Hey Mark, I’ve save just about all your videos, been a Mopar guy most of my life and went to the dealer to get a Scatpack and test drive this 2015 650i Xdrive and fell in love with it, but ask the dealership to give me 48hrs to research this car and my anxiety of buying it especially with this video is to the roof, I had subscribed and will keep researching before I pull the trigger, thanks for this much needed information

That is exactly how I landed in the euro cars myself, I drove Japanese cars for years and appreciated them for their dependability, but then I got a taste of a BMW and BOOM, I was sold after the drive. Better drive, more solid, more substantial and I never looked back. I had another revelation when I first experienced my first Porsche. Wow some great cars out there and I realized that life is too short to drive boring cars. Cheers
that the think about bimmers there so great when there new takes your breath away its so easy to be convince to pull that trigger but when novelty and romance ends and repair bill come kicking in you pray to god you never bought that pos ex bmw owner f30 328i now owns a used camary 2.5 got some sucker to trade it in for my pos bmw sold him all the romance of the bmw brand bought 50k miles now 150k ran tight not a single issue it runs exactly like how the a new off the showroom car would run if you dont mind the 5 year lifespan and crushing depreciation and reliability issue after the warranty is over then by all means bmw are great car when they work my experience is with a 2 liter turbo bimmer people say that one of the more reliable turbo bimmer engine and its pos god knows what the v8 hot v twin turbo engine are like.

Have you gotten sued yet? The N63 had issues at the start, but these were addressed by BMW for free, and by the time this video was made, the problems were addressed. You're standing in front of cars that did not have those problems in 2019 and by today, are running great.
He is telling the truth about them bmw v8’s I Bought a 11 x6 5.0. 12k miles By 30k miles I was complaining to the dealer over and over and over about putting oil every 4 days. I drive between ny/ct every other day They changed valve seals at 50k it never stopped drink in the oil Now at 100k.. cylinder 8 misfire , blow spark plug over and over ,smokes,shudders. So basically your buying a car that the engine is guaranteed to need major engine work or die on you every 50k miles. Who wants to buy a new car every 4/5years They want keep you spending money . Imagine seeing 1999 cars still working and your nice bmw parked because you need 9/10k to fix something that’ is a defect in the craftsmanship 😒
The original N63 (2007-2013) is a real stinker. It ceased production in 2013. However, the newest version of the N63, the N634BBM3 (known as the “R”) has technical upgrades that conquer all historic issues including the valve guides wear. It was introduced in late 2018.
@@scringe1 I’ve checked out of the BMW scene for now. Ask your BMW for that engine’s service guide. It comes in a PDF form. Tell the sales associate you won’t buy the car unless the engine you’re referring to is either A. The next evolution of the N63 over the “R”, or B. a separate version which has the upgraded valve stem seals from the “R”.
I've owned at least 16 BMW's since 1998 of all different configurations. They were maintained to the letter at a dealership and have never had any engine warranty problem. Have had all different engines from the turbo 4 to a hand built M6 convertible. Nothing but great performance and never any engine issues.

