    There are so many non-tropical flowers, that look tropical. I love it. Although I never hear much about Kniphofia in a tropical style garden?

    • @GeorgesJungleGarden

      There sure are! Kniphofias are great, there’s definitely some tropical looking varieties. They seem to feature in a lot of tropical gardens but they never seem to be the stars of the show unfortunately!

    It's a great seed collection you have. Love the monstera table cover also 👍. Main thing for me is getting the timing right with starting off my dry stored ensetes and dahlias. A great exciting time of the year. So much promise. Great video George 👍. Cheers

      Thanks! It’s actually a giant mouse mat but I thought I’d borrow it for this! Ensetes and Dahlias will be off to a slow start from next month for me, hopefully getting ready for the first or second week in May. You’re right, it’s one of my favourite times of year 😃

      Thanks! To be honest some banana plants (like Sikkimensis) can be a bit erratic to say the least so don’t feel it’s you that’s done anything wrong. Have you tried cycling the temperature up and down, I’m sure that’s one of the methods Jungle Seeds recommends?

    • @GeorgesJungleGarden
      @GeorgesJungleGarden  3 года назад +1

      Thanks Victoria! I very nearly put a slide in the video, unfortunately some plants like Musa Basjoo and Ensete Ventricosum Maurelii can’t be grown from seed and have to be propagated by divisions etc. The good news is that small plants are readily available in spring and usually pretty cheap! Great news on the bamboo, that’s progress!

      @@o000omusico000o I sanwiched the seeds between two damp cotton wool pads (kitchen towel would probably do the trick too) then in zip lock bags. Open the bags every few days to air them out. To dampen the cotton pads, you need to use about 1 part hydrogen peroxide (3%) to 3 parts bottled water to stop mould from growing. They need to be damp enough to feel it's damp but not dripping wet. Then I put the zip lock bag on a seed mat to keep them warm. Its my first attempt so I'm sure there are other ways of doing it but these are the instructions I followed and it seems to be working. I think the H2O2 is pretty key, the environment you're building for the seeds is perfect for mould and H2O2 kills mould. Mine have got a little mouldy but seem to be doing okay. Good luck!!! 👍

      @@GeorgesJungleGarden ohh I see. I did wonder why nothings showing up online. Of course they don't have seeds do they, wasn't thinking! Thank you 🙂Couple of weeks ago I ordered a Musa basjoo but a Musa Tropicana turned up, when I called up and said I needed exchange because the Tropicana would die in the garden, the guy told me it would be as hardy as the basjoo. Can you confirm this? From what I've researched I don't think it's true.

    • @GeorgesJungleGarden
      @GeorgesJungleGarden  3 года назад

      @@victorianicol-smith9436 No worries! You are correct, Tropicana is another name for Dwarf Cavendish which has nowhere near the cold tolerance of Basjoo, they won’t be happy under 10 degrees or so for long periods. Definitely a conservatory plant that can be brought out for summer rather than one that would stand a chance outside here!

    Hi George, wondering if you can give me some advice please. I potted up some Ricinus last Sunday (Blue giant and NZ Purple) inside a propagator on a heat mat on a window sill and a few of them have their cotyledons just coming up now. Should I be leaving them on the mat in the prop a bit longer or remove as soon as any sign of life appears and just sit on window sill? Cheers!

    • @GeorgesJungleGarden
      @GeorgesJungleGarden  3 года назад +1

      Hi Martin, if you don’t have a grow light then I’d get them on the window sill after germination because otherwise they’ll be growing extra quickly and get lanky. We’re nearly in April though so you should be fine either way though!

      @@GeorgesJungleGarden awesome I’ll get them out, I could do with the room in the propagator tbh haha! You don’t happen to have any advice for starting off Paulownia and Trachy seeds by any chance do you? @@martinburdon6905 There we go then, just use the propagator to get the seeds started then! Paulownia I don’t but Trachycarpus are really easy. You could probably put them in pots of garden soil outside now and they’ll come up soon enough! They don’t need very hot temperatures to germinate.

      @@martinburdon6905 No worries, you too! As it might get a bit colder next weekend you could hold off or start then inside but they’re tough plants and grow easily, it’s worth starting them in groups in deeper pots rather than trays too as they can stay in them for a couple of years.

    Hi George how do you germinate ricinus

    • @GeorgesJungleGarden
      @GeorgesJungleGarden  3 года назад +1

      Hi, I’ll probably pop up a video soon but they’re pretty easy to germinate somewhere warm in multipurpose compost. You can soak them for a day beforehand to speed it up but it’s not necessary in my experience.

    Don't suppose you know of any websites that have all the information for growing lots of different tropical seeds, at the moment (and yes left it very late and hoping not too late) but have 21 types of tropical seeds that need sewing, there were purchased from someone on FB in february but I have not been organised or had the space to grow them before this week. do have two new heat mats with thermastats so hopefully that will gove them a kick start. Sorry I keep throwing all my questions your way.

      @GeorgesJungleGarden  3 года назад

      @@OssyDL Hi Danny, I didn’t have much success with Manihot too unfortunately, they can be a bit temperamental when small and I think the seed has to be fresh. As for your first question, do you mean the boiling water or the actual germination in the glass? I’ve not tried the boiling water with other sorts yet to be honest! As for the germination, a lot of ‘tropical’ seeds benefit from a soak for a day or two but you generally pot them up before you see visible signs, these Cannas just developed very quickly with the boiling water treatment. Aloe Polyphylla germinate well in water but for most other species I’d get them in compost / soil ASAP.
