YOU STINK' Please Wear Deodorant in Thailand

- 'Greng Jai' (เกรงใจ) is a deeply ingrained concept in Thai culture-I've covered it in other clips, but when it comes to BODY ODOUR, there are some great GRENG JAI lessons.
In Thailand’s heat and humidity, some people underestimate the importance of proper hygiene and more importantly ... SHOWERING AND DEODORANT. Sorry to break the news ...fragrant oils, or using non-antiperspirant products, the result is often the same-it’s not enough.
In this clip, I’ll break down the issue from cultural, linguistic, and even meteorological perspectives, offering practical tips on how to stay fresh and avoid offending those around you - and I'll tell you my secret that allows me to wear a suit on the streets in Bangkok even in April (if the situation calls for it) and not break a sweat.

This topic is so true. I've been hearing this for 45 years from different Thai's,especially from my wife.
Wash with Parrot Soap , is one of those unknown Thai gems.
Asepso all the way for me 😊
Glad you were brave enough to discuss this topic Stuart! I have noticed that hardly any Thai people wear perfume or cologne. Unfortunately I have experienced a few Thais that were less than fragrant shall we say, while riding in songtaews. The vast majority that have poor body hygiene, in my experience, have been non-thais though.
I am a person with high cleanliness standards, some westerners I am ashamed to be associated with in Thailand. It amazes me that even a bolt driver after driving all day doesn’t smell. Take them as an example!
Many thais are lucky in that regard, south east asia in general is lacking functioning of one gene which causes them to not have the same strong body odor as people in Europe or America. I have the same mutation and I always remember thinking it was weird why everyone needed to use a deodorant as a kid lol
Jai as arms/antennas and the way you explain greng jai is such a cool way to learn Thai! This way of explaining words and concepts and cultures make me keep coming back to your channel for years (and also was a paying subscriber and bought and read your book) Thanks Stu keep em coming
This is soooooo true. I was once on a flight back from Chiang Mai and sit next to a tourist couple. A husband sit at an aisle seat while his wife was in the middle and I was in the window seat. And thank you god that he was not right next to me. Because even there was a person sit between us, he was STINK so bad like very bad. I had to turn my head out and looked out the window THE WHOLE TRIP. And yes, somehow, this kind of comments given straight to their face is not something that we learned to do. And it felt even bad to do it.

In the early 80s when I first went to Thailand, the girls all thought we stunk because they didn’t like the deodorant and aftershave. they preferred natural smell.
Goes without saying, but I'll add it anyway. After taking a shower, and using deodorant, put on clean clothes. It doesn't have to be straight from the wardrobe every time, but make sure that the clothes you put on don't smell bad already.
yes... some nations are more prone to putting back on stinky sweaty clothes several days in a row
Deodorant covers the smell while antiperspirant slows the actual sweating in the covered area...
they are not the same product, and alot of people are confused about them. 💪
Antiperspirant and deodorants work really well if you apply after a shower at night before bed. Gives them all night to work and then apply again after every shower.I have been doing it for years and never sweat and never smell. I live in Thailand.
Wearing linen works nicely too. For the past 8 years, I used to walk to come to work. Linen shirts are more expensive than cotton ones, but they feel way cooler.
Wish more people care about this topic.
So True. I'm Thai female. I've showered twice a day since I was a little girl. I nevered forgotten or ignored brushing my teeth, washing my face and feet before going to bed. Even I stayed in New York or Europe where the weather is super cold. I still showered twice a day and I found it helped a lot becuase after showering I never felt cold anymore. Hyginene is important issue in Thailand. Whoever has smell from theier body Thai people will try to avoid getting close to them. If someone doesn't like deodorant, you may try baby powder. That's a classic item of Thai poeple.
I have a dermatologist hack . The body odor cause by bacteria on you skin they break down the sweat results in body odor. So to end this you can use benzoyl peroxide sale at any pharmacy. Just use the lowest percentage would be find. Apply on the armpit for 5 minutes and rinse off. I repeat rinse off! Otherwise it will cause so much irritation. You can go for weeks without being smelly. And you don’t need deodorant too.
Once you feel the odor might come back just repeat.
Anti bacterial soap would also do the job.
“Rein it in, out of consideration for those around you.”
The problem isn't the deodorant, the problem is many foreign don't shower at all, I talk with girls in the past from USA they tell is normal have shower 2/3 times a week. 🤮
Me and every member in my thai family we shower 2 times a day, and we use deodorant anyway, myself I often change 2 t-shirt a day in hot season. I can even teel you the most 2 foreign stink but I don't gonna mention for education
Even if you smell something that. None will talk about that publicly it is an insult.
which is why I put this clip out . from now on if anybody is too krengjai they can just point somebody to this clip instead
For all the people playing semantics between deodorant and antiperspirant.
If you don’t sweat much, use a deodorant. If you get wet, use an antiperspirant.
Yes, we can smell it either way. So please just use something.
One time I passed two male East Asian tourists, I was taken aback with their strong body odour. The smell was so overwhelming that I had to hold my breath until they were out of sight! Thailand is both hot and humid, so please use deodorant and anti-bacteria body shower, these would help a lot.
I remember when I went back to Thailand I bought a lot of deodorants because I bought when they were on sale or with discount
coupons and gave as a gift for my family but they told me nobody used them.
🤢
Dr. pong 28d spray. Best for keeping you smelling good here. It is the best deodorant sold here. Try it!
Thanks for the video, Stuart! Really helpful.
But what would you say about loud music or TV in the night? Why do some Thai people do this?
I agree about Uniqlo 100%!
i live in harmony with nature bro
that's okay just as long as it's not in Thailand
AXE is 2-3 times more expensive in Thailand than in your homecountry. Bring plenty with you
I find AXE here is more of a cover up scent rather than real anti perspirant
I'm not sure about that. Just quickly checked on the 7-Eleven app. Two bottles of 50ml AXE cost 100 baht which is about $3.
@@NarootW ... the standard size of a regular deo spray can is 200 ml ...
Shower twice a day.
Thailand weather is hot and humid you will sweat a lot.
Where do you buy those under shirts Stuart, thanks Sir? Great video

