When I first heard this song, I didn’t realize the meaningful focus on AAPI belonging, strength and resiliency. I heard it, as humans tend to, through my own lens as a woman with invisible disabilities; a woman who rarely sees herself represented in justice movements. Then I watched this beautiful video, representing diversity within community. It brought me chills, smiles, and tears of recognition for your struggles. You DO belong! Thank you for reminding me of the struggles within AAPI communities, for helping me remember that I’m not alone, and for reminding me that all of us, marginalized and privileged, belong together. We are here to remind each other of that. MILCK, your music touches me beyond the lyrics, beyond the melodies. It’s watching you sing that makes my heart sing. You’ve been gifted with an incredible ability to express yourself through music, but also through your very being. It radiates from you, and I’m forever grateful for the opportunity to watch you exude love, pain, anger, hope, and truth.
Thank you for sharing your own interpretation of this. My hope is that people will find themselves in this, regardless of heritage. I know all of us struggle with belonging, while also deeply desiring to belong. I send love to you as a woman with invisible disabilities. I look forward to learning about your journey, and to sharing more music. Thank you for also empathizing with the AAPI community's journey towards radical belonging right now.