I've only had to own one Toyota since 1998! I remember many a morning having to push my landlord's E30 M3 to bump start it, so he could get to work. As for the rest, I've not been in a BMW that wasn't lit up like a Christmas tree with faults. Don't get me started on the engines, which in M configuration, have been a well-documented, total and utter, unreliable disaster ... be it 6, 8 or 10 cylinders. And lest we forget the miracle of modern engineering which was the SMG gearbox (cough). So me thinks I smell horse dung from a fanboy!
Very true video - on point ! . I own a 750i with a V8 Twin Turbo engine . Lots of power but the car is burning oil (between oil changes - which is normal) these engines have lots of torque and also producing lots of HEAT . I will not recommend any V8 engine to nobody. The 6 cylinder will be safer to deal with .
I absolutely love my N52 528i last naturally aspirated in-line 6 by BMW. Have owned her for 9 years and she’s been solid. Then again, I don’t beat up on my car.
I agree, NA cars are still very sophisticated engines. The problem I see with turbos is the engine oil is heat stressed by its turbo cooling duty. With NA engines the max temp the engine oil is taken to is 200°C, but with turbos it is 400°C!. If the turbos had a separate oil cooling system that would be so much the better. The sweet spot is with supercharging as it doesn't require the engine oil for cooling. Also the new Audi 48Volt electric supercharger approach is IMO better for an ICE engine's longevity. But there's the added complexity. The N52 B30 has sufficient power with 250Hp for normal enjoyable motoring.
I have 178k miles on my n62 550i, I've also had it for 8 years and I redline it everyday do to how good it sounds, but it has been reliable for me as my daily since 2013 lol.
I had a BMW 750Li a few years ago and its V8 engine was drinking oil like a drunken sailor! I ended up trading it in, and subsequently heard the guy who bought it had to replace the engine. By far the most unreliable vehicle I've ever owned!
I've heard of problems with these engines but I've never had a problem with mine. Bought it new 2010 750li. Most reliable car I've ever owned so far. Installed a lower temp thermostat to prevent any issues 2 years ago. Doesn't use a drop of oil and I only change it once a year. Also use the CRC turbo and intake cleaner at every oil change to keep the carbon build up down. Only thing I've had to pay for was a battery and the first one lasted 8 years. It's always keep on a trickle charger when I pull it into the garage.
I bought a pre certified 2014 550i XI m-sport and had the car for 4 years and no engine issues with the V8. I do know the engine was refined in the 2014 model as opposed to the 2013 model. I traded that in and bought a pre certified 2015 X5 xdrive50i M-sport and I've had that SUV for 3 years and have had no engine issues at all with that one either. So far the V8 twin turbos have been very kind to me and I love the engine and power. I'm about to trade that in for a Pre certified 2018 X5M this coming week. Wish me luck.
Hi SlickRick, i just got my 2016 x5 xdrive 50i M-sport today, I am creazy about that car's performance. . Only the people who has engine issues will post their bad reviews on the internet, people without the issues, they won't say " My engine runs really well." That's the reason why people think that engine is not reliable as other BMW engines, and no car is perfect.
@@shushengwang391 Word! I had 2011 X6 V8 and drove it for 6 years with zero engine issues IN DUBAI! :) so 6 months in a year there is 45+ degrees Celsius heat! Did I had to top the oil more frequent? Hell yeah, but engine was working like a charm!
It’s a shame the V8’s are still suffering from cooling issues. I’ve been spoiled with the N20 - I’ve put 120,000 *hard* miles on it in my ‘14 3 series and have had absolutely zero issues. This is across long highway trips, hard driving, sliding etc. The ZF 8 speed transmission is totally solid as well. I do full synthetic oil changes at 3-4,000 miles and have had my transmission fluid changed - both things I highly recommend no matter what you drive.
That n20 is a 4 cylinder ? Or inline 6 ? I had a n52 328i that I was going to supercharge but never got around to it best and most reliable engine I have ever seen …
I brought an used X5 with 20K miles on it and it was a maintenance nightmare! From filling up the oil every month to electronic modules. I got rid of it and trade it in for an used Lexus RX 350! Never had any problems with the Lexus and no additional oil either! Service is much cheaper too!
I experienced the same problem with my BMW 328I it was such a bad oil problem and BMW just continuously lie to me and said that my car was in perfect condition but the oil was smoking I always had to change my oil all the time. Thank you for this honest review
Probably you need to change the valve cover gasket. I have a 428i I had the same problem engine started smoking on the left hand side and saw oil marks.
joe bloggs I’ve had 320i e92, auto e93, and a 325i e92 all m sport.. issues I’ve experienced so far include 2 recalls, vacuum pump failure where breaking system completely went with no warning, blower output disabled and changed as it could randomly set on fire, failed water pump, clutch kit repair, and shock absorber leaks.. each car owned at different milage points. All have been brilliant cars to drive BUT only when they work! I serviced the cars initially in line with the manual and service interval lights but over the years have learnt to service around 5k miles dependant on how often I drive it. Basically they offer a great driving experience but are expensive when they break down. Great car to have as a second car or project car but not reliable at all UNLESS you are confident to put in the work yourself, keep up the maintenance regularly and can source genuine OEM parts yourself or if you have a reasonable and trustworthy indy.
@@jasonb7265 Well you can contrast that with my experience over the past 20 to 25 years E30 325i E39 523i E34 525TDS E46 320ci E46 318ti compact E46 320d F20 118d E89 Z4 30i, 850i. admittedly most of those I bought with low miles but average age at time of purchase around 5 to 8 years except the 118d. Over this time apart from schedule servicing and wear and tear items (like batteries tyres etc) the only breakdown expenses I have had are EGR sensor on the 320d, power steering pump on the 320 ci when it was almost 15 years old and ignition coil pack and water pump / thermostat on the 5 series. I know where to get OEM replacement parts from without paying main dealer prices and even at the main dealers I get a discount and I have a trusty mechanic who is good and very reasonably priced. They do not cost me much more than any other car to keep on the road since I do not pay stupid labour rates. Another thing you must know is which drivetrain to pick if you want a BMW that is not going to burn a hole in your pocket, that means staying away from things like the N54 or the V8s etc. also when buying second hand the condition and how it's been looked after by the previous owner(s) is absolutely imperative if you are going have a hassle free ownership experience.
joe bloggs thats an extensive list! I can only comment on the e92 and e93 cars with the n52 engine. I knew nothing about cars, maintenance or DIY (nor did I have the inclination to) before owning at BMW. But my experience over the years meant hours of research online, joining forums and watching RUclips to help with self diagnosis of issues and finding reputable independents as well as preventative measures to ensure a lengthy driving experience. It’s definitely made me a more mindful/conscious car owner that’s for sure! From your experience, what are your thoughts on the 4 series - and what model and engine would you recommend?
@@jasonb7265 From my knowledge the N52 is basically a sound engine, I have this in my current Z4 30i, the main points to watch with this one is water pump thermostat and valve cover gasket both of which may go around 70 to 80k miles plus, another common issue with the earlier N52 is valve lifter ticking noise but that isn't harmful at all and just makes noise usually caused by lack of use, apparently the noise goes if hold the revs at 3000 rpm for a few minutes. Many of the later BMWs like the 4 series are proving to be much more reliable than the previous generation. My pick would be the B58 440i it's proving to be pretty reliable and is a very sweet engine.
my f10 v8 failed at 60k miles(a vanos spring was broken) and short time after fixing it, the timing chain broke during driving. now I have a x5m50d and a turbo failed at 64k miles. paid 4k to have it fixed. I will never ever again buy a bmw(I had around 14 until now, i was a big fan, but what's enough is enough)
So mate, basically you are saying consumers should buy and stick with old cars, E30, E36, E46, E90, F30 and all the other derivatives being the 5,6 and 7 series inline6 engines because BMW only makes one 6cylinder car now and its on its way out too...and its expensive, nomore options for the consumer..
Good video. As a retired service advisor, I always recommend to talk to a WELL EDUCATED service advisor or a shop foreman over which vehicles to avoid or seek. THEY are the people that see it all on a daily basis, the good and the bad!
I am really amazed from the n63tu! Their first engine(the 408hp n63 first gen) was still an Experiment, but the upgraded ones are superb. Realiability and consumption wise! I speak from personal experience. In our household we have 2 cars with that engine and no problems whatsoever. My f10 facelift has over 100t km (~62t Miles), and our other n63b44tu car - x5 - has over 180t km (~100t Miles)... we have done only oil changes, spark plugs changed ... and that’s about it.... we‘ve changed just fluids ... I would always buy it again! :)
Until recently I was a serial BMW owner and I had driven them exclusively for thirty five years. But each new one was less reliable than the one that preceded it. The final straw was my last 5-Series. Twenty six dealer visits in 60k miles.

