Terry Jacks served as a producer for one session with the Beach Boys when they recorded their initial version of "Seasons in the Sun" in 1971 during the "Surf's Up" sessions: ruclips.net/video/pHRTAtrwjuM/видео.html When they decided not to put it on the album (over "Student Demonstration Time," mind you), Jacks decided to take it and record his own version two years later in 73. To think there's an alternate universe where that was a #1 hit for the Beach Boys...
I adore The Beach Boys, but Student Demonstration Time is horrible. It’s about a mass shooting but has upbeat 12 bar blues rock instrumentation. One of the most insensitive songs ever.
I saw the title of this video, rolled my eyes and ALMOST moved right along. I'm so glad I watched. It was extremely enjoyable and entertaining. Lots of laughs. My vote goes to Jimmy Fallon all the way. It's detestable.
I really do not mind Creed, Nickelback and Train. I have always been a sucker for a simple, catchy pop/rock song and feel they get unfairly criticised in the cultural zeitgeist, along with some others like Coldplay. All those other songs though are bad though.
Um? No. They deserve the hate. There’s a difference, a LINE, between songs being simple and catchy pop and songs being absolutely hollow with no life or artistic integrity to them whatsoever, which is what those bands are.
I finally had to listen to Love, Live, Hope after you guys continuous ragging. Its rather STUNNING that a band like Boston can make an album that sounds like such an amateur production. Sounds more like a second rate Boston sounding band making their first album.
I wish I'd been aware of this earlier. I'd nominate "Nuclear Attack" by Greg Lake. "You may never come back from a nuclear attack." Classic. Eat your heart out Bob Dylan.
When my son (now 24) was a kid, he learned a version of "Who Let the Dogs Out" from a kid on his bus. In this version, dogs, cats, and chickens were let out, with the appropriate animal sounds. That version was a lot better than the "real" version.
@@Vanessa.P :) It is! There might have been more to it; I'm guessing they could probably keep the song going as long as kids could come up with animal sounds to make.
You didn’t run across “Run Joey Run,” by David Gettis from 1975? I hate, hate, hated that song for years. Although I did find out about 5 years ago that Gettis said it was supposed to be a spoof of the, “Daddy, don’t kill Johnny, I really love him,” genre from the late 1950’s and early 1960’s. If so, maybe I’ll give him a break. All Summer Long was a great choice.
If you guys ever do a tournament of bad songs that we've all heard (say, songs that have made the Top 40), please include Heartache Tonight by the The Eagles. I might drop a baby running to go turn that shit off. As far as this tournament goes, I thankfully haven't heard much, but Photograph is extra egregious, as is Hey Soul Sister. Looking forward to the badness.
So many! But 'Nikita' by the otherwise legendary Elton John is my choice. 'Heartache Tonight' has the clunkiest, most contrived drum beat of all time. Ugh!
20:35 😆 Kinko The Clown, what the hell is that????? Sorry, can’t help myself lol!! I’m actually quite surprised Maroon 5 isn’t in here somewhere. Move Like Jagger?
Also I will agree with Jason... Other than the term "Achy Breaky" it's not that bad of a song... Hokey and trite yes but not abysmal. "Go Away, Little Girl" is a full on assault on the eardrums.
Ballad of the Green Berets really stinks, considering the song and movie dropped during the Vietnam War. Seasons In the Sun has made people cry at a disco.
I’m with you, Joe, don’t want to see Paul and Stevie “hurt”. I don’t think Ebony and Ivory is a bad song, many are defending it. And it’s losing, yay😁. Now I’m going to celebrate by listening to it on Spotify and watching the awesome music video😎
Well the matchup of Margaritaville and Seven Little Girls was a tough one for me- I couldn’t pick either one. My dad was a Jimmy Buffett van - and ,of course, when ever I hear him my dad comes to mind. Seven Little girls is a strange tale. My mom , my sister and I used to sing it in the car. My Dad’s name is Fred and mine also. I thought for years that my mom made this song up. Years later , long after she passed away at a young age, I heard it on the car radio and I had to pull over. I reached Paul Evans online and told him that this song will be forever linked to my mom . He got a kick out of it. Incidentally, it never dawned on my that this was anything inappropriate. It’s just a song that evokes a great memory- that’s the power of music. Hope it doesn’t win.
