I was 18 years old in 1974, just graduated high school. It was the summer and a cold and rainy night as I walked along a road. There was a pick up truck abandoned in a field. It was unlocked, so I took shelter. As I sat and smoked a cigarette I decided to try the radio and voila it worked. This song came on the radio and I just sat there, rain drops on metal and glass, listened and pondered to myself the same question. I knew absolutely little about everything. Since that vivid memory night, I had worked 3 jobs over 3 years, then went to college, landed a 32 year career with a major food company, married with 3 grown kids, and I am now sitting here now at 65 years old, retired, writing this short story and wondering if I was aware of any of this at any time as it was happening. It is amazing how I can listen to this song and with tears in my eyes be emotionally time ported right back to that pick up truck.
Such a beautiful song. I’m 33 and my mother most recently passed away at 67. This was her favorite song 🎶 hearing it made me feel emotional but at peace because I know she’s in a better place. In the Kingdom of eternal life to be Exact!!
The majority of us growing up in the 70’s , hearing this song , perhaps did not know where we were going to . Now that we are retired I hope we are all satisfied with where we went. And that our journey gives inner peace both for the victories we secured and the losses which we accepted.
Another timeless classic🎉 I found God and love Him with all my heart, mind and strength, just like His Son told us to🙏❤️🔥🙏 Praise YAHUAH, Our Creator and Father in Heaven
Songs like this, should be listened by young people. Because the lyrics make people to reflect abput their lives and what are they hoping for, what are they going to do to achieve those dreams they dream. Parents and teachers must promote songs like this.
I was 21 at that time and I'm and if it's God's will I will be 71 this year and this classic was great then and greater now Diana Ross, thanks for such great memories thanks for your gift. God bless you.
This song was nominated for Academy Award for Best Original Song for 1976. Lost out to Keith Carradine's "I'm Easy" from motion picture Nashville. Nice song, but no where near the beauty or meaning of Diana Ross's classic. Every college grad should memorize this song!!
No one can come close to how Diana Ross sings this song. It takes me back a long way to a time that I could do anything with my life. This song says it all while melting my heart. What an awe-inspiring lady.
John Colden Aw! I grew up hearing her voice over my Mothers cheap ass radio on the kitchen table, and one year I asked ‘Santa’ for her album which I received and played countless times! Can’t say for sure what made me think of THIS song out of the blue, and search it, but it may be the tough times my son and I have been experiencing....anyway, it brought me back for sure, and I’m needing another tissue ❤️ Diana.....immortal beauty inside and out

I love this song。I listened to this song when I was in high school and this was exactly how I felt、 I didn't know where I was going to。 by the way I live in Japan now I was in Taiwan till high school
This song moves me back when we are still living in the mountains, looking at the sunset while it's playing in the background using the battery operated radio. Life was so simple back then but now It seems that I don't know where I am going. :-(
You don't have to figure it all out at once, take your time growing up, adulting is hard stuff, it's what makes you crazy that also makes you think what am I here for and what am I doing with my life, life's a Dance, you learn as you go...slow dance for a while till you can catch up...
This song is so heart rending and sung by one of the most gifted divas of all time, Diana Ross. It invokes some sense and nostalgia of heavenly belonging when its lyrics are scanty of any hope and purpose. That I believe is the essence of Diana Ross as a vocalist. She has this serenity about her that lulls one into some bliss of sustainable oblivion.
When I was a little boy my Aunt Phyllis took me to my first day in school and this song was playing at the time. I never forgot that. Sadly I will be attending her funeral in 2 days. She is certainly going to heaven. A lovely and kind lady. God bless.
Didn't have a clue where I was going to when I first heard this song way back in the 70s when I used to listen to this with my mum. So surprised to find how my life turned out! So glad I have lived through a time when so many fantastic groups and singers were around to help me on the journey every step of the way. Thanks x.
This song took me back in the time when I was 17 or 18 years old. Those songs made me think about my life. I am a fan of Diana Ross, her voice and style.
Beautiful melody, inspirational lyrics, delivered with full emotions by legendary great singer Diana Ross. Just perfect! Wishing everyone knows the direction they're heading for in their lives🤗 Keeping searching to those who still don't❤️, you'll find the answer one day🌹
I was today years old when I finally understood and FELT the lyrics of this song -- was 6 when it first came out and have heard it a few times throughout the years, but I got a lump in my throat listening to it today! 🥹💜 (Binge watching Scandal brought me here because I missed so many episodes when it first came out on TV -- what a fricking awesome soundtrack by the way...🎵)
It so powerfully escapes my comprehension how any human being could hear these haunting lyrics & soul piercing melodies & somehow remain unmoved. That which separates we humans from the beasts of the filed is captured in its entirety in this melody. Life's sweetness & cruelties are in equal measure showcased in this chilling, rich deception of the raw emotion we call love. Kudos!
It was in 1995, I used to work as a part time waiter in Kuşadası, Turkey. Every night a Greek radio used to play this song. Whenever I hear it, I feel everything same. The smell of the flowers, the sound of the rain, the taste of beer ... even the same British tourist are walking in the streets. My God, I wish I could return to those years even for a few minutes.
One of the most beautiful and meaningful songs I have ever Heard. When one has a good job or is succesful in business or has a good love affair the temptation to change comes to us. But we must be very careful as we might lose what we have and live to regret it. Many times grass looks greener on the other side of the hill but when we get there we often find it is just crab grass. So if we intend to change we better think it over well before doing so so as not to regret losing what we have now.
This song is hauntingly beautiful. Brings a lot of nostalgia for me... those late night walks in the sleeping streets. early morning chow in the eateries with a dog staring at you while you listen on a radio playing classic songs and having a coffee. Staring blankly at the window of a bus during the night while old songs are playing.. Lastly, when i help my mother when i was a kid bring foodstuffs to her work that she will sell for a measly price just to have that extra earnings. geez... too emotional for me.
Beautiful melody indeed! I love Diana Ross' voice which captivates its listeners with her mellow voice that evokes that certain feeling of falling in love again and again....

Hi Bridget, How are you doing?
I was about 12 or so when this came out, and thought how magical it was. It still has those same qualities now 47 years later.
I'm here because of our Module Activity in UNDERSTANDING CULTURE SOCIETY AND POLITICS 💕. It's nice to hear this song after many years, this song made me remember my childhood days. Now I am not really sure where I am going to but I know God is there to guide and lead me to the right path towards success.
Great Song and Lyrics... The Song's meaning has, depth to it...👍
