Jacob Hoss Robeson was a true American genius! How many young Black people even know who he was? He sang this song from the heart - like Frederick Douglass would have sung it!
Steven Yourke Far fewer people know if Robeson than they should do. The reason? He was a communist, so his government consistently undermined his musical career, blacklisting him several times and even putting him on trial in the 1950s. A truly great talent stamped out by government oppression.
When I was told to in college, while studying voice, to find and listen to masters, I chose Paul Robeson as one of them. He has such a commanding and powerful voice. Even though singing professionally didn't come through for me, to this day, he is one of my idols.
How could anyone think that a group of people who had the ability to produce such profoundly spiritual and beautiful music could be inferior in any way.
This gives me cold chills...considering that his own father was an escaped slave, this song had to hold deep personal meaning for him. I think that's why this performance is so powerful.
I owe a great deal to one Harriet Tubman. Without her helping Paul Robeson's father to escape there probably would have been no Goddaddy, no Aunt Essie, no Paul Robeson, Jr. and my life would have been so unbearably boring.
I am a man, and this man has one of the great gifts ever given a mortal. There haven't been many to compare him with. When you think of power in the human voice, Paul Robeson is front and center, and he was recorded in the 30's!!! That's quite the test of time. 80 years and nobody has surpassed him. A few have come close, but nothing quite to his level of performance.
We should remember that none of this was sung or recorded with digital enhancement. His was the voice of conscience in America and it */still/* thunders forth from the soul of the oppressed.
I introduced many young kids to this genius of a man at a church service during Black History month, 2019. Guess what? Many of the adults (upper 30's) never heard of him, either. Let's all spread the word and re-introduce Mr. Robeson to this young generation, ok?
I know. But there is nothing I can do. First and foremost Goddaddy was Antifa, he called himself " violently antifascist " so like Luke Skywalker I became Antifa myself. I've been fighting the Ukrainian Nazis since 2014. But I do have tons of ideas for presentations- especially considering the fact that I just found out that this brilliant Black historian wrote a book about Paul Robeson's wife, Eslanda Robeson. Maybe in a couple of years.
When I was younger I worked in a restaurant as a cook and whenever it was time to start letting people go for the night, the manager would stand at the end of the line and sing "LET MY PEOPLE GOOOOOO". It took me like 7 years to realize what that it was a song.
I heard Paul Robeson twice in the 1950s. Once in Wales and once playing Othello at Stratford (UK) The piano accompaniment on this song is by HT Burleigh. He was an African/American classical singer and composer. Well worth googling. His accompaniments are a joy to play and sing. I have several books of his spiritual arrangements. My late brother used to sing many of them in local concerts, including Go Down Moses. Thank you for posting this.
Do you mean Burleigh is actually playing the piano in this recording, or is it just his arrangement? I knew Burleigh mentored Robeson, but it would be really great to have a recording they worked on together.
Paul Robeson sang and spoke about Jesus's teachings on justice, truth, LOVE in all coubtries he visuted. What polital view did Jesis hold? Give governing organisations, what is theurs by human law, while folliwing the law if LOVE
Antifa darlings. First and foremost Goddaddy was Antifa. He hated the Nazis with a passion. Maybe that's why my favorite Avenger is Steve Rogers. " I hate bullies. I don't care where they're from. "
Моё сердце одновременно наполняется слезами, состраданием, болью и верой о неизбежной победе добра над злом- как бы долго этого не пришлось ждать. Такие произведения являются катализаторами. Браво! Брависсимо! Морозова.
I've heard multiple renditions of this song, and I have to say, this is THE BEST one. Robeson's voice gives off a truly terrifying, worthy of the themes that the song speaks about.
