    Fun fact: the bus you took is route 2 from Star Ferry Pier in Tsim Sha Tsui to So Uk Estate in Cheung Sha Wan, it is actually one of the oldest bus routes starting service in 1927 if I remember correctly
    The bus you took is a Volvo B9TL (from Sweden) and it’s frame is from Wright’s Eclipse Gemini 2, which is from the UK lol
    License plate is VC5470, fleet no AVBWU690, and it belongs to the Lai Chi Kok depot of KMB (Kowloon motor bus) and as of today 2024/07/20, it is assigned to route 30X right now

      There's a lot of 'em. If I remember rightly I think ADL used to sell the Enviro 500(?) double rear axle buses to Hong Kong. Also, the journey you took from the airport might've been on a train originally developed by BREL, taken over by ADTranz and taken over by Bombardier. Here, they're related to the ElectroStar trains, previously used by the London Tilbury Southend line. A damned good train back in the day. Mind you, that said its been a just a few years since I was there so they may have replaced them in the meantime.

    About the guy in the pub, I felt like he is not quite happy that you mentioned hong kong british history. It may just a politically sensitive people. It is common.
    And sharing a fun fact, you don't need to tell the bus driver where you going to. I known it is different than UK. LoL.

From now on I'd always tell my friends "I'm heading home - So U.K."! 👍👍. BTW £4 for the mushrooms is dirt cheap - they're selling it for £2.5 in the UK so the add-on is mild considering the huge fuss transporting fresh produce all the way! Local Hongkonger here, just sth to comment
    0:36 "So Uk Estate" - pronounced as "So ook", this is a public housing estate, similar to what you call "council housing" in UK
    0:48 A major difference between HK and UK double deckers is that, in HK, the vast majority are 3-axle, while the ones in UK are 2-axle
    0:57 In HK, most routes do not have two-way sectional fares. You do not need to speak to the driver to which destination you want to go, just tap your octopus/alipay/contactless. On routes where two-way sectional fares apply, tap your card again before you get off.
    2:39 "Bowring Street" is pronounced as "Boh-ring", named after John Bowring, 4th colonial governor of HK

    Some very vocal demographics in Hong Kong constantly complain that the British-ness is all gone or is constantly being taken away. As someone who has lived in both colonial and post-colonial Hong Kong, I find it funny how some people simply refuse to put down their rose-coloured glasses of nostalgia.
    Culturally, the general population of Hong Kong has NEVER been very British at all. Their education followed the British system but their customs and lifestyles have been 80-90% Chinese all this time. High tea, scones, pubs are not part of the working class lifestyle unlike the UK--my only friends who do it are those actually from the UK. Wanna find a great fish and chips, good luck, maybe in Central and it'll cost ya more than a hundred quid HKD.
    All the superficially British things such as the transportation and infrastructure, still carry the same distinct flavour. The buses turning from bronze to red in 2017 made Hong Kong's fleet even more like London. Not sure if that was coincidence.
    Culturally, I personally feel that Hong Kong has in fact become *more internationalised* after the return to China.
    Anyway, great video and great to see you enjoying Hong Kong for what it is. Still an incredible place after all these years.

    I fell off my chair when I saw your reference to "So UK" on that bus destination, it is a town (or estate) full of public housing in Hong Kong but you should go over there to see how 'UK' this town is you would be disappointed as there was not even a pub or cafe or fish and chip shop in this "So UK" town....

    Hong Kong seems to have done well to maintain its identity after Colonials left. Not so lucky parts of Asian looking India, who were flooded by people from the mainland and lost, loosing its identity when they left.

    • @canto_v12
      @canto_v12 3 месяца назад +2

      Not sure which other regions you are referring to in Asia. India had thousands of years of history before Britain so it’s natural for them to revert after independence.
      Hong Kong is different, it was a very sparsely inhabited area before the Brits and had relatively little history to fall back on after the handover to China.

    • @tylert9875
      @tylert9875 3 месяца назад

      @@canto_v12 I am referring to Asian looking parts of Endia, very uniquely defined parts, along the himalayan foothills, from the west to the east and then the jutland in the east. They have their own history, or lack thereof any, from the mainlands. Most of of them still have legally politically autonomous identities. Hard to say a nation has its own history when the very word for it is an alien word of recent origins (In Dios, In God's name).
      Nothing wrong with saying it's a British mess, in the other direction.

    I live in Europe, most of the time when someone wanted to talk about HongKong they gave the statement that they don't think HK is a part of China, when I asked why not they really couldn't give a proper answer.
    Then I asked whether they knew anything about the history of HK, they couldn't answer still, some gave the answer ''it doesn't matter.''
    They care so much about the people in HK yet they don't bother knowing anything about the culture and history of HK, I guess it makes sense.
    I truly believe the issue of HK, Xinjiang and Tibet are means to critisize China, not that they want to see those people having a better life.
    The bottomline is China hasn't been in war for more than 40 years.

    i like your vlogs about discovering the true life in those places. But just a piece of friendly advice: whenever u are stopped for shoting, simply stop immediately and aplogize friendly to show your politeness and respect and don't try to shot there or the related persons again except they accept your explanation and allow u to resume, because many people don't like to be spotted especially by a stranger or even a foreigner, no matter what country what city you are, although u only get them in your phone camera without any intension

      Hello mate! Yeah I agree you get these kinds at home, especially in London. Thats why I felt it was perfectly fitting for a video about all things British 😆

    (I am in Hong Kong atm)
    Anyways, I do adore Hong Kong although with the recent years of it being brung close to mainland China has made me not want to move there in the future. It is a great place for a multiple holidays though! 👍
