    Mark, the enclosed chamber at 21:24 is a Mapvision Quality Gate 6200 Series in-line inspection system. It is a photogrammetric multi-camera inspection system for 100% in-line measurement. It measures the 3D positions of visible features (holes etc.) and checks presence of components. This is a new technology that is more and more used in in-line inspection of welded assemblies like subframes, axles, crosss car beams and other body components

    I now see more and more of these cars on the road. I admire BMW for being brave and radical with the technology and styling in this car. At first I found the styling too radical, now I love it. Looking forward to buying a six year old one in the future - New is out of my price range. As an engineer, The joy of owning such a car will be huge, just think, no rust, no oil leaks, no turbo, no injectors, no cam belts. This is how the cars of the future will be made - they just won't all be as radical and visionary as the i3.

    Carbon fiber is not cheap and as you see this is the factory and car of the future! It is changing my mind about electric cars!

      So much efforts to make just one model. I even don't realize how human being could implement all that stuff to work that smooth and correctly. And all those robots were made specially for certain production. Wow respect to all those minds))

    One word: Amazing !!!. This is technology at it's best. Safety first as very few operators are required on key assy. process. ABB/Festo/Siemens. BMW´s finest. The only problem here is the cost. This is not a car for the masses. Cheers.

      +Fabricio Luna amazing? lmao, the i3 looks like crap. every popular small car like the VW Polo, Ford Fiesta, Renault Clio etc. looks 10x better. wait for the 35k $ tesla coming next year and you will realize even more how shitty the BMW is.

      the i3 is a science project, more than 2 billions in R&D... from an engineering point of view everything in it is jaw dropping, the i3 is a lot of things but shitty is not one of them. That being said, it does look like crap ...

    The people saying that bmw must be taking a huge loss on each i3 surely don't realize that the cost of production has been cut by 75% if you listen to sources that have torn down the car (check out the autoline podcasts i3 Episode.) Also essentially no loss

    I was wondering the same thing... I can only guess it is some type of automated optical inspection, which would explain the different illumination cycles that happen.

    This is a demonstration of the ability to produce cars with high sophisticated equipment.
    I am not sure whether video it is only a video for demontration but in gerneral very insteresting procedure of high voltage battery making,

    I love watching this video. I own a 2018 Nissan Leaf. Could you imagine the range you could get out of it if it were made of carbon Fibre, or aluminium like Tesla. Yippee

    Cheap carbonfiber (relatively) gives i3 great advandatge compared to i-MiEV, Leaf or Tesla Model S. Weight has been one of the biggest problem with electric cars and using carbonfiber helps to decrease weight dramatically.

    I'm upset the m52b28 engine got plastic cooling parts and stretch head bolts. other than that im gonna work for bmw one day.

    After seeing how much work goes into just the battery pack, it seems to me the price might be a little more justified. I still wont buy this car new though. 50k for a hatchback is too much.

      Stealthmuiz in Canada the Chevy Bolt is $50k too so IMO an i3 with range extender is a better go.

    Very imformatively. The battery pack is placed in the best area with Crash Safety. But I think a damaged fuel tank is really low critical against Li Ion cells...where is the explosion protection housing?

      I fear you may be mistaken, liquid fuels particularly petrol are far more volatile as susceptible to explosion -- that's why they are used in ICEs. If you can isolate a battery from shorts and prevent deformation, it will be far safer than a similarly protected petrol tank.
      Remember: a petrol tank must by definition send an explosive fluid around the car. That will always be a far greater risk to safety than a well made battery system.

      A J Wright The petrol danger is given if there is more gaseously part. For Li-cells it depends on the chemical build up and used material like CoO2. I think fire caused by Li cells is a really critical part e.g. fire of Tesla cars. But if the there is a fire, an explosion might be follow. And the battery fire cannot be deleted by water or foam. A controlled burn-up is needed.

      They better protect the Lithium battery really well. Because if the element comes in contact with water or oxygen, then a fire will occur. There is a reason why Alkali metals are stored in hydrocarbon oils.

      It's a camera system that checks all vital parts, welds, studs, rivets etc are in correct position.

    Hoch lebe die i3-produktion - mögen viele i3 entstehen.
    Ich konnte schon dreimal mitfahren - leider noch nicht selbst fahren: ein besonders eindrucksvolles Automobil!
    PS: Dieses Video ist etwas langatmig - es könnte durchaus etwas gestrafft werden!?