William Egler Hint the new M5 was not introduced until 2018! Again this is about new models. See the record of the latest 5 series not the old M5 which is based on technology a decade old.
He said anything from 2013 - 2019. But the fact of the matter is no matter if it's a brand new 2021 or a 2001 BMW, BMW always builds each generation with its own set of problems. Just like the X5 from 2011 and previous years have had these same issues as well. The problem for BMW owners is none of these mechanical issues were on a recall list. It should have been but it would have cost BMW way more than they could afford to fix major mechanical issues that cost thousands of dollars even though it was BMW's own fault. But like a lot of automakers in today's time it's all about putting as much technology into these vehicles rather than mechanically solid engines and parts.
I sold my 08 550i with 290k miles no problems at all ran like a king , I got a 15 x5 50i now I have 70k miles never had 1 problem! Most people that buy BMW's in America are idiots that dont know how to do car maintenance them selves
Because there are also 2 types of owners--guys like you folks who probably maintain them--take them for the scheduled maintenence and use premium gas--and probably outright went and bought it or had the means to afford it.Sadly 90% of BMW and german car owners--get bamboozled by the allure of a high end car--get loan they struggle to pay--use normal gas instead of premium--skip oil changes--drive them to and from work in stop and go traffic>I looked at an X5M 2 months ago--chose to buy a stinger--X5M was a 2018 with 12k and was going for 60k--I could have still bought it outright--had the stinger and the X5 for a whole day each--then went on the forums--minor problems with the stingers--most complaints solved--forum for BMW--lawsuits--7to 10k engines and turbos blown--shitty treatment by dealers--dealers not having BMW M Techs at the particular dealer to fix the issues.I even see this at the car meets--and it is also seems to be Dodge guys also.These late 20--early 30 somethings obviously have loans on these cars--are hyped to dig--but then you catch them if they arenot doing anything--they put like 5 dollars of 87 gas in their cars--along with the normal joe and janes that do the same thing.I cringe when I see someone with a AMG--or M car--and they put normal gas in it.That shows you spent above your means and normal gas will adversely affect the car--even KIA told me if I ever have to use normal gas--it better have the next 4 tanks in between with premium.I own my stinger--and have 30k in the bank that I did not use to get the BMW--have my car insurance on autopay with the money attached for the next 5 years.Can afford the gas and maintenance--and also can afford some light mods.My stinger could blow up tonight and I could literally go and buy another one if I had too and let the legal system run its course--these folks that have paymenst have their necks in vices--and the first thing they do is sacrifice on the basics of a car--leading to these problems.I dated a lady once that had a supercharged range rover-100k car 10 years ago.She put 17k miles in 2 years on it and never changed the oil--stating to me she would change it when the light came on--she was well educated and when I think of people that buy these cars--I think of her.
Only ever seen 1 car with that many miles on in the uk. Your cars are probably in much better condition to as 70% of those miles are jo doubt 80mph motorway cruising.
I'm the owner of a 2014 535xi if you have a heavy foot yes you will be needing to definitely keep an extra quart of oil in trunk or before the 6k oil change oil light will come on I was hoping my next car to be the 550 n63 motor but I think I'll stick to the inline 6 540xi if I do purchase another bmw
I have a 2014 650ix with 45k miles and a few months back it threw the dreaded "Drivetrain Malfunction" message and the car would barely move. The BMW dealer suggested I have it towed but wouldn't cover the tow since it was beyond warranty. In the end, BMW replaced a high-pressure fuel pump (1 of 2) and 3 (of 8) injectors because they were leaking fuel. BMW covered the cost (since these are known issues) but 2 weeks later the check engine light is on again with the "Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold" code. Perhaps all that excess fuel messed up the catalytic converter. Bottom line: don't walk, RUN away from this engine.
@@genie52 I was doing research and I was reading on the turbo frying the valve seals and and sensors from the heat being generated. You're one of the lucky ones, it's what's holding me back from getting a X6 competition.
This is exactly why the fastest model isn’t always the best, we had no issues with our E36 325i, E46 330Ci, E39 530i, E53 LCI 4.4i, R60 1.6 TD (2013 Mini Countryman 1.6 turbo-diesel) and our current car, a 2017 F30 LCI 320d, 5 years and 60507mi later, absolutely no issues whatsoever.
N63 TU3 fixed all these issues. You are bring up the Tu an TU2. Please research before you make a video. I own a m50i 2020 with 30k miles no issues with burning oil. I also drive autobahn at 130 to 150mph daily.
Thanks for the "heads up" Mark. Its really to bad since bmw does make auto enthusiast machines ; If they are going to get so creative, they should only offer that package in one edition of the vehicle. Similar to the v10 M5 etc. This is great information to be aware of since many first time bmw purchasers may be unaware of such a serious problem.

I still say buy what makes life fun for you as I do since I own an n55 335 and e60 m5 which are both unreliable but as far as the dealer comments go, they always denu
For the n63 users get a custom hood with grills and upgrade intake that should lower the heat i notice my last n63 heat is the issue the oil issues will come up aswell
can you send me a picture somehow of the hood amd what kind of intakes i can upgrade too, ive got a 2012 750li with a recently remanufactured engine put in, sounds like a good idea actually
This is super old news bmw released the n63tu in 2014 (2013 in 550 gts). Since 2014 this engine has become much much more reliable. You're basically reporting problems from 2010 to 2013 in 2019.
Dude I’ve been anticipating this video from you, after my N63 experience, and not just high oil consumption, never ever again BMW. Such a shame as they are so good to drive but I’m over it and found peace after I got rid of it.

Lots of modern cars will use almost a litre every 1000. No its not good but very few car makers would do anything to fix it. Personally I think its the long service intervals worn out oil plus lots of heat will harden up seals fast. It will also gum up low friction oil control rings leading to further consumption. Best to change the oil when the CBS is half way through.
ExoticCar PlayPlace this is pure truth mark👍they are switching customers off 5w30 to 0w30 which is a thinner oil, and telling drivers yes get 10k miles per oil change, just add a quart of oil with no dipstick in place which is a complete recipe for disaster 😭🤣🤣🤣
@@ECPP yes, they are kind of stuck as new car buyers expect a long interval and actually make purchase decisions based on that. Furthmore used values are calculated on averages based on age, mileage and cosmetic condition. There is a new oil standard coming out next year that may help... I would still drop it twice as often as clean oil is always a good thing.
i have a 2011 bmw 550 xdrive that i’ve had for a few years now i drive the car pretty hard had it up to 150 mph multiple times all kinds of driving conditions and i live in the rust belt only thing i’ve done is a battery , alternator,brakes and tune up i love this car i think regular maintenance is the key not those long oil change intervals

I own a 1989 BMW 325 is. until 2007 BMW X 5 until 2019 trade in for a 2019 X6 , just a regular maintenance like oil change ( synthetic )every 7,000 miles , brakes and sensors if needed .
So, since turbochargers create way too much heat, it is bet to stick with 4 cylinder turbo because they are smaller and far away from radiator and some cooling components and also they don't produce as much heat as 6 or 8 cylinder turbos. Essentially there is lot of empty space in engine compartment for heat to dissipate.
before i had x5 50i i had 330ci 2001 for 10 years :D sold it in 2016 with 200k miles LOL never had to change coil plugs, manual transmision power, only oil adding and rock and roll baby !

