  • Are you torn between keeping a commonplace book and a daily journal? In this video, we'll explore the differences between these two note-taking systems and help you decide which one is best for you. A commonplace book is a unique tool for collecting and organizing knowledge, allowing you to create a personalized library of handwritten notes and reflections. On the other hand, a journal is a more personal and introspective space for recording your thoughts, feelings, and experiences. Whether you're a student looking to improve your learning, a professional seeking to develop a second brain system, or simply someone who loves taking notes and annotating their favorite books, this video will provide you with valuable insights to help you make an informed decision. So, sit back, grab your favorite notebook - whether it's a Field Notes or a Leuchtturm - and let's dive into the world of commonplace books and journals!

I started watching you about a year ago and loved the idea of creating a commonplace book. I have created 3 so far....a self-help one, a marriage one, and a seeking spiritualism one. I LOVE them so far! It's great for me because I have a big collection of non-fiction books I am reading through. The commonplace books help me to take notes on the things I feel I need to remember. It's also a great way to use up the blank journals I have been collecting over the years.

Thank you for the definitions! As a non-native English speaker, the term “commonplace notebook” confused me and even ChatGPT was not as good at explaining it as you are! This makes so much sense. 100% agree that keeping journaling separate from the commonplace book is better for organization. Of course they can be mixed together, but when it comes to finding the info later, it’s better to have a separate notebook for it.

I agree. It is so much easier to keep them separate for organization.
I’m glad that I was able to explain the term “commonplace notebook” better for you.

I'm a firm believer in the fewer books/journals/etc, the better. I like it all consolidated into one. I've got a "Classic" sized planner (A5) from Saddleback Leather that I just got my 2025 filler for, and it's going to have it all! Your timing on posting this video is great, 'cause I'll be piecing it all together today and your insight will help. (I'm both a huge fan of Franklin-Covey and SBL, btw.)

I am interested in seeing the common place, journal combo! I already am a fan of the way you set up ur commonplace notebook.

I totally understand what you mean about consolidating as much as you can when it comes to your notebooks. But let’s say for example, if I were to get a planner that had more notes’ pages in the back. Then, I could journal there or do some commonplacing on those pages. Would those pages last me at least for an entire year, like the rest of the planner would? My guess is that it wouldn’t. Or if it could, I would have to have a significant amount of notes’ pages in the back of my planner to be able to accommodate that section. This would also mean that my planner would be a lot wider…chunky, before I would add anything to it. I know that I don’t want to carry a thick notebook in my bag with me everyday.
Also, I don’t keep my planner past 1-2 years. However, I do keep my commonplace notebooks for several years; since I refer to them every so often.

I would love to see a video where you combine both commonplace and journal, I prefer to have the least amount of books! This is my first time watching your videos and you’re adorable! I love your journaling style! New subscriber! 😊

I believe that I discussed that in this video:
      ruclips.net/video/PItxZFK4irc/видео.html
If not, then it might be in this video:
      ruclips.net/video/glYX0LkwWFY/видео.html
I don’t plan on combining my commonplace book with my journal.
I like to write more about my daily life, events and such, that I want to store as memories in my journal.
My commonplace book is more informational and educational for me.
My journal is also a place where I explore my creative side.
They mostly serve different purposes for me, therefore, I don’t see a need to combine them.
I also don’t want to have to divide a notebook in half in order to have both of them inside of it. (I’ve tried something like that before…a commonplace section inside of my planner.)
I might run out of space for one section and not the other…Then, some pages would get wasted.

I am struggling with what to do here. I’d really prefer to have just one book. Right now I’m keeping a gratitude journal separately, but honestly I don’t want to manage multiple books. I really think it comes down to what works for each of us individually. 😊

I originally saw your videos when you first showed your commonplace book, it was in a weeks size and you organised it with stickers. I'm just curious why you moved away from that, what didn't work out so well? I was thinking of getting into the exact system you used to have.
