@WordodAdviceTV idk if you'll see this, but my furnace looks very similar to this Carrier furnace and it has unfortunately stopped working properly. We replaced the super old thermostat, hoping that was the problem, but that doesn't seem to be it. Everything starts coming on normally, but when the squirrel cage is attempting to turn, it is kind of stopping and starting and not turning smoothly. So I'm about to remove it and clean it. If this doesn't work, do you have a website(s) you recommend for ordering parts? Just in case I need to replace the motor blower. It's giving a 41 status code (blower motor fault) and it's about to get colder here in the Chicago area. We just can't afford $2,000 right before Christmas with 6 kids and 3 of them with birthdays in the next month 🤦🏼♀️ Any help is greatly appreciated!

Telling people to take a picture of everything before doing any disconnecting is such a big brain move. That is such a great trick for taking anything apart so it goes back together correctly.
Want another " big brain tip" .... change everything wire for wire when replacing control boards or dual run split capacitor... a picture really wouldn't be needed
Actually, no. Residential HVAC companies want to sell new systems. Wasting time cleaning a blower is not the most productive time, which is why they charge a lot of money to do it. Even at that price, they are still not making as much as selling a new system.
You're welcome! Yeah, if it's been 17 years then it might be a bit dirty regardless of how regularly you replaced the filters. Especially if you have pets.
I’ll chime in here. I would suggest buying a cheap gear puller (inner bearing puller) for around $15 before you start just in case you can’t get the squirrel cage off of the spindle. Sometimes they are very stuck.
I just did mine. I found brake fluid really took off the grime really well if you don't have compressed air. Measured the Cap capacitance, motor draw & HP just in case I need to replace either. Thx Jay!!!
As an HVAC tech it seems like 8/10 times I need to use the puller. Lol. I don’t even need to watch your videos, but they’re fun to watch. Sometimes you have tips that I’m like “wow DUH why didn’t I think of that?!” 😂
Oh wow, 8/10 is terrible. 😄 My condolences brother! I think for me it would be more like 2/10. I started to push the wheel down and then sand/oil the shaft every time that I have to pull out the motor. Usually that is enough to get it out. I just change a motor weeks ago, n your other video was very helpful. Thanks for doing another video. Very helpful!! 100 percent correct regarding a rusty shaft. I had to use WD-40, n it came off after waiting a few minutes.

@@WordofAdviceTV ...I never understood WD40 for stuff like this instead of TRUE penetrating oil like PB Blaster or Kroil. Remember WD40 is only a water-repellant (WD=Water Displacing, test trial #40).... and is not so good as penetrating oil ( and if it somehow works, it's still not as good to penetrate as a true penetrating oil).
What a flash back !!!You show a few seconds of one of your first furnace videos . I think it’s the first one I watched when I was learning how to clean / replace the flame sensor. We’ve both come a long way since then. This cleaning would typically be done between seasons when you don’t require either the AC or furnace but lately that “gap” season is nonexistent here in the Northeast. It seems that you’re running the AC on Monday and firing up the heat on Tuesday. Hey Jay, when you R E A L L Y get ambitious, do a video where you continue the tear down to the point where you can get to the bottom of the “A” coil so THAT can be cleaned too. I have a 90% furnace standing in my way in both the basement and attic units. The attic unit I’ll have to do while balancing on top of a 6’ stepladder . I’m a scared !!!!😥
I know right! Nostalgic videos. 😄 I actually replaced that blower motor (in the old video I showed) after coming home from work one day. My wife said the house was getting cold and it smelled like burnt plastic. Sure enough, it was a bad motor so I decided to film a video while I was at it. I agree with you that the weather has been wild lately. No downtime for the HVAC units. Thank you for the ambitious suggestion! I was considering doing a video similar to what you described but have been procrastinating since it's a bit tedious to do. 😅 With your setup it sounds like it would be even more challenging though. I can't promise you when exactly I will do this but one video I want to make later is where I show how to completely gut the furnace and take out all the parts, along with the heat exchanger.

