its so sad that people will keep a pet for ages and then abandon them when they get to an older age. In my opinion, as soon as you bring a new pet home, they're a member of the family and they're here to stay. Thank you for giving this old boy a new home.

Some may have financial issues or in my case going homeless, I had to give up custody of my 8-11yr maincoon, 13 yr tabby cat. My 18-20 yr old maincoon, 5 days before it became a year later he died in my old home with my extended family. I have yet to get his ashes. As for the other two they have found homes, baby the #2 maincoon was rehomed with my cousin and ive never found out where my tabby is. People who purposely abandon older cats must have a reason or couldn't take care of it anymore.

In my case, i had to leave my cats behind because of a genocide that was happening to my community. I could only take one extra shirt & pant. Me and my family had to leave behind everything we ever owned, including our house. Not a day goes by when I dont think about my cats. But I cannot go back there cause that would mean death for me. So sometimes there are really hard reasons why people have to leave their pets behind.

My own baby kitty was abandoned by his last owner. I’m not sure how long he was there but the separation anxiety really showed how much trauma he had. First few days he barely slept. He would wake up at every tiny noise he heard. He was okay with pets but only here and there. As the months went on, he is full of trust and love. He still has separation anxiety out of fear I’ll leave him but with love from my mum, dad and brother, he has a loving family to help him heal the old wounds. He’s 2 now and it’s been 8 months of his new life. Seeing him everyday makes me smile. I have such a soft spot now for abandoned older cats and I only ever want to adopt abandoned cats in the future. Older cats have so much love in their little hearts.

My family's cat recently passed away due to a terminal, congenital heart disease where the walls of his heart thickened to the point there was almost no pumping volume. He was also an older cat when we adopted him, though the shelter lied about his age. We thought he was around 3 or 4 years. The vet who looked at him on his last hour estimated at least 7 or 8 based on the X-Ray, though his heart suggested he could be even older.
While he was already affectionate - opening up to us within a week after adoption - he became more so over his last month, wishing to stay with us as often as possible. In a sense, I guess he knew he was on his last leg and wished to spend as much of it as us before he suddenly collapsed.
We only had him for a little over a year, but it felt like a lifetime. In a sense, I suppose it was. The worst part of losing a pet is the sheer silence that follows. When we keep expecting that loving fluffball to greet us at the door or come running towards us when they hear us... Only wispy ghosts from our memories are what's left.
So please cherish every moment you have with Bepo. You don't know how much time he has, so make every day with him his best.

Yeah, I don’t have to imagine. I had a cat that did that to me. 2 years of steady food, water, shelter, he used to sit in my lap at night after work.
and one day he just up and left for no reason. He started hiding from me the last week he was there, and one day when I got home he had _squeezed_ his way out a slightly cracked window in the back.
I found him dead outside in some bushes far away from where I lived after a few weeks of searching.

i adopted an adult cat that was surrendered by previous owners. he was terrified of being in the shelter, especially since they tried to trim his claws right away and he ended up biting a volunteer.

My kitty is about 9-10, I went to a max capacity shelter and asked them for their least adoptable cat, and they showed me my little skrunkly old man. He was shaved all choppy and he had a lot of scarring from emergency surgery, he’s got a lot of medical problems and a lifelong disease.
I named him Biggie, full name Little Big Man. He is my everything. I live alone far away from family and I spend every free moment I have with him. He follows me everywhere, even when he’s cranky with me for giving him his meds. I’m autistic and I frequently have meltdowns, and even at my worst, he never runs/hisses/scratches/bites. He’s practically my little therapist.
He was neglected severely and was in a hoarders trailer for what I assume is all his life, and the shelter told me they didn’t even need to trap him, he just let them pick him up and carry him along.
Im glad adopting elderly cats is becoming a ‘trend’ now, they deserve the love.