Based solely on single listens of each of next round's contestants, my ideal winners for next round would be "Ahab the Arab", "Seven Little Girls Sitting in the Backseat", "Rice & Curry", "Ew!", "Hey, Soul Sister", "Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue", "Bollywood", and "Summer of Love". Honorable mentions to "Red Dress" and "All Summer Long"; if it weren't for the former being put against lazy racism and the latter against sinister- yet pathetically gutless- pandering, they would have been easy winners😄 The only disagreement I have with this round is despite how hilariously misguided and myopic it is in the deliverance of its message, "Ebony & Ivory" isn't THAT bad. Like one of y'all brought up, it would certainly be a lot worse if it wasn't helmed by two of commercial music's best musicians; like, I could easily just ignore the lyrics and just vibe with those chord changes and modulations if I really wanted to. Personally, I also just deem monotonous jingoism to be worse than clumsy anti-racism (though if I'm being completely honest, I don't find either of those songs to be strong contenders in this tournament, anyways). Other than that, I pretty much agree with- or at least understand- where y'all are coming from! I'm excited to see how March Badness turns out!❤
It never occurred to me to think "Ebony and Ivory" was a bad song when it came on the radio when I was a kid. I don't think it seemed so "ham-fisted" back then.
Well guys, I still hope Limp Bizkit’s Behind Blue Eyes-cover will win. I mean, just for the record… sitting here playing The Who’s amazing ‘30 Years Of Maximum RnB’-box set and it just came on, and I thought… you know, man… it just doesn’t compare… it simply isn’t in the same stratosphere, I mean… WTF were Limp Bizkit thinking…!? I mean, COME THE F*** ON, MAN!!!!! 👎
Yeah, I like the song. I can see why others see it as lame, but it’s Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder, I just hate to see them voted this way. I think the melody it’s quite nice and they were very genuine in their sentiments. Lennon is probably rolling in his grave, though lol
This is great... it sure beats watching the news. Thank you for your great channel/website. There is a song that is not terrible, but it is just weird --- "I Love Onions". Susan Christie, 1967. It's just funny to me over 50 years later. The only song ever written about onions, featuring a kazoo and really goofy backup vocals. She is still active in Chicago's folk scene, I hear. The song "The Eggplant That Ate Chicago" is way worse... There you have it, songs about eggplant and onions.
I considered it for worst of the year when I was on my streak of choosing songs about vegetables, but maybe it didn’t quite make top 40. Can’t remember why I didn’t go with it.
ha also one of Pat Finnerty's Stinkers (All Summer Long) - you need to rename that online lists region to Pat's Stinkers: ruclips.net/video/u8FAbjjB48A/видео.html
Bracket busted! My 70s bias had that AM radio standard 'Seasons In The Sun' going to the title game. Jason was spot on...just like 'You Light Up My Life' you couldn't avoid that Terry Jacks single back in the day. Torture. Great vid gents! Most enjoyable...
I think your age and environment can have a big influence on how strongly you hate a song. I think I was 6 when 'Seasons in the Sun' was out and it reminds me of a sunny summer's days as a kid. Luckily, being British it wasn't really getting played anywhere in the late '70s that I was aware of, and this was the time when I was starting to develop my own tastes and I probably would have got sick of it if it had been being played. If I had been 5 or 6 years older I probably would have hated it from when it was out.
Of the songs I know on this list; Best-Margaritaville-I don't understand the hate really. I'm not a fan of Buffett at all,but don't ever remember this being hated to such a degree. It's harmless at worst. Worst-We Built This City-sorry Jason and Joe,this was an affront the first time I heard it when it came out, so stale and safe with that horrendous 80's production. Cant believe this same band did Volunteers some 15-20 years earlier. The only song that I know that matches it's wretchedness was not on your list-The Final Countdown by Europe
I like "Telephone Man". It's just a funny song with some classic 70's double entendres. Her follow up to that song was "Peter the Meter Reader", no joke. Nothing wrong with "Margaritaville" either IMHO. There are definitely worse tunes out there than "We Built This City", even just in Starship's own catalogue. That said, wow that Boston song is just sad. I couldn't get through "Red Dress" in its entirety either. Love your comments about the Kid Rock and Toby Keith tunes. Bon Jovi has been trying to be like Bruce Springsteen off and on his entire career and has failed miserably, I can't even bring myself to listen to that song. I hope "Hey Soul Sister" makes it all the way to the top, God that song is rubbish. Looking forward to the rest of this series.
Of the songs I think the Train song is truly bad, bad. Some of the others may not be all that fair to call 'bad'. Because with some it may be relative to an era, and changes in pop culture; others were intended to be a joke; and others like "Ebony' are actually pretty clever. Real nominees should come from someone who ought to know better. Like - are we really expecting anything smarter from Kid Rock, or Bizkit? I have a feeling that Boston song will go far in this bracket. This is always a fun series.