    I thought BMW i3 is ridiculously expensive before watching it.
    Now I think i3 is ridiculously cheap for these lots of manufacturing steps and technologies.

    Do we really need this much precision and accuracy to go into a car which takes us from point A to point B? No - and for the masses, the 99%, - the cost of such quality is prohibitive. The question then becomes what vehicles are considered optimal; the correct balance of quality and cost producing a real value in an affordable car, one that the 99% can afford?

    Ford made a 100% recyclable Ford Escape but they never sold it. They claimed you could literally bury the vehicle and everything would go back to mother earth without any problems. Have no idea why they don't sell the car because the lighter weight would mean better MPG ratings and lately they've had a lot of controversy on there so called MPG ratings. I know my 2012 Focus SfE was a waste of the extra 500 because I get nowhere near 40mpg Hwy!

    So Elon Musk laughed when asked about the I3 on bloomberg you tube clip - I guess he took one look at the clunky looking battery pack and its low range compared to the Tesla. Still I like the funky looks and high driving position is great for an urban commuter.

    Hopefully if the rumours are true and apple will share this platform they will fill extra batteries where the Rex goes. The space is just wasted when you get the standard ev. I know it not very BMW but it makes me think with a motor the size of a melon, they could have done front wheel drive and have a battery pack the fills under the rear seats like Renault/Nissan do. Maybe Apple will do this as they won't be selling a car for a 'driver' like BMW.

      Bayerische Motor Werke have been famous for their robotics plants for ages now. I remember a friend of my father coming back from picking up is car from the factory, including the little tour like this video, showing no human interaction except for some QC steps. Impressive, and that was mid eighties...

    was probably because the car was bio degradable they discarted the idea as it would degrade with the elements until it was so far gone it would be dangerous to drive it causing fatal accidents

    Take a look how a few workers here it's all robotics and yet BMW sells it's cars in a very high price ,,good cars yes but too expensive ,,yet they shouldn't cause there are no salaries for the robots ..So rediculous though !!

      Kilian Schnitzel Yes only for once at the beggining for every model but they keep on selling the cars so expensive ..very good cars are german cars no doupt about it and i like them too but too expensive !!

      Lexus used a similar woven carbon fiber process for their LFA, and that car was $375,000 each.

      I know its a lil bit late after four month, but heres the answere ;)
      Its cleaning the surface with plasma to get rid of the "dirt", u cant see with the naked eye

    That was really boring. If they didn't show the whole process of making carbon fiber, the whole production video would be 5 minutes. Tesla factory presentation - much more interesting.

    No wonder BMW cost so much, look how slow the process is. Tesla is pumping out cars so fast you have to slow down the video to see things, BMW speeds it up so you don't fall asleep while watching. Hard to believe they're so in efficient.

      Wrong.................Tesla loses money on every car they build and sell.The only real money they make is selling the CAFE credits to the other car-companies.Only problem with that scheme? After 250,000 units Federal-State Rebates expire and they will be forbidden to sell CAFE Credits as Congress (both House/Senate voted against Tesla).Plus Tesla is facing many lawsuits throughout the Country by violating State/Federal Laws which prohibit car-manufactures selling direct to consumers.The plant,as far as productivity is concerned can't even assemble 300 cars daily regularly as build quality is on below that of Chinese cars; this in a plant that at one time assembled 500,000-750,000+ uinits of left-hand.right-hand drive variants of Corollas/Pickups to the entire world.Tesla is one big PONZI Scheme...just like Fisker.........we all know where that went?

      BTW...the actual number of fully finished Tesla s is barely 100 cars daily. The Japanese are way more efficient >>FASTER at producing carbon-fibre and the end product............a process they got in when the Boeing 757-767 was in development-production in the late 1970's(not including 777 work which started in the late 1980s early 90s) ............part of being a Boeing Subcontractor

    no way this car is gonna be cheap to produce...with all those complicated process compare to Tesla assembly...i bet bmw m3 is way cheaper...pity BMW for their future failure in electric cars...

      autoline did a podcast on that, the tooling is 75% cheaper than an equivalent metal car because of the carbon fiber construction.