After Recalls and Warranty Fixes, they keep Producing this Engine without Modification. Customers spent their Hard Earned Money on this Car and the least BMW could do is to make a Good Reliable V8 Engine. That is Very Bad Public Relations. I really appreciate your Video and I enjoy watching it.
I own a 2010 GT550i twin turbo that had excessive oil consumption. The dealership dropped the engine and replaced the oil seals at their cost, after BMW lost a class action law suit. I'm told some people had their entire engines replaced. The car runs fine now, except that the engine temperature is far above what I'm comfortable seeing. OEM's these days run the engines hotter than norma and BMW leads the pack in that respect. It's mainly to create a complete burn in the head. Hot temps create a cleaner-burning engine. Heat rises, so I don't necessarily think the hotvee concept is bad. Perhaps it's just a little too "efficient" i this design.
I thank God, I own a X6 M E71 with of course the S63 motor. I use 10-60w oil as spec'd for. I buy 10W-60 - Liqui Moly. When I first bought the car it used some oil but after a few oil changes I've driven 1k miles round trip to Canada and I use no oil. I can't explain why I was using some oil(1/2 quart/3months) and now none. The only thing I had to DIY is changing the water hoses near the turbo, they use metal lines and as the lines move further from the turbos it has rubber hoses, those will need change, common maintenance. I've read the motor is bullet proof, and I know BMW stands behind their product so they are fervent about their production cars. Example: When they started making the 4 cyl motor BMW tried to do everything to blow it, lock it up, and were unable to. I call that reliable. ANY car will need maintenance, and if there are issues BMW WILL stand behind it. If you abuse your BMW that's your fault. But I really don't know many BMW owners who don't take care of their BMW.
my f30 328i was pos after 100k miles it literally give me headache non stop all the plastic crap start cracking i live in a hot country so it kind of make those plastic part even more problematic not sure about bmw reliability i mean compare to a jaguar or Maserati maybe but not compare to a honda or toyota
@@ig6894 ok, what do you consider major work, my list of things to do from most 'major, to least is short, valve cover gasket, centerline water seal ( maybe), 02 sensors and some ecu gremlins that are showing false positives. Out side of regular fluid and consumable service.. thats it.
Hi Mark, I am still driving my 2014 BMW 535D and Love it. But I am looking into purchasing the New 2021 BMW M550. I now have second thoughts about it. Perhaps I should Consider getting the Extended Warranty or just Wait until the New M540i. BMW is such a Great Company but the Twin Turbo V8 Ruins it's Reputation. I am going to Cry myself to sleep, only my Cat can understand my feelings.
Horrible video. The N63 has been made a lot more reliable over the years. You are pointing at the one that is probably the most reliable itteration of them all. If anything, you should be pointing at a 2011-2013 550i, and not a new X5.

Looking at an 2016 X5 XDrive35i with 70k on the odo. Maintenance records at every 10k. New to the BMW scene but this car in specific meets my main needs as a people mover with sportyness for my growing family. Any advice on this engines reliability? I'm told it's a good version but your videos are super helpful and you sound like you are super well versed in this field.
They don’t make them to last they make them to destroy the rivals simple but trust me they could definitely make these motors bullet proof all comes down to profit in the end …..
I own a 2011 bmw 550i GT. I can say it does eat a lot of oil and it does get hot. But no big problems yet. But I am not sure why you said 2013-2019. They do have more horsepower and that might be the problem too
have the 2016 x5 50i, misfires on a single-cylinder, changed everything plug, coil, injector but the issue persist on that cylinder, what more can I do? engine change beckoning and this video of N63 issues wow!
I have a 2018 X5 50i with about 30k miles. I have to add one quart of oil between oil changes. The vehicle computer screen says “add two quarts”. It doesn’t say one…..it says two! I add one quart which satisfies the computer and within a month I get my regular scheduled oil change. “Currently” adding the additional quart is not an issue for me…….great vehicle !

2013 X5 550i .......Drive line and front CV Boot had to be replaced...Brakes all around ...coil packs for left and right banks..... Valve cover gasket oil leak really bad .... Knock sensors.... Replace the starter three times... was out of town on road trip each time we had a failed starter ..... the rear electric parking brake does not work..... had multiple cylinder misfire still don't know why ..but it cost $1800 to fix ......I'm pretty close to $35k for a car that's worth $15k to 17k on a good day... beautiful car with all the bells and whistles for that year alpine white with tan interior and with only 77000 miles on it and super clean ....don't walk away but run from any BMW with the n63 engine !
my bmw x5 2011 50i consume around 1 bottle of castrol 5w30 every 300 miles and who cares as longs as it dont leak i have 80k miles on it own it since 2016 ^^ still better than driving some camel SUVS ...
I have a 2013 BMW X5M with about 60,000 miles on it. I have been putting in a quart of oil every 3500 miles for about every 2 months over the last 18 months. Never had the problem during first 4 years of ownership. Is this related to the engine. My car is in service for 2 cracked suspension bags, some pump had to be replaced which cools the turbos and a coolant leak which needed some other less expensive pump replaced. The last 6 months haven’t been kind to my wallet. Looking to replace my beast but can’t find another I love. Put a deposit on the new RS6 wagon from Audi. Looks hot but not 100 %

I own a x5 5.0i 2016. It seems it comes with a revision N63BTU or N63B44O1. Anyhow, it has been a very reliable engine. I have some oil consumption, I use 2 liters every 4 months but I can live with that. Im scared now.
I am considering the 2021 X5 M50i with this engine. But I read somewhere that this engine has received a technical update and is improved over the original N63 in the previous generation BMW X5. Can you confirm this to be true?
I'm glad you did this video because I've had my eyes on the 640i and 650i convertible as my next up from my E93. I haven't had any problems running wise with my car since I bought it 3 years ago! Airbag and wiring harness recalls are only thing I had to do, and I don't want to end up with a money pit ride! I really like the six series ragtop, but I don't like them that much! Lol

