As a Korean, It was a huge shock that the actor playing the psycho gamer is REALLY famous for his gentlemanly demeanor and refined appearance. He usually stars in romance roles, so seeing him take on such a creepy character was completely unexpected. It was a real shock, comparable to someone like Colin Firth or Tom Hanks suddenly playing a psychopathic role. Actually I've guessed He would make another tender kiss scene in that series.
Is it true hes one of the most expensive actors in the South Korean film industry? Ive seen Gong yoo in Train to busan, but I was just Captivated by the Front man this season. I absolutely love him in I saw the Devil and he was absolutely wasted as Storm Shadow in the Gi Joe movies. Lee Byung Hun is awesome
yep, normally those two actors stars in movies, not series. When the frontman revealed him in season 1, it was a shock cz we never expected such an EXPENSIVE actors would star in one series. actually the actor of Gi-hun is famous too. lee byung hun is absolutely the GOAT, so some koreans guessed him by his accent and tone. but gong yoo,,, i guess it was the first time he acted like that in his 20+yrs career.
While handing out lottery tickets and bread to homeless people in the park, he becomes hysterical when he sees that most of the homeless people choose lottery tickets. He may have done this to gain confidence that 'human beings are trash that has ruined themselves through their desires right in front of their eyes' and that there is nothing wrong with their conscience about disposing of trash. But since both he and the father he killed were lottery pickers, he couldn't help but feel like he was looking into a mirror through the homeless man in the park. In fact, the man in the subway is not a psychopath, and I think that his final choice was to die as a 'human' rather than as a 'dog'.
Two points: 1) they don't kidnap people for the games. The entire premise is that it's a voluntary process. 2) the final scene is about honor, a big thing in East Asian cultures. They wouldn't break the rules because it would be dishonorable. Also, if the salesman had wanted to kill Ghee-hoon, he could have just shot him at the start. Due to their deep seated trauma, both he and Ghee-hoon only feel alive when playing high stakes death matches. The director talks about it in an article.
I see the word "honour" being thrown around as the word explaining Gi-hun and the recruiter. While I understand what others mean by that, I think a better way of articulating it is a lot of east Asian culture is rooted in strongly abiding by the principles in which you live your life. Even if that means not going with what might not be pragmatically correct for some. It's not "honourable" in the sense of they're necessarily doing the righteous thing, but rather "honour" in how earnestly they stick by their convictions and rules they set for themselves. Whether you agree or disagree with these principles is your prerogative but that's how they live their lives. You guys saw this recurring theme in Shogun and now again here with Squid Games.
There is nothing honourable about recruiting people to a life or death game, rules which they are not told about until it's too late. Nothing honourable about putting yourself in one of the games to prove you ain't a dog lol. If that's worshipped in their culture then I feel sorry for them. It's just dramatic.
@@SuzyLuOfficial before the game started they actually did let the players know about the rules and also did gave them a consent form for the players to sign (this was shown on season 1, idk if you guys watched the first season). Also the guy didn't actually start the game or continue to play the game just because of being told a dog, its because they are honorable in a way that they wont kill each other just because they can or just because they are losing, this is also ingrained in most east asian cultures. Also, i'm not sure that you've realized if you guys are watching a drama or a movie (it's supposed to be dramatic). you guys being sorry for their culture because of honor just proves the point that there is cultural differences.
@@SuzyLuOfficialummm i mean it’s supposed to be dramatic. And it’s fiction. Also, If you’re willing to suspend your belief that there’s a yearly tournament-like game happening in a secret island somewhere near korea where the recruits play children’s games and then get killed like it’s nobody’s business and then the government knows nothing about it, while having the founder (the original 001) and the frontman join the game which there is a risk they will be killed, then I think it’s easier to believe that the nutcase recruiter would honor the rules and kill himself if necessary in a russian roulette game that he initiated himself. 😒🙄
Cultural differences regarding "honor" and "integrity" aside, Gi-hun played six rounds of the game. He had a glimpse into the type of characters that are involved. He understands better than anyone else the rules this world plays by. He knew the recruiter wouldn't turn the gun on him. Gi-hun shredded his ego and belief system and so the recruiter knew the only way out for himself was to play by the rules to the end. (Of course he was a complete psycho as well).
Respect for the rules of the game. Even in Saw, you abide by the rules, but if you break them for personal gain, then you prove why the game never stop. You prove youre just like everyone else.
I love how everyone, including me thinks "I'll just take the gun and shoot him" but in someway that just makes Gi hun a cheater in a game with established rules. By following the rules and risking it,he did prove something. Whether he got lucky or not,he's still standing and the rules apply to all.
I also thought that biker’s girlfriend was only sweet-talking Jun-ho to get out of getting a ticket but she still kept flirting even after Jun-ho already gave the ticket. I’m glad the biker left her where she belongs.
Both Gi Hun and the Recruiter have Pride, despite their opposing views about the Squid Game. They know as a Player and Enforcer that they freely accepted the rules of the Roulette game, and were both betting their lives. Each of them would rather die than be cheap and break the rules in order to win. Kinda like...I may die, but I stand by my beliefs till the end. The last two trigger pulls were their own way of saying F. U. to one another. Great actors both of them.
Public toilets in Korea are clean. Koreans do not dirty public toilets because they have a strong sense of citizenship and community. And they don't even pay at the entrance. Also, the Korean government is a very powerful country in cracking down on drugs. If a syringe is found in a public toilet, citizens immediately report it to the police, and the government thoroughly catches drug users.
@@inguh7041 That's right. I think you're talking about the t.o.p who played Thanos. So even after 10 years, Koreans criticized him a lot. Koreans also criticized the director for casting t.o.p. It is common in Hollywood, the United States, but in Korea, people do not forgive after 10 years. His performance in the drama was terrible. His future will still be dark.
42:18 you're right. that game is pretty common in korea. it's like the more stressful(?) version of rock scissor paper. you have to think very fast. the more it's repeated, it becomes more like instinct.
This first episode changed my whole opinion about the recruiter..Back in season 1 i thought he wasn't actually that bad, i thought he was kind, polite and wasn't so bad compared to the other bad guys. This episode proved me soo wrong, he was insane as hell .
I think they were monitoring everything and if he broke the rules and shot Ki-hoon, they would have punished him. On the contrary, if Ki-hoon broke the rules and shot the delivery man, Ki-hoon would have died immediately.
I freakin love the way they made the recruiters character. He goes around doing the bread and lotto ticket thing every day to justify his way of living and to prove to himself that poor people are all trash and deserve to die. The bakers efforts didn't go to waste because they got paid for it so why would they cares if the bread ends up in someones stomach or a birds stomach.
