The intro solo is so on point. Very John Mayerish!
Nam Giang that is the intro from this david ryan harris video. you should check it out!

He even has the steel bracelet watch. Must help with the Mayer tone haha

@@trevormekelburg3773 the Watch actually helps vibrato. found out few years ago dunno how It works but it works
i think everything about to Mayer is worth the hype
Double collar? 😋😂😂 Mayer is boss but his style is intentionally quirky.
wildebest hahahahaha. Bang average. You must be joking
@wildebest You heard that Clapton called him a true master right?
People that say he’s average prove they’ve never taken to time to hear him really play live. He’s inspired a whole hell of a lot more people than most, if not all, of today’s guitar players.
@wildebest man cmon he is like postmodern version of all of those true masters in the past
Rumor has it, PRS made John a guitar, supposedly looks like a strat... crazy
Aaron Parker And so has just about every other guitar maker.
These are no rumors. John Mayer is playing PRS guitars for quite a while now and the PRS John Mayer signature strat (named Silver Sky) is available already since 2018.
Lmao. I’ve played it.... allegedly. And I liked it. Also crazy. Seeing as how it’s probably a myth.
Some rumor. It feels like deja vu, almost like I've seen them behind glass every time I've walked into a shop for years now.
Seems a few people have taken your comments literally here Aaron and not ironically, LOL. Personally I love John Mayer, really like the sound of John’s PRS ‘Silver Sky’ signature model and would have bought one but for me the headstock on the Silver Sky just looks so wrong, despite John getting PRS to turn the headstock around (so it’s like a left-handed PRS). I was hoping that the look of the Silver Sky’s headstock would ‘grow on me’ over time but it hasn’t!
Absolutely love Mayer's tone! I love the chimeyness of it.
I can highly recommend Defter Pickups, they make a scooped mid set that get pretty close and they aren't stupidly expensive either. Currently rebuilding my Japanese Aria strat so it's a Mayer/Clapton Hybrid that has that Mayer tone for silky rhythm playing with the roar of the boost and tbx circuit for leads.
I've said this before, in other words (perhaps in the same words, but I don't think so), but your dynamics are out of this world. Superb.
Thank you so much Steve 🙂
Bro, this is the first video i,'ve watched of him and I wish I had prepared or something. Because I'm completely shooked out.
That version of "another kind of green" was just incredible, playing is other-worldly as usual Chris!
That intro solo sounds more like John Mayer than John Mayer does, lmao! sick playing!!!
God, you are so good Chris. I have been playing guitar for about 40 years and I am old enough to be your father, but your talent is just breath taking.
Buck! How can you be that talented at such a young age? I'm baffled and jealous and really impressed. Great video. Awesome play
I love my John Mayer Signature Stratocaster
Nice man! Sounds great!
Chris has so strongly defined his style that no matter the guitar it still sounds like Chris...
The opening Jam was exceptional! Thanks for your great content every Friday
Chris Buck......... what a great guitarist, and equally nice guy. 👍🏻👍🏻
Huge intro, mayer, trucks feeling and buck touch!
FWIW - I enjoy your playing just as much as Mayer’s. Looking forward to seeing your ‘64 strat completed!
We don't hear Another Kind of Green often enough 🤟 Well done sir!
Beautiful and toneful playing as always ... Chris is world class
I absolutely loved your playing in the intro
I´v love a 10 minute video of you just Playing like this, with this sound and your feel.
Phenomenal playing on this very special guitar. Good job mate!
I enjoyed the under appreciated bangers you played in this video. Another Kind of Green and Something’s Missing are such good songs.
I actually got a one back in 2006 with a serial number of “2930” and did the same thing with the pickups. They never sat in the mix right but the rest of the guitar was really great for a production-line fender.
What a beautiful piece of playing at the beginning
Would love to see an updated version of your guitar rundown with all your guitars! Great video as always!
That was some GREAT playing!
Not expecting he's gonna mention Tom Misch!