I hope everything is going good with your wife 🙏 and family..we have been having 😅a lot of thunderstorms here lately. We had a big storm last week with high winds it took down a rose trellis a flag pole that has wisteria vine growing on it. I was able to fix both back the flagpole with the wisteria was very hard because it was so top-heavy with the vines I bet it weighs a good seventy pounds or more and it made it very hard to stand back up but I got it 👍..the skies are getting black now and it's starting to get late the sun done went down and it's dusk I hope it doesn't come a big one at night because you can't see what is happening. Well you take care of yourself buddy and tell everyone I said hello and be sure to give them a hug 🫂 for me but don't squeeze too tight. It's been cloudy here lately too but thunderstorms in Hawaii are super rare. I learned something new recently. That there is such a thing as a "green flash" - when the sun briefly turns green right when it sets. My wife and I have been trying to catch a green flash ever since but apparently those are super rare as well so we have yet to see one. 😄 Baby still hasn't come out yet. My wife is at 40 weeks today so it should be happening very soon. I didn't want to take it apart. I tried wire brushing but it did a poor job. Eventually what did the most good was the stick off of a large bottle rocket. It removed a lot but not enough. Then I sprayed carb cleaner onto each fin. It melted the crust right off. I blew out as much debris as possible with a 20 volt leaf blower. Turned the heat on and the whirring noise was gone!
The only thing I can add to this is to use a sharpie to make the motor location wires to housing and the shaft depth. My brother in law use to do a service and he and his team always cleaned the blower wheel as part of it however he didn't take it all apart but use a small wire brush and compressed air to blow the bust and dirt out of the housing before putting it back in.
Yes. Just take the door out and shine a flashlight into the blower wheel compartment from the side. You should be able to easily see if there is a bunch of build up on the fins. If you have a hard time seeing it, then you could either try using a mirror or just carefully reach in with your fingers and swipe inside the blower wheel fins. You will be able to feel/see if they are dirty.
With the blower out it would be a good time to reach up with the brush on your shopwac and clean the surface of the secondary of the heat exchanger. It'll be just as dirty up there as the blower.
Informative video as usual! I think the video shows an ECM motor and I was wondering your thoughts of them? In terms of reliability and repair options compare with PSC?
Thank you! I don't really like ECM motors. Personally I prefer PSC motors even though they are less efficient. PSC motors break down less, are easier/faster to get, and cost way less.
Mine is badly overdue for a cleaning. It’s an 2008 weather king and there’s a warning label about gas and possibly starting a fire if mishandled. I should be okay taking the blower fan out as long as the power to it is turned off, right?
I’ve been experiencing issues with my HVAC filters bending and creating air gaps, allowing dust into the house. I've already tried switching back to more restrictive filters, but the problem persists. Could a dirty blower be causing increased suction or airflow issues, making my filters bend? Would cleaning the blower help resolve this?
Any ideas on how to balance the fan. I installed a new motor in my sons furnace. It was fine for awhile but it seems to have a bit of a balance issue now. How to adjust or reposition weights?
I have never actually balanced a blower wheel myself so unfortunately I can't offer any advice on the topic. But what I can say is that often the problem is the motor bracket and not an imbalanced wheel. Especially if it was fine at first but then started making more noise. If you replace the original bracket with a universal one, that may be all that's needed to solve the problem. One like this: amzn.to/3M77jn8