In Sweden Dr. Bombays song was a huge hit amongst kids! One of those summer-hits that someone made lots of money from. He actually had quite a few songs which all became popular. Sort of a kids version / less talented Weird Al Yankovic!
I don’t understand how Kevin Federline’s song PopoZão didn’t make it? It was panned by critics so it was left off his album Playing with Fire. That album is considered the worst of all-time.
You ever check out the old black n white video of that 7 Little Girls song? Ha ha! At one point it looks like one of the 7 girl puppets is going down on the Fred puppet! Very creepy! LOL
"Telephone Man" is infinitely better than "Popcorn." Hell, it's better than most pop hits released since the '80s, which were, ironically, probably influenced by Hot Butter.
Red Dress: never heard it before, but now I'm obsessed. Can't stop laughing how bad it is. If ever there'll be a remake of Mars Attack, that's the song.
“You never know where you will be assaulted by Hey Soul Sister” very true
Thanks a lot. I've been humming this for the last 10 minutes. Delete plsss

I want to scrub my brain with an ice pick.
Terry Jacks served as a producer for one session with the Beach Boys when they recorded their initial version of "Seasons in the Sun" in 1971 during the "Surf's Up" sessions: ruclips.net/video/pHRTAtrwjuM/видео.html
When they decided not to put it on the album (over "Student Demonstration Time," mind you), Jacks decided to take it and record his own version two years later in 73. To think there's an alternate universe where that was a #1 hit for the Beach Boys...
I adore The Beach Boys, but Student Demonstration Time is horrible. It’s about a mass shooting but has upbeat 12 bar blues rock instrumentation. One of the most insensitive songs ever.
Kramzer: “that club song, the Hamster song or whatever..”
D-D-DEE DA DEE DE DOH DOH, DEE DA DEE DEE DOH!!
great show, great concept, fantastic discussion, thx gents
No. They are all HORRIBLE JOKES....a crime to humanity and music.😂
Great content as always, but no mambo no 5???
Got to check out the 'shreds' version of 'Photograph.' I can't stop laughing every time I hear it.
I finally had to listen to Love, Live, Hope after you guys continuous ragging. Its rather STUNNING that a band like Boston can make an album that sounds like such an amateur production. Sounds more like a second rate Boston sounding band making their first album.
I'm glad you all enjoyed Dr. Bombay! Jason is right, it's a Swedish white guy doing it.
I wish I'd been aware of this earlier. I'd nominate "Nuclear Attack" by Greg Lake. "You may never come back from a nuclear attack." Classic. Eat your heart out Bob Dylan.
"All For Love" by Bryan Adams, Rod Stewart, and Sting belongs here.
We 'Danced" to Popcorn in gym class in the late 70's. Outside of Wendy Carlos, it was most people's first exposure to Moog.
It’s actually quite legendary.
Great video again boys.
When my son (now 24) was a kid, he learned a version of "Who Let the Dogs Out" from a kid on his bus. In this version, dogs, cats, and chickens were let out, with the appropriate animal sounds. That version was a lot better than the "real" version.
That does sound like a much superior version.
How'd you manage omitting any new pop songs in here?
If you guys ever do a tournament of bad songs that we've all heard (say, songs that have made the Top 40), please include Heartache Tonight by the The Eagles. I might drop a baby running to go turn that shit off. As far as this tournament goes, I thankfully haven't heard much, but Photograph is extra egregious, as is Hey Soul Sister. Looking forward to the badness.
Yesssssssss
So many! But 'Nikita' by the otherwise legendary Elton John is my choice. 'Heartache Tonight' has the clunkiest, most contrived drum beat of all time. Ugh!
Sooomebody’s gonna hurt someone..
Bon Jovi = The Worst.
Maybe, Larry. Maybe.
Hah Larry.
Not reviewing that discography, I assume??
@@janpoelkamp4229 Thankfully I don't own any Bon Jovi albums. 😁
This was fun. I’m kind of intrigued to check out the bad songs, but at the same time, kind of scared.
Omg, most of these songs are atrocious. Voted.
Puff Daddy I’ll be missing you should have made the bracket that song is a war crime on the level of Henry Kissinger.
20:35 😆 Kinko The Clown, what the hell is that?????
Sorry, can’t help myself lol!!
I’m actually quite surprised Maroon 5 isn’t in here somewhere.
Move Like Jagger?
