    I purchased the shorter Progress a few weeks ago from Shave Nation and I love this razor. High quality German razor! Now am trying out various blades in the razor and yes, I can tell the difference between different blades in this razor. All blades work well but some are better than others. I recommend the Merkur Progress adjustable and also get a blade sampler pack at the same time.
    One more thing. Dump the pressurized can of shaving foam and get a quality soap you lather for yourself using a good brush! The soap matters. I now put shaving in the category of the pleasurable experience many of us get when enjoying a fine cup of coffee.
    I now purchase good shaving gear and products for family members for birthdays, Christmas and other gifting occasions. Makes choosing a gift easy and appreciated by the one getting the gift.

    You can turn the razor past the 5 setting. When you do that the 1 setting become a 6, the 2 setting becomes a 7, etc. Paul H. shaved with this razor by turning the adjustment knob around twice, which made the 5 setting the equivalent of 10.

    This was my first saftey razor, I used it daily with great pleasure for about five years before I bought a Feather All Stainless Steel. It is a good razor to start with, or one that is used in a heavy rotation. In my case the Chrome plating started to peel off towards the end of me using it, it was still functional though, but it just looked like rubbish, hence I moved on to all SS. I'll never buy any plated razor ever again.

    • @poxriddenwhore
      @poxriddenwhore 2 года назад

      Just a heads up, the Feather as-d2 is also chrome plated, though the plating is likely of a higher quality tjan what is found on Merkurs.

    • @ravishingrick13
      @ravishingrick13 2 года назад

      @@poxriddenwhore The Merkur seemed to be made of cast iron and was to my estimation, chrome dipped. After some years the chrome started to flake off, the cast iron (being partially unprotected due missing chrome) got effected by moisture and eventually started to rust and slowly disintegrate. The Feather is solid stainless steel and has a nickel layer applied to it, I guess through a DLC or anodising process. The Feather is quality wise in whole other league than the Merkur. After 10 years of daily use it shows no sighs of wear. It shall easily last a lifetime. I own both the AS-D1 and AS-D2.

    Hi Geo. Do you ever feel that one edge of merkur progress is more milder than the other edge? Am using it for nearly three months and especially on the 1 setting, while one edge is doing the job perfectly I can’t tell same for the other edge. And this situation is not only for setting 1. Other settings are also same. Of course agressivness increases but one edge is still milder than the other.

      Astra SP's are considered to be relatively sharp and smooth. But, they are a budget blade, and some complain of qc issues. I have not experienced these issues myself. They are quite acceptable, for 3 shaves per blade. My face is average sensitivity, beard coarser than average. I like them, for the price. YMMV.
      Derby blades are considered to be not so sharp, except the Derby Premium's which are sharper. Derby's tend to be preferred by those with light or fine beards.
      Gillette Nacets are IMO sharper than Astra SP's, slightly less smooth and forgiving, but longer lived.

    Whatever you do don't take the Progress apart to clean. It'll take hours to refit and then it'll never be the same. I found it too aggressive before I cleaned it, and impossible to use thereafter.

      What do you mean? If you disassemble? Doesn't it fit properly?

    Despite the conveniences of modern shaving methods, I’ve found our primitive ancestors actually had us beat. Try inserting a modern half blade into a piece of antler, bone, or buffalo tooth. The chisel style razor will prove itself again and again.