I had a 2016 X5 50i. Drove it every day like I stole it. I had a tune and piggy back chips. Took it to track and drag strip. I put 75k miles on it in 3 years before getting a new X5, never had 1 issue with the motor. Never needed oil between oil changes. I also believe both turbos where mounted at the top of the engine. I'm not saying that this guy isn't wrong as friends have had to put lots of oil in their 50's.
LMFAO got a (2013 550i 54k) (x5 2016) both with massive oil issues, using 1 Litre oil per 200km both n63 engines not a hot climate New Zealand.. Approx 10k on maintenance in the past 6 months.
My 2013 650i burns 1 quart every 3000 miles.....and I drive pretty hard. The problem arises when people are just adding oil rather than changing the oil.
I own a x5 50i with 90k miles I put 20k miles on it and have been adding a quart of oil every 1,200 to 1,500 miles. I change my oil every 4-5k not what BMW recommends at 10k lol. I once came to them as my 5k where up previously serviced at BMW and they told me I had another 5k miles to go on a 0w30 oil, I asked them to change it now at 5k but they told me they couldn't company policy lol. Went to a local shop and they change my oil every 4-5k no problem with 5w40 Liqui Moly Molygen for the same price I get oil done at the dealer but with high end oil not "BMW Twin Power Turbo Oil" made by Shell in NJ. I'm very happy with the results. Proper oil changes cannot exceed 5k with the temperatures BMWs run at. Just becuase they are trying to save on gas guzzler tax and change oil not every 5k but 10k say they are saving ppl money on intervals. No thanks
@@ECPPI feel like that's where all the problems start with as far as oil consumption and wear and tear not lasting. 0w30 is a joke. My buddie has a e70 X5 M and uses the same oil I do and hes adds a quart of oil every 3,500 miles. Somthing to think about.

That is exactly how I landed in the euro cars myself, I drove Japanese cars for years and appreciated them for their dependability, but then I got a taste of a BMW and BOOM, I was sold after the drive. Better drive, more solid, more substantial and I never looked back. I had another revelation when I first experienced my first Porsche. Have you gotten sued yet? The N63 had issues at the start, but these were addressed by BMW for free, and by the time this video was made, the problems were addressed. You're standing in front of cars that did not have those problems in 2019 and by today, are running great.

By 30k miles I was complaining to the dealer over and over and over about putting oil every 4 days.
I drive between ny/ct every other day
They changed valve seals at 50k it never stopped drink in the oil
Now at 100k.. cylinder 8 misfire , blow spark plug over and over ,smokes,shudders.
So basically your buying a car that the engine is guaranteed to need major engine work or die on you every 50k miles.

The original N63 (2007-2013) is a real stinker. It ceased production in 2013. However, the newest version of the N63, the N634BBM3 (known as the “R”) has technical upgrades that conquer all historic issues including the valve guides wear. It was introduced in late 2018.

@@scringe1 I’ve checked out of the BMW scene for now. Ask your BMW for that engine’s service guide. It comes in a PDF form. Tell the sales associate you won’t buy the car unless the engine you’re referring to is either A. The next evolution of the N63 over the “R”, or B. a separate version which has the upgraded valve stem seals from the “R”.
I've owned at least 16 BMW's since 1998 of all different configurations. They were maintained to the letter at a dealership and have never had any engine warranty problem. Have had all different engines from the turbo 4 to a hand built M6 convertible. Nothing but great performance and never any engine issues.

As for the rest, I've not been in a BMW that wasn't lit up like a Christmas tree with faults. Don't get me started on the engines, which in M configuration, have been a well-documented, total and utter, unreliable disaster ... be it 6, 8 or 10 cylinders. And lest we forget the miracle of modern engineering which was the SMG gearbox (cough).

I own a 750i with a V8 Twin Turbo engine . Lots of power but the car is burning oil (between oil changes - which is normal) these engines have lots of torque and also producing lots of HEAT .
I will not recommend any V8 engine to nobody. The 6 cylinder will be safer to deal with .
I absolutely love my N52 528i last naturally aspirated in-line 6 by BMW. Have owned her for 9 years and she’s been solid. Then again, I don’t beat up on my car.
I agree, NA cars are still very sophisticated engines. The problem I see with turbos is the engine oil is heat stressed by its turbo cooling duty. With NA engines the max temp the engine oil is taken to is 200°C, but with turbos it is 400°C!. If the turbos had a separate oil cooling system that would be so much the better. The sweet spot is with supercharging as it doesn't require the engine oil for cooling. Also the new Audi 48Volt electric supercharger approach is IMO better for an ICE engine's longevity. But there's the added complexity. The N52 B30 has sufficient power with 250Hp for normal enjoyable motoring.
I have 178k miles on my n62 550i, I've also had it for 8 years and I redline it everyday do to how good it sounds, but it has been reliable for me as my daily since 2013 lol.

I had a BMW 750Li a few years ago and its V8 engine was drinking oil like a drunken sailor! I ended up trading it in, and subsequently heard the guy who bought it had to replace the engine. By far the most unreliable vehicle I've ever owned!

I've heard of problems with these engines but I've never had a problem with mine. Bought it new 2010 750li. Most reliable car I've ever owned so far. Installed a lower temp thermostat to prevent any issues 2 years ago. Doesn't use a drop of oil and I only change it once a year. Also use the CRC turbo and intake cleaner at every oil change to keep the carbon build up down. Only thing I've had to pay for was a battery and the first one lasted 8 years. It's always keep on a trickle charger when I pull it into the garage.

I bought a pre certified 2014 550i XI m-sport and had the car for 4 years and no engine issues with the V8. I do know the engine was refined in the 2014 model as opposed to the 2013 model. I traded that in and bought a pre certified 2015 X5 xdrive50i M-sport and I've had that SUV for 3 years and have had no engine issues at all with that one either. So far the V8 twin turbos have been very kind to me and I love the engine and power. I'm about to trade that in for a Pre certified 2018 X5M this coming week. Wish me luck.
Hi SlickRick, i just got my 2016 x5 xdrive 50i M-sport today, I am creazy about that car's performance. . Only the people who has engine issues will post their bad reviews on the internet, people without the issues, they won't say " My engine runs really well." That's the reason why people think that engine is not reliable as other BMW engines, and no car is perfect.
@@shushengwang391 Word! I had 2011 X6 V8 and drove it for 6 years with zero engine issues IN DUBAI! :) so 6 months in a year there is 45+ degrees Celsius heat! Did I had to top the oil more frequent? Hell yeah, but engine was working like a charm!

