Get some Hexamine Blocks. Used them in the Army, they're a bit tougher to light (use matches = best result) but they work faster than that that stuff you used. Typically, I find 1-2 hexi blocks (condition dependent) are sufficient for heating/cooking rations.
Forgot to mention. Try and thing some mess tins that are either 1. thin and allow heat conduction better or 2. made of a material that is better at conducting heat.
I had bought some of those in the mid 90's. And I had just recently found them in my first bail out bag and thought of how many other fire starting materials I have used since then. Wet-Fire, Cotton Balls, Twine rope, Cotton w/Vaseline, Live fire and Feather wood. Thank for the video think I will use those up as they are toxic and not good to touch.
I would recommend putting it out with dirt or soil, but when you do, also uncover it and seal it in something so the chemicals don't leak into the ground and upset the pH of the ground where it was. Leave No Trace
Something that looks awesome is the Live Fire. The exact name is "Live Fire Original- Emergency Fire Starter." What it is is a tin with a sliding top & it has something like a mini-inferno on the inside (it completely comes out, by-the-way). You just mangle a part of it up a bit & strike sparks on it. This will last about 30 minutes to several hours, depending on how much air you give it (that sliding lip does that, as well as work like a handle). Something to look into, especially since that Live Fire will work with a ferro rod (and maybe even flint & steel- I don't see why a coal wouldn't work). That can be used for a lighting a fire, cooking, for light, and even for heat (you could sit down with your knees bent to make "walls" & wrap whatever type of blanket around them with a small fire in the middle). You can even sleep/doze like that! The same trick can be used in a trench with a small pile of dead, dry twigs (so it gets air & doesn't give off smoke). The whole thing is about the size of a Zippo with the flame lit & you can keep the twigs you're going to use try under the side of the blanket. If you hear someone coming, you can slide back, brush the dirt over the fire, and throw that pile of twigs out in whatever direction(s). Doesn't leave much of a track & you don't even need to stand up!
That looks a lot like the fuel used in hexamine stoves. They've been phased out too. According to a review site that compared various stoves and fuels for hikers, hexamine fuel is also toxic, so you don't want to breath the fuel or get the fumes in you food. We'd also have to wash your hands after handling the fuel or we'd be ingesting some of that toxin. For that reason, I chucked out my hexamine stove and have now gone with an alcohol stove. PS. When I saw the title of this video, the first thing I though of was 245 Trioxin: the fictional toxin that made people into zombies in The Return of the Living Dead. :-p -Itself, no doubt inspired by the real product used in the Vietnam war, called tetrachlorodibenzodioxin. -The active ingredient in "Agent Orange".
I have am old Boy Scout stove just like the one you used... Great for camping! Do you know what the blue stuff is? Perhaps something to make it start easier? My tablets I used were round & white, yet didn't start as easy. Any idea?

I'll look them up , thx
KGB Survivalist Hexamine blocks are a bitch to light if its windy though
KyleStorm666 torch lighter or zippo should solve that issue right?
I only had a zippo and matches at the time and the zippo wasn't very helpful. Torch lighter I'd expect would work perfectly