A man of God who stood up to the powers of his day to say enough was enough in the face of adversity and inspired others! This song is soooo powerful not just because of the technical brilliance but the overriding passion that you can't help but hear in his voice. The message God had written on his heart was clear for all to see and hear. May God bless him and thank you God for his awesome life!
When Israel was in Egypt land, Let my people go! Oppressed so hard they could not stand, Let my people go! Go down, Moses, Way down in Egypt land, Tell old pharao To let my people go! "Thus spoke the lord", bold Moses said, Let my people go! "If not I'll smite your first-born dead!" Let my people go! Go down, Moses, Way down in Egypt land, Tell old pharao To let my people go!
Incredible, the voice of god. If the good lord joined the angels in a sing along this would be the voice. How appropriate because this could be the ballad for oppressed people everywhere. The black man in America had their finest champion in Paul Robeson. Incredible talent and character.
MY GOD!!! A Beautiful, Eerie Vocal!!! Such Power, Pain, and Authority in his voice! Black People, in particular, can feel this song. God Bless Mr. Paul Roberson!
This version is so dark and depressing, and yet I really like it. When he said "Oppressed so hard they could not stand" I felt it in my bones. I feel like this is how the song is meant to be.
Revelation 19:6~"Then I heard what seemed to be the voice of a great multitude , like the sound of many waters and like the sound of many thunderpeals , crying out , ' Hallel u Yah !!! For the Lord Our GOD the Almighty reigns.'
Isn't he just fantastic! I never heard of Paul Robeson before today; I was searching for Kate Smith singing Precious Lord and found him. Used to sing Go Down Moses in school; loved it so much I sang it to my kids and now my grandkids. He has a very commanding voice. Wish I could find him singing Precious Lord Take My Hand!
I'm here because I saw a collection of photos of biblical legends photographed with the probable correct ethnicity portrayed. It's a great collection of photos, but even better for the one that brought me here, because of a comment on the feed. I had forgotten this legendary man (how could I..?!!!) and it is a joy to hear him again.....
sam s Sam, what are you talking about? I am speaking about the struggle that was during the time of Moses and the word "black" evidently...U don't know its meaning or heritage.
Hellooooooo....It's history and if you know how the world began, you would not have responded about a metaphor. I don't have to research the song......I live it daily in the USA! Racial profiling, cops killing, and the now fantasy of those still trying to live the "white" supremacy rule. What a bunch of crap! This is the 21st century. No longer I am subjected to the snuffing of facts that are definietly trying to suppress the "truth." The truth has set me free!
Русский Космонавт +Русский Космонавт Africans in slavery created the song as a Spiritual. They held strong beliefs in Christ and felt the story of Moses was of particular significance to them. They experienced similar tribulations as the people of Israel. They sang these sorrowful songs and devoted much of their lives to religion in hopes that Christ would free them from bondage as Moses did the people of Israel.
Robeson's voice is so deep, so rich, so POWERFUL... You can almost hear the thunder rumble and the lightning crack as the seas crackle in the background...
Paul Robeson is mentioned by L. Ron Hubbard in a Scientology lecture which I listen to now. I went to see who he was talking about. Glad I did. Amazing voice.
Wonderfully sung! Such justified emotion! I say justified because History tells us that native Africans were kidnapped from their native land to be used as slaves in the U.S. It's one part of our history in this country that I certainly am not proud of! Liz
My mother played me Robeson 78s when I was a kid, she became a fan of his when he came to London in the 30s. One day someone will make a bio-pic of this truly remarkable, talented and flawed human being.
This is Beautiful, but I can't help thinking about that old American Idol episode of the dude's audition singing this song....and Randy & Paula dying laughing LOL!!!
Vilified, driven from the American stage - hmmmm, wonder why? He was a giant among performers and had one of the most magnificent voices ever to sing. A man of integrity, too,

