Everybody talks about how great the 60s were for music and then when you go back and see the absolute horrifying depths of the novelty songs from that era, really makes you rethink a lot of things in life.

    • @mistymu8154

Every decade has some terrible music. I think we tend to look back on the past with rose tinted glasses sometimes as people tend to only remember all the best stuff that came from the respective decades.

    • @edgustafson
      @edgustafson 2 года назад +6

I've been saying this for years. Every decade has a bunch of garbage music. The crappy stuff from the 60s and 70s (or whatever decade you think is great) just got lost to time. No one's devoting any time to Ray Stevens or Terry Jacks anymore, so people just assume it was all Beatles, Stones, and Zeppelin back then.

Great list guys! I agree with nearly everything on the list. The only disagreement I have is that “Margaritaville” and Jimmy Buffet in general has no business being on a worst songs list in my opinion. It’s not a perfect song at all, but it’s a fun, inoffensive peace of beach rock.

I came for Joe using "Corey Feldman" and "artistic integrity" in the same sentence..... And stayed for all 3 of you talking about the Boston song. Not exactly the deepest and most nuanced assessment of the situation of 'the undocumented', it's true, and given a politically correct panel who manage to make a harmless if mildly annoying song like "Seven Little Girls..."× sound like Jimmy Saville's personal anthem, I'm surprised it wasn't singled out for a kicking here; but it's actually not a bad song _at all,_ musically, (and this from a group who are, to say the least, highly inconsistent in that department), and I think it's unironically, if ham - fistedly, actually trying to take the side of the illegal immigrant, in much the same way as Phil Collins 'takes the side' of the homeless a few years later, with "Another Day in Paradise" - it's not like he's taking the Mickey or anything, it's just cringey as hell coming from a millionaire!
×If one is going to hate on "Seven Little Girls..." surely the version by '90'/00’s Eurodisco act Bombalurina with professionally annoying British novelty act Timmy Mallet has *got* to be the one to single out, _surely!_

Wasn’t sure that “bad songs” would match up to 2021’s March badness of the worst albums…..but then you give us “American Reckoning” from Bon Bon Jovi (or whatever the frick his name is) and boy oh boy it’s incredible, in all the worst ways possible. I listened to it twice through You Tube. First time with the official lyric video (and yep, it’s twice as bad when you’re listening to and reading those lines) and second time was a video of just Jon Joe Bovi 🤷‍♂️ with acoustic guitar and yes it takes on yet another level of badness. So once again, bravo TLM. It’s obviously going to get my vote and hopefully will last the distance, although it does have some very stiff competition. Looking forward to Round 2 👍

I take no particular pleasure in once again agreeing with Kramzer. However, it was a real delight to listen to his verbal demolition of Hey Soul Sister. His skewering of the simultaneously pretentious and cynical mentality behind that wretched, affected abomination of a song is 100% accurate. Personally, I despise Train and all who sail in her. They're worse than Passenger, and that's saying something.

When they decided not to put it on the album (over "Student Demonstration Time," mind you), Jacks decided to take it and record his own version two years later in 73. To think there's an alternate universe where that was a #1 hit for the Beach Boys...

My dad was a Jimmy Buffett van - and ,of course, when ever I hear him my dad comes to mind. Seven Little girls is a strange tale. My mom , my sister and I used to sing it in the car. My Dad’s name is Fred and mine also. I thought for years that my mom made this song up. Years later , long after she passed away at a young age, I heard it on the car radio and I had to pull over. I reached Paul Evans online and told him that this song will be forever linked to my mom . He got a kick out of it. Incidentally, it never dawned on my that this was anything inappropriate. It’s just a song that evokes a great memory- that’s the power of music. Hope it doesn’t win.

Based solely on single listens of each of next round's contestants, my ideal winners for next round would be
    "Ahab the Arab",
"Seven Little Girls Sitting in the Backseat",
    "Rice & Curry",
    "Ew!",
    "Hey, Soul Sister",
"Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue",
    "Bollywood",
    and "Summer of Love".
Honorable mentions to "Red Dress" and "All Summer Long"; if it weren't for the former being put against lazy racism and the latter against sinister- yet pathetically gutless- pandering, they would have been easy winners😄
The only disagreement I have with this round is despite how hilariously misguided and myopic it is in the deliverance of its message, "Ebony & Ivory" isn't THAT bad. Like one of y'all brought up, it would certainly be a lot worse if it wasn't helmed by two of commercial music's best musicians; like, I could easily just ignore the lyrics and just vibe with those chord changes and modulations if I really wanted to. Personally, I also just deem monotonous jingoism to be worse than clumsy anti-racism (though if I'm being completely honest, I don't find either of those songs to be strong contenders in this tournament, anyways).
Other than that, I pretty much agree with- or at least understand- where y'all are coming from! I'm excited to see how March Badness turns out!❤

Yeah, I like the song. I can see why others see it as lame, but it’s Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder, I just hate to see them voted this way. I think the melody it’s quite nice and they were very genuine in their sentiments. Lennon is probably rolling in his grave, though lol

There is a song that is not terrible, but it is just weird --- "I Love Onions". Susan Christie, 1967. It's just funny to me over 50 years later. The only song ever written about onions, featuring a kazoo and really goofy backup vocals. She is still active in Chicago's folk scene, I hear.
The song "The Eggplant That Ate Chicago" is way worse... There you have it, songs about eggplant and onions.

Bracket busted! My 70s bias had that AM radio standard 'Seasons In The Sun' going to the title game. Jason was spot on...just like 'You Light Up My Life' you couldn't avoid that Terry Jacks single back in the day. Torture. Great vid gents! Most enjoyable...

I think your age and environment can have a big influence on how strongly you hate a song. I think I was 6 when 'Seasons in the Sun' was out and it reminds me of a sunny summer's days as a kid. Luckily, being British it wasn't really getting played anywhere in the late '70s that I was aware of, and this was the time when I was starting to develop my own tastes and I probably would have got sick of it if it had been being played. If I had been 5 or 6 years older I probably would have hated it from when it was out.

Best-Margaritaville-I don't understand the hate really. I'm not a fan of Buffett at all,but don't ever remember this being hated to such a degree. It's harmless at worst.
Worst-We Built This City-sorry Jason and Joe,this was an affront the first time I heard it when it came out, so stale and safe with that horrendous 80's production. Cant believe this same band did Volunteers some 15-20 years earlier. The only song that I know that matches it's wretchedness was not on your list-The Final Countdown by Europe

I like "Telephone Man". It's just a funny song with some classic 70's double entendres. Her follow up to that song was "Peter the Meter Reader", no joke. Nothing wrong with "Margaritaville" either IMHO. There are definitely worse tunes out there than "We Built This City", even just in Starship's own catalogue. That said, wow that Boston song is just sad. I couldn't get through "Red Dress" in its entirety either. Love your comments about the Kid Rock and Toby Keith tunes. Bon Jovi has been trying to be like Bruce Springsteen off and on his entire career and has failed miserably, I can't even bring myself to listen to that song. I hope "Hey Soul Sister" makes it all the way to the top, God that song is rubbish. Looking forward to the rest of this series.

Of the songs I think the Train song is truly bad, bad. Some of the others may not be all that fair to call 'bad'. Because with some it may be relative to an era, and changes in pop culture; others were intended to be a joke; and others like "Ebony' are actually pretty clever. Real nominees should come from someone who ought to know better. Like - are we really expecting anything smarter from Kid Rock, or Bizkit? I have a feeling that Boston song will go far in this bracket. This is always a fun series.
