  • Dursley is a wonderful market town near Stroud, on the western escarpment on the Cotswolds. Despite its busy appearance, the church is full of gems and there are a number of wonderful other old buildings in the town.

Absolutely THRILLED by today's epidode and thank you, Robin, for the special mention and kind assessment of my home town. It was refreshing to learn some things I did not know about Dursley too! I no longer live there, but my family does, and it really is a beautiful part of the country. It has certainly come on leaps and bounds in the last couple of decades. Love your channel and could listen to you talk all day! Thanks again.

Hi Mark. I can only thank you for your recommendation. I think it was good for us to expand our view a bit. Whilst we know people who live very nearby and have visited several villages in the neighbourhood we may well have missed Dursley if it were not for you. Take care and thanks for watching. Robin

Personally I was a little disappointed that there was no mention of Fosters closing down. A turning point in the history of my home town.

Hi Helen. It's a pity isn't it? I am sure those architects of the 1960s really thought they were producing masterpieces. Perhaps, occasionally, they were. Thanks for watching. Robin

Dursley, and just around the hill from it, around from the north, is Stinchcombe. Of course, the hill is Stinchcombe hill. J K Rowling used the two towns in Harry Potter, where Dursley was his uncle's surname, and Stinchcombe was where Linfred of Stinchcombe supposed to live, who was the start of the Potter family. I thought I'd throw that little tidbit of modern history in there.

You won't be surprised that I very quickly discovered the Potter connection. I am delighted to hear it. Rowling's Harry Potter stories gave my children more pleasure than any other author; and I doubt it will surprise you to know I read to them a great deal. Thanks for watching. Robin

You're absolutely right the views are stunning. On the other hand, the church with a dead body and a missing head is weird; at least he's quiet.

Disdain for history is blasphemy. I true tragedy. The Cotswold are such a beautiful place steeped in history and to “bulldoze” those gorgeous cottages is a very real to even an American like me who’s own history lays in the UK places such as the one you speak of. I am truly saddened when the history I have yet had the pleasure to visit “but will soon” is taken away.

Although I don't (yet!) live in the Dursley area, I have twice been to St James' for recitals by the now famous Gesualdo Six choral group, the town being the home location of one of the singers. The town is also one area I have been looking at moving to, it being much closer to my younger daughter. 😀

Margaret there are very few areas of the world I can recommend more wholeheartedly than the Western escarpment of the Cotswolds. I hope your plans materialise. There is a lot of local music making and quite a few local annual opera events. Who could ask for more? Thanks for watching. Robin

That tomb in the church with the skeletal stone carved remains…were…I think…an expression of mortality and the final fate of our bodies after death…some Bishops even..have the same on their grave…to show…that also…the high and mighty…must recognize with the same end and cannot escape the bodily corruption…of the last resting place.

It still looks good and has some nice views but 30 yrs ago it had bymacks, listers, mawdsleys and listers etc and had a heart. The factories closed or moved on and were replaced by housing estates. Its a commuter town with no real employment. Many grand buildings were pulled down for new roads. The castle (more likely a fortified manor) was prob situated close to the swimming pool as geophysics found foundations some years back.

Stroud Unfortunately received the same sledge hammer redevelopment with 1960s 70s brutalist architecture replacing the 18th century mill buildings. I hope some day the favor can be returned to them and the brick and metal monstrosities are razed to the ground
