Today, we had our first outdoor training session since the summer break. It was an experiential learning program. We paired two students as buddies wherein each was given the role to take care for themself and their buddy.
Students were taken for a hike up on Gandhi Tekri hill at SGNP. The purpose of the activity was to strengthen bonds; students manoeuvred through the bushes all the while ensuring that their buddies are doing and keeping well. They tended to each other and helped one another out of the twigs, guided themself and their buddy out of the tangle of branches, towering trees and encouraged each other to keep persevering despite the heat.
Values such as that of togetherness play a vital role in our lives. Whether it is in a dojo, a championship, at a demonstration or outdoors, we make it our mission to help our students comprehend the importance of companionship and uplifting those around us.
‘Help your buddy up and achieving milestones will simply be effortless.’
Next, we worked on overcoming our fears by crossing the dilapidated railway bridge at SGNP near the Krishnagiri Upwan station. The wooden sleepers are prone to further damage if stepped on haphazardly or in a hurry.
Learning must always be powered by a motive and this activity was centered around the doing away of fear. Like any other emotion, fear is also an emotion which inadvertently causes anxiety in an individual. To keep this anxiety from rising and restricting the individual, one needs to take calculated risks and proceed. Training and positive visualisation comes to one’s rescue here. It is not certain if one will reach the other end of the bridge but if they think they do and take steps accordingly, they might just gallop and come out as a victor. One will not know unless one tries. To take a leap of faith requires courage and the bridge we visited today was our way to being courageous.
Students were shown the way across. Having received the instructions and encouragement throughout, each crossed the bridge successfully hence, believing in themselves and nurturing a positive mind-set.
During combat in karate in a dojo or on a tatami, the opponent is unknown so is their strategy of scoring points. One must stay calm and paired with the right training, step in with full zest and vigour to view victory becoming theirs. Having a positive mind-set therefore, goes a long way; as does staying calm and conscious.
We worked on our balance after by trekking up and down the hill at Gandhi Tekri through a lesser-used forest route.
In karate, we learn about the importance of stances to move on either sides with ease, without losing balance of one’s body and maintaining the CG (centre of gravity) is important. This exercise was a contribution to just that. While walking up a hill through a knot of thorns and abundance of shrubs, one is required to distribute the weight of their body in a manner that supports their climb. One’s stance comes into play, ergo this trek marked as the perfect test of the stances one learns in dojo.
The final activity for the day focused on inculcating the most essential of values: sense of responsibility. It was carried out by engaging in picking up the plastic waste left unattended and caused by littering. Students and their parents partook in picking up the garbage to then dispose it all in the garbage collection box thereby taking responsibility towards keeping our surroundings clean, preserving our forests and protecting wildlife.