There's a gene for not having body odor. Must be very common here
it's crazy how little body odour Thais have... and perhaps it's led to a limited selection of good deodorants
It's a variation in the ABCC11 gene that gives them a reduction in body odor. The same gene also causes them to have dry earwax.
When I first moved to Thailand I was surprised that a Thai friend wanted to look in my ears. He called all his friends over to have a look.
I couldn't understand what was going on until one guy who could speak English explained that they wanted to see if it was true that farangs had wet earwax. 🤣
The first six months I arrived in Thailand in 2011 I couldn't stop sweating on the BTS, and I did stink. Then one day I acclimitised and I stopped sweating, was weird.
This is one of the many things I love about Thailand. I am American but I will say there is nothing more offensive then someone with B.O. I live in NYC and people here don't care about those around them at all, one of the reasons I'm moving shortly. Summers here are the worst! Hot, humid and everything stinks, including the people. I have been to Thailand many times and I have ever only smelled B.O. once, and it was on a foreigner. It's just called consideration for others.
"Huge issue" I don't know about that. I definately notice it occasianlly particularly in lifts and on BTS or buses. Sorry to say it but the majority of the time it is a certain race of people and they aren't caucasian. Controversial content maybe but at the same time it annoys me when I have to stand near someone like this on BTS or somewhere and everyone in a 3m radius has to put up with this loud smelly guy. Fun fact too a lot of Thais don't sweat much at all. There was a post about this online some years back which I was sceptical of. Then doing a 10km hike up a hill in the hot sun in Krabi with my ex I was amazed she didn't have a drop of sweat on her. I don't think they all don't sweat as I train with them cutting weight sometimes in sweatsuits but they seem to have a higher tolerance to heat / sweating
I have been called in by over 10 companies over the years to communicate to the foreign staff that they need to wear deodorant or the Thais are going to quit. One company flew me to India to present the results of a survey I ran with over 100 Thais and no. 1 issue was they Stink... please wash, wear deodorant, shower and wear clean clothes. Execs of the company were given Hygiene hampers when posted to Thailand
@@StuartJayRaj I didn't think of it from a workplace perspective. I can imagine that as Thais might not want to address it openly. I had a boss once tell me to address it with one of our staff once. I just blurted it out and it worked. I don't think he realised. I also had a stewardess ask my Thai sous chef once to tell asians at work to stop putting pooey tissues in the bin. "I never want to do that again". She didn't realise they were filipino and he was thai lol. Nothing to do with him.
What race of people are you referring to 🤔
Its very humid there. You're going to sweat a lot no matter how much deodorant you put on.
UNI-QLO airism helps
Let me raise a stink!
1, Thai detergent packages don't have any ENGLISH. 2, most washing machines use cold water. 3, lots of clothes don't tell if it is 100% cotton or a blend. 4, it is hard to find 100% cotton t-shirts.
If I understand correctly, you can use a good perfume, but only after the body's own odour has been extinguished? Is that correct?
Looking at Grengjai as a baseline - the goal is to not IMPOSE on anyone around you, keeping in mine, forcing someone to smell any fragrance good or bad is a form of 'imposing' - so with that in mind:
1. Shower at least twice a day, but if you've done anything that warrants showering more, err on the side of caution
2. Use Anti Persipirate AND Deodorant - just body sprays are not enough - but don't overdo the SMELL part of those
3. using Aftershave / Perfume - if just going to work, perhaps 1 pump okay, but to make it super obvious you have it on is not great - especially if you'll be in closed public places.
4. Things like Oud Oil or Patchouli Oil are considered more 'stink' than 'fragrant' to Thais, and not advised.
I know there will be people who object to this - but i actually have it in WRITING by Thais - as i have done numeous surveys on this stuff over the past 30 years for my cross cultural training. It is what it is.
@@StuartJayRaj Okay, thank you very much for the detailed explanation. Very much appreciated.
I also ask with the background that I know a Thai lady in Bangkok who works in the beauty sector (hairdressing salon - closed public place) and has deliberately chosen a higher-quality and high-priced foreign perfume because her work colleagues also use it on themselves and it is important to her to do the same. It is obviously important to her that it is noticed by the others.
She probably wants the fragrance to be definitely perceived on her without it being too intrusive. A fine line for a foreigner who has not grown up with Grengjai.
good tips. baking soda kills BO causing bacteria. mix a pinch with water and apply thin paste to armpits.
Ive tried all those kinds of natural things... nothing works as well as aluminium based antiperspirant deodorants
Thailand is hot. Everyone needs to take a shower at least once every 24 hours. Use a deodorant. Avoid eating garlic if you can. If you’re sweating a lot, go back to your hotel, take a shower and rest a while. Change your clothes everyday. Brush your teeth and have a breath freshener handy. Be polite to Thai people and smile more often. It’s their country, don’t impose yourself on them. Adapt to their ways or stay out of Thailand.
Thanks for the the Heads Up with Airism shirts, they also make boxer shorts, on special ends today AUD$10, long sleeve shirts are A$60, free Del over A$75., I need long sleeves and a good hat to wear in TL, too much sun exposure over the years has caught up to me. i heard take Aussie sunscreen to TL as its better? Not every clothes item on Uniglo's website is Airism, some are just plain cotton, also their website seems Chaotic - personal opinion.
Taoyieblok (Turtle stepping on the world) deodorant powder is really effective. All big supermarkets and 7/11 stock it. It comes in a small plastic bottle. There is also a mentholated deo powder and a yellow one of another brand too. 40 Baht or so if I remember correctly. No need for all the Western deo stuff.
Thai's would Faint if they went up to Northern Aus, body odour can be very Strong (pungent) up that way. i know a guy that is married to a Thai Lady and he was "whinging" because i wear Mens fragrance (not strong) and deodorant every day, he doesn't use either, he said natural is best - i disagreed.
😱
Well explained
Hi Stuart! On your tone tool, is there a voice button I am missing or maybe it is my browsers? Like can I listen to the thai word while looking at the tone graph?
In order to keep it all free, and not have to hit any pay-for APIs, the way to hear on demand sounds of any word that you type in is to go to the word spacer tool and it will allow you to open fire google and hear is there . i have an implementation on my local machine where i can call the api to hear individual words comma but it's not the pricing ride up which would become uncontrollable right now in this free version.
Also, why deodorant is so small/expensive here in Thailand? 🤔
They are not. 80 baht?
@liamburns8554 I see this price for small sized one. I used to pay around 100 baht in some 200ml cans back in my home country.
everything else be cheap...buy deodorant
@@thetiredlinecook I not said I'm not buying it, just said the price difference. Regardless of price please buy it 🤣