While you have the blower and motor out, look to see if your motor has oil ports. Even if it doesn't, you may still be able to get some oil in there. Many new motors have "sealed" bearings but the seals still leave enough room to get some lubrication in. DON'T use WD-40 or any kind of penetrating oil. The turbine oil or a specifically made electric motor lubricating oil is best to use. Just put a drop or two on the shaft next to the bearing and spin the shaft a few times.
How often should furnace coils be cleaned. Ours is in attic. I ask because we've rented in same home for 14 years and homeowners have never had anyone out to even do regular maintenance on it. The last few winters we've had issues. The home was built in 2000. The AC and furnace have to be about at end of their life span.
It really depends on how regularly the furnace filters were replaced. If you had renters then likely not too often. High chance that the evaporator coil is dirty.
I have hydronic heat with an oil boiler and can’t find my blower wheel! Help! (But seriously, great info even though I’m commenting so soon after you posted.). I’ve done this for my central ac air handlers in the past.
Anyone who knows me knows how very careful i am. Despite this i somehow managed to tighten the blower wheel set screw just a little bit off of the flat part on the shaft. That resulted in the slightest of scars on the shaft but enough to cause me a significant amount of time to pull the blower wheel the next cleaning. My advise is to be 100% sure youre exactly on the flat before you tighten down that setscrew. Working on siezed or rusted shafts is a nightmare so be forewarned.
Local company did a complete condenser clean / check / fix on our house with 2 AC units....new filters too and some recharge for R410 and R22 systems.....came to over $900 for all.....and did NOT include the one blower wheel cleaning of the inside furnace/air handler unit...... they wanted $350 for......was that too much as an adder to the other things done?

I think the same thing as you about sharing information the way it it shown on the videos here. I am so grateful to have it presented online. We sold that house 4 years ago so I'm not sure if the furnace is still standing or not. I do miss the house and that furnace though. (made many videos with it)
Oh wow.. That sounds terrible. Hopefully he was able to fully recover. I've cut myself many times on blower wheels (including this time as I was filming this video). Those fins slice through fingers real easy.. Better to just always wear gloves when doing this job.

Yes. Brushing and vacuuming is an option too but you won't be able to fully clean it without pulling out the blower wheel. That would still be much better than no cleaning at all though. 👍👍
I cleaned my blower super easy to get out it’s 35 year old furnace no board but has the 4 wires plugged into to a power supply I forgot that white is natural and plugged the black in and the blue wire smoked that motor good so I bought a new one but had a thin belly band and broke all 3 tabs so I bought another motor as you can’t get the same screw holes ,anyway costly mistake .😢

Why is it that if I'm interested in purchasing /replacing as a bundle unit (A/C and furnace, most hvac professionals charge aver $15k when I can purchase both units online for half that price. So my question #2 is can I just buy both units and have an HVAC guy come and install them. Furnace in attic and of course A/C outside
It's really not that much work, unless you have to disconnect a bunch of wires.I have a very old blower that I changed the motor out on and it takes me a minute to remove it and another minute or two to disassemble it.
My central air is having a strange intermittent problem. I turn it on, and it blows air, but not cold air, for 20 or more minutes, then sometimes it will either finally start cooling, or it won't. I decided it was really broken today because after 40 minutes the air never came out cold, so I turned it off, got my mom situated upstairs with the window ac, and went outside to trouble shoot. The thermostat and furnace are fine. I turned on the ac, went outside, the fan blew warm air (not hot) out of the top, and the pipes coming out of the bottom were not cool and did not condense. After about 20 minutes of wondering what to do, I noticed the air coming out of the vents was cold again. So I ran outside, and the air coming from the top of the unit is hot, and the pipes are cold and condensed. I had pretty much decided my capacitor was bad, but now that it is working again, it can't be the capacitor can it? Just a note, my unit is pretty dirty on 2 sides, but my garden hose is broken (lucky me) so I can't clean it until I get it fixed. Can the dirt be the only issue? Is there some other way to clean my ac without a hose (would a broom or shopvac cause damage?) Thanks! Sorry for the long comment. Love your videos!
if installers would make the filter air tight so no air bypasses the filter this would not be an issue, even the manufacture like Honeywells 5" wide filter housing allows unfiltered air bye door and a loose fitting filter almost seems like a sham.