Hes making biscuits!! You’re doing great, he seems very happy in his new home and him making biscuits shows how he thinks of you, or your scent, as comforting and it brings cats kneading instincts back. Another good sign is him showing his belly! Cats usually go for each others stomachs when fighting as its where almost all the major organs are, so much so they’ve adapted to have a primordial pouch which protects them. A cat rolling over and allowing you to pet their stomach means that they feel safe around you and trust you, i hope Bepo has a great life, thank you for adopting from a shelter! God bless you ☺️

Awww... he's gorgeous. When we moved to a new city I quickly found out there was a ginger, long haired "neighborhood" stray that was getting fed but no one wanted to take full responsibility for. I found him sleeping on an old couch we had on our 3 season porch after a pretty nasty fall thunder storm all wet, dirty, and just sad looking and immediately scooped him up. He was quarantined in the basement bathroom at first for many reasons, but he was happy enough on a bed of towels I put on the floor to take advantage of the radiant heating system. I'll never forget the looks of utter betrayal I got throughout a lengthy vet visit the next day. And nothing could have prepared me for the gorgeous and incredibly soft double coat that was hiding under all that muck. I named him Simba and he's currently taking up 3/4 of the queen size bed, completely oblivious to everything else.
I may have rescued him from living outside 5 1/2 years ago, but he has since literally saved my life.

My cat is 17 years old and we’ve had her her whole life. One thing about owning an older cat is they’re very smart and wise and definitely aren’t easy to trick. Treat them as you’d treat a friend or brother, understand their emotions, as they’re just as human as you. My cat understands me, whether it’s vocal words or something deeper. And I understand her. Owning a cat is truly a bond unlike anything.

My parents adopted two kittens a few years ago. They also adopted the kittens' mom, an older cat who hid away a lot when they brought her home. She only came out to eat and wouldn't let anyone touch her. Very slowly, she warmed up to everyone and though she's still kinda feral and skittish, she is much more social and will allow people pet her on rare occasion.

Seniors are the best. I rescued a beautiful Calico at 7 1/2 (considered a senior but what did I know) she died 2 years later from vaccine-related Cancer. Not my vet but the prior owner's. She was neglected & overweight and sad. They said she was trouble but I know they didn't want her because they had a toddler & we all know how harsh toddlers can be on Cats that don't like their tails pulled.(what Cat does?) She never gave me a hard day in her life. I miss her with every breath I take its painful. She loved me like no human ever did. She was the best. Up in Heaven waiting for me to join her someday. 😭💔

Now, almost 3 years later, he follows me everywhere and sleeps on me if I’m laying or sitting down. He even meows and scratches doors if he can’t get to me, or meows and cries for me if he can’t find me. He’s a goofball and I love him! I’m sure your new fluff ball will be just as great!!

    • @JustSaralius
      @JustSaralius Год назад +12

You don't know their story. They might have become seriously ill or had money problems or even passed away. Whatever the reason, giving a pet to a shelter is a selfless thing to do, compared to just abandoning them or keeping them in a situation where they are being neglected.
Not saying that there aren't assholes out there who treat animals like disposable toys, but those people don't often take the care to make sure the animal is looked after.
We mustn't judge and stigmatise giving up a pet for adoption. It's not an easy decision for most people and it's better that the animals needs are put first.
What we should try to prevent is irresponsible breeding, selling pets in shops and treating animals as fashionable possessions.

Got a 2yr old black cat we named Thakery Binx. Said shy on his papers, his original owner died and I think the relatives just put him in a room until they decided to take him to the shelter. Was sweet to pet in the cage, scratched the worker picking him up. My gut was burning so hit towards him and would not let me concentrate on other cats. I mean the pull towards him was so strong. When I took him home he spent weeks hiding. After treats and just going to him to give him attention he finally came out and wanted to be loved on. Had him since 12/11/23 he is such a snug bug and loves to be smothered and kisses. He also attached really close to my older cat named suneshine, I get help for my PTSD. I see Binx lay close and his head on sunshine sleeping a lot. He is so sweet and so glad he survived the psychos of Halloween

Last year me and my wife adopted a 10-12 year old senior cat from local shelter. From what we know the cat lost his home and ended up on the streets. He got into a car accident where he almost lost his front leg, but vets did everything to save it. He could put a pressure on his paw, but he didn’t run while living in the shelter. After a year our furry pirate is running around the apartment, playing with his ball and a tiny broom which he enjoys to bite. Very thankful and sweet ball of fur.

You are AMAZING!! I adopted a 12 year-old who was in rough shape. He was missing an ear and part of the other and only weighed 7 pounds. He was found outside in a blizzard in Minnesota in December. No one wanted him so he stayed in the shelter for a year, and he was very sick when I finally adopted him. His digestive system was messed up and he was lethargic. After a few vet few vet visits and lots of love, he got better. He started playing with his toys, too. He's now 23 and weighs 13 pounds... the little fatty! I love him so much. ❤