The beauty of his life and commitment to others was acknowledged recently by none other than Harry Belafonte.
This man was touched by the grace of God for having such a beautiful voice... How I would like if he had sung/recorded some duets with my other favorite singer, Mahalia Jackson, who was also touched by the grace of God, imho...

My dearest uncle figure was wrong. Paul Leroy Robeson spoke 20 languages. But Paul Jr's Russian was excellent. He puts me to shame and I was born in a totally Russified Kharkiv!

If ever a human voice could call thunder down from the heavens, this is it. Paul Robeson was a peerless vocalist and a truly great American.
Jacob Hoss Robeson was a true American genius! How many young Black people even know who he was? He sang this song from the heart - like Frederick Douglass would have sung it!
Elton Laleham
You're in rather poor company in holding that opinion.
+Jacob Hoss There hasn´t been an American voice so spiritual than Robesons' and, as you point out, human. God bless.
Jacob Hoss ttttvvvvvvvvvvvttvvtvvvvvvv

Theres still time. Train that voice ! Pursue that dream!
He's amazing
How could anyone think that a group of people who had the ability to produce such profoundly spiritual and beautiful music could be inferior in any way.
Ans: Bysimple projection: inferior people.
Well militarily they were. Intellectually perhaps not.
One of the most godlike and powerful voices any human being will ever posses, truly a legend... R.I.P
Brilliant. Never has there been another with a voice like him.
You forgot James Earl Jones!
James Earl Jones should have played Goddaddy. Even if only off off Broadway.
I am a man, and this man has one of the great gifts ever given a mortal. There haven't been many to compare him with. And intelligent

I woke up this morning with this music in my head 🎶 thank you father. I don't know the reason but I am listening.
Поль Робсон наш! Поколение СССР знают и ценят его! Мне с детства говорили, что у меня губы как у Поля Робсона! Значит мы вообще одной крови! 🤗

9 years later Russia invades Ukraine 💀
What a beautiful voice.

Robeson. Yes. Pharaoh was symbolic of the American government and Jews were symbolic of the plight of African people in America.
Вот это голос !!! Благо дарим Тебе, лучший исполнитель со-
светской песни " Широка страна моя родная". Вечная память.
BOB FROM FRESH PRINCE BROUGHT ME HERE. PEACE OUT BOB!
Lolll same :") xD
And me kkkkkk
just watched that!
Omg.. That voice.. That strong heavenly voice...
Faz mais de 60 anos que admiro a voz de Robeson. Que bom ouvi-lo agora. Grato pela postagem.
This version is so dark and depressing, and yet I really like it. When he said "Oppressed so hard they could not stand" I felt it in my bones. I feel like this is how the song is meant to be.
SLAVERY IS DARK AND DEPRESSING AND REALITY
Revelation 19:6~"Then I heard what seemed to be the voice of a great multitude , like the sound of many waters and like the sound of many thunderpeals , crying out , ' Hallel u Yah !!! For the Lord Our GOD the Almighty reigns.'
I've loved this voice since I was a young woman --- a long time ago. A thrilling voice and a great man.
FEARSOME, and fear-inspiring. I needed to hear this, sometimes I have the tendency to "forget" who's in charge.
One of the greatest performers ever. Paul Robeson was a colossus of music. A man of dignity who had great courage. A wonderful human being.
Try Mahalia Jackson. Kate Smith is not in that league of great voices.
A voice directly from the heavens, directly from the first civilization.
Yes, he was indeed an African!

Paul Robeson NAILED this song. Absolutely nailed it. No question.
Another Classic! This song depicts the struggle of the African Slave. A wonderful song to reminisce.
this is about Moses and freeing the Jewish people from the pharroh not blacks what are you talking about

