Her voice IS very soothing!! Most people could imagine her singing a lullaby to a child or love song to her husband or boyfriend. That's how special her voice was.
That fuzz guitar solo was Richard's brilliant idea. Guitarist Tony Peluso was shocked when he was asked to "let loose." It was very different for the Carpenters.
Different Carpenters songs can evoke different feeling, but Karen's voice always gives me warm, fuzzy, goosebumps. Her voice is a one-of-a-kind. She could sing anything and I'll listen, even if I don't like the song, LOL.
Well, Ace, the "feeling" that you always get with the Carpenters, might be the one that I get...Karen"s voice is like a warm blanket on a cold day, a kind hand from your mom or grandma stroking your head when you were little and out of sorts. Soothing, velvet, welcoming and so unpretentious. Lemme know if it's something like that.😉
You are spot in. I also describe it that it is like your mother comforting you at night, reading a great story, putting you at peace and soothing to you to sleep. That is Karen's voice.
It's just so sad that Karen, lead singer, actually passed away so very young, in her early 30's. Anorexic Nervosa. Such a beautiful woman with such a beautiful voice. Her brother played the piano. Excellent couple. The whole band were brilliant too. RIP Karen 💔💔
YOU COULD PRACTICALLYYYY CALL THIS A CARPENTERS ROCK BALLAD ACE, IT REALLY WAS!!!😊 PEOPLE WIND UP SAYING, THIS IS THE CARPENTERS???😮RIP☹KAREN YOU ANGELIC DOLL! 💯
I suggest that you check out a medley of songs that Karen Carpenter did, on a TV show, with Ella Fitzgerald, back in the very early 80s. You might not know who Miss Ella was. She was the Queen of Song, from the 30 through the 60s, and into the 70s. She had this powerful, yet beautiful voice, that she showed off with all of the great male artists, during her time. In this video I'm referring to, Karen and Miss Ella trade off singing parts of famous songs. Miss Ella was getting up in age, so she sat and Karen stood. They had a beautiful backdrop for this, and it was a truly magical moment in tv history. My feeling, at the time, and every time I see it, is that Miss Ella was passing the torch to the next 'Queen of Song'. Sadly, Karen would pass away, shortly after this, so that never came to fruition. But, nobody can ever convince me that anything but that, took place on that stage, that night.
That electric Guitar they used in this song nearly hurt them because, so many of their fans thought they sold out and for a while. It definitely affected their popularity but they rebounded and did well.
I was exactly in the same spot with love about 20 yrs ago. I had been married 3 times to abusive men, so I just bowed out. and swore to raise my son and never try again. my poor husband, When we first met, I barely gave him the time of day. I went on a date with him, didn't like something he said, bailed out of his car and walked home. I was ready to live without love except for my son then the guy won me over within 5 yrs we finally married, and I've been happy for the last 20 yrs., He's a great man. but I know why she sang that. and sang it beautifully.
This is the live video with the Royal Philharmonic remix (which Richard did more recently) overdubbed. Try to find the live sound version. It itself is incredible. Her live performances are as flawless as the studio.
The guitar player is Tony Peluso. In this video we see him playing live along with the recording, so it sounds slightly out of tune with itself, but he nails the solo.
"Angelic" gets overused a lot. For Karen Carpenter, the word is absolutely deserved. Give a listen to Carpenters "Superstar", "Rainy Days and Mondays", "We've Only Just Begun". I could listen to her voice for *days.* As a kid, I thought their music was sappy, and "not cool." I was *stupid* as a kid. The Carpenters are always worth listening to.

A vintage video clip played over the 2018 remix with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Richard Carpenter. The original is so much better,
It was called a "fuzzy" guitar sound.
Fuzz
Always like velvet and warm, sweet and pure. You did not say what the feeling was that they always give you, so we can't respond.

Karen was incredible. I have been waiting a long time for Lucy Thomas to cover one of hers.
Just a note...that guitar riff was really a big deal when they introduced that into their music, Richard was a genius.
She was so far gone in this video it’s 💔 she had the voice right along
Bluesy with a spark of hope. Wandering about but knowing where your center is. Kind of Zen. Experience one to appreciate the other.💔💖
CARPENTERS & JONI MITCHELL ACE!!!😊YOU CAN NEVERRRRR GO WRONG!👍

Maybe you feel similarly because you know how Karen's story is going to end...
