This is one of the first speedruns I've seen where someone has explained both the mechanics AND plot of the game so completely, which is especially impressive considering the subject matter.
man the explanation around 1:17:00 was...difficult to parse. But if i'm understanding it... Ramza's default speed once he hits lv. 18 is 7. This will fill his Ct bar after 15 ticks during a fight. As long as he will be going first (which it sounds like is guaranteed, I am guessing no other enemies have a speed that high) then all enemy's will have a Ct value divisible by 15 (as they've all gone through 15 ticks as well) It does not matter what their actual speed values are, because as long as it's less than 7 it will be X*15. Any number divisible by 15 is also divisible by both 3 and 5. So Ramza can target all enemies by using Maths to hit "Any character whose Ct is divisible by 3". He cannot use "divisible by 5" because apparently any excess Ct wraps around, and after 15 ticks at 7 speed Ramza winds up with 105 speed (100 and a remainder of 5) so he would hit himself (also, 100 is divisible by 5 so he would hit himself regardless). BUT neither 100 nor 5 are divisible by 3. So targeting Ct divisible by 3 hits all non-Ramza characters on the map. speed examples: enemy with Speed 4: after 15 ticks they have Ct 60, which is divisible by both 3 and 5 enemy with speed 5: after 15 ticks they have Ct 75, which is divisible by both 3 and 5 enemy with speed 6: after 15 ticks they have Ct 90, which is divisible by both 3 and 5 Furthermore, Tide can also allow Ramza to have 9 or 12 speed, as that will also allow for targeting divis. by 3 Ct. (9*12=108=100 and remainder of 8...neither 100 nor 8 are divisible by 3.) (12*9=108=100 and a remainder of 8...neither 100 nor 8 are divisible by 3.)
Lol that's a lot but tailwind/yell caps lower (50 speed lol) than accumulate and Ramza is the easiest to get JP for as he'll be required in the game as a generic unit plus enhanced squire skills/armor in later chapters. Speed hacks before equipment hats definitely are good to know for extra turns, and surprisingly random monsters scale to level. Always helpful to learn (knowledge/exploits is rare, like Beowulf's drain can do 400+ to lucavi demons), and I thought in the remake to do dark knight with auto battle (defender on someone else or maybe himself can get tailwind spams with work) and JP spillover was something. 1:05:29 didnt know about weather affecting lighting though I know the Thundara with thunder rod buff helps a ton early game; with luck you can get Delita to not kill himself lol. 1:05:58 not moving lets you start at 20 CT so another reason to spam yell. This knowledge helps a lot more than the bs tutorial. Jump also works well in conjunction once you get a horizontal 8 and vertical 3 to be stupid fast and get most height. 1:12:29 press F for those black mages lol evil but makes the game faster if exploiting math skill, let alone get enemy crystals for all abilities despite the game saying to choose one.
I'm enjoying this playthru a whole lot. I must have played FFT a dozen times so I'm no stranger to the battle system, but I'm still learning so much from your commentary. Good work!
Nice! Puwexil shows up about 3:50 . This is the first RPG LimitBreak video ive seen, so if that is a normal occourrence... Anyway lots more videos to watch now.
I've played through this game on pretty much every platform it came out on - most recently Android market. I appreciate your commentary, it's like I "knew" about spill over JP, and traps for NPC characters, but never knew the "why". Great run/game/cause.
A few of my thoughts: 1. I never saw it as Delita cutting out her tongue, but more of him slicing her throat in the struggle. She survives, of course, but at the cost of her voice. 2. Just because the game's limitations make all the chocobos look the same doesn't mean Ramza can't recognize his brother's bird. 3. My theory is that Olan actually caught up with Ramza and Alma, but they asked him to keep their survival a secret. A secret he was willing to take to the grave (or burning stake, in his case).
Has anyone tried to incorporate the trick of backing the enemy chemist into a corner in the first fully player controlled battle in a speed run? You can jack Ramza's squire JP up very quickly doing that. Though I don't know if it'd be quick enough.
Did that glitch work for squire class? It's been many tears since I played the game but I remember that there were classes which that wasn't available on due to their placement one the menu screen. edit: Actually, now that I think about it, it was because they didn't have enough skills in the class to do the glitch.
it would take to long u just want the 200 jp in gariland then grind in mandlia and no u can't scroll squire but u dont really care tho, also the english verison also has the scroll glitch
i remember that my buddies gave me hell because i spent so much time on the Calculator class. after i Holy'd an entire board full of enemies 3 times in a row they didn't make fun of me anymore.
Oracle has some great spells and almost all of them work with math skill. Pray faith lets you optimize faith casters accuracy and damage. Doubt faith not only keeps a faith mage from casting, it prevents allies helping it and nothing is immune to it and not even ribbon blocks it
I'd just manafont and mana shield to regain lost mp upon moving after or if not one shotting. It's way too easy to do those faith shenanigans once you know the exploits. Even ninja with rend speed prevents bosses from having another turn. Still, it is interesting to know another use for Oracle outside that manafont exploit (on a summoner I can even moogle to heal or cast Ramuh or whatever) as Beowulf power creeps them badly and drain does hundreds of damage to lucavi with Reis' holy breath at least 400 per random hit.

Whenever people ask me what the game is about, I just tell them god is satan and he must die.
Tide is an international treasure. This remains my favorite run of anything.

i played this damn game so much i got to the point where i would dream that i had to select "move" to get out of bed.
That must have been intense.
me too i swear

This commentary is amazing.
Very nice commentary!! I definitely enjoyed the speed run.
re-watching this because of the 2017 AGDQ No math run from Elmagus. Tide is amazing at explaining everything!
i finally understand the game now
That was AMAZING... Great job! That was very entertaining, and I am sorry again that I missed the event when it was live...
awesome! The commentary is amazing, indeed. Thank you for that!
Tide did an amazing job at commentary and I felt like I understood the lore a lot better now.
AMAZING commentary, I really enjoyed this!
This was awesome, thanks for all your hard work
Top notch commentary & an enjoyable run!
I played the hell out of this game. I never beat it but I played it a lot. Should fire it up again sometime.

4:13:00 i guess you can call that a "Rofel-stomp"
Awesome run and story explanation!
great run by Tide, commentary was best!
Awesome play! Congrats!

What are the character's starting ct? Does it always start at a multiple of 3 im not 100% understanding math skill lol
How do people speed run games like this

Fun fact: You can get and play Cloud from Final Fantasy 7 in this game! The more you know!
What did he mean when he said it's not effective to scroll glitch priest?
Kanra maybe you get everything you need on the way anyway? So no need to use the glitch?

Wait in place is OP!

Uh, no. Level -> 3 -> SPELL would have killed the archer without hitting Ramza.
(level 36 vs 28)
That second guy on the couch is hilarious. He can't even sit up.

Against worker 7 new rafa is only mage type that can damage it with magic . For whatever reason malak does 0 damage
If anyone is wondering, the fate of Ramza after FFT WAS confirmed. Spoilers, obviously: twitter.com/YasumiMatsuno/status/169572953686683648
A mostly solo calculator Ramza run...hell, why not?! Saving the world with mathematics...the ultimate LOL...!!!! 😂😂😂😂
I've always referred to the Math skill as 'weaponized autism'
No you haven't. You just wanted to make a cheap joke.
We got a White Knight in Da Club.
Asian dude defeats all his enemies with math. Yupp, sounds about right.
shutup!!!!
Good commentary, but him mispronouncing stuff is driving me way crazier than it should.