Chris' hands aren't solid, they are fluid asf.
Yes, something special with those pickups👍🏻🎸🤘🏻
To get rich..Create the illusion that there is something magical in pickups (or a whatever object). Make people believe they will sound like the person who plays the pups
if they obtain them. Once accomplished, make the price extremely high....further driving the desire to HAVE to HAVE them. What is learned is that it's not the guitar or
the pups, it's the guy doing the playing. It's the player not the instrument. An average player is going to sound average no matter what the cost of the instrument (or pups).
A great player is going to sound great playing a Squier.
True. I see a bunch of channels where they have a wall full of expensive guitars but very limited knowledge of music
I parcially agree.... You are right about the "it´s not the gear but the player" part but I do think that gear helps quite a lot (maybe about 70-80% the player and 20-30% the gear), in my opinion a guitar should offer you comfort, but a good amp and good pickups, and even some effects do make you sound better. If it wouldn't, great players would just buy squier bullets and the line 6 spider.
I agree. I saw Jack Pearson plays Squier that was made in Indonesia and it sounds fantastic!
Well, yes. But also no!
@@freto_cognito9001 well, yes. But also yes. In addition, yes.
Good job, well played and well explained
Nice intro! Love everything about the sunburst
Love that Yesterday Shutting Down intro!
I keep replaying that intro holy shit!
...sounds lovely
I have this guitar and I absolutely love it ! My favorite guitar
Bro, your flow is INSANE! At first I thought it was Mayer playing in the beginning lol
I love mine!
Love your playing. Thanks for the videos.
Cheers Patrick, my pleasure.
And why oh why doesnt Fender leave more strats with the backplates undrilled!?!?, looks so clean and lovely!
As a strat fan, I like his model a lot.
I salute you for the restraint it must of took to not play the slow dancing thing 👍🏻
LukeDavid86 I hate that it’s become too mainstream to play because it’ll just never get old to me lol
That intro! 🔥🔥🔥
Dang dude, nice work!
As someone with a JM sig, yes. Yes it is. Incredible guitar.
Awesome playing as usual Chris. I've always had a hang up over buying a signature guitar. I always felt like it was made for someone else. I have a custom shop deluxe strat which I love dearly, so for the same money as the Mayer signature, I still think I'd go for another custom shop.
Keep up the great videos. I find them very inspiring.
Nice info.,beautiful playing 😎🎙🎸✅
Oh my ... Chris, your tone on this video is superb, if you used guitar rig, I have no ID how you make it sound like that, I can never come even close , good job buddy!
Awesome 😊😍
you deserve a few million followers buddy. thanks for the video ;)
I’ve had this guitar for years, and it’s the sweetest sounding strat I’ve ever played. I love the birdseye maple neck, and on rosewood with that profile, feels perfect. I’ve noticed they’ve gone up a lot since he left fender. I can see why… these are special. Silver Skies are nice… but they’re the Tesla of the guitar world right now.
I’d never sell mine. Awesome to see a pro like you at work on it, but I think you’re nuts for replacing the big dippers🤨.
Very impressed! You have my subscription.
Wow, that demo for another kind of green was insane! Can you please do a tutorial for Another Kind of Green? There is no live video footage of Mayer playing it and there is a general lack of tutorials on that song.
found a set of big dippers and put them into my squire (: couldnt be happier with them!
sweet playing mate!
superb guitar skills
The improv at 6:02 was so Mateus Asato. It surely had some bits of 'Bluesy Wednesday'.
That’s a John Mayer track called Another Kind of Green
@@ChrisBuckGuitar Thanks buddy. Didn't know that earlier. Definitely listening to it. Btw great video.
Your playing man....congrats!!!
Did you make the backing track of "yesterday shutting down" in that intro by yourself or is it anywhere available?. Exceptional playing, chapeau mate!