It's been cloudy here lately too but thunderstorms in Hawaii are super rare. I learned something new recently. That there is such a thing as a "green flash" - when the sun briefly turns green right when it sets. My wife and I have been trying to catch a green flash ever since but apparently those are super rare as well so we have yet to see one. 😄 Baby still hasn't come out yet. My wife is at 40 weeks today so it should be happening very soon. I didn't want to take it apart. I tried wire brushing but it did a poor job. Eventually what did the most good was the stick off of a large bottle rocket. It removed a lot but not enough. Then I sprayed carb cleaner onto each fin.
It melted the crust right off. I blew out as much debris as possible with a 20 volt leaf blower.
Turned the heat on and the whirring noise was gone!
The only thing I can add to this is to use a sharpie to make the motor location wires to housing and the shaft depth. My brother in law use to do a service and he and his team always cleaned the blower wheel as part of it however he didn't take it all apart but use a small wire brush and compressed air to blow the bust and dirt out of the housing before putting it back in.

Yes. Just take the door out and shine a flashlight into the blower wheel compartment from the side. You should be able to easily see if there is a bunch of build up on the fins. If you have a hard time seeing it, then you could either try using a mirror or just carefully reach in with your fingers and swipe inside the blower wheel fins. You will be able to feel/see if they are dirty.
With the blower out it would be a good time to reach up with the brush on your shopwac and clean the surface of the secondary of the heat exchanger. It'll be just as dirty up there as the blower.

Haven't cleaned mine since install in 2009. It has barely any dust on it, 13 yrs later, so don't rush to do this.

I don't really like ECM motors. Personally I prefer PSC motors even though they are less efficient. PSC motors break down less, are easier/faster to get, and cost way less.

Mine is badly overdue for a cleaning. It’s an 2008 weather king and there’s a warning label about gas and possibly starting a fire if mishandled. I should be okay taking the blower fan out as long as the power to it is turned off, right?
Yes. The blower compartment usually has no gas piping or components in it so that is not a concern
Does the new motor have to be programmed before it is installed?
I’ve been experiencing issues with my HVAC filters bending and creating air gaps, allowing dust into the house. I've already tried switching back to more restrictive filters, but the problem persists. Could a dirty blower be causing increased suction or airflow issues, making my filters bend? Would cleaning the blower help resolve this?
Any ideas on how to balance the fan. I installed a new motor in my sons furnace. It was fine for awhile but it seems to have a bit of a balance issue now. How to adjust or reposition weights?
I have never actually balanced a blower wheel myself so unfortunately I can't offer any advice on the topic. But what I can say is that often the problem is the motor bracket and not an imbalanced wheel. Especially if it was fine at first but then started making more noise. While you have the blower and motor out, look to see if your motor has oil ports. Even if it doesn't, you may still be able to get some oil in there. Many new motors have "sealed" bearings but the seals still leave enough room to get some lubrication in. DON'T use WD-40 or any kind of penetrating oil. The turbine oil or a specifically made electric motor lubricating oil is best to use. Just put a drop or two on the shaft next to the bearing and spin the shaft a few times.

How often should furnace coils be cleaned. Ours is in attic. I ask because we've rented in same home for 14 years and homeowners have never had anyone out to even do regular maintenance on it. The last few winters we've had issues. The home was built in 2000. The AC and furnace have to be about at end of their life span.
It really depends on how regularly the furnace filters were replaced. If you had renters then likely not too often. High chance that the evaporator coil is dirty.
My furnace guy wants $750 to do this job. Think I’m going to save myself some money this summer.
I have hydronic heat with an oil boiler and can’t find my blower wheel! Help! (But seriously, great info even though I’m commenting so soon after you posted.). I’ve done this for my central ac air handlers in the past.

