placement of the fin in the fin box also has a significant affect on board handling characteristics with pretty much every fin. If you have the fin all the way back in the box, the board tracks straighter for longer but does not turn as easily and when the fin is all the way to the front in the fin box, the opposite is true. I find it interesting to play around with placement to see which you like better. You may be surprised how much difference it makes when you move the same fin fore and aft in the fin box. Try it and see what you find!

Some SOL SUP's have an auto-retractable fin. The fin pivots upward when hitting a hard object.

I love the BP Ray fin. For getting distance paddles in, it helps stabilize the board better, allowing me to focus on my stroke technique and not worrying about feeling unstable on the board.

Thanks for the video! Do all the fins fit most paddle boards? I suspect tbe answer is no 🤣 but is there some way to know if your board can fit most fins? Thanks again and I looove your videos!

It does depend on the board brand and how their fin box is designed. Most boards use a US Fin box but some other brands use a different style. So, I recommend you make sure you know which style of fin box your board has to make sure you buy the correct fin for it.

Thank you for your videos! We feel that you are also passionate, for my part for several months...
I bought myself a good Starboard carbon paddle (€99! Promo!), and when I look at the shape of the blade, and when I look at the shape of the blades of other paddles, I find it narrow and long, nothing to see with a traditional "Ono Ava" and narrower than the modern ones...
If the blade is longer there is more leverage, but if it is narrow it goes in and out with less effort? What is the concept and recommended use?
I have the impression that just like the shape/size of the boards, the shape of the paddle blades must also be adapted to certain uses...
    Thanks !

Longer narrower blades are better for longer distance paddles as you focus on efficient paddle strokes fully burring the blade. They typically have a smaller surface area as well making them easier on your shoulders. The shorter fatter blades are better for sprinting as they can quickly grab the water while not having to be buried all the way. Hope that helps. 🤙🏼

New to paddleboarding. My board I recently bought has a large fin in the center and two smaller fins on the side. What does having three fins do compared to just having one single fin? Or is having three not good?

It will simply help you track straighter and depending on the type of SUP help you in the surf.

@ethanhuffsup Thank you. Hopefully, when I am confident enough and more experienced, I will take it out to the beach. Right now, though, I am just taking it around Oregon and Washington lakes.