I really think the body odor thing is these people, 1st have to shower, and a minimum of 3 times a day almost. Very disgusting when they think deodorant replaces the shower. i would tend to wager that many hardly shower once🤦🏽🙈🙀a day.
So true.
Hot and humid weather so Thais usually shower every day normally 2 times a day.

Sorry, the word overlapping which in Thai language that you're talking about smell accumulation in your condition might be used as the words overlapping or accumulating instead of overlapping. You can tell me if I didn't get your explannation or I misunderstood your communication Because of my English is not so good.
Curry in the diet also cause a smell...
I don't use deodorant for 25 years and before not every day. I think the big corporations want you to buy there products. How was life possible before all that nonsense? After a shower your sweat doesn't smell. It's allso the fabric that you were. All that synthetic plastic clothes smell so bad. Simple cotton, bamboo or hemp fabric is the way to in my opinion
what if you take showers? foreign concept for mr. Raj perhaps 😀
did you listen to what I said? shower 2 to 4 times a day plus anti perspirant/ deodorant. Showering is a given but it's not enough
I was surprised to find deodorant powders in Thailand
❤❤❤
Actually it’s not just the deodorant you need to shave the hair. When I moved to Thailand 27 years ago I was a Thai boxer and in the camp I was taught to shave the hair as the sweat and BO clings the hair. Shave it you’ll never have that stink agsin.
false
@ False? Why? You ever tried it? It’s always worked for me and it’s very noticeable when I skip a week of shaving.
@@boranbkk4270 I buzzed my pits down to stubble with my beard trimmer to see if it made a difference. It might have helped 10%. So not much.
It doesn't help that almost nowhere in Thailand sells good deodorant. Nearly all deodorant available are those worthless terrible roll-ons. I've seen a few Foodlands that carry real deal Old Spice deodorant bars but not always. It is widely available on lazada though. There's clearly a market for it.
Boots used to sell the gillette gel sticks, but they discontinued a while back - but you can still order most deodorants that you'd det in the west on Shoppee
Taoyehblok - natural, cheap and stops bad odours without just covering them up. Some 7/11 and Tops have it or can get online.
7/11 sells lots, yes they are “women’s”, but they smell nice and better than body odour!