It’s a shame the V8’s are still suffering from cooling issues. I’ve been spoiled with the N20 - I’ve put 120,000 *hard* miles on it in my ‘14 3 series and have had absolutely zero issues. This is across long highway trips, hard driving, sliding etc. The ZF 8 speed transmission is totally solid as well.
I do full synthetic oil changes at 3-4,000 miles and have had my transmission fluid changed - both things I highly recommend no matter what you drive.

I brought an used X5 with 20K miles on it and it was a maintenance nightmare! From filling up the oil every month to electronic modules. I got rid of it and trade it in for an used Lexus RX 350! Never had any problems with the Lexus and no additional oil either! Service is much cheaper too!
Lexus IS a much better choice. BMW is a toy.

I experienced the same problem with my BMW 328I it was such a bad oil problem and BMW just continuously lie to me and said that my car was in perfect condition but the oil was smoking I always had to change my oil all the time. Thank you for this honest review
Probably you need to change the valve cover gasket. I have a 428i I had the same problem engine started smoking on the left hand side and saw oil marks.
We know some BMWs can be unreliable but I wonder how many negative commenters / haters here have actually owned a BMW
joe bloggs I’ve had 320i e92, auto e93, and a 325i e92 all m sport.. issues I’ve experienced so far include 2 recalls, vacuum pump failure where breaking system completely went with no warning, blower output disabled and changed as it could randomly set on fire, failed water pump, clutch kit repair, and shock absorber leaks.. each car owned at different milage points. All have been brilliant cars to drive BUT only when they work! I serviced the cars initially in line with the manual and service interval lights but over the years have learnt to service around 5k miles dependant on how often I drive it. Basically they offer a great driving experience but are expensive when they break down. Great car to have as a second car or project car but not reliable at all UNLESS you are confident to put in the work yourself, keep up the maintenance regularly and can source genuine OEM parts yourself or if you have a reasonable and trustworthy indy.
@@jasonb7265 Well you can contrast that with my experience over the past 20 to 25 years E30 325i E39 523i E34 525TDS E46 320ci E46 318ti compact E46 320d F20 118d E89 Z4 30i, 850i. admittedly most of those I bought with low miles but average age at time of purchase around 5 to 8 years except the 118d. Over this time apart from schedule servicing and wear and tear items (like batteries tyres etc) the only breakdown expenses I have had are EGR sensor on the 320d, power steering pump on the 320 ci when it was almost 15 years old and ignition coil pack and water pump / thermostat on the 5 series. I know where to get OEM replacement parts from without paying main dealer prices and even at the main dealers I get a discount and I have a trusty mechanic who is good and very reasonably priced. They do not cost me much more than any other car to keep on the road since I do not pay stupid labour rates. Another thing you must know is which drivetrain to pick if you want a BMW that is not going to burn a hole in your pocket, that means staying away from things like the N54 or the V8s etc. also when buying second hand the condition and how it's been looked after by the previous owner(s) is absolutely imperative if you are going have a hassle free ownership experience.
joe bloggs thats an extensive list! I can only comment on the e92 and e93 cars with the n52 engine. I knew nothing about cars, maintenance or DIY (nor did I have the inclination to) before owning at BMW. But my experience over the years meant hours of research online, joining forums and watching RUclips to help with self diagnosis of issues and finding reputable independents as well as preventative measures to ensure a lengthy driving experience. It’s definitely made me a more mindful/conscious car owner that’s for sure! From your experience, what are your thoughts on the 4 series - and what model and engine would you recommend?
@@jasonb7265 From my knowledge the N52 is basically a sound engine, I have this in my current Z4 30i, the main points to watch with this one is water pump thermostat and valve cover gasket both of which may go around 70 to 80k miles plus, another common issue with the earlier N52 is valve lifter ticking noise but that isn't harmful at all and just makes noise usually caused by lack of use, apparently the noise goes if hold the revs at 3000 rpm for a few minutes. Many of the later BMWs like the 4 series are proving to be much more reliable than the previous generation. My pick would be the B58 440i it's proving to be pretty reliable and is a very sweet engine.

my f10 v8 failed at 60k miles(a vanos spring was broken) and short time after fixing it, the timing chain broke during driving. now I have a x5m50d and a turbo failed at 64k miles. paid 4k to have it fixed. I will never ever again buy a bmw(I had around 14 until now, i was a big fan, but what's enough is enough)

Good video. As a retired service advisor, I always recommend to talk to a WELL EDUCATED service advisor or a shop foreman over which vehicles to avoid or seek. THEY are the people that see it all on a daily basis, the good and the bad!
i have a 2014 750li. i got it with 40k . i put 30k on it in 2.5 years. Never an issue .
I am really amazed from the n63tu! Their first engine(the 408hp n63 first gen) was still an Experiment, but the upgraded ones are superb. Realiability and consumption wise! I speak from personal experience. In our household we have 2 cars with that engine and no problems whatsoever. My f10 facelift has over 100t km (~62t Miles), and our other n63b44tu car - x5 - has over 180t km (~100t Miles)... we have done only oil changes, spark plugs changed ... and that’s about it.... we‘ve changed just fluids ... I would always buy it again! :)
Thanks for sharing. They are exceptional drivers but true, early versions were loose and smoky. Recent generations have been vastly improved.

Until recently I was a serial BMW owner and I had driven them exclusively for thirty five years.
But each new one was less reliable than the one that preceded it.
The final straw was my last 5-Series.

He said anything from 2013 - 2019. But the fact of the matter is no matter if it's a brand new 2021 or a 2001 BMW, BMW always builds each generation with its own set of problems. Just like the X5 from 2011 and previous years have had these same issues as well. The problem for BMW owners is none of these mechanical issues were on a recall list. It should have been but it would have cost BMW way more than they could afford to fix major mechanical issues that cost thousands of dollars even though it was BMW's own fault. But like a lot of automakers in today's time it's all about putting as much technology into these vehicles rather than mechanically solid engines and parts.

