The Sound of dial-up Internet

  • EDIT: November 2020 wow this really blew up over the years. I have made a direct download available here freesound.org/people/wtermini... enjoy
Also back in 2012 a wonderful poster was made by Oona Räisänen www.windytan.com/2012/11/the-s...
    --------------------------
I was bored so I wanted to see if I could get free dial-up internet so I found that NetZero still has free service so I put in the number and heard the glorious sound of the Dial-up. Remind me of years gone. Unfortunately, I was not able to make a connection.

@@DADDYCHAD875 It's cos it takes us back to a time when things were easier and simpler. When you're a kid all you want is to grow up and be an adult, but then when you're an adult, you realize how much you miss being a kid and how good you actually had it.

I was born in 1995, and I think we had dial up Internet until 2005.
Brings back a lot of memories of downloading music using file sharing on WinMX, anyone remember that? It used to take a couple of hours to download an album!
Many memories of my mum telling me to get off the Internet so she could use the phone!
I also remember finding out that if you picked up the phone at the right moment while the dial up connection was in progress, you could speak through the phone, and your voice would come through the computer speakers! Along with a lot of feedback.
I remember when we finally got broadband, I found it mind blowing that you could use the landline phone and be on the Internet at the same time, and the difference in speed was amazing.

I thought it wouldn't matter if she picked up the phone, doesn't it prioritise the internet connection?
I was also born in 95. Even up to around 2007/2008 I remember this. For a short time after we moved out to a rural area around that year, we did try switching to it when we were in the middle of switching to a new service provider. Didn't last long.
A friend down the road had it too. Once when I visited their house and needed to call my parents later to ask if I could stay longer, I heard this noise instead of the dial tone and thought it was super weird and interesting.

The first parts of it are using older encoding schemes that were used for lower data rates before the 56K standard that this is using came out. From memory that initial carrier was used for 9600bps .That's bits per second (kind of), I could literally read text as it came in at that speed, only just though. It was such a leap up from the 1200bps modem I had before then. Downloading a page of plain text would actually take a noticeable length of time with that.
Many older things didn't need more than 9600bps and that was the maximum speed guaranteed by the telecom provider in my country. Also for 56K you needed special digital modems that connected to the carrier over T1/E1 links on at least one end of the connection. The best you could do consumer to consumer was 33.6Kbps at least initially.

    *What The Sounds Mean:*
0:00-0:05: Dial tone and modem dialing number (basically the modem automatically dials the number of the ISP ex: AOL)
0:06-0:07: MPS and ITM configuration between calling and receiving modem (essentially both modems listing their capabilities and specifications to each other.)
0:07-0:09: (FSK) (Frequency shift keying) data communication between the modems in order to agree on a mode of communication (the calling modem lists its protocols, location, manufacturer, etc. and then the receiving modem acknowledges the connection and suggests a protocol then the calling modem responds to the acknowledgment)
0:10-0:11: (FSK) transmission between modems: Receiving modem disabling echo suppression (echo suppression is in place in order to prevent feedback when a human talks on the phone but it will mess with data being transmitted on dial-up, therefore it is disabled)
0:11-0:13: (FSK) transmission between modems: Receiving modem lists its available modulation modes (repeated 6 times) and then calling modem responds with its available modulation protocols (repeated 3 times) (all this is: is both of the modems explaining their capabilities to each other in regards of how that data is actually transmitted)
0:13 1st half:(DPSK) both modems explain their transmission rates, transmission power, and their clock source (essentially both modems figure out how fast they can transmit data)
0:13 2nd half - 0:14 1st half(the sound that sounds more like a buzzer): Both modems send and receive probing signals (basically each modem tests how the other sounds over the telephone wires as telephone wires vary on a person-to-person basis)
0:14 2nd half: (DPSK) both modems communicate how they sounded over the telephone lines and they communicate what different frequencies, symbol rates, offsets, transmission power, and whether or not they heard each other properly so that they can use full-duplex communication (both modems essentially reconvene after the probing tests and explain caveats between them and if they heard each other well enough)
0:15-0:17: receiving modem transmits random data over the lines so that the calling modem can see how the receiving modem sounds over the lines
0:17-0:21: calling modem transmits random data over the lines so that the receiving modem can see how the calling modem sounds over the lines
0:21-0:23: Both modems transmit data at the same time so that they can see how they sound when they are both talking at the same time
0:23: Connection between modems successfully established!
0:24-0:26: data being transmitted and received over the internet by the computer connected to the modem
    0:26: Receiving modem disables speaker

Even for back then that sounds kindof long to click the url bar, so let me guess: Your computer was riddled with a shitload of programs running at once, a bunch of browser search bars filled with spyware, and maybe a virus or 2? Being a tech support guy in the 90's was really easy because no one really understood proper computer maintenance.

@@Drbeckerproductions It was early days man. I may have over estimated how long it took, (I was probably 9 the last time I used it) but during peak hours, 30 seconds was rare. 1-3 minutes wasn’t unusual. And you’re also not wrong about our computer at the time. I don’t remember it being slow after finally getting on, it was just old and crappy.

Recently had high speed fibre broadband installed to my house in the middle of nowhere. Speed test shows 600mbps. The old phone socket that gave me 56k internet access in the year 2000 is still on the skirting board beside my PC. I had to find this video for nostalgia!
If you had told me back then, I'd see a internet speed like that in this house, I would have said no chance. It only took 24 years!

I remember when we got broadband back in the early 2000s (Sweden, low income apartment complex area). It was crazy because the government subsizided the whole thing. Everyone that owned a building and wanted install broadband got a blank check from the government to do so (literally free money).
Within a year we went from "slow and expensive 56K-dial up kbps" to "cheap mbps at a fixed price per month" "Surf until your eyes bleed, you can be on the net 24/7 if you want to, it will still be the same price."
It went so damn fast that looking back on it was insane.

here's the funny thing, dunno how it worked there in the US, but here, taking the phone off the hook would NOT cutoff internet access. But the person at the phone end would just listen to internet screech. And i believe phone was muted at that point since talking didn't do anything.
So instead a common argument was "UGH GET THE HELL OUT OF THE INTERNET I WANT TO USE THE PHONE". This between me and my sister.
And yes, I used it from 98-99 until November 2002. Think it was used earlier though, just not by me.

    • @1980sGamer
      @1980sGamer 10 лет назад

Tiago Costa I actually live in Canada, and taking the phone off the hook won't stop internet access. Although, yes, you will still hear the screeching sound coming through the phone. Talking wouldn't do anything since the line is being used. Just for fun I signed up for NetZero's 10 hour a month free dial-up internet access. And yes, using dial-up internet nowadays is definitely an interesting experience.

    • @lblankblank2865
      @lblankblank2865 10 лет назад

Tiago Costa It's not that it cut off the connection here per se, but it was very likely to cause the connection to crash, especially if you had a cheap modem with not very good error correction software. So in practical terms, someone picking up the phone very often meant losing one's connection.