Wicked man. I had this strat but sold it some years ago and I do regret it. Dope playing. Cheers
Saw you live at peach guitars a few months ago, was very inspired! Keep up the good work! Was there any videos of that live show by any chance? Thanks
A very JM intro. Nice work
Great intro my man.
Killer intro mate. Hope you're well
All good thank you mate! Hope you’re good 🙂
I have a jm strat and the closest thing to me to the big dippers were the lollar blondes and to its respect has its own special tone mixed with that big dipper recipe
I have and love my Silver Sky, I'd love to try this one !
Maxime Beaudoin same neck pretty much.
I have the ss also but I will own the fender version one day also. Definitely a guitar I need
We are all watching this thinking.......I need to practice.
I fell in love with the look of the guitar and put one together myself. Spent under $250 all-in, including pickups that I love, it is now my favorite strat overall for playability and sound. If only I could just build myself your fingers.
Where did you get all the parts for less than 250?
Last year i bought and returned 3 fender strats including one of the rarities. All had issues regarding string spacing or neck pocket misalignment.
The 2 50s strats had the stickiest necks ive ever played, and the single ply scratchplates were lifting up in the space between the screws creating a 2 mm mouth...
So after a month of trying to get a dream strat i tried the PRS skyline, aside from some high frets the guitar is incredible. I dont know whats going on at fender right now but i swear every high E string that comes out of the factory is 1mm from falling off the fretboard.
I'm glad someone else agrees - I know a company like Gibson gets a lot of heat regarding quality control, but dang I agree Fender has gone down that same path in some form imo.
I said this in another comment but I can't tell you how many new American strats I've picked up off the rack and instantly put them back down because of action, the stiffness of strings, spacing being off, etc. Most things could be remedied by a setup I suppose, but that should've been done at the get-go.
It's to be expected though right? A company as big as Fender that mass produces these guitars can't possibly baby each and every unit out until it reaches the consumer. PRS is both small and big, but I've never picked up a bad PRS honestly. Wonderful guitars, coming from a guy that owns a silver sky.
Creamy smooth playing killer touch
I liked the way the guitar was reacting to the amp
Chris, congrats! Very nice playing as usual! Just help me clarify something. Did you put the Big Dippers back for the entire video? I ask because in the first song the guitar sounded quieter but a lot dynamic. In the second song it sounded louder and chimey. Regards!
Thanks Chris, i always believed a standard of whatever the model is is all we need but i suppose i would take Lenny if i could afford to 👍
Shit man that that could've passed as Mayer playing. I always feel a strat is a strat, it just comes down to who's playing it. I say that with respect to the strat!
The pickups are truly great. Definitely not hype. Just bought my JM strat on reverb a few months ago and it blew me away! So good clean and when you push them on a tube amp. Something special comes through.
Your playing is always amazing and inspireable.!
So... Now you're a Fender Artist are we going to see a Chris Buck Signature Strat?
... And if you got the chance what would you do?
Under wound pickups are 🔥🔥🔥
Please release the tabs and backing track for the intro! It’s absolutely fantastic.
Looks my Squier Classic Vibe!
Has a lot of things I look for in a strat, nothing earth shaking, but some nice spec's that'd save me a bit of modding down the line!
Hey Chris love your videos! I have this guitar and it has a great tone. I was wondering if you could make a video on how you hold your pick, there’s a lot of people that are interested in your right hand playing.
Nice playing! I saw your video on the John Lennon/Ron DeMarino LP jr.
In the early 80s I went to DeMarino's shop in Babylon NY to sell him a lawsuit Ibanez Firebird. Instead, he offered a trade : a 59 Les Paul special. Needless to say, we were both happy with the deal. Ron was a very nice guy.
By the way, he had pictures of his gigging days on the wall. One showed him with Ronald Reagan at the White House.
That’s awesome! Thanks for the comment. Do you still have the LP Special?
mad chops
It's funny how many people I've met over the years that have had guitars that sounded great in isolation and then just couldn't get them to work in a band mix. I have a battered old strat which frankly doesn't sound great on its own but just kills it live.
