  • UPDATE: Now classified as "La Posa Plain"
(Strewnify) Quartzite, Arizona, USA - Thursday, December 28, 2023, 7:40 PM local time, A meteor fireball was observed heading southwest at 14 km/s, and ending at a height of 26 km above the ground. Meteorites have been recovered from this event!
Early reports indicated that the meteorites may have fallen on the Colorado River Reservation land, which is off limits to meteorite hunters. However, later data analysis revealed that most of the meteorites should have fallen on Arizona BLM land, which is accessible to meteorite hunters without a permit. Use caution when hunting this fall, and as always, respect private property and local laws. www.strewnify....

I live in Quartzite, I saw it come down and naturally being a mineral prospector I been going up to this site daily for weeks mapping and griding the entire strewn field, Last night and again today we finally started finding them as well as an Iron Meteorite from another fall probably long ago, it started to rust and was down 4in deep so its been there a while. Very interesting rocks. The ones I found have small thumb prints in areas and that classic charcoal black crust. Im debating slicing one of them but these LL Class rocks are so rare. I walked a total of 95 miles all on foot over ten days before I found my first space rock so these arent by any means easy to find especially not being magnetic, in fact to be honest its one of the toughest hunts of my 25yr career but totally worth it. What made us successful is several sleepness nights of crunching data, researching, going over drone footage, pictures, locations of previous finds ect.. all compiled together into one big block of data that gave us clues so it greatly narrowed the search area. One thing ill say is use judgement following the radar returns and maps of those returns, I found my biggest piece today far out of the data blocks on the radar maps so dont be afraid of venturing out because those particular radar maps arent 100 percent accurate

I am so sorry that I have been remiss to replying to you for the past 2 weeks. I am super pumped that you put science first in your hunt. Crunching the data and finding out where they are before you hunt is what I always say by hunting a target rich environment.
I would love to see any of the stones you were able to recover from this recent fall. Can you please reach out to me on Facebook or email?

My wife and I were camping at Plomosa Road BLM Camping Area Quartzsite A.Z. We saw it streak across the sky it started as a shooting star than it turned into a bright blue light with white sparks coming off it. Than came 2 waves of sonic rumbles. We will never forget it.

I was camping near Quartzsite the evening it fell, and the sonic booms were out of this world. I doubt that Sonny is just going to give up the find location information

Nope, Sonny is a poker player if you know what I mean. I would have loved to see that coming at me in the Quartzite desert. Seen, heard, and found!!!!

Are you using a metal detector ?

ok. I wont post any links etc but I have a question: Fusion crust - can crust be "erased" on entry/re-entry leaving a vitreous thumbprinty result? so that when it landed the crust was nearly all gone but for some (what I think is) Osbornite on a black diamond carbonado. MY THEORY IS 'YES' or the inside "rock" was harder than the outside crust and survived impact leaving a black diamond or serendibite? lol How's my arithmetic on this?

Anyways interesting story: 19Delta recon combat vet, been around rocks/gems since a kid so "some" knowledge. I made a koi pond for the property here in Ellensburg WA and had some river rock/lakebed rock trucked in (this came from prehistoric lakebed now kittitas valley) - but - a decades old rock/gem shop had estate sale and closed where I bought a bag 'o rocks. I take out the cool ones dump the rest near koi pond. As I walk around the pond I look at the rocks and spotted this one. I said aloud "I seen near every rock on the planet aint never seen this before - wait maybe its from off-planet" so my search began.

@russelljds "Black diamond carbonado" are not my area of expertise. I do know they are real. They are real small. People make mad claims about them. But, I am not the guy to ask about them.
