  • Full tour & 'how to' guide explaining how I created my own Tiny Tropical garden. I have included plant names and tips on how to plan your gardens tropical jungle layers to create the perfect microclimate in your tropical style garden.
First we look at my exotic canopy plants, these help to protect the garden from winds and help maintain a more constant temperature. These plants include tropical trees and e xotic giant grasses. This canopy is a key part of creating the right Subtropical microclimate in your garden.
Secondly we look at the mid-layer plants in my tropical style garden. These plants tolerate partial shade and include shrubs and large herbaceous perennials such as Salvias, Colocasia and Justicia.
Finally we look at the shade loving jungle floor plants. There are so many tropical plants that thrive in the summer shade of a tropical style garden, including Begonias and Impatiens.

The Rex begonias don't love growing outdoors, mine loved it in the terrarium, but when I moved it out of the terrarium it declined and it is not looking that good now in the greenhouse. So my recommendation is to grow it in a terrarium with light over indoors only. Good luck with your Rex begonias.

Enjoyed your garden tour. I started a new mini Food Forest cum Tropical Pleasure Garden this spring here in Florida and opted for a white "puff ball tree". That is what we affectionately call the Persian Silk Tree around here. It's so pretty and silky you just want to pet the little puffballs every time you walk by:). Totally carefree, we have two red ones already, but I chose a white flowering variety to visually cool the new area during our brutal summers.
I agree those Fatsias are fun plants. Now I'll have to add at least two. I suspect my mystery plant in another part of the garden may well be a Fatsia - it has those same leaves but they are variegated, Irish green and creamy white. I may try a cutting once the Canopy is a bit denser - the bananas and Alocasias got huge since March (the bananas have pups - one pup is already 8ft tall, but all in all it is still a rather sparse garden area.
I've added about twenty new plants this fall not counting a Rio Grande cherry tree, a Macadamia nut tree, an Australian Mintbush and three coffee bushes. I succeeded in growing three Pride of Barbados from seed - with cherry/rose and vanilla blooms. I'm thrilled about those, now I just hope my Ricinus "Carmencita Red" will grow from seed too - we'll see.
Anyway, thanks for an inspiring tour - awesome garden.

Rex begonias, which I love, like to dry out between waterings. My first plant almost died. Rather than throwing it out, I let it dry out and it started to produce new shoots. Now it's growing happily and looks beautiful. Good luck

I love your new videos, but I also find myself rewatching some of the old ones.
I actually had better luck with the Rex begonia this past year in my greenhouse.
I might be that they like the late summer/fall better when it’s not as warm in the greenhouse.
I had it closed up and my begonia were in there until almost December before I put them into the basement for overwintering.

Hey Craig. Thanks for the great videos (also the little castor beans I ordered from you last year are now towering over me in their spiky iridescent glory; the best £2.50 I ever spent!). I'd love to see a video about an ideal soil preparation for a tropical garden. I am planning to make a big border from scratch and want to give the plants the best possible start. I know that it should be rich and free draining, but what are the best things to use to make that happen? I heard the forest floor is slightly acidic, should that be emulated? How deep do you need to dig? Are there any fertilisers or soil improvers that would help in particular etc...I'd also be interested in tropical garden design - what plants work well together, how to make a satisfying naturalistic effect - how to plan a border out from scratch etc...