One thing to add.. do not drop the wheel or apply excess pressure on the blades.. doesn't take much to warp the wheel and make it out of round
Anyone who knows me knows how very careful i am. Despite this i somehow managed to tighten the blower wheel set screw just a little bit off of the flat part on the shaft. That resulted in the slightest of scars on the shaft but enough to cause me a significant amount of time to pull the blower wheel the next cleaning. My advise is to be 100% sure youre exactly on the flat before you tighten down that setscrew. Working on siezed or rusted shafts is a nightmare so be forewarned.
Local company did a complete condenser clean / check / fix on our house with 2 AC units....new filters too and some recharge for R410 and R22 systems.....came to over $900 for all.....and did NOT include the one blower wheel cleaning of the inside furnace/air handler unit...... they wanted $350 for......was that too much as an adder to the other things done?

Saw a guy in the hospital emergency room. He was cleaning his very sharp blower wheel and about cut his finger off. Lots of rehab. Cuidado Amigo!
Oh wow.. That sounds terrible. Hopefully he was able to fully recover. I've cut myself many times on blower wheels (including this time as I was filming this video). Those fins slice through fingers real easy.. Better to just always wear gloves when doing this job.

Yes. Brushing and vacuuming is an option too but you won't be able to fully clean it without pulling out the blower wheel. That would still be much better than no cleaning at all though. 👍👍
I cleaned my blower super easy to get out it’s 35 year old furnace no board but has the 4 wires plugged into to a power supply I forgot that white is natural and plugged the black in and the blue wire smoked that motor good so I bought a new one but had a thin belly band and broke all 3 tabs so I bought another motor as you can’t get the same screw holes ,anyway costly mistake .😢
Come on man, now one has a blower motor that is that easy to take out. Mine look like there's a rats nest in front of it.
In your experience. Why is it that if I'm interested in purchasing /replacing as a bundle unit (A/C and furnace, most hvac professionals charge aver $15k when I can purchase both units online for half that price. So my question #2 is can I just buy both units and have an HVAC guy come and install them. Furnace in attic and of course A/C outside

Pump it down at condenser, remove the flue pipe cut the lines pull out the coil wash the coil, braze it back in pull a vacuum and release the charge🫡
Not all blower motors are this easy man, some you need to go into attic and rough as heck to remove and clean

So you said nothing about the capacitor. What do you do with that?
This furnace has an ECM motor which does not have a capacitor (it has a few and they are built into the motor)
If this seems like a lot of work...changing your filters regularly will make this kind of cleaning a lot less frequent.
I cleaned mine for the first time after 11 years. It had a coating of dust on it but was not filthy. This was with regular filter changes.
It's really not that much work, unless you have to disconnect a bunch of wires.I have a very old blower that I changed the motor out on and it takes me a minute to remove it and another minute or two to disassemble it.
My central air is having a strange intermittent problem. I turn it on, and it blows air, but not cold air, for 20 or more minutes, then sometimes it will either finally start cooling, or it won't. I decided it was really broken today because after 40 minutes the air never came out cold, so I turned it off, got my mom situated upstairs with the window ac, and went outside to trouble shoot. The thermostat and furnace are fine. I turned on the ac, went outside, the fan blew warm air (not hot) out of the top, and the pipes coming out of the bottom were not cool and did not condense. After about 20 minutes of wondering what to do, I noticed the air coming out of the vents was cold again. So I ran outside, and the air coming from the top of the unit is hot, and the pipes are cold and condensed. I had pretty much decided my capacitor was bad, but now that it is working again, it can't be the capacitor can it? Just a note, my unit is pretty dirty on 2 sides, but my garden hose is broken (lucky me) so I can't clean it until I get it fixed. Can the dirt be the only issue? Is there some other way to clean my ac without a hose (would a broom or shopvac cause damage?) Thanks! Sorry for the long comment. Love your videos!
if installers would make the filter air tight so no air bypasses the filter this would not be an issue, even the manufacture like Honeywells 5" wide filter housing allows unfiltered air bye door and a loose fitting filter almost seems like a sham.