Paul Robeson was a man of men. Few are as high as he. A very great man in his time.
This is probably the nicest song I ve ever heard and I m a 17 year old male who usually listens oldschool rap ...
no one cares
Why do you reply then ? :D
Herrmann Wiesbach To let you know for future reference that no one cares?
LET MY PEOPLE GO.
It almost sounds like the very voice of God himself
God this makes me want to cry 😢 Happy birthday Sir Paul and rip you are remembered happy Passover to those that celebrate
WHAT A FANTASTIC VOICE AND SONG
Господи ! У меня просто слов нет ! Какое счастье , что сейчас все эти записи стали доступны !
Not only did he sing with great soul, he was a beautiful "Neshama"(soul)!
It’s crazy I’ve only now heard of this man
Robeson's voice is so deep, so rich, so POWERFUL...
You can almost hear the thunder rumble and the lightning crack as the seas crackle in the background...
Beautiful! Wish I could have met Paul Robeson, what a voice. Wow!
Paul Robeson is mentioned by L. Ron Hubbard in a Scientology lecture which I listen to now. I went to see who he was talking about. Glad I did. Amazing voice.
Wonders filled great job! Long live Paul Roberson el gran hombre! Viva el revolucion internacional!
Wonderfully sung! Such justified emotion! I say justified because History tells us that native Africans were kidnapped from their native land to be used as slaves in the U.S. It's one part of our history in this country that I certainly am not proud of! Liz

¡Excelente, que voz, que divina voz, gracias por compartir!
My mother played me Robeson 78s when I was a kid, she became a fan of his when he came to London in the 30s. One day someone will make a bio-pic of this truly remarkable, talented and flawed human being.
🎉 Great singer. Incredible voice
heard it many years ago. when Iwas in the states. Very moving.
That was awesome. My daughter sent this to me and I am very happy that she did.
Paul Robeson was an amazing man he was not only the most amazing baritone he also was very political and helped the civil rights movement.
Love Robeson and love this song. His singing is so powerful and reflect so much of the struggle of his day and before.
This man is on the list of people I would go back in time and meet
This is Beautiful, but I can't help thinking about that old American Idol episode of the dude's audition singing this song....and Randy & Paula dying laughing LOL!!!
Just discovered this brilliance from a piece on NPR today. Wow!
I don't know much about Paul Robeson but I LOVE his voice! I just became a fan!
Vilified, driven from the American stage - hmmmm, wonder why? He was a giant among performers and had one of the most magnificent voices ever to sing. A man of integrity, too,
What a voice! Gives me goosebumps.
Love it. Powerful voice - "god father first person" worthy.
One of the first songs I ever heard ... I was very Young. My mother just played it as she saw it ... Janey

I can see that Robeson is a smiley and chill man, but his songs are mostly mellow and sad
This man was touched by the grace of God for having such a beautiful voice... How I would like if he had sung/recorded some duets with my other favorite singer, Mahalia Jackson, who was also touched by the grace of God, imho...
He could have had an easy life but he chose to stand up for his beliefs. A real American hero!
You are filled with the Spirit..It makes me vision the bondage of my people Jewish and Irish..philillie
One of the truly great talents that strove to make a difference. One of my all time heroes
Lovely song, lovely voice. Very taleted and complicated man.
Let my people go America
Fresh Prince Of Bel Air!!!
We all are brothers in Christ people Merry Christmas from south Poland 2 u all!!!
He was such a wonderful man. If only the former USSR would finally release where he is buried and what his life was like when he left the US voluntarily. A great talented man. If only the mindset was more free at the time of his life, he would have been a huge success in life here.
Черный Шаряпин! Браво!!!!!!❤️

Such a powerful voice. Always perfectly on pitch.
He was a great man. I lived through the '50s when he was persona non grata. He was a scholar, a linguist and even an athelete at Rutgers.
He was an inspiration to black intellectuals.

had to listen to this song again. Resurrection Saturday
I don't know what brought me here. I just got the words "let my people go" pop up in my head. xD Thank you, head. You're awesome.
❤Freedom is My Portion! Paul Robeson Rest In Power!
Go Down Moses, Let My People Go---dose it matter? Sounds like the voice of God speaking.
The Voice of God!
Steven Yourke I'm an an atheist and a communist and can tell you that Robeson was and is with us.
redword2007 I was commenting metaphorically, not literally.

What a powerful voice! It could shake the walls of Jericho.
His repertoire did include " Joshua and the Battle of Jericho ". 🤣
Шикарно!!!!!
