      My Lamy 2000 is also made of makrolon. It is nice to hold and no scuffs or scratches. I have the stainless steel Lamy Studio, but it is not as nice to hold or write with.

    I love my Lamy 2000 (F) as a daily writer, but I've never tried one of the steel ones. Fun to see it as I've been thinking about an exotic nib size in a steel finish.

    • @writerlywitterings
      @writerlywitterings  4 года назад

      I really do love this pen. It has a glorious weight and sits well in the hand - but - well, I have to admit, I'm not using it much for the reason I mentioned. I find that it is so slippery that is slides about while I'm writing. perhaps because I don't grip the pen tightly enough while writing - but then, were I to do so, I wouldn't be able to write for very long. The benefit of pens such as my Viscontis is that I can write for hours with them. They don't move in the hand at all - gripping a piece of lava is apparently good for the writing!
      I would strongly recommend trying one of the steel ones before buying.

    Nice review as always, Mike! That nib is a actually a fine. I should have included that somewhere, sorry about that. Like all German manufacturers the nibs run broader than one would expect, in a Japanese pen this could almost be designated a medium-broad nib. I’m glad you enjoy using it! Looking forward to the coffee machine review, I’m happy they came through and got the machine to you! Cheers, Chris

    Wow! You got the stainless steel model! I want that one but it’s too expensive for me at the moment. I have the macrolon Lamy 2000 and I didn’t want it because it looked so “mannish’ but I really enjoy the nib on it. I got a broad by mistake and bought a new nib in medium and swapped it out. I love it but I am really wanting an extra fine so my stainless steel will be an extra fine. It’s nice to finally see one of these. Is the grip section too slippery? It looks really slippery! After a while you won’t notice the ears sticking out. People call them ears. From your writing sample it looks like an extra fine as the Lamy nibs tend to run really wide. I’m glad to see you use this because it does look way to slippery for my taste. I may get the original Lamy 2000 or the Dialog which is retractable. I’m glad to be able to cross this one off my list and opt for a less slippery grip section! Wonderful review! Always so lovely to see you!

      I've had one Lamy with a nib that I considered acceptable, and that one was hand selected by someone at Lamy who was trying to convince me that Lamy made good pens. He didn't convince me. I don't think Lamy even makes poor pens. There just aren't any name brand pens out there as bad, or as poorly designed, or as drastically overpriced, as Lamy pens.

    For years I have carried in my four-pen pouch the Lamy 2000 and the matching mechanical pencil. The hooded nib stops the pen from drying out when listening to people and taking notes. There is a sweet spot when writing, so I pay attention to how I hold the pen. The pen has been a workhorse and never fails. Thank you for your review Michael. Isn't the 'scratch' at the end of the barrel the blind cap? I hope you and your family are safe and well.

  • @riseandinspire
    @riseandinspire 4 года назад +3

    Enjoyed, as usual, your review. But the rings you see on the pen are not from the effect of the cap on it. The ring close to the end of the barrel is the seperation of the twisting knob to activate the piston filler. Closer to the end of the nib, it's where the section unscrews from the barrel. I have 2 2ks (the standard and the Bauhaus) and even with time, the cap clipping or friction fit don't leave any mark on either end, surprisingly.

    • @writerlywitterings
      @writerlywitterings  4 года назад

      Hi, Louis,
      Afraid no, they are caused by the cap. The ones at the front are about a centimetre away from the join where the sections connect. You can see in the video that they are behind the three stubs where the cap fits. The one at the rear is about 3 mm away from the cap's end. The first one is where the cap's edge hits the body of the pen, the rear one is where the posted cap's internal springs grip the rear of the body.

    What is your experience with Diamine ink? I have been trying Diamine Jet Black with my Lamy 2000 and having ink flow issue. It keeps giving me hard start and skipping, and when it write, it put out too much ink that causes bleeding through.

    • @writerlywitterings
      @writerlywitterings  3 года назад +1

      I can honestly say that all Diamine inks have been reliable in all of my pens. Not all inks do (I have had occasional hard starts with Akkerman inks in some pens). Some inks seem drier than others - which means I think it's more likely that your nib is running a little dry. It might be a good idea to get the nib checked, or simply buy a new one - they're very cheap for a Lamy.