Because there are also 2 types of owners--guys like you folks who probably maintain them--take them for the scheduled maintenence and use premium gas--and probably outright went and bought it or had the means to afford it.Sadly 90% of BMW and german car owners--get bamboozled by the allure of a high end car--get loan they struggle to pay--use normal gas instead of premium--skip oil changes--drive them to and from work in stop and go traffic>I looked at an X5M 2 months ago--chose to buy a stinger--X5M was a 2018 with 12k and was going for 60k--I could have still bought it outright--had the stinger and the X5 for a whole day each--then went on the forums--minor problems with the stingers--most complaints solved--forum for BMW--lawsuits--7to 10k engines and turbos blown--shitty treatment by dealers--dealers not having BMW M Techs at the particular dealer to fix the issues.I even see this at the car meets--and it is also seems to be Dodge guys also.These late 20--early 30 somethings obviously have loans on these cars--are hyped to dig--but then you catch them if they arenot doing anything--they put like 5 dollars of 87 gas in their cars--along with the normal joe and janes that do the same thing.I cringe when I see someone with a AMG--or M car--and they put normal gas in it.That shows you spent above your means and normal gas will adversely affect the car--even KIA told me if I ever have to use normal gas--it better have the next 4 tanks in between with premium.I own my stinger--and have 30k in the bank that I did not use to get the BMW--have my car insurance on autopay with the money attached for the next 5 years.Can afford the gas and maintenance--and also can afford some light mods.My stinger could blow up tonight and I could literally go and buy another one if I had too and let the legal system run its course--these folks that have paymenst have their necks in vices--and the first thing they do is sacrifice on the basics of a car--leading to these problems.I dated a lady once that had a supercharged range rover-100k car 10 years ago.She put 17k miles in 2 years on it and never changed the oil--stating to me she would change it when the light came on--she was well educated and when I think of people that buy these cars--I think of her.

I'm the owner of a 2014 535xi if you have a heavy foot yes you will be needing to definitely keep an extra quart of oil in trunk or before the 6k oil change oil light will come on I was hoping my next car to be the 550 n63 motor but I think I'll stick to the inline 6 540xi if I do purchase another bmw

I have a 2014 650ix with 45k miles and a few months back it threw the dreaded "Drivetrain Malfunction" message and the car would barely move. The BMW dealer suggested I have it towed but wouldn't cover the tow since it was beyond warranty. In the end, BMW replaced a high-pressure fuel pump (1 of 2) and 3 (of 8) injectors because they were leaking fuel. BMW covered the cost (since these are known issues) but 2 weeks later the check engine light is on again with the "Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold" code. Perhaps all that excess fuel messed up the catalytic converter. Bottom line: don't walk, RUN away from this engine.
I almost purchased an x6 50i but decided on 35i x drive x6 knowing the 6 cylinder was a tried and true engine.

@@genie52 I was doing research and I was reading on the turbo frying the valve seals and and sensors from the heat being generated. You're one of the lucky ones, it's what's holding me back from getting a X6 competition.
This is exactly why the fastest model isn’t always the best, we had no issues with our E36 325i, E46 330Ci, E39 530i, E53 LCI 4.4i, R60 1.6 TD (2013 Mini Countryman 1.6 turbo-diesel) and our current car, a 2017 F30 LCI 320d, 5 years and 60507mi later, absolutely no issues whatsoever.
N63 TU3 fixed all these issues. You are bring up the Tu an TU2. Please research before you make a video. I own a m50i 2020 with 30k miles no issues with burning oil. I also drive autobahn at 130 to 150mph daily.
Thanks for the "heads up" Mark. Its really to bad since bmw does make auto enthusiast machines ; If they are going to get so creative, they should only offer that package in one edition of the vehicle. Similar to the v10 M5 etc.

For the n63 users get a custom hood with grills and upgrade intake that should lower the heat i notice my last n63 heat is the issue the oil issues will come up aswell

This is super old news bmw released the n63tu in 2014 (2013 in 550 gts). Since 2014 this engine has become much much more reliable. You're basically reporting problems from 2010 to 2013 in 2019.

Lots of modern cars will use almost a litre every 1000. No its not good but very few car makers would do anything to fix it.
Personally I think its the long service intervals worn out oil plus lots of heat will harden up seals fast. It will also gum up low friction oil control rings leading to further consumption.
Best to change the oil when the CBS is half way through.
I could not agree more. The extended intervals are only a marketing game for competitveness. Even synthetic should be changed semi- frequently

@@ECPP yes, they are kind of stuck as new car buyers expect a long interval and actually make purchase decisions based on that. Furthmore used values are calculated on averages based on age, mileage and cosmetic condition.
There is a new oil standard coming out next year that may help... I would still drop it twice as often as clean oil is always a good thing.

i have a 2011 bmw 550 xdrive that i’ve had for a few years now i drive the car pretty hard had it up to 150 mph multiple times all kinds of driving conditions and i live in the rust belt only thing i’ve done is a battery , alternator,brakes and tune up i love this car i think regular maintenance is the key not those long oil change intervals

I own a 1989 BMW 325 is. until 2007 BMW X 5 until 2019 trade in for a 2019 X6 , just a regular maintenance like oil change ( synthetic )every 7,000 miles , brakes and sensors if needed .
So, since turbochargers create way too much heat, it is bet to stick with 4 cylinder turbo because they are smaller and far away from radiator and some cooling components and also they don't produce as much heat as 6 or 8 cylinder turbos. Essentially there is lot of empty space in engine compartment for heat to dissipate.
before i had x5 50i i had 330ci 2001 for 10 years :D sold it in 2016 with 200k miles LOL never had to change coil plugs, manual transmision power, only oil adding and rock and roll baby !
The 330ci has rear subframe failure, eich cost 5k to fix it . and there is a lawsuit , you can google it.

BMW has been having Trouble with this Engine since 2008? Why wouldn't the Engineers just Fix it? I heard the N63 Twin Turbo V8 has gotten 2 Class Action Lawsuit? After Recalls and Warranty Fixes, they keep Producing this Engine without Modification. Customers spent their Hard Earned Money on this Car and the least BMW could do is to make a Good Reliable V8 Engine. That is Very Bad Public Relations. I own a 2010 GT550i twin turbo that had excessive oil consumption. The dealership dropped the engine and replaced the oil seals at their cost, after BMW lost a class action law suit. I'm told some people had their entire engines replaced. The car runs fine now, except that the engine temperature is far above what I'm comfortable seeing. OEM's these days run the engines hotter than norma and BMW leads the pack in that respect. It's mainly to create a complete burn in the head. Hot temps create a cleaner-burning engine. Heat rises, so I don't necessarily think the hotvee concept is bad. Perhaps it's just a little too "efficient" i this design.
I thank God, I own a X6 M E71 with of course the S63 motor. I use 10-60w oil as spec'd for. I buy 10W-60 - Liqui Moly. When I first bought the car it used some oil but after a few oil changes I've driven 1k miles round trip to Canada and I use no oil. I can't explain why I was using some oil(1/2 quart/3months) and now none. The only thing I had to DIY is changing the water hoses near the turbo, they use metal lines and as the lines move further from the turbos it has rubber hoses, those will need change, common maintenance. I've read the motor is bullet proof, and I know BMW stands behind their product so they are fervent about their production cars. Example: When they started making the 4 cyl motor BMW tried to do everything to blow it, lock it up, and were unable to. I call that reliable. ANY car will need maintenance, and if there are issues BMW WILL stand behind it. If you abuse your BMW that's your fault. But I really don't know many BMW owners who don't take care of their BMW.
my f30 328i was pos after 100k miles it literally give me headache non stop all the plastic crap start cracking i live in a hot country so it kind of make those plastic part even more problematic not sure about bmw reliability i mean compare to a jaguar or Maserati maybe but not compare to a honda or toyota