Well done guys ..March Badness…. The magic is still there ..TLM for life 👍
Boooyyyzzz…..this completely passed me by……,magnificent broadcasting boooyyyzzz……
Also I will agree with Jason... Other than the term "Achy Breaky" it's not that bad of a song... Hokey and trite yes but not abysmal. "Go Away, Little Girl" is a full on assault on the eardrums.
I enjoy the song. I think it’s fun, catchy and humorous. I don’t think every song has to be serious.
One of my coworkers have Hey Soul Sister on their playlist and my god. It’s awful
If you don't like "Telephone Man" by Meri Wilson, check out her follow up, "Peter The Meter Reader". A lesser version of her 'hit'.
I really hate I Just Called To Say I Love You but not as much as Achy Breaky Heart.
Ray Stevens told me that your channel is beautiful, as well as everything in its own special way.
Go Away Little Girl is a Goffin/King song. It was done by Steve Lawrence and Bobby Vee.
Based solely on single listens of each of next round's contestants, my ideal winners for next round would be
"Ahab the Arab",
"Seven Little Girls Sitting in the Backseat",
"Rice & Curry",
"Ew!",
"Hey, Soul Sister",
"Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue",
"Bollywood",
and "Summer of Love".
Honorable mentions to "Red Dress" and "All Summer Long"; if it weren't for the former being put against lazy racism and the latter against sinister- yet pathetically gutless- pandering, they would have been easy winners😄
The only disagreement I have with this round is despite how hilariously misguided and myopic it is in the deliverance of its message, "Ebony & Ivory" isn't THAT bad.
@@mirasolbalaga5616 Much of Lennon’s comeback material is every bit as sacharrine as McCartney ever was.
where's 'you're beautiful' by James Blunt?
Onions are amazing. The best vegetable when it comes to cooking. Eggplant is great too
Love to see March Badness back! There's a genuiness to Ebony and Ivory that makes me want to defend it even though it is so trite.
Yeah, there's some great melody in there. And it picks up at the end with the refrain.
Yes, I totally agree, especially coming from these two legends. The song is quite pleasant.
Winner: we built this city by Jefferson starship.......a 44 time champion. That song actually causes sepsis and strokes.
ha also one of Pat Finnerty's Stinkers (All Summer Long) - you need to rename that online lists region to Pat's Stinkers:
ruclips.net/video/u8FAbjjB48A/видео.html
Love Pat! Maybe next year we’ll name a region after him.
@@TastesLikeMusic 3 Beatos up to you guys then!
You should see Donny Osmond in a prank 'Japanese' interview: 'Donny Osmond Ushi'
We Built This City is the overall # 1 seed for me & I'm going chalk & picking that to romp to a title.
& I'm one & done ✔
They beat that chorus to death like Funky Town by Lipps Inc. I was sick of the song in just days when they played it relentlessly in 1986.
Phair's Funstyle was featured on Todd in the Shadows series Trainwreckrecords.
Of the songs I know on this list;
Best-Margaritaville-I don't understand the hate really.
*sways mullet in utter disgust*
Dr. Bombay was the name of Samantha's doctor in the Bewitched TV series,,, wonder if that was the inspiration for the name
Going on record: this lover of Zeppelin, the Stones, The WHO and Rush does in fact listen to some Creed and Nickelback. No shame.
At the end of the day, you like what you like.
I, for one, have no clue what Ebony And Ivory is doing here.
"Who Let The Dogs Out" won a Grammy.
The worst thing about that Limp Bizkit song by far is the Speak and Spell. The rest isn't really bad, just a regular cover. Face it, Fred can sing.
Fred wishes he could.
Yipee! March Badness is back!
Popcorn was the theme tune to Digger. You can't knock the theme tune to Digger! I loved that game!
Was that "Red Dress" song the inspiration for Lana Del Rey's "White Dress"? They kind of sound similar.
I was hoping that "Funky Man" The rap song that was sung by Dee Dee Ramon was on here. Horrible. Was using the name Dee Dee King.
In Sweden Dr. Bombays song was a huge hit amongst kids! One of those summer-hits that someone made lots of money from. He actually had quite a few songs which all became popular. Sort of a kids version / less talented Weird Al Yankovic!
“We Are Young” and “Pumped Up Kicks” are my two worst ever. Both from 2009ish
Yes, when Seasons in the Sun came out, you could not get away from it. It was played all the time.
I didn't have the chance to vote last year so I'm super excited this year for songs.
In "Seasons of the Sun," I always liked that vum-vum, vum-vum guitar riff. I thought it was pretty cool.