  • @geslinam9703
    @geslinam9703 Год назад +1

    Basing my choice on Lamy steel nibs, which I think are very fine compared to most European nibs, I decided to get the 2000 in a medium. I was shocked to find that the M nib is broader than the three broad nib pens I have, including a Lamy Al-Star broad!!! I like broad nibs, but did not want another at this time. So, naturally, I did what any reasonable person would do, I bought another one, this time with a fine nib. It’s not bad…but I don’t love it. I like the looks of the 2000, but I don’t think it is as great a pen as some say. It isn’t as comfy to hold as some of my other pens, especially for long periods. And to be honest, I prefer the Lamy steel nibs. The 2000 nib is nice, but, and this is just my subjective feeling about it, it’s a little too smooth and glassy for me. I like a nib to be smooth but also slightly tactile, I want to feel it on the paper, if that makes sense. (I think the best nib ever is the Platinum 3776 medium)
    I think it will take some time to find the right combinations for this pen…meaning best ink, best paper. It’s not going to be a pen for me that I will enjoy with everything….but I’ll figure out what it’s little niche needs to be.

    • @writerlywitterings
      @writerlywitterings  Год назад

      There is the other way to deal with it, which is to get it to a decent nib grinder. It won't be so cost-effective, but it'll likely mean you have a pen you'll want to use more and more. I had that with a Conway Stewart nib that was ground to italic, and I'm afraid I couldn't get on with it. I had a new medium nib and had it ground to a stub, and that's now one of my favourite nibs of all!

    The little nubs to hold the cap on is the one thing that most people complain about with the Lamy 2000. but I find that it depends entirely on how you hold the pen. I'm lucky enough that my grip means my fingers never come close to touching them, whereas other people put their fingers right on top of them. Otherwise it's a great pen, and the first time I actually said wow when writing with a pen because it was so smooth. But I have the macrolon version, I've never tried the stainless steel version.
    Also, Neil Gaiman is a fan of the Lamy 2000 apparently, and likes to draft out his books using it. He called it his "novel writing pen" once. At least that's been a story among fountain pen circles forever.

    • @writerlywitterings
      @writerlywitterings  4 года назад +1

      I know Neil writes with fountain pens - but I think he tends to use a variety of them. Still, it's a good sign when an author uses a pen, I think. It means he/she is thinking when writing!

      Most people complain about the nib. I've heard that about Neil Gaiman, mostly from Lamy fans, but every time I've seen him using a fountain Pen, it was far more expensive than the 2000.

  • @jamesaritchie1

    It always gets me in trouble, but I despise everything about the Lamy 2000. I hate the way it looks, I find it so unpleasant and difficult to hold properly that this alone would make me dislike it. I also hate what it's made of.
    But the worst part of the 2000 is the nib. First, it's very hard. If i wanted a hard nib I'd save a lot of money and just buy a twenty dollar pen with a steel nib. I buy gold nibs because I want to get away from nails, not because I want another one that cost five times as much.
    In fact, I have a bunch of steel nibs that all write better than the 2000. Even my lower end steel nibs give me far more pleasure than the 2000. I'd much rather write with a Pilot Metropolitan, or a TWSBI ECO, or even a Jinhao 100 Then you have the infamous tiny, tiny sweet spot. Yes, it isn't terribly difficult to learn how to adjust to this sweet spot, but I do not want a pen that makes me change the way I hold every other pen I own just to get it to write without skipping, or stopping altogether. I want a pen that takes orders, not a pen that gives them.
    I know it's mostly personal preference, and I know the 2000 is supposed to be an icon, but of all the pens I've ever owned, the 2000 is the only one I regret buying, holding, and using. I actually had two of them, through no fault of my own, and I didn't even resell them. I gave them to friends who wanted to try one because of all the hype. They hated them as much as I did, and passed them along to other friends of theirs.

    • @writerlywitterings
      @writerlywitterings  4 года назад

      Really interesting - but it goes to show that so much is a matter of personal taste. For example, the one pen which I could not use, was a Pelikan M800 demonstrator. I thought it was absolutely beautiful - but the nib was like a nail, as you say. It was shortly after that I spoke to Visconti and was sent a Skylight.