My 2011 335is has been great so far. It has 108,000 and still running great. My oil always shows on "Max". I change it every 5,000.

Hi Mark, I am still driving my 2014 BMW 535D and Love it. But I am looking into purchasing the New 2021 BMW M550.
I now have second thoughts about it. Perhaps I should Consider getting the Extended Warranty or just Wait until the New M540i.

Horrible video. The N63 has been made a lot more reliable over the years. You are pointing at the one that is probably the most reliable itteration of them all. If anything, you should be pointing at a 2011-2013 550i, and not a new X5.

Looking at an 2016 X5 XDrive35i with 70k on the odo. Maintenance records at every 10k. New to the BMW scene but this car in specific meets my main needs as a people mover with sportyness for my growing family. Any advice on this engines reliability? I'm told it's a good version but your videos are super helpful and you sound like you are super well versed in this field.

I own a 2011 bmw 550i GT. I can say it does eat a lot of oil and it does get hot. But no big problems yet. But I am not sure why you said 2013-2019. They do have more horsepower and that might be the problem too
My SA told me to just stay away from the V8 engines and stick with the I4 & I6.
One has to wonder about break-in procedures being observed.

have the 2016 x5 50i, misfires on a single-cylinder, changed everything plug, coil, injector but the issue persist on that cylinder, what more can I do? engine change beckoning and this video of N63 issues wow!
I have a 2018 X5 50i with about 30k miles. I have to add one quart of oil between oil changes. The vehicle computer screen says “add two quarts”. It doesn’t say one…..it says two! I add one quart which satisfies the computer and within a month I get my regular scheduled oil change. “Currently” adding the additional quart is not an issue for me…….great vehicle !

2013 X5 550i .......Drive line and front CV Boot had to be replaced...Brakes all around ...coil packs for left and right banks..... Valve cover gasket oil leak really bad .... Knock sensors.... Replace the starter three times... was out of town on road trip each time we had a failed starter ..... the rear electric parking brake does not work..... had multiple cylinder misfire still don't know why ..but it cost $1800 to fix ......I'm pretty close to $35k for a car that's worth $15k to 17k on a good day... beautiful car with all the bells and whistles for that year alpine white with tan interior and with only 77000 miles on it and super clean ....don't walk away but run from any BMW with the n63 engine !

my bmw x5 2011 50i consume around 1 bottle of castrol 5w30 every 300 miles and who cares as longs as it dont leak i have 80k miles on it own it since 2016 ^^ still better than driving some camel SUVS ...

I have a 2013 BMW X5M with about 60,000 miles on it. I have been putting in a quart of oil every 3500 miles for about every 2 months over the last 18 months. Never had the problem during first 4 years of ownership. Is this related to the engine. My car is in service for 2 cracked suspension bags, some pump had to be replaced which cools the turbos and a coolant leak which needed some other less expensive pump replaced. The last 6 months haven’t been kind to my wallet. Looking to replace my beast but can’t find another I love. Put a deposit on the new RS6 wagon from Audi. Looks hot but not 100 %

ExoticCar PlayPlace Yes. Toon one for a day. I can’t get over the new Haptic centre console. I find the glare from that and the large screen very annoying and distracting. The seats are also ok.

Anyhow, it has been a very reliable engine. I have some oil consumption, I use 2 liters every 4 months but I can live with that.

@@felphenix Check the Ignition Coils - Spark Plug Caps. Luckily my X5 has behave like a champ and no issues at all with the engine.

I'm glad you did this video because I've had my eyes on the 640i and 650i convertible as my next up from my E93. I haven't had any problems running wise with my car since I bought it 3 years ago! Airbag and wiring harness recalls are only thing I had to do, and I don't want to end up with a money pit ride! I really like the six series ragtop, but I don't like them that much! Lol
So far the B58 seems to be a bit more solid that the TT v8

I had a 2016 X5 50i. Drove it every day like I stole it. I had a tune and piggy back chips. Took it to track and drag strip. I put 75k miles on it in 3 years before getting a new X5, never had 1 issue with the motor. Never needed oil between oil changes.
I also believe both turbos where mounted at the top of the engine.
I'm not saying that this guy isn't wrong as friends have had to put lots of oil in their 50's.
LMFAO got a (2013 550i 54k) (x5 2016) both with massive oil issues, using 1 Litre oil per 200km both n63 engines not a hot climate New Zealand.. Approx 10k on maintenance in the past 6 months.

My 2013 650i burns 1 quart every 3000 miles.....and I drive pretty hard. The problem arises when people are just adding oil rather than changing the oil.

I own a x5 50i with 90k miles I put 20k miles on it and have been adding a quart of oil every 1,200 to 1,500 miles. I change my oil every 4-5k not what BMW recommends at 10k lol. I once came to them as my 5k where up previously serviced at BMW and they told me I had another 5k miles to go on a 0w30 oil, I asked them to change it now at 5k but they told me they couldn't company policy lol. Went to a local shop and they change my oil every 4-5k no problem with 5w40 Liqui Moly Molygen for the same price I get oil done at the dealer but with high end oil not "BMW Twin Power Turbo Oil" made by Shell in NJ. I'm very happy with the results. Proper oil changes cannot exceed 5k with the temperatures BMWs run at. Just becuase they are trying to save on gas guzzler tax and change oil not every 5k but 10k say they are saving ppl money on intervals. No thanks
