Just wanted to comment for those interested in the quartet. Their name is Rootstock Republic and they agreed to play with Violents and Monica Martin for this session only. They are separate groups with amazing talent and equally busy schedules.

We just drove through Baraboo yesterday, on our way back to Ohio from Minnesota. Thought of Monica and the boys from Phox. Hoping to inadvertently pass them on the highway. lol. I can't wait for them to get back together 🤞. The reason she sounds so great with violents and the others is because she would fit in anywhere. She has that kind of talent.
The creativity in Phox was phenomenal! Monica made that great band, incredible!! Thanks for that. Monica you really are one of a kind! ...cute too!

  • @michaelrossi752
    @michaelrossi752 7 лет назад +21

Something about just amazing vocal quality, insane beauty, and quirkiness that makes Monica unforgettable. Add on in one thing that gets missed alot - fantastic songwriting. I haven't connected quite with this on that level - but I'm wondering if Monica is the main writer - her songwriting on the Phox album is, to me, esoteric and connectable somewhere deep. Anyway, gotta get this album..just to add to my Monica closet shrine. haha!

    • @crazybabysittertwin
      @crazybabysittertwin 6 лет назад +3

All these songs were written by Larson. Monica even mentioned after the first song that she felt she should also clap because these weren't her songs.
That being said, I completely agree with everything you said. I adore her with PHOX because I love their musical arrangements and their harmonies are so overwhelmingly beautiful together, but seeing her perform these songs with Larson/Violents, her voice is so shy yet commanding at the same time. And there's a quality to her voice that no one else has. It's hard to put into words.

Found this project recently (happily) after being frustrated for lack of any new PHOX releases. Monica Martin's voice and lyrics move me deeply, and the collaboration between these two is really such a perfect match. Incidentally I love the acoustic arrangements of these songs, and they juxtapose beautifully with the more electronic (but equally lovely) production of the album cuts.

    Unraveling lyrics
I'm sinking ships, lips are loose
I can cope any way I choose
And I have not cried in three whole days
That was back in my sober phase
In your ivory tower, standing tall
You're watching me stumble through the halls
And you taught yourself to disconnect from your regret
And everything I live to forget
    [Chorus]
Wide-eyed wonder, where did you go?
    I'm unraveling, ooh
Pagan cynic, constant critic, friend to a foe
    I'm unraveling, ooh
    [Verse 2]
    Callous stare, face obtuse
You can leave any day you choose
I have not lied the past three days
My body lags, need to keep the pace
    In a place that's ours, white-washed walls
You're watching me stumble to a fall
'Cause you taught yourself to misdirect, to disconnect
From everything I live to forget
    [Chorus]
Wide-eyed wonder, where did you go?
    I'm unraveling, ooh
Pagan cynic, constant critic, friend to a foe
    I'm unraveling, ooh
    [Outro] (2x)
I much prefer you the way that I found you
And I hate who I am when I am around you
But you're far away and I need you close to me
A sad simple truth that's lost in the irony

Ms. Monica’s voice, beauty, and essence makes my mind do a happy dance. As I listen to her voice, I begin to day dream the most magnificent thoughts of dancing bare foot on a grassy hill; Surrounded by flowers and sunshine, accompanied by just enough of wind to carry the flowers’ scents and to keep sweat at bay...the image lifts me far from any care in the world! As you can see Ms. Monica, my first sight of you has me bugging! 😉☺️🤦🏽‍♂️ xoxo

Monica, we’re 11 minutes and I haven’t heard an introduction for you. Please know that I was willingly captured by you, your black girl magic and the sounds of Phox and I was drawn to this project because of that. Monica, please keep shining and moving us in the way that you naturally do. You and your voice matter!

I'm sinking ships, lips are loose
I can cope any way I choose
and I have not cried in three whole days
that was back in my sober phase
In your ivory tower, standing tall
you're watching me stumble through the halls
and you taught yourself to disconnect from your regret
and everything I live to forget
Wide-eyed wonder, where did you go?
    I'm unraveling
Pagan cynic, constant critic, friend to a foe
    I'm unraveling
    Callous stare, face obtuse
you can leave any day you choose
I have not lied the past three days
my body lags, need to keep the pace
    in a place that's ours, white-washed walls
you're watching me stumble to a fall
'cause you taught yourself to misdirect, to disconnect
from everything I live to forget
Wide-eyed wonder, where did you go?
    I'm unraveling
    Pagan…

Beau-ti-ful! NPR should release an album. Most of the artist are sound most impactful in their barest without the artificial antics:)
