Living in the north (zone 5) I nearly didn't watch this. But there were numerous principles at the heart of my landscaping philosophy. 1. Low maintenance 2. Water conservation- drought tolerant plants. Although many have the pretty landscapes shown still used some grass, I prefer other very low ground covers. 3. Year round design. In the north this is more difficult but evergreens with varied foliage preserve beauty even in harsh winters. 4. Tranquility- water features add significantly to the setting 5. Use of various stone whether slate, pebble, gravel, hardscapes or such can enhance beauty, usability and reduce maintenance 6. For plant selection I would add, use many useful plants whether they be medicinal herbs, edibles for wildlife like bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, or for deer and other animals, or of humans. And include companion planting practices.
