The 1970 Interzonal was held in Palma de Mallorca from November 9-December 12, and was the last Interzonal held as a one-section round robin. With the tournament swelling to 24 players and further expansion on the way, future changes were inevitable. The following players vied for six slots in the candidates matches to be held in 1971: William G Addison, Miroslav Filip, Robert James Fischer, Efim Geller, Svetozar Gligoric, Vlastimil Hort, Robert Huebner, Borislav Ivkov, Eleazar Jimenez Zerquera, Bent Larsen, Milan Matulovic, Henrique Mecking, Dragoljub Minic, Renato Naranja, Oscar Panno, Lev Polugaevsky, Lajos Portisch, Samuel Reshevsky, Jorge Alberto Rubinetti, Vasily Smyslov, Duncan Suttles, Mark Taimanov, Wolfgang Uhlmann, Tudev Ujtumen..
Ujtumen from Mongolia, about as outside as an outsider could get, actually held the lead by himself after round 3. However, reality and Robert J. Fischer set in, as the American quickly soared to a dominating position. The other contenders didn't worry about it too much; after all, you only had to finish in the top six to qualify for the Candidates, and there was even a seventh spot open for a reserve. So they played it safe, while Fischer kept working hard.
At the quarter pole following round 6, Fischer had 5.5 points and a 1.5 point lead on Geller, Gligoric, Larson, Panno, and Ujtumen. But then came a bad stretch: he managed to draw lost positions in round 7 and 8, but Larsen didn't let him off the hook in round 9. By now the lead had vanished, as Geller joined Fischer at the top with 6.5.
That led to the critical round 12 encounter between the leaders, Geller holding a half-point lead and playing the White pieces. Any normal grandmaster, when Geller offered an early draw, would have accepted to get an easy half-point closer to qualification. Fischer, hungry for a win after five rounds without one, refused.
Geller played inaccurately and lost a pawn, reaching a difficult rook ending. Eventually, a hallucination and a final mistake sealed his fate, and Fischer took the lead. The rest was a matter of technique: Fischer won two more in a row, took a couple of draws for a breather, then started his famous streak with full points in his last seven games.

If he had , Antonio would've said "Bobby played Queen to d8 and this comes with check. It was in this position on move 44 that Ivkov resigned the game. Why did he resign? Well, this move by Bobby produces a forced check mate in four. King has to move to g7 (only square available), then white plays Knight to f5 with check. The black king has to capture white's light square bishop on g6 (only move available) which is followed with Queen to f6 with check. The black King can move to h5, and white delivers a very nice checkmate by moving the g file pawn to g4. Or the King could move to h7 but this is met with Queen to g7 checkmate."

It’s his simplistic yet complex way of getting the absolute most scope out of every piece. When Antonio mentions the worse bishop pair in history in the game Kasparov versus Ivanchuk I know what he is referring to. That’s the video, “The only man Kasparov ever feared” 😄. This game with Bobby Fischer was brilliant. From the knight sacrifice at the end and Fischer choosing to finish the game in forced mate in 3 moves instead of 4, just for efficiency I am guessing lol. Fischer is my #2 favorite chess player after Tal.

The day my father and I fought in his kitchen was a notable day. And any outcome was going to be empowering for both of us. If you really think about it. I haven't spent a whole lot of time with him lately. But when we do, not nearly enough gets said. He taught me some life lessons when I was young that turned out being 100% accurate at 40.

The American Chess Congress was the official sponsor of the BOBBY FISCHER INT’L CHESS PARK proposed to be built in Santa Monica to honor the only American to have won the World Chess Championship. Bobby had an impressive career and for many is considered the greatest in chess. He began to study chess at the age of six and became a voracious student of the game. Fischer won the United States Chess Championship at the age of fourteen and at fifteen became the youngest Grandmaster at that time. In two consecutive years, he won the United States Chess Championship with a perfect score and has held the title eight times. In 1972, he captured the World Chess Championship with a decisive lead. In 1975, the Soviets and the International Chess Federation [FIDE] claimed the title on forfeiture in what is still a controversial issue and thus began the FIDE World Chess Championship. In 1992, Fischer emerged to play a rematch for the real title and won in good fashion. He died in 2008.
The chess tables at the foot of the pier in Santa Monica, California are known of internationally. It was the former site of the old Santa Monica Bay Chess Club. Bobby first played in Santa Monica during the Piatigorsky Cup [a strong international tournament] in 1966. When Fischer lived in Pasadena in the late eighties, he would delight many with his visits to the tables. For these reasons, the tables have been selected to honor a great American chess hero.

As a 1500 rated player, I really appreciate all the principles and insights that you share throughout your videos. It's really like an intermediate chess course and I feel my eyes open and understanding of the game broaden through listening to these commentaries. Have you thought of creating an online course? I would be interested, as would a million other chess pro wannabes watching your channel. Million dollar idea. You're welcome.

I heard Magnus's course was not very popular bc he's not good at all at explaining anything. He can't teach, at all. It's obvious if you watch 5 minutes of any of his videos. And he's at a level somewhere up in the stratosphere where most people can not fathom.