People don’t tweak their sound with an EQ pedal. Just cut and boost specific frequencies, and you’ll get a great live sound assuming you’re actually playing well.
It's the throaty mids
Good one Chris as ever: giving it to us straight, down the middle and unbiased. Would you consider doing an FF episode on whether minor mods such as a brass block, saddles, hard-tailing the trem with 5 springs like Clapton did, and removing the back spring cover actually make an audible difference? Tricky to present I guess but I've never seen anyone do a demo with discernable results. Anyhow, greetings from the South. The far south! 👍
Check out Trevor Wilkinson's thoughts on this matter, it very much does make a difference. However, those of sort of questions will never be answered in the heavily-compressed world of RUclips (or 90% of other "lossless" digital formats). The question isn't so much "Is there a difference?", I think it's "Would anyone notice, or care, if there was a difference?"...... food for thought

Yup, right on the fence...
I think the guitar sounds killer!
Hi Chris, had a similar experience and removed ‘Texas specials’ (too harsh and glassy for me) from my sunburst Strat and replaced them with Lindy Fralin ‘Woodstock’s which were okay live, but didn’t record very well. Now changed the Fralin Woodstock’s for pickups made for me by a fantastic pickup maker here in the north east of England who specialises in replicating vintage tones. It can be worth checking out and bearing in mind that small scale pickup builders are usually able to wind pickups in ways similar or the same as Fender and Gibson did back in the 50’s and 60’s so can produce some really authentic tones at very reasonable prices.
Looks like a fairly classic Stratocaster as you say, sounds nice, I love classic Strats!
Some Marshall amps tend to do a kind of mid-sweep thing with single coils. Especially on strats and teles. Therefore, they can be hard to dial into a mix, it all depends on how the guitar rig as a whole is set up and dialled in before the engineer puts a mic on the amp. It then has to be dialled in tight on the soundboard. Hendrix used cranked Marshall stacks so it wouldn’t have been the same as what Chris went through.
Best Fender Strat ever produced, end of!
Hardly
I think a great amp is more key than anything to tone. Eddie Van Halen and Brian Mays homemade guitar recipes are prime examples. Amazing tone with amazing amps and of course incredible abilities
Wow. What are your amp settings, man! You always sound amazing!
What are you using to get your tone so sparkly on Another Kind of Green?
I own both the fender John Mayer signature Strat and the PRS sig. The secret to making the big dipper pick ups sit in a mix is to play through a fender style amp and turn the tone knob to about six or seven as the default. I also found the Fender fretwork to be poor quality. Though, once the frets were re-levelled I found it to be a great guitar.
they do sound good ..
Outstanding playing! But holy compression Batman!
Haha I had a set wound to bigger dipper by a local custom pickup winder. Took them out after a few weeks and asked the guy to wind me set of Texas specials (minus a bit of the extreme trebles) with a overwound bridge. The big Dipper or copies of which are a bit too mild for me, you are almost eating into soundhole magnetic pickup territory.
Another kind of green has always been one of my favs! Klein has a better set of black 1 pickups for less than used big dippers ($250 I think I paid). Klein Jazzy Cats is what they call them. Very nice pickups. They have the same magnet stagger as the black 1 (he researched it in depth and found what sounded closest). The fender big dippers aren’t actually recreations of the black 1 pickups. Very different. That was a misconception. Jazzy Cats are just good low output (like 6k) and more output in the bridge. My favs so far. Replaced CS fat 50s with no regrets at all. Planet tone has a scooped set for about $100 that isn’t bad at all either if you’re on a budget. Have those in a Mexi strat. Let’s be honest though save money for better amps and lessons as that will by far outweigh any change from pickups (pretty subtle changes honestly). Resist the rabbit hole!
Would love to hear him play the PRS Silver Sky
It is also in what your righthand does that lends to the tone. These are not hype. They are just great sounding guitars and JM's signature sound. Melodious.! If you can get your hands on one you are lucky!
