This is a bizzare feeling but I’m already getting the speed up and the fact I’m even able to sound 1% like Tosin Abasi is enough for me to know I can get to 5-10% of sounding like him. Exceptionally informative video!!!
That's amazing to hear! Glad this was useful. I'm currently working on a new Selective Picking video with several etudes utilizing the technique. I think it'll be very useful for your journey!
playing for 20 years, wasn't practicing guitar for a while your videos really got me back into it! practicing 3 hours a day and its going amazing thank you brother
Great video, will be keeping an eye out for a full composition for the third example👌. I though am an amateur and keep getting this fuzzy sound especially on the lower strings, so any advice would be appreciated.
I keep coming back to this video. Really enjoy your teaching style and the way you make techniques accessible. Would be interested to learn about the clean Axe FX preset you are using.
Really appreciate that man. Thanks a ton! I actually do plan on putting some videos together about the Axe FX and creating tones/tips and tricks, so stay tuned for that!
Haha, I actually preferred the sound of the third example at the slower tempo. The faster tempo is impressive, but that groove when it was slower... *chef's kiss*
Thank you for the lesson! Tell me, how much is compression or string gauge part of the sound? I fell like turning up my compressor adds more to the sound than 1h of practice. :-P Just kidding, I´m just wondering how to get those hammer ons as even as possible though out all strings. \m/
Thanks so much. Honestly it's pretty simple. Just make sure to use single coils on a low-mid gain amp setting (edge of breakup) and you'll be on the right track. Hope this helps!
Thanks Bro, You have helped me a lot and I don't know you... I hope soon to integrate this technique into my way of playing. I already bought your pack of 3 licks and I will practice them lml
Great lesson criminally under viewed, love your guitar you should do demo/review of it, that headstock is crazy, will attempt to master the free ones and be back to purchase the other one ;)
Hey man! Really appreciate the kind words. I think you've convinced me to put out a demo/review of my guitar! It's a Spearfish from Rick Toone, lots of cool features on this instrument. Take care!
This is awesome, thanks for putting it together and explaining it simply. Maybe you could do one on tapping with right hand sometime? Sounds very cool man!
Hey man! Thanks so much. Yes, search Gabriel Levi on any streaming service and you'll find me. Just released a new track entitled "Introduction" a few weeks back. Hope you dig!
thank you for these exercises - super cool! are you palm muting every note while selective picking? just the "picked" notes? wasn't sure about that part
Setup-wise, do you have a compressor in your chain to make the notes easier to sound-out or are you just really emphasising the hammer-ons and pulloffs?
Question! What are the musical benefits of doing this with a pick instead of your fingers? I found the same effect could be achieved by plucking twice/thrice with either one finger or two alternating fingers and that's way easier for me than using a pick. Will there by some upper speed boundary I wouldn't encounter with a pick or would the pick give me a more consistent sound at those speeds? (I'm still slow, but consistent, and it sounds nice). I think it's worth learning just for the challenge but I was wondering if there were other benefits I didn't notice.
For one there's a clear difference in tone when using a pick vs fingers. I think the combination of fingers, pick & hammers from nowhere creates a unique mix of timbres that you wouldn't be able to achieve through fingers alone. I also think you'll have a difficult time with accuracy using fingers only at higher speeds. But if you can achieve the same effect using fingers only: more power to you!
Honestly I heard tosin do this and I just thought it was another weird technique that I was not really interested in, but then I saw the future with that arpeggio section in Polyhia's "Playing God" and knew I was fucked. Thanks for the tutorial.
Keep practicing. This probably won’t come as quick as you want it, especially if you’re not used to producing notes with the left hand only. Try playing all of your scales using only the left hand to develop strength.
@@gabriel_levi I think it’s a problem with the guitar. The hammer ons come off great if I’m not palm muting, but the second I start palm muting, nothing.
Hammer ons from nowhere + selectively picked/plucked notes? I would argue most guitarists do not this, let alone create compositions based off of this specific approach. I also come from a background of playing professionally as opposed to just writing/listening to Prog, so in my experience no, most guitarists do not utilize this intuitively.

I think my next video will focus on hybrid picking. Thanks so much for the feedback!

Sounds interesting, good job friend.
Thanks so much man!
Thank you very much!

Awesome playing man ! And that Rick Toone tho 🔥
Thanks so much!
So your blues based exercise is my new favorite. Gonna test it out on some other unlikely candidates
Finalmente entendi essa técnica, obrigado!
This is a great lesson.
Can you do a video talking about your tone setup for selective picking?
Thanks so much. Honestly it's pretty simple. Just make sure to use single coils on a low-mid gain amp setting (edge of breakup) and you'll be on the right track. Hope this helps!

Great video, thank you. Maybe some addition of right hand tapping on this may be the subject of the next tutorial. Just an idea..

What kind of guitar is that? Looks like a Rick Toone design.

squeaky clean playing my dude
It sounds almost like a delay but it’s a wicked technique to play with
It's so true! I often get asked if I'm using delay. 😂 Thank you for watching!

Spearfish from Rick Toone.
SELCT PLUS HIBRYD PICKING
Hybrid picking is a form of picking so it definitely applies to this technique. It gives you a lot more options!
Im not good enough for selective picking, just here for that guitar

What is that guitar? o_o
Hey! In this video I'm using my 22-fret Spearfish guitar built by Rick Toone.

wtf is that neck
I mean headstock xD
@@josesimao8254 HAHA! It's Rick Toone's Element neck design. Machined out of aircraft-grade aluminum. It's amazing!
