    The making of The Hobbit was very complicated.
    The Lord of the Rings was an arduous and exhausting job; from pre-production to the final cut of the Extended Editions took about 7 years of incessant work by Peter Jackson and his team. He wasn't eager to take on another such marathon. And there were major changes on the studio side of things, with New Line Studios being taken over by Warner Brothers, and new leadership with a quite different approach than those who had worked with Jackson on LOTR.
    Making The Hobbit was talked about for years, but for a long time wasn't going anywhere, in large part due to complicated rights and licensing issues. Eventually Guillermo del Toro was approached to direct the Hobbit films, with Jackson as producer. Del Toro was involved in pre-production and scriptwriting, and it was during his tenure that they decided that, instead of making one film based on the Hobbit book and one "bridge" film exploring Gandalf's activities and tying them into LOTR as was the original plan, they would make a 2-movie Hobbit including both (the later expansion to 3 movies happened during post-production editing). However, the studio was extremely slow to "green light" the production, and after about 2 years of living and working in New Zealand waiting for the go-ahead that never came, Del Toro reluctantly bowed out of the project and moved on, though he still has scriptwriting credit and some of his influence remains in other aspects of the film. Peter Jackson picked up the reins again and had to re-work the production from someone else's vision into his own. Other complications plagued the production, including an actor's union boycott which abruptly halted all filming for several weeks and caused great upheaval, even requiring an emergency debate in the NZ parliament to sort out. (It's a long and complicated story). And then Peter Jackson still had to meet the original release schedule, which meant a shortened post-production and less time for editing.
    Those who complain about the bloated and slightly unfocused nature of the Hobbit films are often not aware of how chaotic and difficult the production was, and how VERY close they came to not being made at all. The Lord of the Rings was made in relative obscurity, with remarkably little outside interference, whereas The Hobbit was made in the full glare of world publicity and intense studio pressure, and suffered for it. Having watched the whole thing from its inception I'm of the opinion that its existence is something of a miracle. Flawed, but still pretty great. I'm glad it exists, because it so nearly didn't.

    The trolls that turn to stone are the oldest type bread by Morgoth in the first age in mockery of the Ents. At the time he bread them and his earliest orcs there was no sun or moon. But when Morgoth and Ungoliant, the Great Moster Spider, destroyed the Two Trees that gave light to The Undying Lands and fled back to Middle Earth, the remnant power in each was sung into a golden fruit ( the sun ) and a silver leaf ( the moon ), and inhabited by Miar. Set on their courses, at the first day of the first sunrise The Fathers of Men awoke.
    But those early monsters had no resistance to the new lights. Many turned to stone or had to hide away from it. Elves and other inhabitants of Middle Earth had all been able to see quite well by starlight.

    One thing that rarely gets mentioned is that the novel The Hobbit had a much lighter tone than The Lord of the Rings. It was more of an adventure story for young adults or even children. Whereas The Lord of the Rings had darker themes, such as the end of the world. I'm not really sure what people were expecting, but it was just about what I thought it would be.

    Pumped for this! If not for the understandable tendency to put this trilogy against LOTR (which nothing can compare to) it’s seriously a great trilogy of movies. Casting is fantastic and as someone who adores the book I think all of the changes Jackson made were very good ones.

    People do complain as these movies advance that there’s way too much non-canon made-up stuff larding up the movies, and that’s true. But one thing I realized is that the scenes featuring Bilbo are quite faithful. If there were a “Bilbo Cut” featuring only scenes with Martin Freeman (plus one particular dragon sequence), it would be a very faithful adaptation. The book’s point of view is limited omniscient 3rd person from over Bilbo’s shoulder, about 95% of the time. It’s like Peter Jackson DID make that movie - but then added in a bunch of other stuff to pad the runtime. So anytime you do not see Bilbo on the screen you’re probably seeing some events and characters not in the book, for better or for worse.

    Gandalf DOES have a Ring of Power. Cirdan the elf gave Gandalf one of the 3 Elven rings of power, Narya, the Ring of Fire. It inspires hope, and partly why he brings hope everywhere he goes.

    In my humble opinion, this is the best of the hobbit films. It is true that these movies had a number of issues during production, which explains some of their problems, but doesn’t erase them.
    Outside of the movies being almost OFFENSIVELY cgi heavy, my very brief analysis of these movies is that they 1.) do stay very true to the themes of the book. 2.) they MOSTLY stay true to the overall tone of the book. And 3.) struggles to stay true to the world of middle earth. Were it not for the presence of Gandalf, and the score connecting it to the lotr movies, it would almost seem like a different universe.
    To me, these movies decrease in quality with each release, but I’m still very interested to hear your thoughts…. And just to watch some pretty fun movies if you don’t take anything else from them.

  • @valbonney2575
    @valbonney2575 7 месяцев назад

    Good to see you back in Middle Earth! I enjoy these movies, although I was disappointed that The Hobbit was spread over three films. It was necessary with LOTR (which was written in three distinct parts anyway), but The Hobbit is a much smaller book and simpler tale ... but there we are, this is what we got, and better this than nothing, imo! 😉
    In case you missed it, Balin (the lovely older dwarf, with masses of white hair and beard) is the one whose tomb Gimli is grieving over in Moria. Also, Gimli's father Gloin is among the party of dwarves (big ginger hair and beard), and at one point he mentions "my boy Gimli" 😍

    More than LOTR I always recommend to read the hobbit before watching this series, it is a small read no pun intended but reading all 3 Lotr is tough this is easy and especially with this series it helps make them better to understand this is not the story just a take on the story, always helped make the movies more fun and less dumb
    The stuff they did well they did great at, the barrels, goblin king, lake town leadership/ characters and love stories can be overlooked
